A straightforward Fourier-transform approach is employed to investigate acousto-optic interaction between an input optical beam with arbitrary profile and contrapropagating cw sound in the Bragg regime. The process can be analyzed in terms of the simultaneous scattering of light by the two sound waves in the interaction region. Analytic expressions for the equivalent transfer functions are obtained and the scattered light profiles are plotted.

Using a simple model of a ring cavity comprising a cubically nonlinear medium, we analyze dispersive optical bistability in the presence of more than one spectral component. We show the phenomenon of so-called competition for resonance. In addition to presenting cavity characteristics for the cases of two and three different frequencies, we also discuss the general method for finding steady-state solutions and checking their stability. A simple and efficient algorithm, based on a relaxation method, is devised to find steady-state solutions satisfying appropriate boundary conditions. The relaxation dynamics is physically related to a finite response time of the medium.

Personal computer based simulations are popular because of the wide availability of personal computers. In this thesis, a simple simulation model of a generic infrared tracker is developed for the personal computer. This thesis first centers on the definition of a generic infrared tracker and the development of a tracker model. The remainder of this thesis is a description of the personal computer based computer simulation model, and a discussion of results of simulation runs to characterize the tracker model response. Squirrel-caused power outages in Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska, were evaluated by examining company power outage reports and by consulting with power company representatives. Reports showed that squirrel-caused outages at pole-mounted transformers were most prevalent during May, June, and October (48% of total) and between 1 and 4 h after sunrise (38%), patterns that coincide with squirrel dispersal or morning activity periods. In Lincoln, 1980 and 1981, squirrels caused 177 outages per year, which was 24% of all outages and 90% of animal-caused outages. Estimated minimum annual costs were $23 364 for repairs, public relations, and lost revenue while meters were …

The objective of this thesis is to develop the FORTRAN subroutine PLOTER which is a general-purpose plotting tool to plot charts on a Hewlett Packard plotter. The programs RESP and INVLAP which can plot the frequency and time responses of system functions are modified to adopt the PLOTER subroutine and are stored of the HP1000-A900 minicomputer whose software, the GRAPHICS/1000, supports the graphics ability of PLOTER. This thesis describes the theories, functions, software techniques and operations of the PLOTER subroutine and the application programs RESP and the INVLAP. It also provides program listings and example plots.

Using SPICE experiments, it has been possible to verify most of the important aspects of electronic holography. The generation and properties of dynamic echoes under different types of nonlinearities have been extensively tested, and some new information has been garnered in the process. The case of pulse and generalized memory echoes has also been tested, and the results have been fairly satisfactory. Most of all, the simplicity with which the intriguing concept of memory echoes has translated into the circuit implementation on SPICE, and the closeness of the results to predicted behavior have been somewhat of a pleasant surprise.

Control Anticipation Parameter (CAP), used in MIL-SPEC-8785C as a longitudinal handling qualities criterion does not adequately distinguish between different flight phases. Recent flight test data from the Landing Approach Higher Order Systems (LAHOS) study further indicate the inadequacy of the second order approximations for higher order longitudinal landing flying qualities. Nine Aircraft that fall within the Level 1 boundary reveal pilot ratings ranging from 1.5 to 10 (Cooper/Harper). These nine aircraft are studied by combining their longitudinal dynamics with pilot modelling to examine a better method of landing flying quality prediction and evaluation. Self‐refraction effects have been observed during the propagation of deep‐water capillary‐gravity waves. The observations are shown to be in qualitative agreement with the theory of self‐focusing and defocusing in a cubically nonlinear medium in the presence of diffraction.

Subharmonic generation has been observed during the propagation of deep‐water capillary waves. The observations are shown to be in agreement with the theory of degenerate resonant noncollinear three‐wave interaction in a nonlinear, dispersive medium.

The present thesis attempts to give a concise and critical account of the evolution of the echo phenomena over the last thirty years. Starting with spin and photon echoes, which were among the earliest to be observed and studied, the thesis explores the experimental findings and the models proposed in connection with the more contemporary echo experiments, viz. those involving electroacoustic or polarization echoes in single and polycrystalline piezoelectric materials and in powders. The problem of this thesis is to study the plating prohibitive properties of the various materials commonly used in the manufacturing of separators, and to indicate which material would be most serviceable and feasible in a separator. At one time positives and negatives were kept not more than 0.25 inches apart, with the idea of reducing the intervening layers of electrolyte, and, therefore, the internal resistance of the cell, as much as possible.
