Revised Polyhedral Conic Functions Algorithm For Supervised Classification, Gürhan Ceylan, Gürkan Öztürk
Revised Polyhedral Conic Functions Algorithm For Supervised Classification, Gürhan Ceylan, Gürkan Öztürk
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In supervised classification, obtaining nonlinear separating functions from an algorithm is crucial for prediction accuracy. This paper analyzes the polyhedral conic functions (PCF) algorithm that generates nonlinear separating functions by only solving simple subproblems. Then, a revised version of the algorithm is developed that achieves better generalization and fast training while maintaining the simplicity and high prediction accuracy of the original PCF algorithm. This is accomplished by making the following modifications to the subproblem: extension of the objective function with a regularization term, relaxation of a hard constraint set and introduction of a new error term. Experimental results show that …

Application Of Advanced Algorithms And Statistical Techniques For Weed-Plant Discrimination, Saman Akbar Zadeh
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Precision agriculture requires automated systems for weed detection as weeds compete with the crop for water, nutrients, and light. The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of machine learning methods to classify weeds/crops in agriculture. Statistical methods, support vector machines, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are introduced, investigated and optimized as classifiers to provide high accuracy at high vehicular speed for weed detection.
Initially, Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithms are developed for weed-crop discrimination and their accuracies are compared with a conventional data-aggregation method based on the evaluation of discrete Normalised Difference Vegetation Indices (NDVIs) at two different …
Route Planning For Long-Term Robotics Missions, Christopher Alexander Arend Tatsch
Route Planning For Long-Term Robotics Missions, Christopher Alexander Arend Tatsch
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Many future robotic applications such as the operation in large uncertain environment depend on a more autonomous robot. The robotics long term autonomy presents challenges on how to plan and schedule goal locations across multiple days of mission duration. This is an NP-hard problem that is infeasible to solve for an optimal solution due to the large number of vertices to visit. In some cases the robot hardware constraints also adds the requirement to return to a charging station multiple times in a long term mission. The uncertainties in the robot model and environment require the robot planner to account …

Optimal Design Of A Flux Reversal Permanent Magnet Machine As A Wind Turbinegenerator, Majid Ghasemian, Farzad Tahami, Zahra Nasiri-Gheidari
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Flux reversal permanent magnet generators are well suited for use as wind turbine generators owing to their high torque generation ability and magnetic gear. However, they suffer from poor voltage regulation due to their high winding inductance. In this paper, a design optimization method is proposed for flux reversal generators in wind turbine applications. The proposed method includes a new multiobjective function. Cost, volume of the generator, and mass of the permanent magnet are considered in it independently and simultaneously. Besides the new objective function, the main superiority of this paper compared with published papers is considering winding inductance in …

In this paper, we investigate the outdoor campaign allocation problem (OCAP), which asks for the distribution of campaign items to billboards considering a number of constraints. In particular, for a metropolitan city with a large number of billboards, the problem becomes challenging. We propose a genetic algorithm-based method to allocate campaign items effectively, and we compare our results with those of nonlinear integer programming and greedy approaches. Real-world data sets are collected with the given constraints of the price class ratios of billboards located in İstanbul and the budgets of the given campaigns. The methods are evaluated in terms of …

Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) are gaining popularity as an alternative vehicle in the past few years. The charging activities of PEVs impose extra electrical load on residential distribution system as well as increasing operational cost. There are multiple conflicting requirements and constraints during the charging activities. Therefore, this paper presents multiobjective PEV charging coordination based on weighted sum technique to provide simultaneous benefits to the power utilities and PEV users. The optimization problem of the proposed coordination is solved using binary particle swam optimization. The objectives of the coordination are to (i) minimize daily power loss, (ii) maximize power delivery …

Adaptive Modified Artificial Bee Colony Algorithms (Amabc) For Optimization Ofcomplex Systems, Rabi̇a Korkmaz Tan, Şebnem Bora
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Complex systems are large scale and involve numerous uncertainties, which means that such systems tend to be expensive to operate. Further, it is difficult to analyze systems of this kind in a real environment, and for this reason agent-based modeling and simulation techniques are used instead. Based on estimation methods, modeling and simulation techniques establish an output set against the existing input set. However, as the data set in a given complex systems becomes very large, it becomes impossible to use estimation methods to create the output set desired. Therefore, a new mechanism is needed to optimize data sets in …

Optimal Sampling Paths For Autonomous Vehicles In Uncertain Ocean Flows, Andrew J. De Stefan
Optimal Sampling Paths For Autonomous Vehicles In Uncertain Ocean Flows, Andrew J. De Stefan
Dissertations
Despite an extensive history of oceanic observation, researchers have only begun to build a complete picture of oceanic currents. Sparsity of instrumentation has created the need to maximize the information extracted from every source of data in building this picture. Within the last few decades, autonomous vehicles, or AVs, have been employed as tools to aid in this research initiative. Unmanned and self-propelled, AVs are capable of spending weeks, if not months, exploring and monitoring the oceans. However, the quality of data acquired by these vehicles is highly dependent on the paths along which they collect their observational data. The …

This paper investigates the comparative design optimizations of a five-phase outer-rotor flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machine for in-wheel traction applications. To improve the comprehensive performance of the motor, two kinds of large-scale design optimizations under different operating conditions are performed and compared, including the traditional optimization performed at the rated operating point and the optimization targeting the whole driving cycles. Three driving cycles are taken into account, namely, the urban dynamometer driving schedule (UDDS), the highway fuel economy driving schedule (HWFET), and the combined UDDS/HWFET, representing the city, highway, and combined city/highway driving, respectively. Meanwhile, the computationally efficient finite-element analysis …

A Survey Of Prediction And Classification Techniques In Multicore Processor Systems, Cristinel Ababei, Milad Ghorbani Moghaddam
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In multicore processor systems, being able to accurately predict the future provides new optimization opportunities, which otherwise could not be exploited. For example, an oracle able to predict a certain application's behavior running on a smart phone could direct the power manager to switch to appropriate dynamic voltage and frequency scaling modes that would guarantee minimum levels of desired performance while saving energy consumption and thereby prolonging battery life. Using predictions enables systems to become proactive rather than continue to operate in a reactive manner. This prediction-based proactive approach has become increasingly popular in the design and optimization of integrated …

Centroidal Voronoi Tessellation With Local Optimization, Tianyu Ye, Yiqun Wang, Dongming Yan, Junhai Yong
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Centroidal Voronoi tessellation is a special geometric structure, which has many applications in various fields such as geographical information system, signal processing, mesh generation/optimization, visualization and so on. Due to the highly non-convex nature of the CVT energy function, the existing methods for computing CVT have several drawbacks, which always trap into local minima. We propose generation optimization and stochastic optimization schemes for further reducing the CVT energy. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves both quality and efficiency compared to the recent approaches.

Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: To decrease the interference and improve the performance of a unidirectional circulation-type material handling system on a single loop with a shortcut, the interference and scheduling problem between AGVs are studied. According to the actual situation of material handling system, the interferences of two scheduling rules (random rule and order rule) are analyzed. An optimal scheduling rule under the interference case—exchange order rule is proposed. Different scheduling rules have an influence on the interference between AGVs and then have an important effect on the efficiency of the whole system. Experiment results show that the exchange order (E-Order) rule …

Design And Fabrication Of A Dual-Polarized, Dual-Band Reflectarray Using Optimal Phase Distribution, Iman Aryanian, Arash Ahmadi, Mehdi Rabbani, Sina Hassibi, Majid Karimipour
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Two main factors limiting the reflectarray bandwidth are different phase slopes versus the frequency at every point on the aperture and the phase limitation of comprising elements at different frequencies. Considering these two factors, a novel design method is proposed to implement a dual-band, dual-polarized reflectarray antenna in X and Ku bands. An optimization algorithm is adopted to find the optimum phase for each unit cell on the reflectarray aperture. The best geometrical parameters of the phasing elements are suggested based on the phase variation of the element versus frequency and the element position with respect to the antenna feed. …

In this paper, we describe histogram matching, a metric for measuring the distance of two datasets with exactly the same features, and embed it into a mixed integer programming formulation to partition a dataset into fixed size training and test subsets. The partition is done such that the pairwise distances between the dataset and the subsets are minimized with respect to histogram matching. We then conduct a numerical study using a well-known machine learning dataset. We demonstrate that the training set constructed with our approach provides feature distributions almost the same as the whole dataset, whereas training sets constructed via …

Energy use is increasing worldwide with industrialization and advancing technology. Following this increase, renewable energy resources are increasingly preferred to reduce the costs of energy production. Wind energy is preferred as a renewable energy resource because it is clean and safe. Wind turbines are used to meet the demand for wind energy. They are placed close to each other to generate higher amounts of energy. However, the wake effect problem arises in these types of layouts, and this hinders the turbines from producing the desired yield. A modified differential evolution (MDE) algorithm was proposed in this study to solve the …

Chaotic Phase-Coded Waveforms With Space-Time Complementary Coding For Mimo Radar Applications, Sheng Hong, Fuhui Zhou, Yantao Dong, Zhixin Zhao, Yuhao Wang, Maosong Yan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
A framework for designing orthogonal chaotic phase-coded waveforms with space-time complementary coding (STCC) is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar applications. The phase-coded waveform set to be transmitted is generated with an arbitrary family size and an arbitrary code length by using chaotic sequences. Due to the properties of chaos, this chaotic waveform set has many advantages in performance, such as anti-interference and low probability of intercept. However, it cannot be directly exploited due to the high range sidelobes, mutual interferences, and Doppler intolerance. In order to widely implement it in practice, we optimize the chaotic phase-coded waveform set from …

Recently, virtualization in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has witnessed significant attention due to the growing service domain for IoT. Related literature on virtualization in WSNs explored resource optimization without considering communication failure in WSNs environments. The failure of a communication link in WSNs impacts many virtual networks running IoT services. In this context, this paper proposes a framework for optimizing fault tolerance in virtualization in WSNs, focusing on heterogeneous networks for service-oriented IoT applications. An optimization problem is formulated considering fault tolerance and communication delay as two conflicting objectives. An adapted non-dominated sorting based genetic algorithm (A-NSGA) is developed to …
