Updated Perspectives On The Role Of Biomechanics In Copd: Considerations For The Clinician, Jennifer M. Yentes, Wai-Yan Liu, Kuan Zhang, Eric J. Markvicka, Stephen I. Rennard

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) demonstrate extra-pulmonary functional decline such as an increased prevalence of falls. Biomechanics offers insight into functional decline by examining mechanics of abnormal movement patterns. This review discusses biomechanics of functional outcomes, muscle mechanics, and breathing mechanics in patients with COPD as well as future directions and clinical perspectives. Patients with COPD demonstrate changes in their postural sway during quiet standing compared to controls, and these deficits are exacerbated when sensory information (eg, eyes closed) is manipulated. If standing balance is disrupted with a perturbation, patients with COPD are slower to return to baseline …

Parasol: Efficient Parallel Synthesis Of Large Model Spaces, Clay Stevens, Hamid Bagheri Sep 2022

Parasol: Efficient Parallel Synthesis Of Large Model Spaces, Clay Stevens, Hamid Bagheri

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Formal analysis is an invaluable tool for software engineers, yet state-of-the-art formal analysis techniques suffer from well-known limitations in terms of scalability. In particular, some software design domains—such as tradeoff analysis and security analysis—require systematic exploration of potentially huge model spaces, which further exacerbates the problem. Despite this present and urgent challenge, few techniques exist to support the systematic exploration of large model spaces. This paper introduces Parasol, an approach and accompanying tool suite, to improve the scalability of large-scale formal model space exploration. Parasol presents a novel parallel model space synthesis approach, backed with unsupervised learning to automatically derive …

Nonlinear Strong Coupling By Second-Harmonic Generation Enhancement In Plasmonic Nanopatch Antennas, Bryson Krause, Dhananjay Mishra, Jiyang Chen, Christos Argyropoulos, Thang Hoang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Enhanced electromagnetic fields within plasmonic nanocavity mode volumes enable multiple significant effects that lead to applications in both the linear and nonlinear optical regimes. In this work, we demonstrate enhanced second harmonic generation from individual plasmonic nanopatch antennas which are formed by separating silver nanocubes from a smooth gold film using a sub-10 nm zinc oxide spacer layer. When the nanopatch antennas are excited at their fundamental plasmon frequency, a 104-fold increase in the intensity of the second harmonic generation wave is observed. Moreover, by integrating quantum emitters that have an absorption energy at the fundamental frequency, a …

Feed Forward Neural Networks With Asymmetric Training, Archit Srivastava Aug 2022

Feed Forward Neural Networks With Asymmetric Training, Archit Srivastava

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Our work presents a new perspective on training feed-forward neural networks(FFNN). We introduce and formally define the notion of symmetry and asymmetry in the context of training of FFNN. We provide a mathematical definition to generalize the idea of sparsification and demonstrate how sparsification can induce asymmetric training in FFNN.

In FFNN, training consists of two phases, forward pass and backward pass. We define symmetric training in FFNN as follows-- If a neural network uses the same parameters for both forward pass and backward pass, then the training is said to be symmetric.

The definition of asymmetric training in artificial …

A New Implementation Of Federated Learning For Privacy And Security Enhancement, Xiang Ma, Haijian Sun, Rose Qingyang Hu, Yi Qian Aug 2022

A New Implementation Of Federated Learning For Privacy And Security Enhancement, Xiang Ma, Haijian Sun, Rose Qingyang Hu, Yi Qian

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Motivated by the ever-increasing concerns on personal data privacy and the rapidly growing data volume at local clients, federated learning (FL) has emerged as a new machine learning setting. An FL system is comprised of a central parameter server and multiple local clients. It keeps data at local clients and learns a centralized model by sharing the model parameters learned locally. No local data needs to be shared, and privacy can be well protected. Nevertheless, since it is the model instead of the raw data that is shared, the system can be exposed to the poisoning model attacks launched by …

A Novel Testbed For Evaluation Of Operational Technology Communications Protocols And Their On-Device Implementations, Matthew Boeding

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Operational Technology (OT) and Infrastructure Technology (IT) systems are converging with the rapid addition of centralized remote management in OT systems. Previously air-gapped systems are now interconnected through the internet with application-specific protocols. This has led to systems that had limited access points being remotely accessible. In different OT sectors, legacy protocols previously transmitted over serial communication were updated to allow internet communication with legacy devices. New protocols such as IEC-61850 were also introduced for monitoring of different OT resources. The IEC-61850 standard’s Generic Object Oriented Substation Event (GOOSE) protocol outlines the representation and communication of a variety of different …

Feature Analysis Of Indus Valley And Dravidian Language Scripts With Similarity Matrices, Sarat Sasank Barla, Sai Surya Sanjay Alamuru, Peter Revesz

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

This paper investigates the similarity between the Indus Valley script and the Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu scripts that are used to write Dravidian languages. The closeness of these scripts is determined by applying a feature analysis of each sign of these scripts and creating similarity matrices that describe the similarity of any pair of signs from two different scripts. The feature list that we use for the analysis of these Dravidian language-related scripts includes six new features beyond the thirteen features that were used for the study of Minoan Linear A and related scripts by Revesz. These new features …

Simulating Sub-Threshold Communication Channels Through Neurons, Richard Maina

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Molecular Communication is an emerging paradigm with the potential to revolutionize the technology behind wearable and implantable devices and the broad range of functions they support, from tracking physical activity to medical diagnostics. This can be achieved through intra-body communication networks that take advantage of natural biological processes as a means of transmitting, propagating and receiving information. In this thesis we focus particularly on using the neuron as a means to facilitate information transfer for interconnected wearable or implantable devices through a technique known as sub-threshold electrical stimulation. We develop upon a prior work by introducing a linear model of …

Combining Solution Reuse And Bound Tightening For Efficient Analysis Of Evolving Systems, Clay Stevens, Hamid Bagheri Jul 2022

Combining Solution Reuse And Bound Tightening For Efficient Analysis Of Evolving Systems, Clay Stevens, Hamid Bagheri

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Software engineers have long employed formal verification to ensure the safety and validity of their system designs. As the system changes—often via predictable, domain-specific operations—their models must also change, requiring system designers to repeatedly execute the same formal verification on similar system models. State-of-the-art formal verification techniques can be expensive at scale, the cost of which is multiplied by repeated analysis. This paper presents a novel analysis technique—implemented in a tool called SoRBoT—which can automatically determine domain-specific optimizations that can dramatically reduce the cost of repeatedly analyzing evolving systems. Different from all prior approaches, which focus on either tightening the …

Influence Of Aluminum Addition On The Laser Powder Bed Fusion Of Copper-Aluminum Mixtures, Nada Kraiem, Loic Constantin, A. Mao, Fei Wang, Bai Cui, Jean-François Silvain, Yongfeng Lu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

The high optical reflectivity of copper (Cu) in the near infrared (NIR) domain and its elevated heat dissipation make Cu a challenging metal for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), even with high energy densities (EDs). In this study, we demonstrated that adding aluminum (Al) powder by as little as 0.75, 1.5, and 3 wt.% substantially enhances Cu processability, leading to denser (up to 98%) and smoother (Ra = 3.3 𝜇m) Cu-Al parts as compared to 95% and 18 𝜇m, respectively, for the parts printed using pure Cu. In addition, this method reduces the ED required by a factor of two …

Consemblex: A Consensus-Based Transcriptome Assembly Approach That Extends Consemble And Improves Transcriptome Assembly, Richard Mwaba

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

An accurate transcriptome is essential to understanding biological systems enabling omics analyses such as gene expression, gene discovery, and gene-regulatory network construction. However, assembling an accurate transcriptome is challenging, especially for organisms without adequate reference genomes or transcriptomes. While several methods for transcriptome assembly with different approaches exist, it is still difficult to establish the most accurate methods. This thesis explores the different transcriptome assembly methods and compares their performances using simulated benchmark transcriptomes with varying complexity. We also introduce ConSemblEX to improve a consensus-based ensemble transcriptome assembler, ConSemble, in three main areas: we provide the ability to use any …

Asymmetric Control Of Light At The Nanoscale, Christos Argyropoulos

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Breaking reciprocity at the nanoscale can produce directional formation of images due to the asymmetric nonlinear optical response of subwavelength anisotropic resonators. The self-induced passive non-reciprocity has advantages compared to magnet or time modulation approaches and may impact both classical and quantum photonics.

One-Bit Algorithm Considerations For Sparse Pmcw Radar, Ethan Triplett Jul 2022

One-Bit Algorithm Considerations For Sparse Pmcw Radar, Ethan Triplett

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Phase Modulated Continuous Wave (PMCW) radar an emerging technology for autonomous cars. It is more flexible than the current frequency modulated systems, offering better detection resolution, interference mitigation, and future development opportunities. The issue preventing PMCW adoption is the need for high sample-rate analog to digital converters (ADCs). Due to device limits, a large increase in cost and power consumption occurs for every added resolution bit for a given sampling rate. This thesis explores radar detection techniques for few-bit and 1-bit ADC measurements. 1-bit quantization typically results in poor amplitude estimation, which can limit detections if the target signals are …

Halide Perovskites Enable Polaritonic Xy Spin Hamiltonian At Room Temperature, Renjie Tao, Kai Peng, Louis Haeberlé, Quanwei Li, Dafei Jin, Graham R. Fleming, Stéphane Kéna-Cohen, Xiang Zhang, Wei Bao

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Exciton polaritons, the part-light and part-matter quasiparticles in semiconductor optical cavities, are promising for exploring Bose–Einstein condensation, non-equilibrium many-body physics and analogue simulation at elevated temperatures. However, a room-temperature polaritonic platform on par with the GaAs quantum wells grown by molecular beam epitaxy at low temperatures remains elusive. The operation of such a platform calls for long-lifetime, strongly interacting excitons in a stringent material system with large yet nanoscale-thin geometry and homogeneous properties. Here, we address this challenge by adopting a method based on the solution synthesis of excitonic halide perovskites grown under nanoconfinement. Such nanoconfinement growth facilitates the synthesis …

Design Of Hardware To Aid Smartphone-Based Oscilloscope App, Riddock Moran

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

A smartphone-based oscilloscope improves on traditional lab oscilloscopes in accessibility and portability but faces several performance limitations compared to traditional oscilloscopes. Among these, an oscilloscope app that uses the phone’s audio to read voltage signals will have a sampling rate and voltage bottlenecked by the capabilities of the audio codec, which will rarely exceed a rate of 48 kHz and 1 volt, respectively. Additionally, smartphones lack the ability to read line-in audio, allowing only one channel input through the microphone. Direct connections to an audio source may not be possible due to requiring an audio jack connection, and different poles …

Designing A Digital Electronics Lab, Ben Buckwalter May 2022

Designing A Digital Electronics Lab, Ben Buckwalter

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Hardware electronics tools can be more expensive than a new learner is willing to invest resulting in a barrier to entry. Furthermore, it can be difficult for a new learner to know where to start when learning electronics. To resolve this issue, we first explore current mobile app solutions that provide free electronics tooling. Then, we propose a design for a new mobile app that contains basic function generator and oscilloscope functionality as well as the learning resources necessary in order to guide new learners in the basics of digital electronics.

Symbolic Ns-3 For Efficient Exhaustive Testing, Jianfei Shao May 2022

Symbolic Ns-3 For Efficient Exhaustive Testing, Jianfei Shao

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Exhaustive testing is an important type of simulation, where a user exhaustively simulates a protocol for all possible cases with respect to some uncertain factors, such as all possible packet delays or packet headers. It is useful for completely evaluating the protocol performance, finding the worst-case performance, and detecting possible design or implementation bugs of a protocol. It is, however, time consuming to use the brute force method with current NS-3, a widely used network simulator, for exhaustive testing. In this paper, we present our work on Sym-NS-3 for more efficient exhaustive testing, which leverages a powerful program analysis technique …

Identification Of Orthologous Gene Groups Using Machine Learning, Dillon Burgess Apr 2022

Identification Of Orthologous Gene Groups Using Machine Learning, Dillon Burgess

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Identification of genes that show similarity between different organisms, a.k.a orthologous genes, is an open problem in computational biology. The purpose of this thesis is to create an algorithm to group orthologous genes using machine learning. Following an optimization step to find the best characterization based on training data, we represented sequences of genes or proteins with kmer vectors. These kmer vectors were then clustered into orthologous groups using hierarchical clustering. We optimized the clustering phase with the same training data for the method and parameter selection. Our results indicated that use of protein sequences with k=2 and scaling the …

Machine Learning-Based Device Type Classification For Iot Device Re- And Continuous Authentication, Kaustubh Gupta

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Today, the use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices is higher than ever and it is growing rapidly. Many IoT devices are usually manufactured by home appliance manufacturers where security and privacy are not the foremost concern. When an IoT device is connected to a network, currently there does not exist a strict authentication method that verifies the identity of the device, allowing any rogue IoT device to authenticate to an access point. This thesis addresses the issue by introducing methods for continuous and re-authentication of static and dynamic IoT devices, respectively. We introduce mechanisms and protocols for authenticating a …

Characterizing And Predicting Human Visual Perception Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Gestures, Paul Fletcher Apr 2022

Characterizing And Predicting Human Visual Perception Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Gestures, Paul Fletcher

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are being used in public domains and hazardous environments where effective communication strategies are critical. UAV gesture techniques have been shown to communicate meaning to human observers and may be ideal in contexts that require lightweight systems such as unmanned aerial flight, however, this work may be limited to an idealized range of viewer perspectives. As gesture is a visual communication technique it is necessary to consider how the perception of a robot gesture may suffer from obfuscation or self-occlusion from some viewpoints. This thesis presents the results of three online user-studies that examine participants’ ability …

Learning Domain Invariant Information To Enhance Presentation Attack Detection In Visible Face Recognition Systems, Jennifer Hamblin Apr 2022

Learning Domain Invariant Information To Enhance Presentation Attack Detection In Visible Face Recognition Systems, Jennifer Hamblin

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Face signatures, including size, shape, texture, skin tone, eye color, appearance, and scars/marks, are widely used as discriminative, biometric information for access control. Despite recent advancements in facial recognition systems, presentation attacks on facial recognition systems have become increasingly sophisticated. The ability to detect presentation attacks or spoofing attempts is a pressing concern for the integrity, security, and trust of facial recognition systems. Multi-spectral imaging has been previously introduced as a way to improve presentation attack detection by utilizing sensors that are sensitive to different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum (e.g., visible, near infrared, long-wave infrared). Although multi-spectral presentation attack …
