Automated Random Testing To Detect Specification-Code Inconsistencies, Yoonsik Cheon Jan 2007

Automated Random Testing To Detect Specification-Code Inconsistencies, Yoonsik Cheon

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

An interface specification language such as JML provides a means to document precisely the behavior of program modules such as Java classes, and it is being adopted by industry. However, few practical tools exist for programmers to assure the correctness of their interface specifications. Nonetheless, the correctness of an interface specification is a prerequisite for the use of the specification, both as a precise API documentation and as a foundation for formal verification of and reasoning about the implementation. We propose automated random testing as a practical tool to assure the correctness of interface specifications. The key idea of our …

Towards Adding Probabilities And Correlations To Interval Computations, Daniel Berleant, Martine Ceberio, Gang Xiang, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2007

Towards Adding Probabilities And Correlations To Interval Computations, Daniel Berleant, Martine Ceberio, Gang Xiang, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The paper is a continuation of our previous work towards the use of probability information in interval computations. While in the previous work, bounds on the first order moments are taken into account, the contribution of this article is to deal with correlations. Specifically, in this paper, we develop a new method that takes into account both correlation among measured parameters and bounds on their expected values when doing interval computation.

The Mathematical Analysis Of T-Norms Is Logically Non-Trivial, Sandor Jenei, Vladik Kreinovich, David Ponevac, Yaffa Al Bayyari Jan 2007

The Mathematical Analysis Of T-Norms Is Logically Non-Trivial, Sandor Jenei, Vladik Kreinovich, David Ponevac, Yaffa Al Bayyari

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is well-known that t-norms are widely applicable in certain models, which describe human reasoning about uncertainty, and that for different applications, different t-norms fit better. Thus, given a practical problem, it is important to be able to find a t-norm which is the most suitable for that particular problem. To solve such optimization problems, it would be desirable to know the structure of the class of all possible t-norms. Toward this -- probably unreachable -- goal there are many interesting open problems. If the corresponding mathematical problems are expressed in terms of quantifiers and logical connectives, then we get …

Atmospheric Turbulence Compensation Of Point Source Images Using Asynchronous Stochastic Parallel Gradient Descent Technique On Amos 3.6 M Telescope, Mikhail Vorontsov, Jim F. Riker, Gary W. Carhart, Venkata S. Rao Gudimetla, Leonid A. Beresnev, Thomas Weyrauch Jan 2007

Atmospheric Turbulence Compensation Of Point Source Images Using Asynchronous Stochastic Parallel Gradient Descent Technique On Amos 3.6 M Telescope, Mikhail Vorontsov, Jim F. Riker, Gary W. Carhart, Venkata S. Rao Gudimetla, Leonid A. Beresnev, Thomas Weyrauch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The Stochastic Parallel Gradient Descent Technique-based Adaptive Optics (SPGD-AO) system described in this presentation does not use a conventional wavefront sensor. It uses a metric signal collected by a single pixel detector placed behind a pinhole in the image plane to drive three deformable mirrors (DMs). The system is designed to compensate the image for turbulence effects. The theory behind this method is described in detail in [1]. However this technique, while widely simulated and tested in the laboratory, was not yet verified in astronomical field site experiments. During the month of May 2007, a series of experiments with SPGD-AO …

User Security Behavior On Wireless Networks: An Empirical Study, Tim Chenoweth, Robert Minch, Sharon Tabor Jan 2007

User Security Behavior On Wireless Networks: An Empirical Study, Tim Chenoweth, Robert Minch, Sharon Tabor

IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming ubiquitous but are often insecure and leave users responsible for their own security. We empirically study whether users are successfully securing their client computers when using wireless networks. Automated techniques are used that scan users' machines after they associate with a university wireless network. This determines whether a firewall is being used and what TCP ports are open. Results show that over 9% of 3,331 unique computers scanned were not using a properly configured firewall. In addition, almost 9% had at least one TCP port open, with almost 6% having open ports with significant security …

Adaptive Optics Performance Over Long Horizontal Paths: Aperture Effects In Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optical Systems, Miao Yu, Mikhail Vorontsov, Svetlana Lachinova, Jim F. Riker, Venkata S. Rao Gudimetla Jan 2007

Adaptive Optics Performance Over Long Horizontal Paths: Aperture Effects In Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optical Systems, Miao Yu, Mikhail Vorontsov, Svetlana Lachinova, Jim F. Riker, Venkata S. Rao Gudimetla

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We analyze various scenarios of the aperture effects in adaptive optical receiver-type systems when inhomogeneities of the wave propagation medium are distributed over long horizontal propagation path, or localized in a few thin layers remotely located from the receiver telescope pupil. Phase aberration compensation is performed using closed-loop control architectures based on phase conjugation and decoupled stochastic parallel gradient descent (DSPGD) control algorithms. Both receiver system aperture diffraction effects and the impact of wave-front corrector position on phase aberration compensation efficiency are analyzed for adaptive systems with single or multiple wave-front correctors.

The field of Evolvable Hardware (EH) has recently gained a lot of interest due to the novel methodology it offers for designing electrical circuits and machines. EH techniques involve configuring a reconfigurable hardware platform with the aid of learning engines such as evolutionary algorithms. The EH devices normally act as closed loop controllers with the capability of learning necessary control laws adaptively. Current EH practices have several shortcomings, which have restricted their use as reliable controllers. This dissertation will present an improved EH device based on behavioral reconfigurability that addresses the current open challenges in the field of analog Evolvable …

Quasi-Orthogonal Space-Time-Frequency Codes In Mb-Ofdm Uwb Communications, L. C. Tran, A. Mertins, Tadeusz A. Wysocki

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

The paper examines the implementation of Quasi-Orthogonal Space-Time-Frequency Codes (QOSTFCs) to increase data rates and error performance in recently proposed STFC Multiband OFDM Ultra Wideband (MB-OFDM UWB) communications systems. It is shown that, an order-4 QOSTFC not only can provide the full rate, but also may provide significantly better error performance, compared to the conventional MB-OFDM (without STFCs), and considerably better error performance, compared to order-4, orthogonal STFC MBOFDM, without increasing the total transmission power.

A Map Estimator For Simultaneous Superresolution And Detector Nonunifomity Correct, Russell C. Hardie, Douglas R. Droege Jan 2007

A Map Estimator For Simultaneous Superresolution And Detector Nonunifomity Correct, Russell C. Hardie, Douglas R. Droege

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

During digital video acquisition, imagery may be degraded by a number of phenomena including undersampling, blur, and noise. Many systems, particularly those containing infrared focal plane array (FPA) sensors, are also subject to detector nonuniformity. Nonuniformity, or fixed pattern noise, results from nonuniform responsivity of the photodetectors that make up the FPA. Here we propose a maximuma posteriori (MAP) estimation framework for simultaneously addressing undersampling, linear blur, additive noise, and bias nonuniformity. In particular, we jointly estimate a superresolution (SR) image and detector bias nonuniformity parameters from a sequence of observed frames. This algorithm can be applied to video in …

Directflow: A Domain-Specific Language For Information-Flow Systems, Andrew P. Black, Chuan-Kai Lin Jan 2007

Directflow: A Domain-Specific Language For Information-Flow Systems, Andrew P. Black, Chuan-Kai Lin

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Programs that process streams of information are commonly built by assembling reusable information-flow components. In some systems the components must be chosen from a pre-defined set of primitives; in others the programmer can create new custom components using a general-purpose programming language. Neither approach is ideal: restricting programmers to a set of primitive components limits the expressivity of the system, while allowing programmers to define new components in a general-purpose language makes it difficult or impossible to reason about the composite system. We advocate defining information-flow components in a domain-specific language (DSL) that enables us to infer the properties of …

On Advanced Template-Based Interpretation As Applied To Intention Recognition In A Strategic Environment, Cameron Akridge Jan 2007

On Advanced Template-Based Interpretation As Applied To Intention Recognition In A Strategic Environment, Cameron Akridge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An area of study that has received much attention over the past few decades is simulations involving threat assessment in military scenarios. Recently, much research has emerged concerning the recognition of troop movements and formations in non-combat simulations. Additionally, there have been efforts towards the detection and assessment of various types of malicious intentions. One such work by Akridge addressed the issue of Strategic Intention Recognition, but fell short in the detection of tactics that it could not detect without somehow manipulating the environment. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to address the problem of recognizing an opponent's intent …

Design And Implementation Of A Hardware Level Content Networking Front End Device, Jeremy Layne Buboltz Jan 2007

Design And Implementation Of A Hardware Level Content Networking Front End Device, Jeremy Layne Buboltz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The bandwidth and speed of network connections are continually increasing. The speed increase in network technology is set to soon outpace the speed increase in CMOS technology. This asymmetrical growth is beginning to causing software applications that once worked with then current levels of network traffic to flounder under the new high data rates. Processes that were once executed in software now have to be executed, partially if not wholly in hardware. One such application that could benefit from hardware implementation is high layer routing. By allowing a network device to peer into higher layers of the OSI model, the …

Learning Human Behavior From Observation For Gaming Applications, Christopher Moriarty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The gaming industry has reached a point where improving graphics has only a small effect on how much a player will enjoy a game. One focus has turned to adding more humanlike characteristics into computer game agents. Machine learning techniques are being used scarcely in games, although they do offer powerful means for creating humanlike behaviors in agents. The first person shooter (FPS), Quake 2, is an open source game that offers a multi-agent environment to create game agents (bots) in. This work attempts to combine neural networks with a modeling paradigm known as context based reasoning (CxBR) to create …

An Economic Framework For Resource Management And Pricing In Wireless Networks With Competitive Service Providers, Shamik Sengupta Jan 2007

An Economic Framework For Resource Management And Pricing In Wireless Networks With Competitive Service Providers, Shamik Sengupta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A paradigm shift from static spectrum allocation to dynamic spectrum access (DSA) is becoming a reality due to the recent advances in cognitive radio, wide band spectrum sensing, and network aware real--time spectrum access. It is believed that DSA will allow wireless service providers (WSPs) the opportunity to dynamically access spectrum bands as and when they need it. Moreover, due to the presence of multiple WSPs in a region, it is anticipated that dynamic service pricing would be offered that will allow the end-users to move from long-term service contracts to more flexible short-term service models. In this research, we …

A Bayesian Multilevel Modeling Approach For Data Query In Wireless Sensor Networks, Honggang Wang, Hua Fang, Kimberly A. Espy, Dongming Peng, Hamid Sharif Jan 2007

A Bayesian Multilevel Modeling Approach For Data Query In Wireless Sensor Networks, Honggang Wang, Hua Fang, Kimberly A. Espy, Dongming Peng, Hamid Sharif

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

In power-limited Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), it is important to reduce the communication load in order to achieve energy savings. This paper applies a novel statistic method to estimate the parameters based on the real-time data measured by local sensors. Instead of transmitting large real-time data, we proposed to transmit the small amount of dynamic parameters by exploiting both temporal and spatial correlation within and between sensor clusters. The temporal correlation is built on the level-1 Bayesian model at each sensor to predict local readings. Each local sensor transmits their local parameters learned from historical measurement data to their cluster …

Evolvable Reconfigurable Hardware Framework For Edge Detection, Nader I. Rafla

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Systems on Reconfigurable Chips contain rich resources of logic, memory, and processor cores on the same fabric. This platform is suitable for implementation of Evolvable Reconfigurable Hardware Architectures (ERHA). It is based on the idea of combining reconfigurable Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) along with genetic algorithms (GA) to perform the reconfiguration operation. This architecture is a suitable candidate for implementation of early-processing stage operators of image processing such as filtering and edge detection. However, there are still fundamental issues need to be solved regarding the on-chip reprogramming of the logic. This paper presents a framework for implementing an evolvable …

An Ad Hoc Adaptive Hashing Technique For Non-Uniformly Distributed Ip Address Lookup In Computer Networks, Christopher Martinez, Wei-Ming Lin Jan 2007

An Ad Hoc Adaptive Hashing Technique For Non-Uniformly Distributed Ip Address Lookup In Computer Networks, Christopher Martinez, Wei-Ming Lin

Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Hashing algorithms have been widely adopted for fast address look-up, which involves a search through a database to find a record associated with a given key. Hashing algorithms transforms a key into a hash value hoping that the hashing renders the database a uniform distribution with respect to the hash value. The closer to uniform hash values, the less search time required for a query. When the database is key-wise uniformly distributed, any regular hashing algorithm (bit-extraction, bit-group XOR, etc.) leads to a statistically perfect uniform hash distribution. When the database has keys with a non-uniform distribution, performance of regular …

Providing A Foundation For Analysis Of Volatile Data Stores, Timothy Vidas Jan 2007

Providing A Foundation For Analysis Of Volatile Data Stores, Timothy Vidas

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Current threats against typical computer systems demonstrate a need for forensic analysis of memory-resident data in addition to the conventional static analysis common today. Certain attacks and types of malware exist solely in memory and leave little or no evidentiary information on nonvolatile stores such as a hard disk drive. The desire to preserve system state at the time of response may even warrant memory acquisition independent of perceived threats and the ability to analyze the acquired duplicate.

Tools capable of duplicating various types of volatile data stores are becoming widely available. Once the data store has been duplicated, current …

A New Relaying Algorithm To Detect Loss Of Excitation Of Synchronous Generators, Ömer Usta, M. H. Musa, M. Bayrak, M.A. Redfern Jan 2007

A New Relaying Algorithm To Detect Loss Of Excitation Of Synchronous Generators, Ömer Usta, M. H. Musa, M. Bayrak, M.A. Redfern

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A new digital relaying algorithm is introduced for the protection of synchronous generators against loss of excitation conditions. The new algorithm is based on measuring of the 3-phase reactive power output of the machines, and monitors the direction and magnitude of leading reactive power at the generator terminal. The protection algorithm is designed such that it can provide reliable protection against loss of field conditions and remains stable during recoverable power system swing conditions. While the new relay produces a trip signal for partial loss of field conditions causing the machine to lose its stability, it remains stable for the …
