Opf-Based Reactive Power Planning And Voltage Stability Limit Improvement Under Single Line Outage Contingency Condition Through Evolutionary Algorithms, Sakthivel Padaiyatchi, Mary Daniel

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Reactive power planning is vital for maintaining the voltage stability of power systems and evolutionary algorithms are highly useful for achieving this task. This paper compares the effectiveness of the differential evolution (DE) and evolutionary programming (EP) algorithms in optimizing the reactive power planning of power systems under line outage contingency conditions. DE is efficient in exploration through the search space of the problem, while EP is simple and easy to implement. The low cost but fast response thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC) flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) device is incorporated to control the power flows. The optimal settings of …

Operational Characteristics Of A Filtering Rectifier Transformer For Industrial Power Systems, Zhiyu Zhao, Longfu Luo, Jiazhu Xu, Thanhngoc Tran, Zhiwen Zhang Jan 2013

Operational Characteristics Of A Filtering Rectifier Transformer For Industrial Power Systems, Zhiyu Zhao, Longfu Luo, Jiazhu Xu, Thanhngoc Tran, Zhiwen Zhang

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Many conventional methods focus on reducing the harmful impact of the poor power quality in industrial rectifier systems, but they focus more on the harmonic problems of the utility grid than they do on that of the rectifier transformer; hence, the rectifier transformer would still be adversely affected by harmonic pollution. In order to solve the problem, a filtering rectifier transformer is proposed that adopts a harmonic current drainage system that incorporates tertiary winding and tuned harmonic filters. The impedance of the tertiary winding is specially designed and the tuned harmonic filters work together to restrain the harmonic current and …

Learning With An Insufficient Supply Of Data Via Knowledge Transfer And Sharing, Samir Al-Stouhi Jan 2013

Learning With An Insufficient Supply Of Data Via Knowledge Transfer And Sharing, Samir Al-Stouhi

Wayne State University Dissertations

As machine learning methods extend to more complex and diverse set of problems, situations arise where the complexity and availability of data presents a situation where the information source is not "adequate" to generate a representative hypothesis. Learning from multiple sources of data is a promising research direction as researchers leverage ever more diverse sources of information. Since data is not readily available, knowledge has to be transferred from other sources and new methods (both supervised and un-supervised) have to be developed to selectively share and transfer knowledge. In this dissertation, we present both supervised and un-supervised techniques to tackle …

Optimized Features Selection For Gender Classification Using Optimization Algorithms, Sajid Ali Khan, Muhammad Nazir, Naveed Riaz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Optimized feature selection is an important task in gender classification. The optimized features not only reduce the dimensions, but also reduce the error rate. In this paper, we have proposed a technique for the extraction of facial features using both appearance-based and geometric-based feature extraction methods. The extracted features are then optimized using particle swarm optimization (PSO) and the bee algorithm. The geometric-based features are optimized by PSO with ensemble classifier optimization by the genetic algorithm. Using this approach, we have obtained promising results in terms of the classification error rate and computation time minimization. Moreover, our optimized feature-based method …

A Computer-Aided Diagnosis System For Breast Cancer Detection By Using A Curvelet Transform, Nebi̇ Gedi̇k, Ayten Atasoy

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The most common type of cancer among women worldwide is breast cancer. Early detection of breast cancer is very important to reduce the fatality rate. For the hundreds of mammographic images scanned by a radiologist, only a few are cancerous. While detecting abnormalities, some of them may be missed, as the detection of suspicious and abnormal images is a recurrent mission that causes fatigue and eyestrain. In this paper, a computer-aided diagnosis system using the curvelet transform (CT) algorithm is proposed for interpreting mammograms to improve the decision making. The purpose of this study is to develop a method for …

Optimal Sizing And Siting Distributed Generation Resources Using A Multiobjective Algorithm, Seyed Amir Hosseini, Seyed Siavash Karimi Madahi, Farzad Razavi, Mohsen Karami, Ali Asghar Ghadimi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The restructuring of the electrical market, improvement in the technologies of energy production, and energy crisis have paved the way for increasing applications of distributed generation (DG) resources in recent years. Installing DG units in a distribution network may result in positive impacts, such as voltage profile improvement and loss reduction, and negative impacts, such as an increase in the short-circuit level. These impacts depend on the type, capacity, and place of these resources. Therefore, finding the optimal place and capacity of DG resources is of crucial importance. Accordingly, this paper is aimed at finding the optimal place and capacity …

Extracting Fuzzy Rules For The Diagnosis Of Breast Cancer, Ali̇ Keleş, Aytürk Keleş

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

About one million women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Breast cancer makes up one-third of all cancer diagnoses in women. Diagnosing breast cancer early is vital for successful treatment. Among the breast cancer screening methods available today, mammography is the most effective, although the low precision rate of breast biopsy caused by mammogram interpretation results in approximately 70% unnecessary biopsies with benign outcomes. The aim of this study was to extract strong diagnostic fuzzy rules for the inference engine of an expert system to be used for the diagnosis of breast cancer. These rules have been extracted through …

Multireference Tdoa-Based Source Localization, Hamid Torbati Fard, Mahmoud Atashbar, Yaser Norouzi, Farrokh Hojjat Kashani Jan 2013

Multireference Tdoa-Based Source Localization, Hamid Torbati Fard, Mahmoud Atashbar, Yaser Norouzi, Farrokh Hojjat Kashani

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Time difference of arrival (TDOA)-based methods usually achieve the most accurate source localization in passive systems. In these methods, one of the sensors is assigned as the reference and the TDOA of the others with respect to the reference is measured. The source location is estimated by processing these TDOAs. In this paper, a multireference maximum likelihood (ML)-Taylor algorithm is proposed in order to decrease the source localization error of the TDOA methods. In the proposed algorithm, TDOAs are measured assuming 2 different reference sensors, and then the ML objective function of this multireference TDOA algorithm is derived and solved …

Roadway illumination is a vital component of safety while driving during the night. There are regulations in place to ensure all publicly maintained roads are properly lit, but the validation process is too time consuming, costly, and dangerous for adequate data collection studies. The work in this thesis is aimed toward remedying this problem by creating an Advanced Lighting Measurement System (ALMS) capable of recording illumination readings while traveling at normal driving speeds. This solution is based on the Arduino Uno development board, a cost effective yet powerful embedded platform. This thesis involves collecting data along 100 centerline miles of …

Robotic Swarming Without Inter-Agent Communication, Daniel Jonathan Standish Jan 2013

Robotic Swarming Without Inter-Agent Communication, Daniel Jonathan Standish

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many physical and algorithmic swarms utilize inter-agent communication to achieve advanced swarming behaviors. These swarms are inspired by biological swarms that can be seen throughout nature and include bee swarms, ant colonies, fish schools, and bird flocks. These biological swarms do not utilize inter-agent communication like their physical and algorithmic counterparts. Instead, organisms in nature rely on a local awareness of other swarm members that facilitates proper swarm motion and behavior. This research aims to pursue an effective swarm algorithm using only line-of-sight proximity information and no inter-agent communication. It is expected that the swarm performance will be lower than …

A Multi-Parameter Functional Side Channel Analysis Method For Hardware Trojan Detection In Untrusted Fpga Bitstreams, Christopher William Bell Jan 2013

A Multi-Parameter Functional Side Channel Analysis Method For Hardware Trojan Detection In Untrusted Fpga Bitstreams, Christopher William Bell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Hardware Trojan Horses (HTHs or Trojans) are malicious design modifications intended to cause the design to function incorrectly. Globalization of the IC development industry has created new opportunities for rogue agents to compromise a design in such a way. Offshore foundries cannot always be trusted, and the use of trusted foundries is not always practical or economical. There is a pressing need for a method to reliably detect these Trojans, to prevent compromised designs from being put into production.

This thesis proposes a multi-parameter analysis method that is capable of reliably detecting function-altering and performance-degrading Trojans in FPGA bitstreams. It …

This thesis presents a new human-like upper limb and hand motion generating method. The work is based on Functional Principal Component Analysis and Quadratic Programming. The human-like motion generating problem is formulated in a framework of minimizing the difference of the dynamic profile of the optimal trajectory and the known types of trajectory. Statistical analysis is applied to the pre-captured human motion records to work in a low dimensional space. A novel PCA FPCA hybrid motion recognition method is proposed. This method is implemented on human grasping data to demonstrate its advantage in human motion recognition. One human grasping hierarchy …

Kernel Density Metric Learning, Yujie He, Wenlin Chen, Yixin Chen Jan 2013

Kernel Density Metric Learning, Yujie He, Wenlin Chen, Yixin Chen

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper introduces a supervised metric learning algorithm, called kernel density metric learning (KDML), which is easy to use and provides nonlinear, probability-based distance measures. KDML constructs a direct nonlinear mapping from the original input space into a feature space based on kernel density estimation. The nonlinear mapping in KDML embodies established distance measures between probability density functions, and leads to correct classification on datasets for which linear metric learning methods would fail. Existing metric learning algorithms, such as large margin nearest neighbors (LMNN), can then be applied to the KDML features to learn a Mahalanobis distance. We also propose …

Parallel Real-Time Scheduling Of Dags, Abusayeed Saifullah, David Ferry, Jing Li, Kunal Agrawal, Chenyang Lu, Christopher Gill

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Recently, multi-core processors have become mainstream in processor design. To take full advantage of multi-core processing, computation-intensive real-time systems must exploit intra-task parallelism. In this paper, we address the open problem of real-time scheduling for a general model of deterministic parallel tasks, where each task is represented as a directed acyclic graph (DAG) with nodes having arbitrary execution requirements. We prove processor-speed augmentation bounds for both preemptive and non-preemptive real-time scheduling for general DAG tasks on multi-core processors. We first decompose each DAG into sequential tasks with their own release times and deadlines. Then we prove that these decomposed tasks …

Simple Analytic Performance Models For Streaming Data Applications Deployed On Diverse Architectures, Jonathan C. Beard, Roger D. Chamberlain, Mark A. Franklin

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Modern hardware is inherently heterogeneous. With heterogeneity comes multiple abstraction layers that hide underlying complex systems. While hidden, this complexity makes quantitative performance modeling a difficult task. Designers of high-performance streaming applications for heterogeneous systems must contend with unpredictable and often non-generalizable models to predict performance of a particular application and hardware mapping. This paper outlines a computationally simple approach that can be used to model the overall throughput and buffering needs of a streaming application on heterogeneous hardware. The model presented is based upon a hybrid maximum flow and decomposed discrete queueing model. The utility of the model is …

Self-Adapting Mac Layer For Wireless Sensor Networks, Mo Sha, Meng Xu, Chenyang Lu, Linh T.X. Phan, Tae-Suk Kim, Taerim Park

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The integration of wireless sensors with mobile phones is gaining momentum as an enabling platform for numerous emerging applications. These mobile systems face dynamic environments where both application requirements and ambient wireless conditions change frequently. Despite the existence of many MAC protocols however, none can provide optimal performance along multiple dimensions, in particular when the conditions are frequently changing. Instead of pursuing a one-MAC-fit all approach we present a Self-Adapting MAC Layer (SAML) comprising (1) a Reconfigurable MAC Architecture (RMA) that can switch to different MAC protocols at run time and (2) a learning-based MAC Selection Engine that selects the …

Real-Time Multi-Core Virtual Machine Scheduling In Xen, Sisu Xi, Meng Xu, Chenyang Lu, Linh T.X. Phan, Christopher Gill, Olga Sokolsky, Insup Lee

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Recent years have witnessed two major trends in the development of complex real-time systems. First, to reduce cost and enhance flexibility, multiple systems are sharing common computing platforms via virtualization technology, instead of being deployed separately on physically isolated hosts. Second, multicore processors are increasingly being used in real-time systems. The integration of real-time systems as virtual machines (VMs) atop common multicore platforms raises significant new research challenges in meeting the real-time performance requirements of multiple systems.

Synergistically Coupling Of Solid State Drives And Hard Disks For Qos-Aware Virtual Memory, Ke Liu Jan 2013

Synergistically Coupling Of Solid State Drives And Hard Disks For Qos-Aware Virtual Memory, Ke Liu

Wayne State University Theses

With significant advantages in capacity, power consumption, and price, solid state disk (SSD) has good potential to be employed as an extension of dynamic random-access memory, such that applications with large working sets could run efficiently on a modestly configured system. While initial results reported in recent works show promising prospects for this use of SSD by incorporating it into the management of virtual memory, frequent writes from write-intensive programs could quickly wear out SSD, making the idea less practical.

This thesis makes four contributions towards solving this issue. First, we propose a scheme, HybridSwap, that integrates a hard disk …

Dissertations

Current developments in computing have shown the advantage of using one or more Graphic Processing Units (GPU) to boost the performance of many computationally intensive applications but there are still limits to these GPU-enhanced systems. The major factors that contribute to the limitations of GPU(s) for High Performance Computing (HPC) can be categorized as hardware and software oriented in nature. Understanding how these factors affect performance is essential to develop efficient and robust applications codes that employ one or more GPU devices as powerful co-processors for HPC computational modeling. The present work analyzes and understands the intrinsic interrelationship of both …

Computational Analysis And Prediction Of Genome-Wide Protein Targeting Signals And Localization, Jhih-Rong Lin Jan 2013

Computational Analysis And Prediction Of Genome-Wide Protein Targeting Signals And Localization, Jhih-Rong Lin

Theses and Dissertations

Computational prediction of protein subcellular localization can greatly help to elucidate its functions. Despite the existence of dozens of protein localization prediction algorithms, the prediction accuracy and coverage are still low. Several ensemble algorithms have been proposed to improve the prediction performance, which usually include as many as 10 or more individual localization algorithms. However, their performance is still limited by the running complexity and redundancy among individual prediction algorithms. In the first part of the dissertation, we propose a novel method for rational design of minimalist ensemble algorithms for practical genome-wide protein subcellular localization prediction. The algorithm is based …

Asynchronous Logic Design With Increased Fault Tolerance And Optimized For Subthreshold Operation, Ivan Santos Jan 2013

Asynchronous Logic Design With Increased Fault Tolerance And Optimized For Subthreshold Operation, Ivan Santos

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Synchronization has always been an essential feature in electronic circuits, in which functionality is achieved by an appropriate flow of data with respect to time. An ideal concept of logic design would require every operation to happen instantly; however, the application of this principle to electronics is governed by the laws of physics, which influence the time to execute a process. In fact, the speed at which a microprocessor can perform logic operations is determined by the time that charging and discharging capacitive loads requires, and the time that electric signals spend when traveling through the circuitry. Consequently, the variation …

Interest Aware Peoplerank: Towards Effective Social-Based Opportunistic Advertising, Soumaia Al Ayyat Jan 2013

Interest Aware Peoplerank: Towards Effective Social-Based Opportunistic Advertising, Soumaia Al Ayyat

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

Various emerging context aware social-based applications and services assume constant non-disruptive connectivity. Mobile advertisers in such environments want to reach potentially interested users in a given proximity and within a specified short duration, whether these users are connected to the network or not. While opportunistic forwarding algorithms can be leveraged for forwarding these advertisements, there is little incentive for those not interested in the ad to act as forwarders. Our goal in this paper is to leverage explicit interest, gathered from a user’s social profile, and integrate it with social-based opportunistic forwarding algorithms in order to enable soft real time …

The Use Of Complexity Theory And Strange Attractors To Understand And Explain Information System Development, Arthur P. Tomasino Jan 2013

The Use Of Complexity Theory And Strange Attractors To Understand And Explain Information System Development, Arthur P. Tomasino

2013

In spite of the best efforts of researchers and practitioners, Information Systems (IS) developers are having problems "getting it right". IS developments are challenged by the emergence of unanticipated IS characteristics undermining managers ability to predict and manage IS change. Because IS are complex, development formulas, best practices or development guides simply will not work. The difficulties in these system developments stem from the complexity of IS arising from the inter-relationship, interaction, and interconnectivity of the elements in the system and its environment. This research uses complexity concepts to help solve the problem with IS development and explain why so …

Routing, Localization And Positioning Protocols For Wireless Sensor And Actor Networks, Mustafa Akbas Jan 2013

Routing, Localization And Positioning Protocols For Wireless Sensor And Actor Networks, Mustafa Akbas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wireless sensor and actor networks (WSANs) are distributed systems of sensor nodes and actors that are interconnected over the wireless medium. Sensor nodes collect information about the physical world and transmit the data to actors by using one-hop or multi-hop communications. Actors collect information from the sensor nodes, process the information, take decisions and react to the events. This dissertation presents contributions to the methods of routing, localization and positioning in WSANs for practical applications. We first propose a routing protocol with service differentiation for WSANs with stationary nodes. In this setting, we also adapt a sports ranking algorithm to …
