Algorithms And Data Structures For Efficient Timing Analysis Of Asynchronous Real-Time Systems, Yingying Zhang Jan 2013

Algorithms And Data Structures For Efficient Timing Analysis Of Asynchronous Real-Time Systems, Yingying Zhang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a framework to verify asynchronous real-time systems based on model checking. These systems are modeled by using a common modeling formalism named Labeled Petri-nets(LPNs).

In order to verify the real-time systems algorithmically, the zone-based timing analysis method is used for LPNs. It searches the state space with timing information (represented by zones). When there is a high degree of concurrency in the model, firing concurrent enabled transitions in different order may result in different zones, and these zones may be combined without affecting the verification result. Since the zone-based method could not deal with this problem efficiently, …

Relation Lifting, With An Application To The Many-Valued Cover Modality, Marta Bílková, Alexander Kurz, Daniela Petrişan, Jirí Velebil Jan 2013

Relation Lifting, With An Application To The Many-Valued Cover Modality, Marta Bílková, Alexander Kurz, Daniela Petrişan, Jirí Velebil

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We introduce basic notions and results about relation liftings on categories enriched in a commutative quantale. We derive two necessary and sufficient conditions for a 2-functor T to admit a functorial relation lifting: one is the existence of a distributive law of T over the “powerset monad” on categories, one is the preservation by T of “exactness” of certain squares. Both characterisations are generalisations of the “classical” results known for set functors: the first characterisation generalises the existence of a distributive law over the genuine powerset monad, the second generalises preservation of weak pullbacks.

The results presented in this paper …

A Case Study Towards Verification Of The Utility Of Analytical Models In Selecting Checkpoint Intervals, Michael Joseph Harney Jan 2013

A Case Study Towards Verification Of The Utility Of Analytical Models In Selecting Checkpoint Intervals, Michael Joseph Harney

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

As high performance computing (HPC) systems grow larger, with increasing numbers of components, failures become more common. Codes that utilize large numbers of nodes and run for long periods of time must take such failures into account and adopt fault tolerance mechanisms to avoid loss of computation and, thus, system utilization. One of those mechanisms is checkpoint/restart. Although analytical models exist to guide users in the selection of an appropriate checkpoint interval, these models are based on assumptions that may not always be true. This thesis examines some of these assumptions, in particular, the consistency of parameters like Mean Time …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

By monitoring the Q wave/T wave (QT) interval computed from electrocardiography (ECG) signals during sleep, it is possible to create a link between the ventricular repolarization and sleep stages. In this study, we aimed to find a robust and simple approach to automatically determine the fiducials on each 30-s sleep epoch, such as the Q, R, and T-end points, on long sleep ECG recordings in order to statistically analyze the effect of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and sleep stages on QT intervals. This is a retrospective study in which the ECG data extracted from the polysomnography recordings of 7 healthy …

Encoderless Position Estimation And Error Correction Techniques For Miniature Mobile Robots, Farshad Arvin, Masoud Bekravi Jan 2013

Encoderless Position Estimation And Error Correction Techniques For Miniature Mobile Robots, Farshad Arvin, Masoud Bekravi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents an encoderless position estimation technique for miniature-sized mobile robots. Odometry techniques, which are based on the hardware components, are commonly used for calculating the geometric location of mobile robots. Therefore, the robot must be equipped with an appropriate sensor to measure the motion. However, due to the hardware limitations of some robots, employing extra hardware is impossible. On the other hand, in swarm robotic research, which uses a large number of mobile robots, equipping the robots with motion sensors might be costly. In this study, the trajectory of the robot is divided into several small displacements over …

Preserving Location Privacy For A Group Of Users, Maede Ashouri-Talouki, Ahmad Baraani Dastjerdi, Ali̇ Aydin Selçuk

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Location privacy is an interesting problem that has been receiving considerable attention. This problem has been widely discussed from the individual point of view; however, there exist only a few works that support location privacy for a group of users. In this paper we consider the problem of supporting location privacy for a group of users during the use of location-based services (LBSs). We assume a group of users who want to benefit from a LBS and find the nearest meeting place that minimizes their aggregate distance. Each user in this scenario wants to protect his or her location from …

Optimal Iterative Learning Control Design For Generator Voltage Regulation System, Mohsen Rezaei Estakhrouieh, Ali Akbar Gharaveisi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The purpose of this paper is to design a good tracking controller for the generator automatic voltage regulator (AVR) system. It uses an iterative learning control (ILC) algorithm as a control rule and tries to keep voltage error as low as possible, while replying to set point changes as fast as possible. Two models of ILC are discussed: P-type learning and linear quadratic (LQ) optimal design. The results of designing by LQ optimal method are compared with a Ziegler--Nichols proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller. The effects of changing different parameters are investigated and illustrated by simulation. In order to provide better robustness …

Swarm Optimization Tuned Mamdani Fuzzy Controller For Diabetes Delayed Model, Mohammad Hassan Khooban, Davood Nazari Maryam Abadi, Alireza Alfi, Mehdi Siahi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Diabetes is a chronic disease in which there are high levels of sugar in the blood. Insulin is a hormone that regulates the blood glucose level in the body. Diabetes mellitus can be caused by too little insulin, a resistance to insulin, or both. Although research activities on controlling blood glucose have been attempted to lower the blood glucose level in the quickest possible time, there are some shortages in the amount of the insulin injection. In this paper, a complete model of the glucose--insulin regulation system, which is a nonlinear delay differential model, is used. The purpose of this …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Dengue is a critical communicable and vector-borne disease and is becoming a serious concern in Malaysia. It is important to have an early detection system that could provide immediate action, such as the control of dengue transmission at a specific location. However, the available strategy and action may give long-term effects to the community since inaccurate decision making or prediction may lead to other circumstances. Moreover, the need to have a system that can detect the outbreak in a reasonable amount of time is critical. In this study, a nature-inspired computing technique, the artificial immune system (AIS), is used for …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Single satellite-to-satellite passive tracking techniques have great significance in space surveillance systems. A new passive modified iterated extended Kalman particle filter (MIEKPF) using bearings-only measurements in the Earth-Centered Inertial Coordinate System is proposed. The modified iterated extended Kalman filter (MIEKF), with a new maximum likelihood iteration termination criterion, is used to generate the proposal distribution of the MIEKPF. Moreover, a new measurement update equation of the MIEKF is derived by modifying the objective function of the Gauss--Newton iteration. The approximated second-order linearized state propagation equation, Jacobian matrix of state transfer, and measurement equations are derived in satellite 2-body movement. The …

The Development Of A Hardware- And Software-Based Simulation Platform For The Training Of Driver Candidates, Abdullah Çavuşoğlu, İsmai̇l Kurnaz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a traffic simulation system (TSS) to provide novice driver candidates with opportunities for training and testing has been developed. Autonomous vehicles that follow the flow of traffic in a microsimulation environment were prepared using a hierarchical concurrent state machine. Autonomous vehicles are skilled and have behavioral aspects such as tracking the lanes, following the vehicles, complying with traffic rules, decelerating, accelerating, and intersection crossings. These driver behaviors are parameterized to allow the autonomous agents to act while disregarding the rules (i.e. aggressive behaviors) or behaving normally. The TSS is operated in 3 different modes, namely the orientation, …

Orthogonal Array Based Performance Improvement In The Gravitational Search Algorithm, Ökkeş Tolga Altinöz, Asim Egemen Yilmaz, Gerhard Wilhelm Weber Jan 2013

Orthogonal Array Based Performance Improvement In The Gravitational Search Algorithm, Ökkeş Tolga Altinöz, Asim Egemen Yilmaz, Gerhard Wilhelm Weber

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The gravitational search algorithm (GSA) is a novel heuristic method inspired by Newton's gravity and velocity equations. In addition, it is a population-based algorithm, in which each member (called an agent) in the population has a mass, velocity, and acceleration. Beginning with the first population state, agents influence each other via mass and velocity relations. This mutual effect causes agents to reach the optimum. Hence, the performance of the GSA to attain the optimum is related to the initial population formation, like other population-based algorithms. In this study, the orthogonal array (OA) concept is applied and injected to the GSA …

A New Technique For Rare-Event Simulation Based On Partition Of The Region, Amir Jalaly Bidgoly, Mohammad Abdollahi Azgomi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Rare events are an important limitation of discrete-event simulation in some areas of applications. The existing rare-event simulation (RES) techniques, such as importance sampling (IS), splitting, and RESTART, have been used for RES so far. However, these techniques not only have some limitations, but also are not general or easy to use. In this paper, the partition of the region (PoR) method is used as a variance reduction technique in a new RES technique for usage with a wide range of modeling and simulation languages. Three variants of the proposed technique will be introduced: simple PoR, recursive PoR, and advanced …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, the S-transform is used to discriminate between the internal disturbances and external faults of transformers. The proposed algorithm consists of 2 stages. The internal disturbances and the external faults are distinguished in the first stage. Next, the S-transform is applied to differential currents of faulty phases and the absolute deviation of the S-matrix is calculated. The relay scheme issues a trip signal in the case of an internal fault, according to the absolute deviation of the S-matrix. The scheme is implemented in a MATLAB environment and the inputs are differential currents, derived from EMTP software. In order …

An Improved Hybrid Approach For The Plc-Based Implementation Of Reduced Rw Supervisors, Murat Uzam, Gökhan Gelen Jan 2013

An Improved Hybrid Approach For The Plc-Based Implementation Of Reduced Rw Supervisors, Murat Uzam, Gökhan Gelen

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A successful application of a hybrid (mixed Petri net/automaton) approach for the real-time supervisory control of an experimental manufacturing system was reported recently. The hybrid approach includes a Ramadge--Wonham (RW) supervisor in the form of an automaton. The reduced RW supervisor offers fewer states for the programmable logic controller (PLC) implementation of the hybrid controller with less memory requirements, but due to a problem called the avalanche effect, the PLC implementation of the hybrid controller with the reduced RW supervisor was not possible. This paper proposes a method to both detect and eliminate the avalanche effect problem for a RW …

Stability Analysis Of Time-Delayed Dc Motor Speed Control System, Saffet Ayasun Jan 2013

Stability Analysis Of Time-Delayed Dc Motor Speed Control System, Saffet Ayasun

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, the stability of time-delayed DC motor speed control systems is analyzed. The measurement devices and communication links used by networked control systems, cause a significant amount of time delays. The stability boundary of the system in terms of the time delay is theoretically determined and an expression is obtained to compute the delay margin in terms of system parameters. The delay margin is defined as the maximum amount of time delay for which the DC motor speed control system is marginally stable. The results indicate that the system becomes unstable if the time delay exceeds the delay …

Preprocessing tools and further optimizations were developed to increase the performance of the algorithm. As a demonstrative case study, the developed algorithm is applied to the analysis of CE data from a selective 2'-hydroxyl acylation analyzed by primer extension (SHAPE) evaluation of the RNA secondary structure. The time-shift problem …

A New Morse Code Scheme Optimized According To The Statistical Properties Of Turkish, Emrah Çi̇çek, Asim Egemen Yilmaz Jan 2013

A New Morse Code Scheme Optimized According To The Statistical Properties Of Turkish, Emrah Çi̇çek, Asim Egemen Yilmaz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Morse code has been in use for more than 180 years, even though its currently known form is slightly different than the form defined by Morse and Vail. The code book constructed by Vail was optimized according to the statistical properties of English. In this study, we propose a new code book optimized for Turkish and demonstrate that it is information-theoretically possible to achieve about a 10% improvement throughout the coding of Turkish texts by means of our proposal. The outcomes of this might serve as a basis for potential (academic and/or applied) Turkish language-specific lossless data compression studies.

An Event-Driven Wsn Mac Protocol Design Based On Active Node And Dynamic Time Slot Allocation, Nükhet Sazak, İsmai̇l Ertürk, Etem Köklükaya, Murat Çakiroğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The unique features of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) make them suitable for a wide range of applications in many different areas. However, with many of the protocols and algorithms used in traditional wireless networks, it is usually neither feasible nor possible to apply them directly to WSNs due to the strict resource constraints of tiny sensor nodes. Moreover, application-specific approaches for communication protocols are usually imposed since WSN applications have distinct requirements. In this study, event-driven WSN applications, where a number of sensor nodes are randomly and densely deployed in remote and difficult to reach locations, are targeted. In such …
