This article presents a comprehensive review of contemporary approaches to the automation and intelligent control of wastewater biological treatment processes. Particular emphasis is placed on the digitalisation of wastewater treatment plants, ranging from the implementation of automated process control systems (APCS/SCADA-based solutions) to the application of predictive algorithms and the development of digital twins of bioreactors.
Special attention is devoted to mathematical models that underpin the control of bioprocesses. The evolution of the most widely used activated sludge models—ASM1, ASM2d, and ASM3—is examined, as these models describe key processes such as microbial community growth, nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming Supply Chain Management (SCM), yet many organizations struggle to assess their readiness for AI adoption and to understand how AI capabilities develop across maturity stages. This dissertation addresses this gap by developing a Capability Maturity Model (CMM) for AI integration in SCM, grounded in Organizational Information Processing Theory (OIPT), the Resource-Based View, and related capability frameworks. The model provides a structured approach for evaluating an organization's information-processing requirements, resource configurations, and alignment needed for effective AI-enabled supply chain operations.

Despite artificial intelligence reshaping the world, its development generates uncertainties regarding future capabilities. AI simultaneously exists as an artifact of engineering design and as autonomous intelligence, creating an observer-participant feedback loop. This paper proposes that embodied AI faces a bandwidth-limited intelligence threshold T_h that it arises from B = min(C_sens,C_Act). However, Shannon capacity measures bits while intelligence operates on concepts, necessitating a dual-channel model separating physical bandwidth B_io from representational capacity B_rep. Intelligence emerges as multi-dimensional rather than scalar, with components exhibiting different bandwidth dependencies. Fault detection and diagnosis of three-phase inverter-fed motor drives is essential for ensuring system reliability, safety, and continuous operation in applications such as electric vehicles and industrial automation. This paper proposes a data-driven fault detection framework based on normalized current features and a lightweight bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) network which can be generalized to different motor power rating in the same controller system. A compact set of six time-domain features, consisting of the mean and root-mean-square (RMS) values of the phase currents, is extracted and normalized with respect to the average RMS value. As the urgency to address climate change and modernize energy infrastructure grows, the building sector plays a key role in improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. This study evaluates five energy retrofit strategies for Building 101 at The Navy Yard in Philadelphia, comparing two real-world proposals from energy service companies with three simulation-based packages derived from Building Energy Simulation (BES) tools. The study examined whether advanced BES tools provide greater accuracy and decision-making value compared to simpler alternatives. The global energy transition toward decarbonization and digitalization requires advanced methods to manage decentralized, data-intensive cyber-physical energy systems. This systematic review analyzes 106 research studies on Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) in renewable energy and smart grids, organized into seven application clusters covering forecasting, system design, operation, reliability, data and cybersecurity, and energy markets. The review situates these applications within a Cyber-Physical-Social Systems (CPSS) framework. Results show that GANs dominate current applications (47.2%), followed by LLMs (10.4%) and VAEs (9.4%), with growing adoption of diffusion and score-based models (7.5% each). In recent years, vision-language models (VLMs) have been applied to various fields, including healthcare, education, finance, and manufacturing, with remarkable performance. However, concerns remain regarding VLMs’ consistency and uncertainty, particularly in critical applications such as healthcare, which demand a high level of trust and reliability. This paper proposes a novel approach to evaluate uncertainty in VLMs’ responses using a convex hull approach on a healthcare application for visual question answering (VQA). Flexible and Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems (FRMSs) are essential for coping with variability in modern production environments; however, efficient scheduling and rapid reconfiguration remain challenging. This paper presents a hybrid optimization framework that integrates Colored Petri Net (CPN) modeling with Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) to enhance scheduling performance and system adaptability. The CPN formalism ensures verifiable modeling of system dynamics, while a transformer-based generative model produces candidate scheduling and reconfiguration strategies. Simulation experiments were conducted under static, dynamic, and adaptive scenarios, including machine breakdowns and dynamic job arrivals. Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) presents a promising pathway toward cost-effective and sustainable hydrogen production by integrating the chemical robustness of alkaline systems with the compact, zero-gap design of proton exchange membrane electrolyzers. Modern power distribution systems are rapidly evolving into cyber-physical, DER-rich, and data-driven networks that rely on extensive sensing, communication, automation, grid-edge intelligence, and operator decision support. While this transformation improves flexibility, observability and controllability, it also expands the cyber-attack surface and increases the risk that cyber intrusions can propagate into physical disturbances, compromised DER operation, degraded situational awareness, and interrupted service continuity. The article examines modern approaches to modernizing vegetable oil refining processes from the perspective of increasing energy efficiency, environmental friendliness, and final product quality. Traditional and innovative technologies are analyzed, with a focus on the implementation of membrane filtration, automated control systems, heat exchange complexes, and renewable energy sources. It has been shown that the use of intelligent control systems, high-precision membrane filters, and heat regeneration allows for a 25% reduction in energy consumption, a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and a significant improvement in acidity, color, and impurity content in the product. This article proposes a comprehensive approach to training process operators, based on computer simulators integrated with digital twins, SCADA/DCS systems, real production data, and artificial intelligence algorithms. This approach is particularly relevant given the increased requirements for safety, productivity, and reliability of industrial facilities, as human factors are often the main cause of accidents (up to 60-80% of cases). The article examines the problems and prospects of creating discrete fiber-optic liquid level gauges. Functional diagrams of single-channel and multi-channel discrete fiber-optic liquid level meters are presented. Examining the challenges of keeping this system running continuously reveals that sustaining its required reliability necessitates replacing malfunctioning measurement systems with operational ones. Investigations into differential equation models demonstrate that system recovery and failure events occur independently and follow a Poisson distribution pattern.

This paper presents a Fuzzy-SPT (Fuzzy Set-Point Tracking) controller designed to combine the strengths of FLC (Fuzzy Logic Control) and PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) control while mitigating their limitations across varying operating conditions. Inspired by state-dependent reasoning but implemented within a single controller, the method uses internal logic to adapt the control effort across different operating regions. FLC handles rapid changes and nonlinear transients, enabling fast system response without overshoot, while PID-like integral action is activated when the FLC reaches steady state or enters a threshold region near the set point, eliminating residual errors and maintaining stable performance. This article examines the problem of detecting and predicting industrial equipment faults using IoT sensor data through machine learning techniques. Sensor readings such as temperature, vibration, pressure, voltage, and current, as well as FFT-based features, were statistically analyzed. Class imbalance and low signal informativeness were identified as key factors limiting model accuracy. Results obtained from Logistic Regression, Random Forest, and XGBoost models were comparatively evaluated, showing that when ROC-AUC values remain around 0.5, distinguishing fault and non-fault states becomes challenging. Coal mining accidents are a major concern worldwide, necessitating effective safety measures and comprehensive analysis to prevent future accidents. Our proposed solution is the first attempt for Indian mines, inspired by the potential of Natural Language Processing (NLP) that can read and analyze vast repositories of accident records in seconds. In combination with machine learning (ML), NLP algorithms can extract unstructured text by eliminating manual data entry errors, reading poorly scanned reports, and understanding multiple versions of the event and cluster documents based on types that would otherwise take months to collate. The handling of municipal solid waste (MSW) in swiftly urbanizing Philippine cities poses intricate energy and governance challenges. In Baguio City, reliance on landfills has reached critical levels due to diminishing capacity, rising transport costs, and opposition to trash transfers by nearby LGUs. Although shaped by unique topographical and governance constraints, Baguio’s situation reflects issues faced by other rapidly growing Philippine cities; therefore, analyzing it offers insights for national MSW decision-making. In October 2024, the University of New Hampshire and NOAA’s Uncrewed Systems Office embarked on a mapping mission in the Gulf of Maine, simultaneously operating two DriX Un-crewed Surface Vehicles. Goals of the project were focused on testing hypotheses related to concepts of operation, including the safety of operations, cognitive loading of operators, management of vehicle endurance, vehicle logistics, maintenance and field support, refueling and a host of others.

Smart greenhouses offer a solution to sustainable food production under climate uncertainty, yet their management often depends on fixed rules or human intuition. This study proposes an intelligent decision-making framework that integrates optimization, simulation, and a neural set into a self-learning system. By generating “conditionally real data” through simulation and evolutionary algorithms, the system can predict microclimatic changes and optimize control of water, energy, and nutrients. Continuous digital feedback enables adaptive, data-efficient operation even with limited real data. Experimental results demonstrate reduced resource use and improved yield stability, advancing the development of autonomous and resilient greenhouse ecosystems.

The regularities of the combustion process of gaseous fuel in chamber furnaces are described. This process represents a homogeneous reaction in which there is no distinct boundary surface between the fuel and the oxidizer. It is shown that the latter either mix and then burn subsequently, or both processes occur simultaneously, corresponding respectively to kinetic and diffusion combustion. The structure of a turbulent-diffusion flame of gaseous fuel combustion is presented.
