A Comparative Study Of Underwater Robot Path Planning Algorithms For Adaptive Sampling In A Network Of Sensors, Sreeja Banerjee

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Monitoring lakes, rivers, and oceans is critical to improving our understanding of complex large-scale ecosystems. We introduce a method of underwater monitoring using semi-mobile underwater sensor networks and mobile underwater robots in this thesis. The underwater robots can move freely in all dimension while the sensor nodes are anchored to the bottom of the water column and can move only up and down along the depth of the water column. We develop three different algorithms to optimize the path of the underwater robot and the positions of the sensors to improve the overall quality of sensing of an area of …

Expected Cost Penalty Due To Deviation From Security-Constrained Dispatch, Veravut Dheraprasart Aug 2014

Expected Cost Penalty Due To Deviation From Security-Constrained Dispatch, Veravut Dheraprasart

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis introduces and evaluates a new index called ”Expected Cost Penalty Due to Deviation From Security Constrained Dispatch” (ECP_SCD) for interconnected power systems planning. This index represents the optimal operating cost of the system taking into account the uncertainties such as random failure of generating units, transformer, and transmission lines in interconnected power systems. The significance of this index is that it represents the minimum operating cost for a contingency event and can be used for contingency screening (ranking). This index also indicates the impact of equipment reliability on the average cost penalty of all contingency events. Moreover, this …

Numerical Investigation Of The Nonlinear Dynamics Of A Hybrid Acousto-Optic Bragg Cell With A Variable Feedback Gain, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Hao Zhou

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Since around 1979, the operation of an acousto-optic Bragg cell under positive first-order feedback via amplification and delay in the loop has been studied extensively by several groups [1-3]. In recent work, the analysis of the nonlinear dynamics (NLD) of the system was extended to include bistable maps and Lyapunov exponents, and application of the chaos for signal encryption and decryption for uniform plane waves. The present work originated with the problem of a variable photodetector aperture opening relative to the first-order light. This potentially complex problem is simplified by assuming instead a variable feedback gain ( β ~ (t)), …

Development And Applications Of The Expanded Equivalent Fluid Method, Bharath Kumar Kandula Aug 2014

Development And Applications Of The Expanded Equivalent Fluid Method, Bharath Kumar Kandula

Dissertations

Ocean acoustics is the study of sound in the oceans. Electromagnetic waves attenuate rapidly in the water medium. Sound is the best means to transmit information underwater. Computational numerical simulations play an important role in ocean acoustics. Simulations of acoustic propagation in the oceans are challenging due to the complexities involved in the ocean environment. Different methods have been developed to simulate underwater sound propagation. The Parabolic-Equation (PE) method is the best choice in several ocean acoustic problems. In shallow water acoustic experiments, sound loses some of its energy when it interacts with the bottom. An equivalent fluid technique was …

A Novel Nmf-Based Dwi Cad Framework For Prostate Cancer., Patrick Mcclure

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, a computer aided diagnostic (CAD) framework for detecting prostate cancer in DWI data is proposed. The proposed CAD method consists of two frameworks that use nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) to learn meaningful features from sets of high-dimensional data. The first technique, is a three dimensional (3D) level-set DWI prostate segmentation algorithm guided by a novel probabilistic speed function. This speed function is driven by the features learned by NMF from 3D appearance, shape, and spatial data. The second technique, is a probabilistic classifier that seeks to label a prostate segmented from DWI data as either alignat, contain …

The ultimate goal of this thesis is to develop a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for the accurate and early diagnosis of ASDs using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). This CAD system consists of three main steps. First, the brain tissues are segmented based on three image descriptors: a visual appearance model that has …

Context Dependent Spectral Unmixing., Hamdi Jenzri Aug 2014

Context Dependent Spectral Unmixing., Hamdi Jenzri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A hyperspectral unmixing algorithm that finds multiple sets of endmembers is proposed. The algorithm, called Context Dependent Spectral Unmixing (CDSU), is a local approach that adapts the unmixing to different regions of the spectral space. It is based on a novel function that combines context identification and unmixing. This joint objective function models contexts as compact clusters and uses the linear mixing model as the basis for unmixing. Several variations of the CDSU, that provide additional desirable features, are also proposed. First, the Context Dependent Spectral unmixing using the Mahalanobis Distance (CDSUM) offers the advantage of identifying non-spherical clusters in …

Modeling And Development Of Human Interface For Pedestrian Simulator, Romesh Khaddar Aug 2014

Modeling And Development Of Human Interface For Pedestrian Simulator, Romesh Khaddar

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

According to Traveler opinion and perception survey of 2005, 107.4 million Americans use walking as regular mode of travel, which amounts to 51% of American population. In 2009, 4092 pedestrian fatalities have been reported nationwide with a fatality rate of 1.33 which totals 59,000 crashes. Also, pedestrians are over represented in crash data by accounting more than 12% of fatalities but on 10.9% of trips. This makes a perfect case for understanding the causes behind such statistics, calling for a continuous research on pedestrians walking behavior and their interactions with surroundings.

Current research in pedestrian simulation focuses on surveys and …

Gate Monte Carlo Simulations In A Cloud Computing Environment, Blake Austin Rowedder

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The GEANT4-based GATE is a unique and powerful Monte Carlo (MC) platform, which provides a single code library allowing the simulation of specific medical physics applications, e.g. PET, SPECT, CT, radiotherapy, and hadron therapy. However, this rigorous yet flexible platform is used only sparingly in the clinic due to its lengthy calculation time. By accessing the powerful computational resources of a cloud computing environment, GATE's runtime can be significantly reduced to clinically feasible levels without the sizable investment of a local high performance cluster. This study investigated a reliable and efficient execution of GATE MC simulations using a commercial cloud …

Stereo Vision System Module For Low-Cost Fpgas For Autonomous Mobile Robots, Connor Citron Aug 2014

Stereo Vision System Module For Low-Cost Fpgas For Autonomous Mobile Robots, Connor Citron

Master's Theses

Stereo vision uses two adjacent cameras to create a 3D image of the world. A depth map can be created by comparing the offset of the corresponding pixels from the two cameras. However, for real-time stereo vision, the image data needs to be processed at a reasonable frame rate. Real-time stereo vision allows for mobile robots to more easily navigate terrain and interact with objects by providing both the images from the cameras and the depth of the objects. Fortunately, the image processing can be parallelized in order to increase the processing speed. Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are highly parallelizable …

These equations are a set of partial differential equations that model the …

Towards Efficient File Sharing And Packet Routing In Mobile Opportunistic Networks, Kang Chen Aug 2014

Towards Efficient File Sharing And Packet Routing In Mobile Opportunistic Networks, Kang Chen

All Dissertations

With the increasing popularity of portable digital devices (e.g., smartphones, laptops, and tablets), mobile opportunistic networks (MONs) [40, 90] consisting of portable devices have attracted much attention recently. MONs are also known as pocket switched networks (PSNs) [52]. MONs can be regarded as a special form of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) [7] or delay tolerant networks (DTNs) [35, 56]. In such networks, mobile nodes (devices) move continuously and meet opportunistically. Two mobile nodes can communicate with each other only when they are within the communication range of each other in a peer-to-peer (P2P) manner (i.e., without the need of …

A Methodology And Tool For Concurrent Fault Injection, Zhongyin Zhang Jul 2014

A Methodology And Tool For Concurrent Fault Injection, Zhongyin Zhang

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

As the speed of microprocessors tails off, utilizing multiple processing cores per chip is becoming a common way for developers to achieve higher performance. However, writing concurrent programs can be a big challenge because of common concurrency faults. Because concurrency faults are hard to detect and reproduce, traditional testing techniques are not suitable. New techniques are needed, and these must be assessed. A typical method for assessing testing techniques is to embed faults in programs using mutation tools, and assess the ability of techniques to detect these. Although mutation testing techniques can be used to represent common faults, approaches for …

Performance Analysis Of Mobile Ad-Hoc Routing Protocols By Varying Mobility, Speed And Network Load, Nilotpal Sarmah

Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

One of the most promising network that has emerged from the technology world is the mobile ad-hoc network or MANET. It is a type of multi-hop network. Wireless by nature, MANETs do not have a specific network infrastructure. It is a collection of wireless mobile devices that communicate with each other without the help of any third party backbone like a base-station or a router. It can be hard to imagine how every node in this type of network communicate with one another without having a router. In MANETs, nodes change locations with time, configure themselves and get the information …

Measuring Autonomy And Solving General Stabilization Problems With Multi-Agent Systems, Rasheed A. Rajabzadeh Jul 2014

Measuring Autonomy And Solving General Stabilization Problems With Multi-Agent Systems, Rasheed A. Rajabzadeh

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Many distributed complex problems address a particular form of resource scheduling where proper resource management can cut costs by stabilizing a set of stochastic fluctuating parameters. Wireless sensor network communication, supply chain management, stock trading, intelligent traffic management, and smart grid systems are examples of these problems. Among the various solutions, a common strategy often used to address this type of problems is fluctuation reduction via resource buffering combined with load shifting. Respectively, stable wireless communication, demand for supplies, liquidity, traffic speed, and power demand reduce cost and can be achieved by properly managing sensor data buffers, warehouses, capital, distance …

Thickness Determination Of Few-Layer Hexagonal Boron Nitride Films By Scanning Electron Microscopy And Auger Electron Spectroscopy, P. Sutter, E. Sutter Jul 2014

Thickness Determination Of Few-Layer Hexagonal Boron Nitride Films By Scanning Electron Microscopy And Auger Electron Spectroscopy, P. Sutter, E. Sutter

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We assess scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) for thickness measurements on few-layer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), the layered dielectric of choice for integration with graphene and other two-dimensional materials. Observations on h-BN islands with large, atomically flat terraces show that the secondary electron intensity in SEM reflects monolayer height changes in films up to least 10 atomic layers thickness. From a quantitative analysis of AES data, the energy-dependent electron escape depth in h-BN films is deduced. The results show that AES is suitable for absolute thickness measurements of few-layer h-BN of 1 to 6 layers.

Predicting Professional Golfer Performance Using Proprietary Pga Tour “Shotlink” Data, Brian Leahy Jul 2014

Predicting Professional Golfer Performance Using Proprietary Pga Tour “Shotlink” Data, Brian Leahy

Dissertations

It can cost a minimum of $110,000 a year for a professional golfer to compete on the PGA Tour. For the successful golfers who earn millions every year, this is not a problem. For those lower ranked golfers, it is a problem. This is due to the fact that almost half the golfers who compete in any one PGA Tour tournament will not get paid, because they have missed the dreaded cut. When a golfer begins to consistently miss the cut, they can come under financial pressure which may manifest itself into poor further tournament performances. This dissertation attempts to …

A Brain Robot Interface For Autonomous Activities Of Daily Living Tasks, Don Indika Upashantha Pathirage Jul 2014

A Brain Robot Interface For Autonomous Activities Of Daily Living Tasks, Don Indika Upashantha Pathirage

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There have been substantial improvements in the area of rehabilitation robotics in the recent past. However, these advances are inaccessible to a large number of people with disabilities who are in most need of such assistance. This group includes people who are in a severely paralyzed state, that they are completely "locked-in" in their own bodies. Such persons usually retain full cognitive abilities, but have no voluntary muscle control.

For these persons, a Brain Computer Interface (BCI) is often the only way to communicate with the outside world and/or control an assistive device. One major drawback to BCI devices is …

Self-Organizing Microstructures Orientation Control In Femtosecond Laser Patterning On Silicon Surface, Pengjun Liu, Lan Jiang, Jie Hu, Shuai Zhang, Yongfeng Lu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Self-organizing rippled microstructures are induced on silicon surface by linearly polarized femtosecond laser pulses. At a near threshold fluence, it is observed that ripple orientation is co-determined by the laser polarization direction and laser scanning parameters (scanning direction and scanning speed) in surface patterning process. Under fixed laser polarization, the ripple orientation can be controlled to rotate by about 40° through changing laser scanning parameters. In addition, it is also observed that the ripple morphology is sensitive to the laser scanning direction, and it is an optimal choice to obtain ordered ripple structures when the angle between laser scanning and …

Oswald Physical And Engineering Sciences Honorable Mention: Summer 2012 Lip6 Write Up, Josiah Hanna Jul 2014

Oswald Physical And Engineering Sciences Honorable Mention: Summer 2012 Lip6 Write Up, Josiah Hanna

Kaleidoscope

Planning under uncertainty is a central problem in developing intelligent autonomous systems. The traditional representation for these problems is a Markov Decision Process (MDP). The MDP model can be extended to a Multi-criteria MDP (MMDP) for planning under uncertainty while trying to optimize multiple criteria. However, due to the trade-offs involved in multi criteria problems there may be infinitely many optimal solutions. The focus of this project has been to find a method that efficiently computes a subset of solutions that represents the entire set of optimal solutions for bi-objective MDPs.

Human Brain Networks: Spiking Neuron Models, Multistability, Synchronization, Thermodynamics, Maximum Entropy Production, And Anesthetic Cascade Mechanisms, Wassim H. Haddad, Qing Hui, James M. Bailey

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Advances in neuroscience have been closely linked to mathematical modeling beginning with the integrate-and-fire model of Lapicque and proceeding through the modeling of the action potential by Hodgkin and Huxley to the current era. The fundamental building block of the central nervous system, the neuron, may be thought of as a dynamic element that is “excitable”, and can generate a pulse or spike whenever the electrochemical potential across the cell membrane of the neuron exceeds a threshold. A key application of nonlinear dynamical systems theory to the neurosciences is to study phenomena of the central nervous system that exhibit nearly …
