Higher-Level Consistencies: Where, When, And How Much, Robert J. Woodward
Higher-Level Consistencies: Where, When, And How Much, Robert J. Woodward
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Determining whether or not a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) has a solution is NP-complete. CSPs are solved by inference (i.e., enforcing consistency), conditioning (i.e., doing search), or, more commonly, by interleaving the two mechanisms. The most common consistency property enforced during search is Generalized Arc Consistency (GAC). In recent years, new algorithms that enforce consistency properties stronger than GAC have been proposed and shown to be necessary to solve difficult problem instances.
We frame the question of balancing the cost and the pruning effectiveness of consistency algorithms as the question of determining where, when, and how much of a higher-level …

For years, emergency attendance institutions in Ecuador worked separately and not all of them had a 24/7 service, resulting in duplicated efforts, a waste of the scarce resources, and an absence of generalized technology. In 2012, Ecuador created an Integrated Security Service, called ECU 911, to address the need of an emergency service articulating all the first response institutions. The ECU 911 relies on the Enhanced 911 technology, having a countrywide presence. Since then, Ecuador has implemented 16 public-safety answering points and 11 decentralized operative rooms, covering all Ecuadorian territory and serving to a population of about 17 million people. …

Development Of Boron Calibration Via Hybrid Comparator Method In Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis, E. J. Artnak, S. R. Biegalski, S. Landsberger, Natale Lanno, Dennis Alexander, M. F. Byers
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
The prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA) facility at the Nuclear Engineering Teaching Laboratory at The University of Texas at Austin was utilized to quantify boron concentrations in boron carbide semiconductor films deposited on silicon substrates. Calibration was complicated by the unique and varying sample geometries analyzed. In addition, there was a dearth of solid materials available with quantified boron concentrations having comparable or readily modifiable dimensions to exploit for calibration purposes. Therefore, a novel hybrid comparator method was developed for the quantification of boron utilizing aluminum as an inexpensive and easily machinable reference material. Aluminum samples were manufactured with high …

Micron/Nano Structure Creation Through Dual Pulse Femtosecond Laser Surface Processing, Nicholas Roth
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A new technique has been developed for creating multiscale micro/nanoscale surfaces on metals. This technique is based on past work in femtosecond laser surface processing (FLSP) and dual pulse laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Using a femtosecond laser, pulse pairs were created with varying pulse separations between 0 ps to 500 ps. The creation of surface structures with dual pulse FLSP was studied on Ag, Cu, Ti, Al, Ni, and 304 stainless steel in relation to pulse separation.
Using dual pulse FLSP micro/nano structures have been created for the first time on silver. The silver structures are multiscale in nature …
Scaling Up An Infrastructure For Controlled Experimentation With Testing Techniques, Wayne D. Motycka
Scaling Up An Infrastructure For Controlled Experimentation With Testing Techniques, Wayne D. Motycka
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Software testing research often involves reproducing previous experimental results. Previous work created a repository infrastructure for containment and dissemination of testable research subjects using a private centralized storage mechanism for hosting these test subject archives. While this is a good way to store these subjects it can be inefficient when the size of subjects increases or the number of versions of the subject’s source code is large. The delivery of these large subjects from a centralized repository can be quite large and on occasion may not succeed requiring the user to repeat the download request. Coupled with the limited resources …

Cmos Radioactive Isotope Identification With Multichannel Analyzer And Embedded Neural Network, Samuel Murray
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A radiation detection and identification system is designed and implemented to perform gamma ray spectroscopy on radioactive sources and identify which isotopes are present in the sources. A multichannel analyzer is implemented on an ASIC to process the signal produced from gamma rays detected by a scintillator and photomultiplier tube and to quantize the gamma ray energies to build a histogram. A fast, low memory embedded neural network is implemented on a microcontroller ASIC to identify the isotopes present in the gamma ray histogram produced by the multichannel analyzer in real time.

Tunable Plasmonic Resonances In Highly Porous Nano-Bamboo Si-Au Superlattice-Type Thin Films, Ufuk Kılıç, Alyssa Mock, René Feder, Derek Sekora, Matthew J. Hilfiker, Rafal Korlacki, Eva Schubert, Christos Argyropoulos, Mathias Schubert
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
We report on fabrication of spatially-coherent columnar plasmonic nanostructure superlattice-type thin films with high porosity and strong optical anisotropy using glancing angle deposition. Subsequent and repeated depositions of silicon and gold lead to nanometer-dimension subcolumns with controlled lengths. The superlattice-type columns resemble bamboo structures where smaller column sections of gold form junctions sandwiched between larger silicon column sections (“nano-bamboo”). We perform generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements and finite element method computations to elucidate the strongly anisotropic optical properties of the highly-porous nano-bamboo structures. The occurrence of a strongly localized plasmonic mode with displacement pattern reminiscent of a dark quadrupole mode is …

Multiuser Coding And Signal Processing In A Low Power Sensor Network, Dongqi Lai
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Backscatter communication system is a wireless communication system that is used by both academic community and industry circles in recent years. This communication system only requires ultra-low power usage and simple design of the sensors. This project is using backscatter communication system to transmit data with backscatter tags. The method we used is semi-passive backscatter communication. This project focuses on transmitting signals with multiple sensors so there is a problem about distinguishing the signal reflected by different nodes. We modulated the transmitting digital signal with Walsh function to solve the problem of separating the signals between different nodes. By using …

Data Mining Ancient Script Image Data Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Shruti Daggumati, Peter Revesz
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
The recent surge in ancient scripts has resulted in huge image libraries of ancient texts. Data mining of the collected images enables the study of the evolution of these ancient scripts. In particular, the origin of the Indus Valley script is highly debated. We use convolutional neural networks to test which Phoenician alphabet letters and Brahmi symbols are closest to the Indus Valley script symbols. Surprisingly, our analysis shows that overall the Phoenician alphabet is much closer than the Brahmi script to the Indus Valley script symbols.

Manufacturing ultralight and mechanical reliable materials has been a long-time challenge. Ceramicbased mechanical metamaterials provide significant opportunities to reverse their brittle nature and unstable mechanical properties and have great potential as strong, ultralight, and ultrastiff materials. However, the failure of ceramics nanolattice and degradation of strength/modulus with decreasing density are caused by buckling of the struts and failure of the nodes within the nanolattices, especially during cyclic loading. Here, we explore a new class of 3D ceramic-based metamaterials with a high strength–density ratio, stiffness, recoverability, cyclability, and optimal scaling factor. Deformation mode of the fabricated nanolattices has been engineered through …

Decco: Deep-Learning Enabled Coverage And Capacity Optimization For Massive Mimo Systems, Yang Yang, Yang Li, Kai Li, Shuang Zhao, Rui Chen, Jun Wang, Song Ci
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
System capacity and service coverage are the most critical performance metrics in cellular wireless communication networks. Usually, system capacity enhancements are at the expense of service coverage degradations, and vice versa. This capacity-coverage tradeoff and the associated joint optimization problem becomes very challenging in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems, due to a large amount of antenna tilt values to be configured and very sophisticated inter-cell interference conditions, under massive antenna scenarios. This paper proposes a novel approach, namely group alignment of user signal strength (GAUSS), to efficiently support the user scheduling for the massive MIMO system, and thus serve …

The three interested parties in the ecosystem including patients, doctors, and healthcare providers are discussed in 3 different phases. In Phase 1, machine-learning based modeling and simulation analysis is performed to remotely predict a patient's risk level of having heart diseases in real time. In Phase 2, an online dynamic queueing model is devised to pair doctors with patients having high risk levels (diagnosed in Phase 1) to confirm the risk, and provide help. In Phase 3, a decision making paradigm is proposed …
Assessing The Quality And Stability Of Recommender Systems, David Shriver
Assessing The Quality And Stability Of Recommender Systems, David Shriver
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Recommender systems help users to find products they may like when lacking personal experience or facing an overwhelmingly large set of items. However, assessing the quality and stability of recommender systems can present challenges for developers. First, traditional accuracy metrics, such as precision and recall, for validating the quality of recommendations, offer only a coarse, one-dimensional view of the system performance. Second, assessing the stability of a recommender systems requires generating new data and retraining a system, which is expensive. In this work, we present two new approaches for assessing the quality and stability of recommender systems to address these …
Performance Evaluation Of V-Enodeb Using Virtualized Radio Resource Management, Sai Keerti Teja Boddepalli
Performance Evaluation Of V-Enodeb Using Virtualized Radio Resource Management, Sai Keerti Teja Boddepalli
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
With the demand upsurge for high bandwidth services, continuous increase in the number of cellular subscriptions, adoption of Internet of Things (IoT), and marked growth in Machine-to-Machine (M2M) traffic, there is great stress exerted on cellular network infrastructure. The present wireline and wireless networking technologies are rigid in nature and heavily hardware-dependent, as a result of which the process of infrastructure upgrade to keep up with future demand is cumbersome and expensive.
Software-defined networks (SDN) hold the promise to decrease network rigidity by providing central control and flow abstraction, which in current network setups are hardware-based. The embrace of SDN …
Consensus Ensemble Approaches Improve De Novo Transcriptome Assemblies, Adam Voshall
Consensus Ensemble Approaches Improve De Novo Transcriptome Assemblies, Adam Voshall
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Accurate and comprehensive transcriptome assemblies lay the foundation for a range of analyses, such as differential gene expression analysis, metabolic pathway reconstruction, novel gene discovery, or metabolic flux analysis. With the arrival of next-generation sequencing technologies it has become possible to acquire the whole transcriptome data rapidly even from non-model organisms. However, the problem of accurately assembling the transcriptome for any given sample remains extremely challenging, especially in species with a high prevalence of recent gene or genome duplications, those with alternative splicing of transcripts, or those whose genomes are not well studied. This thesis provides a detailed overview of …
Application Of Cosine Similarity In Bioinformatics, Srikanth Maturu
Application Of Cosine Similarity In Bioinformatics, Srikanth Maturu
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Finding similar sequences to an input query sequence (DNA or proteins) from a sequence data set is an important problem in bioinformatics. It provides researchers an intuition of what could be related or how the search space can be reduced for further tasks. An exact brute-force nearest-neighbor algorithm used for this task has complexity O(m * n) where n is the database size and m is the query size. Such an algorithm faces time-complexity issues as the database and query sizes increase. Furthermore, the use of alignment-based similarity measures such as minimum edit distance adds an additional complexity to the …

Critical-Point Model Dielectric Function Analysis Of Wo3 Thin Films Deposited By Atomic Layer Deposition Techniques, Ufuk Kılıç, Derek Sekora, Alyssa Mock, Rafał Korlacki, Elena M. Echeverría, Natale J. Ianno, Eva Schubert, Mathias Schubert
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
WO3 thin films were grown by atomic layer deposition and spectroscopic ellipsometry data gathered in the photon energy range of 0.72-8.5 eV and from multiple samples was utilized to determine the frequency dependent complex-valued isotropic dielectric function for WO3. We employ a critical-point model dielectric function analysis and determine a parameterized set of oscillators and compare the observed critical-point contributions with the vertical transition energy distribution found within the band structure of WO3 calculated by density functional theory. We investigate surface roughness with atomic force microscopy and compare to ellipsometric determined effective roughness layer thickness.
Real-Time Streaming Video And Image Processing On Inexpensive Hardware With Low Latency, Richard L. Gregg
Real-Time Streaming Video And Image Processing On Inexpensive Hardware With Low Latency, Richard L. Gregg
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The use of resource constrained inexpensive hardware places restrictions on the design of streaming video and image processing system performance. In order to achieve acceptable frame-per-second (fps) performance with low latency, it is important to understand the response time requirements that the system needs to meet. For humans to be able to process and react to an image there should not be more than a 100ms delay between the time a camera captures an image and subsequently displays that image to the user.
In order to accomplish this goal, several design considerations need to be taken into account that limit …

Cost-Effective Techniques For Continuous Integration Testing, Jingjing Liang
Cost-Effective Techniques For Continuous Integration Testing, Jingjing Liang
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Continuous integration (CI) development environments allow software engineers to frequently integrate and test their code. While CI environments provide advantages, they also utilize non-trivial amounts of time and resources. To address this issue, researchers have adapted techniques for test case prioritization (TCP) and regression test selection (RTS) to CI environments.
To date, current TCP techniques under CI environments have operated on test suites, and have not achieved substantial improvements. In this thesis, we use a lightweight approach based on test suite failure and execution history, and “continuously” prioritizes commits that are waiting for execution in response to the arrival of …

Mechanical Characterization Of Polysilicon Mems: A Hybrid Tmcmc/Pod-Kriging Approach, Ramin Mirzazadeh, Saeed Eftekhar Azam, Stefano Mariani
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications
Microscale uncertainties related to the geometry and morphology of polycrystalline silicon films, constituting the movable structures of micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), were investigated through a joint numerical/experimental approach. An on-chip testing device was designed and fabricated to deform a compliant polysilicon beam. In previous studies, we showed that the scattering in the input–output characteristics of the device can be properly described only if statistical features related to the morphology of the columnar polysilicon film and to the etching process adopted to release the movable structure are taken into account. In this work, a high fidelity finite element model of the …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
The semiconductor and optical properties of UO2 are investigated. The very long drift carrier lifetimes, obtained from current-voltage I(V) and capacitance-voltage C(V) measurements, along with the well-defined optical properties provide little evidence of an abundance of material defects away from the surface region. Schottky barrier formation may be possible, but very much dependent on the choice of contact and surface stoichiometry and we find that Ohmic contacts are in fact favored. Depth resolved photoemission provided evidence of a chemical shift at the surface. Density functional theory, with the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) functional, indicates a band gap of a 2.19 eV …

Broadband Plasmonic-Enhanced Forward And Backward Multiplex Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering Microscopy, Baoshan Guo, Lan Jiang, Yanhong Hua, Xin Li, Tianhong Cui, Yongfeng Lu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy is an attractive technique for label-free biochemical-specific characterization of biological specimens. However, it has very low sensitivity in monitoring and imaging molecules present in extremely low concentrations or at fast speeds. To improve this sensitivity, especially for multiplex CARS, the intensity of the pump beam and broadband Stokes beam should be enhanced simultaneously. Therefore, the gold shell particle and gold surface are demonstrated to enhance the forward and backward CARS, respectively. Results show that a signal enhancement factor of ∼25;000 can be achieved for the gold surface and an even higher enhancement factor can …
An Analysis Of Project Setup And Organization In Software, Adam Fitzgibbon
An Analysis Of Project Setup And Organization In Software, Adam Fitzgibbon
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The setup of a software project can greatly influence how efficiently software can be built. In this paper, I will be discussing my experiences with various software projects and their setups. These experiences will be used as a basis to draw conclusions on the strengths and weaknesses of specific project setups in certain situations.
Because of the complexity of building software, there isn’t a project setup that works optimally for solving every type of software-based problem. The best approach is to know what variations would best fit the situation and make design decisions from there.
