Two Complex Orthogonal Space-Time Codes For Eight Transmit Antennas, Le Chung Tran, J. Seberry, Yejing Wang, B. J. Wysocki, T. A. Wysocki, Tianbing Xia, Ying Zhao
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
Two new constructions of complex orthogonal space-time block codes of order 8 based on the theory of amicable orthogonal designs are presented and their performance compared with that of the standard code of order 8. These new codes are suitable for multi-modulation schemes where the performance can be sacrificed for a higher throughput.

The Effect Of Imperfect Carrier Recovery On The Performance Of The Diversity Antenna Selection Technique In Wireless Channels Utilizing Dstm, Le Chug Tran, Tadeusz Wysocki, Jennifer Seberry, Alfred Mertins
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
his paper examines the effect of imperfect carrier phase/frequency recovery at the receiver on the bit error performance of our diversity antenna selection technique (AST) proposed for channels utilizing Differential Space-Time Modulation (DSTM). The tolerance of differential detection associated with the proposed AST to phase/frequency errors is then analyzed.
Space Time Spreading With Modified Walsh-Hadamard Sequences, P Vial, B. J. Wysocki, I Raad, Tadeusz Wysocki
Space Time Spreading With Modified Walsh-Hadamard Sequences, P Vial, B. J. Wysocki, I Raad, Tadeusz Wysocki
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
Previous work has shown that the performance of a Space Time Spreading (STS) system using walsh codes with two transmit antennas at the Base Station (BS) is degraded in the presence of mutual interference from adjacent sectors in the same cell. In this paper we use Modified Walsh-Hadamard sequences exhibiting improved cross-correlation performance, which potentially mitigates the effects of MA1 (Multiple Access Interference). The presented study also looks at variation of sets of different Modified Walsh- Hadamard codes being used by the adjacent interferer, with a hundred randomly selected pairings being chosen, as well as the case where one set …

Complex Orthogonal Sequences From Amicable Hadamard Matrices, L. C. Tran, J. Seberry, B. J. Wysocki, Tadeusz Wysocki, T. Xia, Ying Zhao
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
The paper deals with the novel technique of designing complex spreading sequences with only four phases (0.25π, 0.75π, 1.25π, 1.75π). The interesting feature of those new sequences is the fact that not only the complex sequences are orthogonal but the real parts and imaginary parts are independently orthogonal. This can be utilized for spreading of complex constellation signals where the independent spreading using bipolar sequences (real part for in-phase component and imaginary part for quadrature component) can be applied. The paper introduces the theoretical background, and some example constructions of the amicable …

Multi-Modulation Schemes To Increase The Rate Of Space-Time Block Codes In Rayleigh Fading Channels, Le Chung Tran, Tadeusz A. Wysocki, Jennifer Seberry, Alfred Mertins
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
he paper examines multi-modulation schemes (MMSs) to increase the rate of our two new Complex Orthogonal Designs (CODS) proposed for eight transmit antennas, namely C1 and C2, corresponding to the Amicable Orthogonal Designs (AODs) (~l,l,Z,Z:l,l,Z~) and (8:1,1,1,~1,1,1,4), respectively. In addition, the optimal inter-symbol power allocation in the proposed codes in single modulation as well BS in MMSs in flat Rayleigh fading channels is considered. It turns out that, in some modulation schemes, equal power transmission pure each symbol time slot is not only optimal from the technical point of view, but also optimal in terms of achieving …

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
In higher education professors often make much effort to introduce their students to research. Unfortunately, the present standard database systems curriculum is composed of well-settled subjects that do not lead to research. The challenge is to bring the research frontier closer to students at beginner level. In this paper we describe how it can be done in the area of spatiotemporal databases. We propose a new database systems curriculum and illustrate its benefits by mentioning several highly succsesful student projects in some recent experimental introductory database systems courses that followed the new curriculum.
Experimental Evaluation Of Constraint Automata Solutions To The Genome Map Assembly Problem, Viswanathan Ramanathan
Experimental Evaluation Of Constraint Automata Solutions To The Genome Map Assembly Problem, Viswanathan Ramanathan
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
DNA sequences are really huge having a length of around 3-4 million base pairs. Hence, each DNA sequence has to be cut down into small fragments using restriction enzymes. Once analyzed, these fragments have to be arranged or assembled into a single set of sequences called a genome map, to obtain the original DNA sequence. This problem is called the Genome Map Assembly Problem. A Constraint-Automata Solution was proposed for this purpose [11]. This thesis improves and implements the Constraint-Automata Solution to find all the possible solutions. The Modified Constraint-Automata Solution was implemented in Perl and executed on parts of …
Constraint Datalog In Trust Management, Scot Anderson
Constraint Datalog In Trust Management, Scot Anderson
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Constraint Datalog holds an increasing role in Trust Management. We discuss several Trust Management systems and give a description of the environment and requirements for Trust Management. Constraint Datalog using addition constraints and approximation theory provides an expressive semantic with which to describe security policies for credentials, delegations and authorizations. Approximation theory allows halting in Constraint Datalog over addition constraints. We use the decision problem of Diophantine equations to show that Constraint Datalog over addition constraints is complete. Combining these two concepts provides an approximately complete, safe language. The problem of constant additions to closed languages provides reasons for using …

Vector Dissipativity Theory For Discrete-Time Large-Scale Nonlinear Dynamical Systems, Wassim M. Haddad, Qing Hui, Vijaysekhar Chellaboina, Sergey Nersesov
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
In analyzing large-scale systems, it is often desirable to treat the overall system as a collection of interconnected subsystems. Solution properties of the large-scale system are then deduced from the solution properties of the individual subsystems and the nature of the system interconnections. In this paper, we develop an analysis framework for discrete-time large-scale dynamical systems based on vector dissipativity notions. Specifically, using vector storage functions and vector supply rates, dissipativity properties of the discrete-time composite large-scale system are shown to be determined from the dissipativity properties of the subsystems and their interconnections. In particular, extended Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov conditions, in terms …

User Interface Improvement For Mlpq System, Shasha Wu
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis describes the experience of migrating the MLPQ constraint database system, a complex standalone Multiple Document Interface (MDI) application, to a server-based remote accessible application. Centralized, standalone MDI application is a common style for personal software products in Windows. For a database management system, server-based, thin-client computing is a more popular infrastructure. Migrating an existing standalone constraint database application to be a web accessible constraint database server is the main goal of this thesis. This migration process provides a method for the constraint database system to collaborate with other specific applications. We rebuild the desktop MLPQ constraint database system …

A Performance Study Of Dynamic Zone Topology Routing Protocol, Mehran Abolhasan, Tadeusz A. Wysocki
A Performance Study Of Dynamic Zone Topology Routing Protocol, Mehran Abolhasan, Tadeusz A. Wysocki
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
In this paper we present a simulation study of a hybrid routing protocol we proposed in our previous work. Our hybrid routing strategy is called Dynamic Zone Topology Routing protocol (DZTR). This protocol has been designed to provide scalable routing in a Mobile Ad hoc Networking (MANET) environment. DZTR breaks the network into a number of zones by using a GPS. The topology of each zone is maintained proactively and the route to the nodes in other zones are determined reactively. DZTR proposes a number of different strategies to reduce routing overhead in large networks and reduce the single point …
Increasing Performance Of Sqrd Decoding For Lst Systems, Phillip Conder, Tadeusz A. Wysocki
Increasing Performance Of Sqrd Decoding For Lst Systems, Phillip Conder, Tadeusz A. Wysocki
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
A number of decoding schemes have been proposed for Layered Space-Time systems, such as the Ordered Successive Interference Cancellation and the Sorted QR Decomposition. We describe here a new addition to that group, increasing the performance of Layered Space-Time decoding by using the Sorted QR Decomposition technique to construct a list of constellations to be passed to a Maximum Likelihood decoder. This paper shows that signifcant performance improvement can be obtained for symmetric systems, where there is an equal number of transmit and receive antennas. It shows that the proposed scheme, has a roughly linear increase in complexity compared to …
On The Effect Of Adjacent Sector Multiple Access Interference On Space Time Spreading Systems, Peter Vial, Ibrahim Raad, Tadeusz A. Wysocki
On The Effect Of Adjacent Sector Multiple Access Interference On Space Time Spreading Systems, Peter Vial, Ibrahim Raad, Tadeusz A. Wysocki
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
Space Time Spreading systems are proposed as a method to enhance communications between the Base Station (BS) and Mobile Station (MS) by using multiple transmit antennas at the Base Station. This provides a form of transmit diversity when there are more than one transmitting antennas. Space Time Spreading systems have been shown to be efficient in their use of the limited number of orthogonal spreading sequences and to provide a diversity gain, which in the case of two transmitter antennas at the BS and one receiving antenna at the MS, is of order two. The paper looks at the effect …

Antenna Selection Scheme For Wireless Channels Utilizing Differential Space-Time Modulation, Le Chung Tran, Tadeusz A. Wysocki
Antenna Selection Scheme For Wireless Channels Utilizing Differential Space-Time Modulation, Le Chung Tran, Tadeusz A. Wysocki
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
In this paper, the authors prove that the differential space-time modulation techniques proposed in literature provide a full spatial diversity. Based on that, the authors propose an antenna selection scheme called general N-out-of-M antenna selection technique for wireless communications channels utilizing differential space-time modulation. The simulation shows that differential detection associated with our proposed technique provides much better bit error performance over that without antenna selection, and even over coherent detection without antenna selection at certain signal-to-noise ratios.
Displacement Based Route Update Strategies For Proactive Routing Protocols In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Mehran Abolhasan, Tadeusz Wysocki
Displacement Based Route Update Strategies For Proactive Routing Protocols In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Mehran Abolhasan, Tadeusz Wysocki
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
This paper presents a new route update strategy for performing proactive route discovery in Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs). In this strategy, the rate at which route updates are sent into the network is controlled by how often a node changes its location by a required distance. We refer to this updating strategy as Minimum Displacement Update Routing (MDUR). We implemented MDUR on top of the Fisheye State Routing (FSR) protocol and investigated its performance by simulation. The simulations where performed in a number of different scenarios, with varied network mobility, density, traffic and boundary. Our results indicate that MDUR …

Information Efficiency In Hyperspectral Imaging Systems, Stephen E. Reichenbach, Luyin Cao, Ram M. Narayanan
Information Efficiency In Hyperspectral Imaging Systems, Stephen E. Reichenbach, Luyin Cao, Ram M. Narayanan
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
In this work we develop a method for assessing the information density and efficiency of hyperspectral imaging systems that have spectral bands of non-uniform width. Imaging system designs with spectral bands of nonuniform width can efficiently gather information about a scene by allocating bandwidth among the bands according to their information content. The information efficiency is the ratio of information density to data density and is a function of the scene’s spectral radiance, hyperspectral system design, and signal-to-noise ratio. The assessment can be used to produce an efficient system design. For example, one approach to determining the number and width …
Nanostructures With Small- And Large-Scale Periodic And Random Rough Surfaces And Lateral Fluctuations In The Permittivity And Permeability-Scattered Near Fields, Ezekiel Bahar
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
The scattered electromagnetic near fields due to fluctuations in the surface height and/or lateral variations in the electromagnetic medium parameters are evaluated using a full-wave approach. Since the scales of the height and medium fluctuations considered could be significantly smaller or larger than the electromagnetic wavelengths, the familiar perturbation and physical/geometrical optics solutions cannot be used nor is it possible to investigate subwave length features based on far-field measurements. The full-wave approach employs complete field expansion that includes propagating and evanescent waves as well as lateral waves and surface waves, which are not accounted for in the perturbation and physical …
Cxquery: A Novel Xml Query Language, Peter Revesz, Yi Chen
Cxquery: A Novel Xml Query Language, Peter Revesz, Yi Chen
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
XML is becoming the data exchange standard on the Internet. Previously proposed XML query languages, such as XQuery, Quilt, YALT, Lorel, and XML-QL, lack schema definition of the query result; therefore, they are limited for defining views, integrating data, updating, and further querying, all of which are often needed in e-Business applications. We propose a novel XML query language called CXQuery, which defines the schema of the query results explicitly and can easily define views, and integrate, update, and query XML data. In addition, CXQuery can express spatial and spatio-temporal queries using a constraint-based querying approach.
Implementation And Validation Of Range Imaging On A Uhf Radar Wind Profiler, P. B. Chilson, Tian-You Yu, Richard G. Strauch, Andreas Muschinski, Robert D. Palmer
Implementation And Validation Of Range Imaging On A Uhf Radar Wind Profiler, P. B. Chilson, Tian-You Yu, Richard G. Strauch, Andreas Muschinski, Robert D. Palmer
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
The available range resolution of pulsed radar wind profilers is usually limited by bandwidth restrictions. Range imaging (RIM) has recently been developed as a means of mitigating these limitations by operating the wind profilers over a small set of distinct transmitter frequencies. A constrained optimization method can then be used to generate high-resolution maps of the reflectivity field as a function of range. This paper presents a description of how the RIM technique has been recently implemented on the Platteville 915-MHz tropospheric profiler, the first such implementation at UHF. Examples of data collected during a two-part experiment on 10 April …

Statistical Evaluation Of Image Quality Measures, Ismail Avcibas, Bulent Sankur, Khalid Sayood
Statistical Evaluation Of Image Quality Measures, Ismail Avcibas, Bulent Sankur, Khalid Sayood
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
In this work we comprehensively categorize image quality measures, extend measures defined for gray scale images to their multispectral case, and propose novel image quality measures. They are categorized into pixel difference-based, correlation-based, edge-based, spectral-based, context-based and human visual system (HVS)-based measures. Furthermore we compare these measures statistically for still image compression applications. The statistical behavior of the measures and their sensitivity to coding artifacts are investigated via analysis of variance techniques. Their similarities or differences are illustrated by plotting their Kohonen maps. Measures that give consistent scores across an image class and that are sensitive to coding artifacts are …
Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging Using A Coherent Ultrawideband Random Noise Radar System, Daryl C. Bell, Ram M. Narayanan
Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging Using A Coherent Ultrawideband Random Noise Radar System, Daryl C. Bell, Ram M. Narayanan
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has developed an ultrawideband random noise radar operating over the 1- to 2-GHz frequency range. The system uses the technique of heterodyne correlation, and is thus phase coherent. It has therefore been used in applications such as interferometry, polarimetry, and Doppler estimation. This assesses the performance of this radar as a range-Doppler imaging system, in particular, inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR). By performing turntable experiments, we examine a number of issues that arise both from the wideband nature of the radar system and from the randomness of the transmit signal. Although the ultrawideband nature of the …
Aspect Sensitivity Measurements Of Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes Using Coherent Radar Imaging, P. B. Chilson, T.-Y. Yu, R. D. Palmer, S. Kirkwood
Aspect Sensitivity Measurements Of Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes Using Coherent Radar Imaging, P. B. Chilson, T.-Y. Yu, R. D. Palmer, S. Kirkwood
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
The Esrange VHF radar (ESRAD), located in northern Sweden (67.88) N, 21.10- E), has been used to investigate polar mesosphere summer echoes (PMSE). During July and August of 1998, coherent radar imaging (CRI) was used to study the dynamic evolution of PMSE with high temporal and spatial resolution. A CRI analysis provides an estimate of the angular brightness distribution within the radar’s probing volume. The brightness distribution is directly related to the radar reflectivity. Consequently, these data are used to investigate the aspect sensitivity of PMSE. In addition to the CRI analysis, the full correlation analysis (FCA) is used to …

Translucent Optical Wdm Networks For The Next-Generation Backbone Networks, Byrav Ramamurthy, Srinath Yaragorla, Xi Yang
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
This paper proposes an alternate approach to fully transparent and fully opaque optical networks for operating a wavelength routed optical network. In this paper, the architecture of the regeneration node that performs sparse regeneration (or translucency) is discussed. The regeneration demands generated from call blocking and signal quality requirements are addressed. Two implementation strategies for incorporating sparse regeneration are introduced and their relative merits are studied.
Optimization Of Orthogonal Polyphase Spreading Sequences For Wireless Data Applications, B. J. Wysocki, Tadeusz Wysocki
Optimization Of Orthogonal Polyphase Spreading Sequences For Wireless Data Applications, B. J. Wysocki, Tadeusz Wysocki
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
In this paper, we propose a simple but efficient method for optimizing correlation properties of polyphase spreading sequences for asynchronous DS CDMA applications. The proposed method can be used to minimize the mean square value of aperiodic crosscorrelation or the mean square value of aperiodic autocorrelation, the maximum value of aperiodic crosscorrelation functions, merit factor or other properties of the sequence set. The important feature of the method is that when applied to orthogonal sequences, it modifies correlation properties of the sequence set, while preserves their orthogonality for perfect synchronization.
Low Coherence Fiber Optics For Random Noise Radar, Ruixiang Jiang, Kyle W. Wolfe, Lim Nguyen
Low Coherence Fiber Optics For Random Noise Radar, Ruixiang Jiang, Kyle W. Wolfe, Lim Nguyen
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
Coherent random noise radar has been developed at the University of Nebraska for the detection and identification of shallow subsurface objects such as land mines. Other application ranges from remote sensing, synthetic aperture radar and high-resolution interferometer, to covert target tracking. in this paper, we describe the experimental investigation of a novel applicntion of superfluorescent fiber or erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) light sources(SFS) for random noise radar. The ultra-wide band noise coupled with the use of optical fiber delay lines makes SFS ideally suited for random noise radar applications. Optical fiber- makes long and multiple-step delay lines of a …
