Byzantine Fault Tolerant Coordination For Web Services Atomic Transactions, Wenbing Zhao Jan 2007

Byzantine Fault Tolerant Coordination For Web Services Atomic Transactions, Wenbing Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we present the mechanisms needed for Byzantine fault tolerant coordination of Web services atomic transactions. The mechanisms have been incorporated into an open-source framework implementing the standard Web services atomic transactions specification. The core services of the framework, namely, the activation service, the registration service, the completion service, and the distributed commit service, are replicated and protected with our Byzantine fault tolerance mechanisms. Such a framework can be useful for many transactional Web services that require high degree of security and dependability.

Load Distribution And Channel Assignment In Ieee 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks, Mohamad Haidar Jan 2007

Load Distribution And Channel Assignment In Ieee 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks, Mohamad Haidar

Theses and Dissertations

Recent growth in Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) deployment has generated considerable interest in load management and channel assignment among network designers. WLAN has become a major component of the modern telecommunication infrastructure. Load management and Channel assignment are among the critical aspects that face WLAN deployments. Well planned WLAN service environments require a network designed to provide not only radio coverage but also better load distribution and less interference across the service area, which in turn improves the Quality of Service (QoS). In this dissertation, a novel approach to the WLAN load distribution and channel assignment is proposed that …

Pi-Calculus In Logical Form, Marcello M. Bonsangue, Alexander Kurz Jan 2007

Pi-Calculus In Logical Form, Marcello M. Bonsangue, Alexander Kurz

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Abramsky’s logical formulation of domain theory is extended to encompass the domain theoretic model for picalculus processes of Stark and of Fiore, Moggi and Sangiorgi. This is done by defining a logical counterpart of categorical constructions including dynamic name allocation and name exponentiation, and showing that they are dual to standard constructs in functor categories. We show that initial algebras of functors defined in terms of these constructs give rise to a logic that is sound, complete, and characterises bisimilarity. The approach is modular, and we apply it to derive a logical formulation of pi-calculus. The resulting logic is a …

Performance Evaluation Of Java Web Services: A Developer's Perspective, Je-Loon Yang

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With the rapid growth of traffic on the internet, further development of the web technology upon which it is based becomes extremely important. For the evolvement of Web 2.0, web services are essential. Web services are programs that allow different computer platforms to communicate interactively across the web, without the need for extra data for interfaces and formats, such as webpage structures. Since web services are a future trend for the growth of the internet, the tools used for their development are also important. Although there are many choices of web service frameworks to choose from, developers should choose the …

Making Molehills Out Of Mountains: Bringing Security Research To The Classroom, Richard G. Taylor Jan 2007

Making Molehills Out Of Mountains: Bringing Security Research To The Classroom, Richard G. Taylor

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Security research published in academic journals rarely finds its way to the business community or into the classroom. Even though the research is of high quality, it is written in a manner that is difficult to read and to understand. This paper argues that one way to get this academic research into the business community is to incorporate it into security classrooms. To do so, however, academic articles need to be adapted into a classroom-friendly format. This paper suggests ways to do this and provides an example of an academic article that was adapted for use in a security management …

The Common Body Of Knowledge: A Framework To Promote Relevant Information Security Research, Kenneth J. Knapp, F. N. Ford, Thomas E. Marshall, R. K. Rainer

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

This study proposes using an established common body of knowledge (CBK) as one means of organizing information security literature. Consistent with calls for more relevant information systems (IS) research, this industrydeveloped framework can motivate future research towards topics that are important to the security practitioner. In this review, forty-eight articles from ten IS journals from 1995 to 2004 are selected and cross-referenced to the ten domains of the information security CBK. Further, we distinguish articles as empirical research, frameworks, or tutorials. Generally, this study identified a need for additional empirical research in every CBK domain including topics related to legal …

Investigating Information Structure Of Phishing Emails Based On Persuasive Communication Perspective, Ki J. Lee, Il-Yeol Song Jan 2007

Investigating Information Structure Of Phishing Emails Based On Persuasive Communication Perspective, Ki J. Lee, Il-Yeol Song

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Current approaches of phishing filters depend on classifying messages based on textually discernable features such as IP-based URLs or domain names as those features that can be easily extracted from a given phishing message. However, in the same sense, those easily perceptible features can be easily manipulated by sophisticated phishers. Therefore, it is important that universal patterns of phishing messages should be identified for feature extraction to serve as a basis for text classification. In this paper, we demonstrate that user perception regarding phishing message can be identified in central and peripheral routes of information processing. We also present a …

The Design And Implementation Of An Automated Security Compliance Toolkit: A Pedagogical Exercise, Guillermo Francia, Brian Estes, Rahjima Francia, Vu Nguyen, Alex Scroggins Jan 2007

The Design And Implementation Of An Automated Security Compliance Toolkit: A Pedagogical Exercise, Guillermo Francia, Brian Estes, Rahjima Francia, Vu Nguyen, Alex Scroggins

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The demand, through government regulations, for the preservation of the security, integrity, and privacy of corporate and customer information is increasing at an unprecedented pace. Government and private entities struggle to comply with these regulations through various means—both automated and manual controls. This paper presents an automated security compliance toolkit that is designed and developed using mostly open source tools to demonstrate that 1) meeting regulatory compliance does not need to be a very expensive proposition and 2) an undertaking of this magnitude could be served as a pedagogical exercise for students in the areas of collaboration, project management, software …

An Exploratory Analysis Of Computer Mediated Communications On Cyberstalking Severity, Stephen D. Barnes, David P. Biros Jan 2007

An Exploratory Analysis Of Computer Mediated Communications On Cyberstalking Severity, Stephen D. Barnes, David P. Biros

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The interaction between disjunctive interpersonal relationships, those where the parties to the relationship disagree on the goals of the relationship, and the use of computer mediated communications channels is a relatively unexplored domain. Bargh (2002) suggests that CMC channels can amplify the development of interpersonal relationships, and notes that the effect is not constant across communications activities. This proposal suggests a line of research that explores the interaction between computer mediated communications (CMC) and stalking, which is a common form of disjunctive relationships. Field data from cyberstalking cases will be used to look at the effects of CMC channels on …

Gigabit Concept Mining: A Sensitivity Analysis, Masters Thesis, December 2006, Andrew Levine Jan 2007

Gigabit Concept Mining: A Sensitivity Analysis, Masters Thesis, December 2006, Andrew Levine

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Massive amounts of data are passed over public networks. There is a need for network administrators to analyze this traffic, but it was not previously possible to analyze live network data at high speed. It has been shown that streaming computation and deep packet analysis are possible at very high rates through the use of hardware acceleration. This work provides analysis for a larger project that involves digesting large amounts of network traffic. In this system, we process the traffic using hardware that has constraints. The workings of the system are first discussed. Tradeoffs in the design of hardware and …

Leveraging Est Evidence To Automatically Predict Alternatively Spliced Genes, Master's Thesis, December 2006, Robert Zimmermann Jan 2007

Leveraging Est Evidence To Automatically Predict Alternatively Spliced Genes, Master's Thesis, December 2006, Robert Zimmermann

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Current methods for high-throughput automatic annotation of newly sequenced genomes are largely limited to tools which predict only one transcript per gene locus. Evidence suggests that 20-50% of genes in higher eukariotic organisms are alternatively spliced. This leaves the remainder of the transcripts to be annotated by hand, an expensive time-consuming process. Genomes are being sequenced at a much higher rate than they can be annotated. We present three methods for using the alignments of inexpensive Expressed Sequence Tags in combination with HMM-based gene prediction with N-SCAN EST to recreate the vast majority of hand annotations in the D.melanogaster genome. …

The Effect Of Object Color On Depth Ordering, Reynold Bailey, Cindy Grimm, Christopher Davoli, Richard Abrams Jan 2007

The Effect Of Object Color On Depth Ordering, Reynold Bailey, Cindy Grimm, Christopher Davoli, Richard Abrams

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The relationship between color and perceived depth for realistic, colored objects with varying shading was explored. Background: Studies have shown that warm-colored stimuli tend to appear nearer in depth than cool-colored stimuli. The majority of these studies asked human observers to view physically equidistant, colored stimuli and compare them for relative depth. However, in most cases, the stimuli presented were rather simple: straight colored lines, uniform color patches, point light sources, or symmetrical objects with uniform shading. Additionally, the colors were typically highly saturated. Although such stimuli are useful for isolating and studying depth cues in certain contexts, they leave …

Control Of A Robotic Arm Using Low-Dimensional Emg And Ecog Biofeedback, Timothy M. Blackely, William D. Smart Jan 2007

Control Of A Robotic Arm Using Low-Dimensional Emg And Ecog Biofeedback, Timothy M. Blackely, William D. Smart

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

In this dissertation we describe a system that uses a low dimensional input derived from electromyography and electrocorticography data to control a robot. The work involves creating a system that allows signals recorded directly from a human body to allow control of a small robot arm. We compare direct joystick control with electromyogram (EMG) input to determine if one input system is superior, or if the quality of control between them is comparable. We also verify the system that is used to record the electromyogram signals is adaptable to other forms of biosignal input; in particular, direct connection to a …

Splice: A Standardized Peripheral Logic And Interface Creation Engine, Master's Thesis, May 2007, Justin Thiel

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Recent advancements in FPGA technology have allowed manufacturers to place general-purpose processors alongside user-configurable logic gates on a single chip. At first glance, these integrated devices would seem to be the ideal deployment platform for hardware-software co-designed systems, but some issues, such as incompatibility across vendors and confusion over which bus interfaces to support, have impeded adoption of these platforms. This thesis describes the design and operation of Splice, a software-based code generation tool intended to address these types of issues by providing a bus-independent structure that allows end-users to easily integrate their customized peripheral logic into embedded systems. To …

Experimental Evaluation Of A Coarse-Grained Switch Scheduler, Charlie Wiseman, Jon Turner, Ken Wong, Brandon Heller Jan 2007

Experimental Evaluation Of A Coarse-Grained Switch Scheduler, Charlie Wiseman, Jon Turner, Ken Wong, Brandon Heller

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Modern high performance routers rely on sophisticated interconnection networks to meet ever increasing demands on capacity. Regulating the flow of packets through these interconnects is critical to providing good performance, particularly in the presence of extreme traffic patterns that result in sustained overload at output ports. Previous studies have used a combination of analysis and idealized simulations to show that coarse-grained scheduling of traffic flows can be effective in preventing congestion, while ensuring high utilization. In this paper, we study the performance of a coarse-grained scheduler in a real router with a scalable architecture similar to those found in high …

A Variable Gain Pi Controller Used For Speed Control Of A Direct Torque Neuro Fuzzy Controlled Induction Machine Drive, A. Miloudi, Eid A. Al-Radadi, Azeddine Draou

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents an original variable gain PI (VGPI) controller for speed control of a direct torque neuro fuzzy controlled (DTNFC) induction motor drive. First, a VGPI speed controller is designed to replace the classical PI controller in a conventional direct torque controlled induction motor drive. Its simulated performances are then compared to those of a classical PI controller. Then, a direct torque neuro fuzzy control (DTNFC) for a voltage source PWM inverter fed induction motor drive is presented. This control scheme uses the stator flux amplitude and the electromagnetic torque errors through an adaptive NF inference system (ANFIS) to …

Analysis Of Finline Structures With Consideration Of Metallization Thickness And Substrate Mounting Grooves, Abderrahmane Ouadi, Hadj Bourdoucen

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, mathematical analysis and numerical calculations of main parameters of finline structures with finite metallization thickness and substrate mounting grooves are developed based on the Method of Lines (MoL). The results obtained provide confirmation of the validity of the technique used and prove its simplicity and adequacy for treating different types of planar structures mainly finline based structures. Unilateral and bilateral finlines including practical parameters, such as metallization thickness and grooves' depths, have been investigated. The effect of these two parameters have been discussed based on realistic configurations and the results show that, at higher frequencies, the grooves …

New Method For Investigation Of Dynamic Parameters Of Thermoelectric Modules, Raşi̇t Ahiska Jan 2007

New Method For Investigation Of Dynamic Parameters Of Thermoelectric Modules, Raşi̇t Ahiska

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Precise calculation of parameters of thermoelectric modules and thermoelectric devices under operating conditions by present methods is very difficult. In this study, a new method is developed to calculate all parameters of thermoelectric modules. This new method makes it possible to determine the dynamic parameters of a real thermoelectric module operated under different working regimes. Measurement of thermoemf created by an operating module is the basis of this new method. An unloaded thermoelectric module, whose dynamic output parameters are necessary in the design of a medical helmet for the cooling of brain, has been investigated using this new method. A …

Data Mining And Costas Arrays, Konstantinos Drakakis Jan 2007

Data Mining And Costas Arrays, Konstantinos Drakakis

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Costas arrays are used in RADAR (and SONAR) engineering to represent frequency-hopping patterns that optimize the RADAR's performance. In this work, using all available Costas arrays up to and including order 26, as well as data mining techniques, we investigate how the Costas property and the balance of signs in the difference triangle of a permutation are related. Our conclusion is that there is sufficient evidence to believe that the mechanism responsible for the formation of Costas arrays changes from low to high orders.

Offline Signature Verification Using Graph Matching, Ibrahim S. I. Abuhaiba Jan 2007

Offline Signature Verification Using Graph Matching, Ibrahim S. I. Abuhaiba

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we present a simple and effective signature verification method that depends only on the raw binary pixel intensities and avoids using complex sets of features. The method looks at the signature verification problem as a graph matching problem. The method is tested using genuine and forgery signatures produced by five subjects. An equal error rate of 26.7% and 5.6% was achieved for skilled and random forgeries, respectively. A positive property of our algorithm is that the false acceptance rate of random forgeries vanishes at the point of equal false rejection and skilled forgery false acceptance rates. Keeping …

Umts-Hsdpa In High Altitude Platforms (Haps) Communications, Bazil Taha Ahmed, Miguel Calvo Ramon, Leandro De Haro-Ariet

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, the performance of HAPs (High Altitudes Platforms) UMTS HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) is studied for different HAPs height h, different cells radius R and two directions (0° and 30°) within the cell. The network under study is assumed to have 61 ground cells. It is noticed that, for urban zone users, the effective range is lower than the effective range for users in rural zones for a given modulation scheme. Also it is noticed that in rural zone, the HSDPA can support higher modulation schemes. It is noticed that, when 80% of the base station …

A Review Of Studies In Swarm Robotics, Levent Bayindir, Erol Şahi̇n Jan 2007

A Review Of Studies In Swarm Robotics, Levent Bayindir, Erol Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Swarm robotics is a new approach to the coordination of large numbers of relatively simple robots. The approach takes its inspiration from the system-level functioning of social insects which demonstrate three desired characteristics for multi-robot systems: robustness, flexibility and scalability. In this paper we have presented a preliminary taxonomy for swarm robotics and classified existing studies into this taxonomy after investigating the existing surveys related to swarm robotics literature. Our parent taxonomic units are modeling, behavior design, communication, analytical studies and problems. We are classifying existing studies into these main axes. Since existing reviews do not have enough number of …

Aggregation, Foraging, And Formation Control Of Swarms With Non-Holonomic Agents Using Potential Functions And Sliding Mode Techniques, Veysel Gazi̇, Bariş Fi̇dan, Y. Si̇nan Hanay, İlter Köksal Jan 2007

Aggregation, Foraging, And Formation Control Of Swarms With Non-Holonomic Agents Using Potential Functions And Sliding Mode Techniques, Veysel Gazi̇, Bariş Fi̇dan, Y. Si̇nan Hanay, İlter Köksal

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this article we consider the aggregation, foraging, and formation control of swarms whose agents are moving in 2-dimensions with non-holonomic unicycle agent dynamics. We approach these problems using artificial potentials and sliding mode control. The main contribution is extension of the recent results (mainly for aggregation) in the literature based on a similar approach for simple integrator agent dynamics models to a significantly more realistic and more difficult setting with non-holonomic unicycle agent dynamics models. In particular, we design continuous-time control schemes via a constructive analysis based on artificial potential functions and sliding mode control techniques. The effectiveness of …

Aggregation In Swarm Robotic Systems: Evolution And Probabilistic Control, Onur Soysal, Erki̇n Bahçeci̇, Erol Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study we investigate two approachees for aggregation behavior in swarm robotics systems: Evolutionary methods and probabilistic control. In first part, aggregation behavior is chosen as a case, where performance and scalability of aggregation behaviors of perceptron controllers that are evolved for a simulated swarm robotic system are systematically studied with different parameter settings. Using a cluster of computers to run simulations in parallel, four experiments are conducted varying some of the parameters. Rules of thumb are derived, which can be of guidance to the use of evolutionary methods to generate other swarm robotic behaviors as well. In the …
