A User Interactive Calibration Program For An Object Tracking System Using A Triaxial Accelerometer, Richard A. Elliott

HIM 1990-2015

A major method in object tracking systems and other inertial measurement devices resolves around the use of one, two, or three axis accelerometers. A leader in the field such devices is Microstrain Incorporated. They have developed a three axis accelerometer that uses a three axis magnetic sensor array to compute the pitch, roll, and yaw of a compact inertial measurement unit. In researching such devices, it became apparent that data collected using such units is extremely sensitive both to local magnetic fields and human interactions with the devices. It is therefore of great importance to ensure the device or devices …

Collaborative Context-Based Reasoning, Gilbert Barrett Jan 2007

Collaborative Context-Based Reasoning, Gilbert Barrett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores modeling collaborative behavior, based on Joint Intentions Theory (JIT), in Context-Based Reasoning (CxBR). Context-Based Reasoning is one of several contextual reasoning paradigms. And, Joint Intentions Theory is the definitive semantic framework for collaborative behaviors. In order to formalize collaborative behaviors in CxBR based on JIT, CxBR is first described in terms of the more popular Belief, Desire, and Intention (BDI) model. Once this description is established JIT is used as a basis for the formalism for collaborative behavior in CxBR. The hypothesis of this dissertation is that this formalism allows for effective collaborative behaviors in CxBR. Additionally, …

Congestion Avoidance And Fairness In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mohammad Ahmad Jan 2007

Congestion Avoidance And Fairness In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mohammad Ahmad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sensor network congestion avoidance and control primarily aims to reduce packet drops while maintaining fair bandwidth allocation to existing network flows. The design of a congestion control algorithm suited for all types of applications in sensor networks is a challenging task due to the application-specific nature of these networks. With numerous sensors transmitting data simultaneously to one or more base stations (also called sinks), sensor nodes located near the base station will most likely experience congestion and packet loss. In this thesis, we propose a novel distributed congestion avoidance algorithm which calculates the ratio of the number of downstream and …

Whole Genome Duplications And Contracted Breakpoint Graphs, Max A. Alekseyev, Pavel A. Pevzner Jan 2007

Whole Genome Duplications And Contracted Breakpoint Graphs, Max A. Alekseyev, Pavel A. Pevzner

Faculty Publications

The genome halving problem, motivated by the whole genome duplication events in molecular evolution, was solved by El-Mabrouk and Sankoff in the pioneering paper [SIAM J. Comput., 32 (2003), pp. 754–792]. The El-Mabrouk–Sankoff algorithm is rather complex, inspiring a quest for a simpler solution. An alternative approach to the genome halving problem based on the notion of the contracted breakpoint graph was recently proposed in [M. A. Alekseyev and P. A. Pevzner, IEEE/ACM Trans. Comput. Biol. Bioinformatics, 4 (2007), pp. 98–107]. This new technique reveals that while the El-Mabrouk–Sankoff result is correct in most cases, it does not hold in …

Colored De Bruijn Graphs And The Genome Halving Problem, Max A. Alekseyev, Pavel A. Pevzner

Faculty Publications

Breakpoint graph analysis is a key algorithmic technique in studies of genome rearrangements. However, breakpoint graphs are defined only for genomes without duplicated genes, thus limiting their applications in rearrangement analysis. We discuss a connection between the breakpoint graphs and de Bruijn graphs that leads to a generalization of the notion of breakpoint graph for genomes with duplicated genes. We further use the generalized breakpoint graphs to study the Genome Halving Problem (first introduced and solved by Nadia El-Mabrouk and David Sankoff). The El-Mabrouk-Sankoff algorithm is rather complex, and, in this paper, we present an alternative approach that is based …

Masters Theses

"A spark ignition (SI) engine can be described by non-strict feedback nonlinear discrete-time system with the output dependent upon on the states in a nonlinear manner. The controller developed in this thesis utilizes the inherent universal approximation property of neural networks (NN) to simplify the design process and solve the non-causality problem inherent with traditional designs. It also exploits a long-term performance index called the strategic utility function to minimize and assist in updating of the NN weights; therefore, an optimal controller can be realized. Finally, through Lyapunov equations, the controller guarantees stability"--Abstract, page iv.
