Parametric-Based Mobility For Providing Opportunistic Geocasting In Spatially Separated Wireless Sensor Networks, Selvi Ravindran, Narayanasamy Palanisamy, Vetriselvi Vetrian

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Uneven deployment and environment constraint leads to the formation of a spatially separated wireless sensor network (SS-WSN). Most of the traditional WSN architectures consist of static nodes that are densely deployed over a sensing area and are fully connected. SS-WSN is a group of disjoint subnetworks where connectivity is generally maintained by energy rich mobile nodes (ERMN), which roam about from one subnetwork to another. We propose an algorithm whereby the mobility of ERMN helps in distributing the geo message opportunistically in the region of interest. The routing consists of two phases: (1) transmission of the geo message from the …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Detecting high impedance faults in a distribution network is a great challenge and locating one is even more challenging. This paper will present an enhanced high impedance fault location algorithm based on the database technique. This paper is an extension of a faulty section identification algorithm developed previously. However, in this paper, the performance of the previous algorithm is investigated first in terms of different sampling rate and window size. Then these parameters will be used as a standard parameter to study the effectiveness of different types of mother wavelets. Each mother wavelet will be used to extract important features …

Synchronous Subgraphs In Networks, Navita Jain Jan 2016

Synchronous Subgraphs In Networks, Navita Jain

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Community detection is a central problem in network analysis. The majority of existing work defines communities as subsets of nodes that are structurally well-connected and isolated from the rest of the network. Apart from their underlying connectivity, nodes in real-world networks exhibit temporal activity: user posts in social networks, browsing activity on web pages and neuron activations in brain networks to name a few. While edges encode potential for community interactions, participation in the community can be quantified by synchronized member activity. Given both the network structure and individual node activity, how can we detect communities that are both well-connected …

In every power system there are consumer areas away from traditional power networks. Existing grid expansion can always be treated as one of the ways of powering them over long transmission and distribution lines. This is often characterized by significant transmission losses, as well as significant investments, depending on the distance and the infrastructure development. On the other hand, there are cases when these consumers are not connected to the power system and use alternative methods of supply. For that matter, possible solutions may use locally available energy sources. In this paper, comparative analyses between independent power supply through particular …

Impacts Of Soil Type And Moisture On The Capacity Of Multi-Carrier Modulation In Internet Of Underground Things, Abdul Salam, Mehmet C. Vuran

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Unique interactions between soil and communication components in wireless underground communications necessitate revisiting fundamental communication concepts from a different perspective. In this paper, capacity profile of wireless underground (UG) channel for multi-carrier transmission techniques is analyzed based on empirical antenna return loss and channel frequency response models in different soil types and moisture values. It is shown that data rates in excess of 124 Mbps are possible for distances up to 12 m. For shorter distances and lower soil moisture conditions, data rates of 362 Mbps can be achieved. It is also shown that due to soil moisture variations, UG …

Locality-Aware Dynamic Task Graph Scheduling, Jordyn Maglalang, Sriram Krishnamoorthy, Kunal Agrawal Jan 2016

Locality-Aware Dynamic Task Graph Scheduling, Jordyn Maglalang, Sriram Krishnamoorthy, Kunal Agrawal

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Dynamic task graph schedulers automatically balance work across processor cores by scheduling tasks among available threads while preserving dependences. In this paper, we design NabbitC, a provably efficient dynamic task graph scheduler that accounts for data locality on NUMA systems. NabbitC allows users to assign a color to each task representing the location (e.g., a processor core) that has the most efficient access to data needed during that node’s execution. NabbitC then automatically adjusts the scheduling so as to preferentially execute each node at the location that matches its color—leading to better locality because the node is likely to make …

Kinematic Modeling Of An Automated Laser Line Scanning System, Kiran Sunil Deshmukh Jan 2016

Kinematic Modeling Of An Automated Laser Line Scanning System, Kiran Sunil Deshmukh

Wayne State University Theses

This research work describes the geometric coordinate transformation in an automated laser line scanning system caused by movements required for scanning a component surface. The elements of an automated laser scanning system (robot, laser line scanner, and the component coordinate system) function as a mechanical linkage to obtain a trajectory on a component surface. This methodology solves the forward kinematics, derives the component surface, and uses inverse kinematic equations to characterize the movement of the entire automated scanning system on point trajectory. To reach a point on the component, joint angles of robot have been calculated. As a result, trajectory …

Novel H.265 Video Traffic Prediction Models Using Artificial Neural Networks, Collin Daly Jan 2016

Novel H.265 Video Traffic Prediction Models Using Artificial Neural Networks, Collin Daly

Honors College Theses

In this work, we propose the use of non-linear, autoregressive neural network models for predicting video frame sizes. This model utilizes H.265 encoded video traces as inputs and the predicted future frame sizes as outputs. This model is developed to predict ultra-high definition video frame encoded with H.265 within IP networks. The video I, P, and B frames are predicted separately to improve model prediction accuracy. This approach is verified in MATLAB using various H.265 video traces. The results indicate that the proposed models were able to predict the video traffic fairly accurately.

Adaptive Switched Capacitor Voltage Boost For Thermoelectric Generation, Rene A. Brito Jan 2016

Adaptive Switched Capacitor Voltage Boost For Thermoelectric Generation, Rene A. Brito

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Thermoelectric generators (TEG) and other forms of energy harvesting often provide voltages that are not directly usable by traditional electronics as levels are too low from the TEG. While increasing the number of thermoelectric elements can ultimately increase the power output, there is a tradeoff between size and power. By implementing charge pumps, a proposed circuit technique is described that can boost the TEG output to levels that can be used for energy harvesting applications. Current voltage boost circuits for TEGs simply boost a voltage by a set amount. The proposed circuit consists of an analog chip, to provide several …

Sparse Encoding Of Binocular Images For Depth Inference, Sheng Y. Lundquist, Dylan M. Paiton, Peter F. Schultz, Garrett T. Kenyon Jan 2016

Sparse Encoding Of Binocular Images For Depth Inference, Sheng Y. Lundquist, Dylan M. Paiton, Peter F. Schultz, Garrett T. Kenyon

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Sparse coding models have been widely used to decompose monocular images into linear combinations of small numbers of basis vectors drawn from an overcomplete set. However, little work has examined sparse coding in the context of stereopsis. In this paper, we demonstrate that sparse coding facilitates better depth inference with sparse activations than comparable feed-forward networks of the same size. This is likely due to the noise and redundancy of feed-forward activations, whereas sparse coding utilizes lateral competition to selectively encode image features within a narrow band of depths.

Reactive Rejuvenation Of Cmos Logic Paths Using Self-Activating Voltage Domains, Navid Khoshavi Najafabadi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aggressive CMOS technology scaling trends exacerbate the aging-related degradation of propagation delay and energy efficiency in nanoscale designs. Recently, power-gating has been utilized as an effective low-power design technique which has also been shown to alleviate some aging impacts. However, the use of MOSFETs to realize power-gated designs will also encounter aging-induced degradations in the sleep transistors themselves which necessitates the exploration of design strategies to utilize power-gating effectively to mitigate aging. In particular, Bias Temperature Instability (BTI) which occurs during activation of power-gated voltage islands is investigated with respect to the placement of the sleep transistor in the header …

Low Budget Forensic Drive Imaging Using Arm Based Single Board Computers, Eric Olson, Narasimha Shashidhar

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Traditional forensic analysis of hard disks and external media typically involves a powered down machine and “dead analysis” of these devices. Forensic acquisition of hard drives and external media has traditionally been by one of several means: standalone forensic duplicator; using a hardware write-blocker or dock attached to a laptop, computer, workstation, etc., forensic operating systems that live boot from a USB, CD/DVD or virtual machines with preinstalled operating systems. Standalone forensics acquisition and imaging devices generally cost thousands of dollars. In this paper, we propose the use of single board computers as forensic imaging devices. Single board computers can …
