Metal matrix composite (N[MC) materials were manufactured using powder metallurgy (PM) techniques. Pure aluminum, Al, powder of mean particle size of 51 pm and alumina, AhO3, powder of 4 pm particle size were used as matrix and reinforcement, respectively. MNICs with four different weight fractions of reinforcement (e.g; Al-0wt.% AhO3, AI-2.5wt.% AhO3, Al-5wt.% AI2O3, and Al-1 0wt. %AhO3 ) were investigated The specimens were manufactured using hot compaction followed hot extrusion. The present trend is to be able to develop cheaper and more convenient methods to design and fabricate non volatile RAM that will lead to an alteration of the computer architecture itself This will help replace the DRAM, which the computers currently have in their memory. The proposed NVRAM is designed to overcome the common difficulties faced with the use of ferroelectric materials used in the fabrication of NVRAM. This thesis presents results of evaluating the communications capabilities of the generalized hypercube interconnection network. The generalized hypercube has outstanding topological properties, but it has not been implemented in a large scale because of its very high wiring complexity. For this reason, this network has not been studied extensively in the past. However, recent and expected technological advancements will soon render this network viable for massively parallel systems.
We first present implementations of randomized many-to-all broadcasting and multicasting on generalized hypercubes, using as the basis the one-to-all broadcast algorithm presented in [3]. We test the proposed implementations under realistic communication …

This research investigates a new display device - Beam Matrix Plasma Display Panel (BM PDP). The scan of a PDP in such a system is accomplished through two electrical-beam guns instead of semiconductor switches.
The BM-PDP eliminates the expensive semiconductor switches in the current plasma display device systems. Its drive circuit has only three parts: electron beam guns, resistors and capacitors. During the operation of BM PDP, first a switch cell is turned on by a selection gun (X gun). Then another electron gun (Y gun) emits electrons onto column electrodes and capacitors. Generalized Adaptive Neural Filters (GANF) are a class of adaptive non-linear filters. This thesis presents a hardware implementation of GANF. Two designs are considered: the single neuron implementation and the multi-neuron implementation. The GANF design includes the window generator, threshold decomposer, training and filtering unit. The designs are verified through a logic design/simulation tool, Logic Works.

PetaFLOPS computing power is the newest goal of Federal Government agencies, in the increasingly active supercomputer field. To obtain this performance goal by the year 2007, sophisticated parallel processing designs are required. To effectively create network interfaces/routers for interprocessor communications in such computer systems, it requires optimal hardware and software codesigns.
An interface is presented for the NJIT New Millennium Computing Point Design, a system that targets 100 TeraFLOPS performance by the year 2005. The router handles store-and-forward switching and wormhole routing for the system.

Disclosed is an electromagnetic beam directing means for use with sample analysis systems, such as reflectometers, ellipsometers and polarimeters and the like, use of which facilitates investigation of sample systems which are not mounted to a sample analysis system sample system supporting stage. Different web search tools often complement each other. So, if we want to have a good coverage of all relevant web items, a reasonable strategy is to use different search tools and then merge the resulting lists. How to merge them? In this paper, we describe reasonable axioms for the merging procedure and describe all mergings that satisfy these reasonable axioms.

Fuzzy logic-based clustering techniques are widely used in situations where statistical assumptions are not valid. Whether in estimating cluster centers for model identification purposes or in determining clusters the existing techniques are essentially based upon the choice of some potential functions. As in any design problems of this kind, the choice of such a function has to be justified on a theoretical basis. In this work, we set up a decision frame work and show that optimal potential functions are the ones which are used in current techniques.

Experiments have shown that we can only memorize images up to a certain complexity level, after which, instead of memorizing the image itself, we, sort of, memorize a probability distribution in terms of which this image is "random" (in the intuitive sense of this word), and next time, we reproduce a "random" sample from this distribution. This random sample may be different from the original image, but since it belongs to the same distribution, it, hopefully, correctly reproduces the statistical characteristics of the original image.

Programs routinely use complicated pointer (linked list-type) data structures such as linked lists, doubly linked lists, different types of trees, etc. These data structures are usually defined {\it inductively}: e.g., a tree can be defined as a structure that results from an empty tree by an arbitrary sequence of adding and deleting elements.
When the program runs, these data structures take dynamically changing shapes. To test program correctness, it is important to check, at run-time, whether a current shape is a correct implementation of the corresponding structure. The difficulty of handling out-of-core data limits the performance of supercomputers as well as the potential of the parallel machines. Since writing an efficient out-of-core version of a program is a difficult task and virtual memory systems do not perform well on scientific computations, we believe that there is a clear need for compiler directed explicit I/O approach for out-of-core computations. In this paper, we first present an out-of-core compilation strategy based on a disk storage abstraction. This paper aims to improve locality of references by suitably choosing array layouts. We use a new definition of spatial reuse vectors that takes into account memory layout of arrays. This capability creates two opportunities. First, it allows us to develop an array restructuring framework based on a combination of hyperplane theory and reuse vectors. Second, it allows us to observe the effect of different array layout optimizations on spatial reuse vectors. Since the iteration space based locality optimizations also change the spatial reuse vectors, our approach allows us to compare the iteration-space based and data-space based approaches in terms …

One of the typical problems in engineering and scientific applications is as follows: we know the values x1,...,xn of some quantities, we are interested in the values of some other quantities y1,...,ym, and we know the relationships between xi, yj, and, maybe, some auxiliary physical quantities z1,...,zk. For example, we may know an algorithm to compute y2 from x_1, x3, and y1; we may also know an equation F(x1,x2,y1)=0 that relates these values, etc. The question is: can we compute the values of yj, and, if we can, how to do it?

A method and apparatus for in situ detection and concentration measurement of trace elements in an analysis Sample is disclosed. The invention uses laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) wherein femtosecond pulsed laser energy is employed to produce the plasma. The femtosecond pulsed laser energy is focused on the analysis Sample to produce the plasma and the resulting emission is delivered for spectral analysis. Because the method and apparatus of the present invention allow breakdown of the analysis Sample without propagation of energy to the Sample-air interface, a plasma is produced that consists essentially of Sample materials without being contaminated by …
