Field-Of-View Optimization Of Magnetically Actuated 2d Gimballed Scanners, Gökçe Aköz, Yi̇ği̇t Dağhan Gökdel

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This work presents the field of view (FOV) maximization of a magnetically actuated two-dimensional (2D) gimballed scanner. The process of maximization is completed in two steps. (1) Optimization of the electrocoil providing the magnetic force that moves the scanner and (2) precise choice of optimum respective locations of both the scanner and the electrocoil. We first derived a formula relating the generated magnetic flux density, coil design parameters and driving voltage. Subsequently, we discussed the design trade-offs of an actuating electrocoil. We also conducted several experiments on a stainless steel 430 scanner having a footprint of 15 mm × 15 …

Wavelength Sensitivity Of Indium Tin Oxide On Surface Plasmon Resonance Angles, Antonio Ruiz, Carlos Villa Angulo, Ivan Olaf Hernandez-Fuentes Jan 2020

Wavelength Sensitivity Of Indium Tin Oxide On Surface Plasmon Resonance Angles, Antonio Ruiz, Carlos Villa Angulo, Ivan Olaf Hernandez-Fuentes

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is a charge-density oscillation that occurs when a beam of p-polarized monochromatic light impinges with a greater angle than the critical angle in a dielectric-metal interface. Because of the high losses related to metals, the generated surface plasmon waves propagate with high attenuation in the visible and near-infrared spectral regions in most of the dielectric-metal interfaces. An alternative to reduce such losses is to use a transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) film. In this paper, we compared theoretical calculations and experimental measurements of the SPR angle $\theta_{SPR}$ on the interfaces of a borosilicate prism (Bp) and …

Low Power And Low Phase Noise Vco With Dual Current Shaping For Iotapplications, Sajad Nejadhasan, Narges Moazenian, Ebrahim Abiri, Mohammah Reza Salehi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, two low phase noise and power consumption VCO circuits, which are suitable for Internet of things (IoT) applications, are proposed. In the first structure, in order to have more control of the current consumption, the current shaping technique is used in the PMOS and NMOS biasing circuit. In the second structure, for increasing the oscillation amplitude and reducing the phase noise, independent biasing for the NMOS section is used. In both structures, to increase the frequency tuning range (FTR), without using a capacitor bank, the varactor is used in the biasing structure. In the first structure the …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Software rejuvenation is an effective technique to counteract software aging in continuously running applications such as web service-based systems. In these systems, web services are allocated based on the requirements of receivers and the facilities of servers. One of the challenges while assigning web services is how to select appropriate server to reduce faults. In this paper, we propose dynamic software rejuvenation as a proactive fault-tolerance technique based on the neural fuzzy system. While considering a threshold for the rejuvenation of each web service, we completed the training based on the features of the service providers as well as the …

Diagnosis Of Speed Sensor Faults In An Induction Machine Based On A Robustadaptive Super-Twisting Observer, Mohammed Zakaria Kari, Abdelkader Mechernene, Sidi Mohammed Meliani, Ibrahim Guenoune

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The present paper aims to determine a robust sensor fault-tolerant controller based on fuzzy logic using a robust adaptive super-twisting observer for the control of an induction machine and an inverter set by a state estimation method. The speed sensor is considered in the present case. The modular structure of the fault-tolerant control (FTC) scheme allows integrating this sensor within the existing closed-loop system, and the observer can therefore be designed independently. This article presents a new method to develop a fuzzy decision system that provides faulttolerant control. This paper also aims at detecting the mechanical speed sensor faults. The …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Shortening the periods of compaction tests can be possible by analyzing the data obtained from previous laboratory tests with regression methods. The regression analysis applied to current data reduces the cost of experiments, saves time, and gives estimated outputs. In this study, the MLS-SVR, KB-SVR, and DTR algorithms were employed for the first time for the estimation of soil compaction parameters. The performances of these regression algorithms in estimating maximum dry unit weight (MDD) and optimum water content (OMC) were compared. Furthermore, the soil properties (fine-grained soil, sand, gravel, specific gravity, liquid limit, and plastic limit) were employed as inputs …

Optimum Reference Distance Based Path Loss Exponent Determination Forvehicle-To-Vehicle Communication, Kenan Kuzulugi̇l, Zeynep Hasirci, İsmai̇l Hakki Çavdar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication environment differs from classical wireless communication with respect to low antenna heights and high mobility. Therefore, V2V channel modeling based on real measurements is still crucial to get the channel parameters for the various road environments. One of the most extracted parameters from measurements is path loss exponent and selecting a fixed reference distance value in obtaining this parameter may also cause remarkable fitting errors. Thus, in this study, least square method-based approach for the best-fitted path loss exponent calculation was proposed by determining the optimum reference distance value from the V2V channel measurements. First, V2V channel …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Device-to-device (D2D) communication is an important technique to improve capacity of future wireless networks. Cellular communications, internet of things and intelligent transport systems are key areas that could benefit from reduced end-to-end delay provided by D2D communication. Efficient device discovery is an important precondition to enable D2D communication. In this paper, we propose a space division multiple access (SDMA)-based distributed device discovery protocol in which user equipments (UEs) periodically transmit discovery beacons to each other. The proposed protocol reduces contention in the discovery beacons by allocating resource blocks to the UEs based on their location. Simulations results show that the …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Nowadays, the location-based service (LBS) has become an essential part of convenient service in people's daily life. However, the untrusted LBS servers can store lots of information about the user, such as the user's identity, location, and destination. Then the information can be used as background knowledge and combined with the query frequency of the user to launch the inference attack to obtain user's privacy. In most of the existing schemes, the author considers the algorithm of virtual location selection from the historical location of the user. However, the LBS server can infer the user's location information on the historical …

A Novel S-Box-Based Postprocessing Method For True Random Number Generation, Erdi̇nç Avaroğlu, Taner Tuncer Jan 2020

A Novel S-Box-Based Postprocessing Method For True Random Number Generation, Erdi̇nç Avaroğlu, Taner Tuncer

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The quality of randomness in numbers generated by true random number generators (TRNGs) depends on the source of entropy. However, in TRNGs, sources of entropy are affected by environmental changes and this creates a correlation between the generated bit sequences. Postprocessing is required to remove the problem created by this correlation in TRNGs. In this study, an S-box-based postprocessing structure is proposed as an alternative to the postprocessing structures seen in the published literature. A ring oscillator (RO)-based TRNG is used to demonstrate the use of an S-box for postprocessing and the removal of correlations between number sequences. The statistical …

Harmonic Effects Optimization At A System Level Using A Harmonic Power Flowcontroller, Reza Mehri, Hossein Mokhtari

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Increase of nonlinear loads in industries has resulted in high levels of harmonic currents and consequently harmonic voltages in power networks. Harmonics have several negative effects such as higher energy losses and equipment life reduction. To reduce the levels of harmonics in power networks, different methods of harmonic suppression have been employed. The basic idea in all of these methods is to prevent harmonics from flowing into a power network at customer sides and the point of common coupling (PCC). Due to the costs, none of the existing mitigating methods result in a harmonic-free power system. The remaining harmonic currents, …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper proposes a new configuration for four-switch three-phase inverters based on a step-up switchedcapacitor cell, which is called switched-capacitor four-switch three-phase inverter (SCFSTPI). This converter includes eight power switches and two DC-link capacitors. Voltage step-up feature, high efficiency, integrated structure, and bidirectional power flow are the main contribution of this new configuration. A modified space vector modulation (SVM) strategy is presented to generate appropriate pulses for the converter. This modulation method also eliminates the effect of capacitors voltage imbalance problem on the inverter output voltage and current. Simulation and experimental results are presented and investigated to confirm the performance …

Sla-Aware Routing Strategy For Multi-Tenant Software-Defined Networks, Ali Malik, Ruairí De Fréin Jan 2020

Sla-Aware Routing Strategy For Multi-Tenant Software-Defined Networks, Ali Malik, Ruairí De Fréin

Conference papers

A crucial requirement for the network service provider is to satisfy the Service Level Agreements (SLA) that it has made with its customers. Coexisting network tenants may have agreed different SLAs, and thus, the service provider must be able to provide QoS differentiation in order to meet his contractual commitments. Current one-size-fits-all routing models are not appropriate for all network tenants if their individual SLA requirements are to be efficiently met. We propose a SDN-based multi-cost routing approach which allocates network resources based on a portfolio of tenant SLA, which achieves the goal of accommodating multiple tenants, given their SLAs. …

Active Learning For Auditory Hierarchy, William Coleman, Sarah Jane Delany, Charlie Cullen, Ming Yan Jan 2020

Active Learning For Auditory Hierarchy, William Coleman, Sarah Jane Delany, Charlie Cullen, Ming Yan

Conference papers

Much audio content today is rendered as a static stereo mix: fundamentally a fixed single entity. Object-based audio envisages the delivery of sound content using a collection of individual sound ‘objects’ controlled by accompanying metadata. This offers potential for audio to be delivered in a dynamic manner providing enhanced audio for consumers. One example of such treatment is the concept of applying varying levels of data compression to sound objects thereby reducing the volume of data to be transmitted in limited bandwidth situations. This application motivates the ability to accurately classify objects in terms of their ‘hierarchy’. That is, whether …

Increasing Performance Of Classifiers For Ssvep-Based Brain-Computer Interfaces Using Extension Methods, Ethan Douglas Webster

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) provide an alternative communication method that does not require standard physical mediums (speech, typing, etc.). These systems have been implemented to provide additional communication and control options for people with certain motor disabilities. Classification is an important part of BCI systems and consists of inferring user commands from brain activity. Supervised classification methods often achieve higher accuracy, but unsupervised classification methods are useful when training is not practical for the user. This thesis focuses on unsupervised classification algorithms used for a BCI speller application and presents extensions for two existing classifiers that improve classification accuracy and thus …

Invariant-Based Online Software Anomaly Detection And Selective Regression Testing, Yizhen Chen

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Software has been extensively used in various domains to provide online services. With the growing popularity of these types of applications, the quality of the software has a great impact on many of our daily activities [1]. Reliable software executions that deliver expected outcomes are essential for quality services. Software is considered abnormal when its behavior deviates from what is expected at any point during its execution. When anomalous behavior propagates to an exit point of the software and produces an incorrect output or an unexpected termination of the execution, it is considered a software failure. An anomaly may or …

The Effects Of Mixed-Initiative Visualization Systems On Exploratory Data Analysis, Alvitta Ottley, Adam Kern Jan 2020

The Effects Of Mixed-Initiative Visualization Systems On Exploratory Data Analysis, Alvitta Ottley, Adam Kern

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The primary purpose of information visualization is to act as a window between a user and the data. Historically, this has been accomplished via a single-agent framework: the only decision-maker in the relationship between visualization system and analyst is the analyst herself. Yet this framework arose not from first principles, but a necessity. Before this decade, computers were limited in their decision-making capabilities, especially in the face of large, complex datasets and visualization systems. This paper aims to present the design and evaluation of a mixed-initiative system that aids the user in handling large, complex datasets and dense visualization systems. …

This thesis presents the design, the implementation, and the evaluation of a database-oriented static program analysis engine for the PHP programming language. This engine analyzes PHP programs by representing their semantics using a graph-based data structure, which will be subsequently stored into a graph database. Such scheme will fundamentally facilitate various program analysis tasks such as static taint analysis, visualization, and data mining. Specifically, these complex program analysis tasks can now be translated into built-in declarative graph database operations with rich features. Our engine fundamentally differs from other existing static program analysis systems that mainly leverage intermediate representation (IRs) to …

Improving Usability Of Genetic Algorithms Through Self Adaptation On Static And Dynamic Environments, Reamonn Norat Jan 2020

Improving Usability Of Genetic Algorithms Through Self Adaptation On Static And Dynamic Environments, Reamonn Norat

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

We propose a self-adaptive genetic algorithm, called SAGA, for the purposes of improving the usability of genetic algorithms on both static and dynamic problems. Self-adaption can improve usability by automating some of the parameter tuning for the algorithm, a difficult and time-consuming process on canonical genetic algorithms. Reducing or simplifying the need for parameter tuning will help towards making genetic algorithms a more attractive tool for those who are not experts in the field of evolutionary algorithms, allowing more people to take advantage of the problem solving capabilities of a genetic algorithm on real-world problems. We test SAGA and analyze …

Mfpa: Mixed-Signal Field Programmable Array For Energy-Aware Compressive Signal Processing, Adrian Tatulian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Compressive Sensing (CS) is a signal processing technique which reduces the number of samples taken per frame to decrease energy, storage, and data transmission overheads, as well as reducing time taken for data acquisition in time-critical applications. The tradeoff in such an approach is increased complexity of signal reconstruction. While several algorithms have been developed for CS signal reconstruction, hardware implementation of these algorithms is still an area of active research. Prior work has sought to utilize parallelism available in reconstruction algorithms to minimize hardware overheads; however, such approaches are limited by the underlying limitations in CMOS technology. Herein, the …

Modeling Site Specific Urban Propagation Using A Variable Terrain Radiowave Parabolic Equation - Vertical Plane Launch (Vtrpe-Vpl) Hybrid Technique, Pierre Cadette

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The development of efficient algorithms for calculating propagation loss in site specific urban environments has been an active area of research for many years. This dissertation demonstrates that, for particular scenarios, a hybrid approach that combines the Variable Terrain Radiowave Parabolic Equation (VTRPE) and Vertical Plane Launch (VPL) models can be used to produce accurate results for a downrange region of interest. The hybrid approach consists of leveraging the 2-D parabolic equation method in the initial propagation region, where backscatter and out of plane energy can be neglected, then transitioning to the more computationally intensive 3-D ray launching method for …
