With the technological advancement in body area sensor networks (BASNs), low cost high quality electrocardiographic (ECG) diagnosis systems have become important equipment for healthcare service providers. However, energy consumption and data security with ECG systems in BASNs are still two major challenges to tackle. In this study, we investigate the properties of compressed ECG data for energy saving as an effort to devise a selective encryption mechanism and a two-rate unequal error protection (UEP) scheme. The proposed selective encryption mechanism provides a simple and yet effective security solution for an ECG sensor-based communication platform, where only one percent of data …
Improving Backup And Restore Performance For Deduplication-Based Cloud Backup Services, Stephen Mkandawire
Improving Backup And Restore Performance For Deduplication-Based Cloud Backup Services, Stephen Mkandawire
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The benefits provided by cloud computing and the space savings offered by data deduplication make it attractive to host data storage services like backup in the cloud. Data deduplication relies on comparing fingerprints of data chunks, and store them in the chunk index, to identify and remove redundant data, with an ultimate goal of saving storage space and network bandwidth.
However, the chunk index presents a bottleneck to the throughput of the backup operation. While several solutions to address deduplication throughput have been proposed, the chunk index is still a centralized resource and limits the scalability of both storage capacity …

In laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), a pair of aluminum-plate walls were used to spatially confine the plasmas produced in air by a first laser pulse (KrF excimer laser) from chromium (Cr) targets with a second laser pulse (Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm, 360 mJ/pulse) introduced parallel to the sample surface to re-excite the plasmas. Optical emission enhancement was achieved by combing the spatial confinement and dual-pulse LIBS (DP-LIBS), and then optimized by adjusting the distance between the two walls and the interpulse delay time between both laser pulses. A significant enhancement factor of 168.6 for the emission intensity of the …
Current-Based Diagnosis For Gear Tooth Breaks In Wind Turbine Gearboxes, Dingguo Lu, Xiang Gong, Wei Qiao
Current-Based Diagnosis For Gear Tooth Breaks In Wind Turbine Gearboxes, Dingguo Lu, Xiang Gong, Wei Qiao
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Gearbox faults constitute a significant portion of all faults and downtime in wind turbines (WTs). Current-based gearbox fault diagnosis has significant advantages over traditional vibration-based techniques in terms of cost, implementation, and reliability. This paper derives a mathematical model for a WT drive train consisting of a twostage gearbox and a permanent magnet (PM) generator, from which the characteristic frequencies of gear tooth breaks in generator stator current frequency spectra are clearly identified. A adaptive signal resampling algorithm is proposed to convert the variable fault characteristic frequencies to constant values for WTs running at variable speeds. A fault detector is …
Energy Efficiency In Multiaccess Fading Channels Under Qos Constraints, Deli Qiao, Mustafa Cenk Gursoy, Senem Velipasalar
Energy Efficiency In Multiaccess Fading Channels Under Qos Constraints, Deli Qiao, Mustafa Cenk Gursoy, Senem Velipasalar
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
In this article, transmission over multiaccess fading channels under quality-of-service (QoS) constraints is studied in the low-power and wideband regimes. QoS constraints are imposed as limitations on the buffer violation probability. The effective capacity, which characterizes the maximum constant arrival rates in the presence of such statistical QoS constraints, is employed as the performance metric. A two-user multiaccess channel model is considered, and the minimum bit energy levels and wideband slope regions are characterized for different transmission and reception strategies, namely time-division multiple-access (TDMA), superposition coding with fixed decoding order, and superposition coding with variable decoding order. It is shown …

The ultrabroadband impedance matching of metallic gratings at the plasmonic Brewster angle [A. Al`u et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 123902 (2011)] is analyzed here in several realistic scenarios and configurations, and in the case of nonmonochromatic excitation. This phenomenon is the analogy of the well-known Brewster transmission for dielectric slabs but, when applied to plasmonic gratings, has the remarkable property of funneling and concentrating light within subwavelength slits. We analyze here how the presence of absorption and of realistic substrates and/or superstrates may influence the phenomenon, its beamwidth and angular selectivity, and its overall performance in the case …

Impact Of Wireless Communication Delay On Load Sharing Among Distributed Generation Systems Through Smart Microgrids, Song Ci, Junjie Qian, Dalei Wu, Ali Keyhani
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
Load sharing among distributed generation systems (DGS) is one of the most important topics in wireless-enabled smart microgrids, where a set of power inverters at different geographical locations work coordinately and collaboratively through wireless networks to meet the load requirement. Parallel power inverters operated in distributed generation systems rely on the underlying wireless communication channels to exchange power information among them for load sharing control. However, existing work in the area of load sharing has largely ignored the effect of wireless communication delay. Study has shown that the time-varying wireless communication delay may have a significant impact on the performance …

Dynamic Reconfigurable Multi-Cell Battery: A Novel Approach To Improve Battery Performance, Song Ci, Jiucai Zhang, Hamid Sharif, Mahmoud Alahmad
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
Many electronic systems such as robotics, battery powered electric vehicles, and mobile computing devices are powered by multi-cell battery with limited energy capacity. Therefore, maximizing the battery performance such as operating time, available capacity, and lifetime is one of the major battery design challenges. Traditional approaches such as dynamic power management to maximize the battery discharge performance have treated multi-cell battery as a pure passive component with a fixed configuration. Thus, the multi-cell battery performance is determined by the weakest battery cell, leading to a low utilization of battery energy. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-cell battery design …

This paper presents CraneTracker, a novel sensor platform for monitoring migratory birds. The platform is designed to monitor Whooping Cranes, an endangered species that conducts an annual migration of 4, 000 km between southern Texas and north-central Canada. CraneTracker includes a rich set of sensors, a multi-modal radio, and power control circuitry for sustainable, continental-scale information delivery during migration. The need for large-scale connectivity motivates the use of cellular technology in low-cost sensor platforms augmented by a low-power transceiver for ad-hoc connectivity. This platform leads to a new class of cellular sensor networks (CSNs) for time-critical and mobile sensing applications. …

Inexpensive, high-throughput, low maintenance systems for precise temporal and spatial measurement of mouse home cage behavior (including movement, feeding, and drinking) are required to evaluate products from large scale pharmaceutical design and genetic lesion programs. These measurements are also required to interpret results from more focused behavioral assays. We describe the design and validation of a highly-scalable, reliable mouse home cage behavioral monitoring system modeled on a previously described, one-ofa- kind system [1]. Mouse position was determined by solving static equilibrium equations describing the force and torques acting on the system strain gauges; feeding events were detected by a photobeam …

Nonlinear Plasmonic Cloaks To Realize Giant All-Optical Scattering Switching, Christos Argyropoulos, Pai-Yen Chen, Francesco Monticone, Giuseppe D'Aguanno, Andrea Alu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Here we extend the reach of Fano resonant coupling by combining this concept with cloaking and plasmonic resonances in a single nonlinear nanoparticle, in order to realize giant all-optical scattering nanoswitches controlled by moderate pumping intensities. We show that a core-shell nonlinear plasmonic particle may be designed to abruptly switch from being completely cloaked to being strongly resonant, with up to a 40 dB cross-sectional difference. Self-tunable optical cloaks and resonant scatterers are envisioned for use as efficient all-optical switches and nanomemories.

Boosting Optical Nonlinearities In E-Near-Zero Plasmonic Channels, Christos Argyropoulos, Pai-Yen Chen, Giuseppe D'Aguanno, Nadar Engheta, Andrea Alu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
The anomalous transmission properties of zero-permittivity ultranarrow channels are used to boost Kerr nonlinearities and achieve switching and bistable response for moderate optical intensities. Strong field enhancement, uniform all along the channel, is a typical feature of ε-near-zero supercoupling and is shown to be particularly suited to enhance nonlinear effects. This is obtained by designing narrow apertures at cutoff in a plasmonic screen. We show that this nonlinear mechanism can significantly outperform nonlinearities in traditional Fabry-P´erot resonant gratings.

Broadband Brewster Transmission Through 2d Metallic Gratings, Khai Q. Le, Christos Argyropoulos, Nadia Mattiucci, Giuseppe D'Aguanno, Mark J. Bloemer, Andrea Alu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Recently, we have introduced a mechanism to achieve ultrabroadband light funnelling and total transmission through 1D narrow metallic gratings at a specific incidence angle, the so-called plasmonic Brewster angle. This phenomenon is based on impedance matching between the guided modes supported by ultranarrow linear slits and transverse-magnetic waves at oblique incidence. In this paper, we demonstrate that such phenomenon, representing the equivalent of Brewster transmission for plasmonic screens, can also occur in 2D metallic gratings of various structural forms and shapes, and that it may be made insensitive to the azimuthal, or polarization, angle u. This finding may have relevant …

A material can be analyzed using short pulses by applying a first pulse and a second pulse to the material in which the second pulse is delayed relative to the first pulse. The first and second pulses are directed toward a material along collinear paths, and the material is ablated using the first pulse to cause particles to be emitted from the surface of the material. The emitted particles are atomized and/or ionized using the second pulse, and the radiation from the atomized and/or ionized particles is analyzed.

An Adaptive Algorithm For Corrupted Images, Deborah D. Duran-Herrmann, Qilin Qi, Yaoqing Lamar Yang
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
Noise is ever-present in communication channels and can produce devastating degradation to the images at the receiver end. In this paper, a novel approach to detecting different types of noise models in corrupted images is presented. Basically, it is a two-step process that has the ability to handle real-time applications due to its computational simplicity. The proposed algorithm handles error correction more efficiently in the second stage of processing, given a means to detect the type of noise present in the first stage. This algorithm will be verified and tested against existing methods on different noise models. Preliminary results show …
Cross-Layer Optimized Coding Mode Selection For Wireless Video Communications, Yun Ye, Song Ci, Dalei Wu
Cross-Layer Optimized Coding Mode Selection For Wireless Video Communications, Yun Ye, Song Ci, Dalei Wu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
This paper proposed a coding mode selection method for video transmission over wireless networks. Unlike previous mode selection methods disregarding channel distortion or assuming constant packet loss rate (PLR), this method includes a cross-layer controller to collect both source and channel information. The mode selection process is formulated as a delay constrained distortion minimization problem. The three components in the resulting Lagrange cost function, namely distortion, Lagrange multiplier and packet delay, are estimated with online channel information feedback. Suboptimal coding decision and physical layer modulation and coding scheme (MCS) are determined by the controller for each packet. In our experiment, …
A Study Of Correlations Between The Definition And Application Of The Gene Ontology, Yuji Mo
A Study Of Correlations Between The Definition And Application Of The Gene Ontology, Yuji Mo
Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
When using the Gene Ontology (GO), nucleotide and amino acid sequences are annotated by terms in a structured and controlled vocabulary organized into relational graphs. The usage of the vocabulary (GO terms) in the annotation of these sequences may diverge from the relations defined in the ontology. We measure the consistency of the use of GO terms by comparing GO's defined structure to the terms' application. To do this, we first use synthetic data with different characteristics to understand how these characteristics influence the correlation values determined by various similarity measures. Using these results as a baseline, we found that …

A General Attack Method For Steganography Removal Using Pseudo-Cfa Re-Interpolation, Pradhumna Shrestha, Michael Hempel, Tao Ma, Dongming Peng, Hamid Sharif
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
Watermarking and steganography are two of the most researched topics in multimedia forensics. However, easy availability of tools and technology has made their misuse a serious concern. To counteract this development some effective tools are necessary to remove malicious steganography. In this work, we introduce a novel watermark attack method which can destroy hidden information embedded in images based on the principle of re-interpolation of Color Filter Array (CFA) artifacts. In digital cameras and scanners, CFA filters are used to acquire low-resolution physical color channel information and produce a high-quality image by subsequent interpolation. We propose to emulate a similar …

A Quantitative Performance Analysis Of 2.5 Ghz And 3.65 Ghz Mobile Wimax, Pradhumna L. Shrestha
Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Mobile WiMAX has emerged as a prime contender for the de-facto ITU’s 4G standard. It provides high data rate with large coverage and vehicular mobility support. It has been, and is being, widely deployed in diverse applications like video streaming, broadcasting and data service. The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) issues licenses to operate Mobile WiMAX services in several spectrums, among which 2.5 GHz and 3.65 GHz are the most common. Because the 2.5 GHz spectrum suffers the least propagation losses, it has been widely applied commercially. For this reason, academic and industrial researchers have given it particular attention. However, in …
Relational Neighborhood Inverse Consistency For Constraint Satisfaction: A Structure-Based Approach For Adjusting Consistency And Managing Propagation, Robert J. Woodward
Relational Neighborhood Inverse Consistency For Constraint Satisfaction: A Structure-Based Approach For Adjusting Consistency And Managing Propagation, Robert J. Woodward
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Freuder and Elfe [1996] introduced Neighborhood Inverse Consistency (NIC) as a local consistency property defined on the values in the variables' domains of a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP). Debruyne and Bessiere [2011] showed that enforcing NIC on binary CSPs is ineffective on sparse graph and too costly on dense graphs. In this thesis, we propose Relational Neighborhood Inverse Consistency (RNIC), an extension of NIC defined as a local consistency property on the tuples of the relations of a CSP. We characterize RNIC for both binary and non-binary CSPs, and propose an algorithm for enforcing it whose complexity is bounded by …
Location Cheating: A Security Challenge To Location-Based Social Network Services, Mai Ren
Location Cheating: A Security Challenge To Location-Based Social Network Services, Mai Ren
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Location-based mobile social network services such as Foursquare and Gowalla have grown exponentially over the past several years. These location-based services utilize the geographical position to enrich user experiences in a variety of contexts, including location-based searching and location-based mobile advertising. To attract more users, the location-based mobile social network services provide real-world rewards to the user, when a user checks in at a certain venue or location. This gives incentives for users to cheat on their locations.
In this thesis, we investigate the threat of location cheating attacks, find the root cause of the vulnerability, and outline the possible …

A Novel Telecommunications-Based Approach To Mathematical Modeling Of Hiv Infection, Aaron T. Sharp
Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
It is well known that biological systems utilize communication in some form, one prolific example of this is the propagation of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) in the human body. By modeling HIV infection as a communication system, we hope to gain a unique insight into HIV and biological communication systems in general. Such a model would provide researchers a platform for experimenting and simulating various biological communication systems. We have previously developed a layered communication protocol for interpreting biological communication systems using telecommunications paradigms and will apply said model to HIV proliferation. We will also demonstrate the effectiveness of the …

We describe the design and implementation of a traffic crash and snow complaint GIS system developed for the Lincoln Public Works department. We also describe a novel geocoding algorithm that was used to move data from the older Criminal Justice Information System, which is a relational database, to the new GIS system. In addition, we describe the implementation of several indexing algorithms that enable the system to efficiently answer rectangular range queries and queries about the relative locations of moving objects. Finally, in many applications (on-line analysis or mobile GIS), we need to execute spatial query efficiently (fast and small), …

A Cross-Layer Design For The Performance Improvement Of Real-Time Video Transmission Of Secondary Users Over Cognitive Radio Networks, Haiyan Luo, Song Ci, Dalei Wu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
Cognitive radio (CR) has been proposed as a promising solution to improve connectivity, self-adaptability, and efficiency of spectrum usage. When used in video applications, user-perceived video quality experienced by secondary users is a very important performance metric to evaluate the effectiveness of CR technologies. However, most of the current research only considers spectrum utilization and effectiveness at medium access control (MAC) and physical layers, ignoring the system performance of the upper layers. Therefore, in this paper, we aim to improve the user experience of secondary users for wireless video services over CR networks. We propose a quality-driven cross-layer optimized system …
Classification For Mass Spectra And Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Chromatograms, Xue Tian
Classification For Mass Spectra And Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Chromatograms, Xue Tian
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Mass spectra contain characteristic information regarding the molecular structure and properties of compounds. The mass spectra of compounds from the same chemically related group are similar. Classification is one of the fundamental methodologies for analyzing mass spectral data. The primary goals of classification are to automatically group compounds based on their mass spectra, to find correlation between the properties of compounds and their mass spectra, and to provide a positive identification of unknown compounds.
This dissertation presents a new algorithm for the classification of mass spectra, the most similar neighbor with a probability-based spectrum similarity measure (MSN-PSSM). Experimental results demonstrate …
