The Joint Battlespace Infosphere (JBI) architecture defines the Information Object (IO) as its basic unit of data. This research proposes an IO engineering methodology that will introduce componentized IO type development. This enhancement will improve the ability of JBI users to create and store IO type schemas, and query and subscribe to information objects, which may be semantically related by their inclusion of common metadata elements. Several parallel efforts are being explored to enable efficient storage and retrieval of IOs. As the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) implementation becomes more widespread, the IP Security (IPSec) features embedded into the next-generation protocol will become more accessible than ever. Though the network-layer encryption provided by IPSec is a boon to data security, its use renders standard network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) useless. The problem of performing intrusion detection on encrypted traffic has been addressed by differing means with each technique requiring one or more static secret keys to be shared with the NIDS beforehand. Substantial performance improvement of a wide area video surveillance network can be obtained with the addition of a Line-of-Sight sensor. The research described in this thesis shows that while the Line-of-Sight sensor cannot monitor areas with the ubiquity of video cameras alone, the combined network produces substantially fewer false alarms and superior location precision for numerous moving people than video. Recent progress in the fabrication of inexpensive, robust CMOS-based video cameras have triggered a new approach to wide area surveillance of busy areas such as modeling an airport corridor as a distributed sensor network problem. The United States Air Force has put an increased emphasis on the timely delivery of precision weapons. Part of this effort has been to us multiple bay aircraft such the B-1B Lancer and B-52 Stratofortress to provide Close Air Support and responsive strikes using 1760 weapons. In order to provide greater flexibility, the aircraft carry heterogeneous payloads which can require deconfliction in order to drop multiple different types of weapons. Geolocation is the process of identifying a node using only its Internet Protocol (IP) address. Locating a node on a LAN poses particular challenges due to the small scale of the problem and the increased significance of queuing delay. This study builds upon existing research in the area of geolocation and develops a heuristic tailored to the difficulties inherent in LANs called the LAN Time to Location Heuristic (LTTLH). The 453rd Electronic Warfare Squadron supports on-going military operations by providing battlefield commanders with aircraft ingress and egress routes that minimize the risk of shoulder or ground-fired missile attacks on our aircraft. To determine these routes, the 453rd simulates engagements between ground-to-air missiles and allied aircraft to determine the probability of a successful attack. The simulations are computationally expensive, often requiring two-hours for a single 10-second missile engagement. Hundreds of simulations are needed to perform a complete risk assessment which includes evaluating the effectiveness of countermeasures such as flares, chaff, jammers, and missile warning systems. Most organizations have formal and informal elements. Formal structures are usually documented in organizational charts showing chain of command, levels of authority, and personnel resources. The actual effectiveness of the organization or specific individuals may actually depend on informal structures and internal communication networks. These are by definition personality-dependent and may provide significant insight into how work actually gets done within the organization. This research develops a method for efficient discovery of wireless devices for a frequency hopping spread spectrum, synchronous, ad hoc network comprised of clustered sub-networks. The Bluetooth wireless protocol serves as the reference protocol. The development of a discovery, or outreach, method for scatternets requires the characterization of performance metrics of Bluetooth piconets, many of which are unavailable in literature. A conceptual transform domain communication system (TDCS) is shown capable of operating successfully using M-Ary phase shift keying (MPSK) data modulation in a multiple access environment. Using spectral encoding, the conceptual TDCS provides an effective means for mitigating interference affects while achieving multiple access communications. The use of transform domain processing with MPSK data modulation (TD-MPSK) provides higher spectral efficiency relative to other modulation techniques (antipodal signaling and cyclic shift keying) considered previously for TDCS applications. This research explored the implementation of Protocol Independent Multicasting - Dense Mode (PIM-DM) in a LEO satellite constellation. PIM-DM is a terrestrial protocol for distributing traffic efficiently between subscriber nodes by combining data streams into a tree-based structure, spreading from the root of the tree to the branches. Using this structure, a minimum number of connections are required to transfer data, decreasing the load on intermediate satellite routers. Soon, advancements in data encryption technology will make real-time decryption of the contents of network packets virtually impossible. This research anticipates this development and extracts useful information based on packet level characteristics. Distinguishing characteristics from e-mail, HTTP, print, and FTP applications are identified and analyzed. The analysis of collected data from an ad-hoc wireless network reveals that distinguishing characteristics of network traffic do indeed exist. These characteristics include packet size, packet frequency, inter-packet correlation, and channel utilization. Without knowing the contents of packets or the direction of the traffic flow, the applications accessing the wireless network can be determined.

IEEE 802.11 WLANs and Bluetooth piconets both operate in the 2.4 GHz Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM) radio band. When operating in close proximity, these two technologies interfere with each other. Current literature suggests that IEEE 802.11 (employing direct sequence spread spectrum technology) is more susceptible to this interference than Bluetooth, which uses frequency hopping spread spectrum technology, resulting in reduced throughput. Special operations missions often depend on discrete insertion of highly trained soldiers into dangerous territory. To reduce the risk involved in this type of engagement, Low Probability of Detection radar waveforms have been designed specifically to defeat enemy passive radar detectors. These waveforms have been shown to perform well when the Doppler shift is minimal, but their performance degrades dramatically with increased frequency shifts due to Doppler effects. This research addresses the problem of verifying implementations against specifications through an innovative logic approach. Congruent weak conformance, a formal relationship between agents and specifications, has been developed and proven to be a congruent partial order. This property arises from a set of relations called weak conformations. The largest, called weak conformance, is analogous to Milner's observational equivalence. Weak conformance is not an equivalence, however, but rather an ordering relation among processes. Weak conformance allows behaviors in the implementation that are unreachable in the specification. Furthermore, it exploits output concurrencies and allows interleaving of extraneous output actions in the implementation. …

A recently proposed Wavelet Domain Communication System (WDCS) using transform domain processing demonstrated excellent interference avoidance capability under adverse environmental conditions. This work extends previous results by: 1) incorporating a wavelet packet decomposition technique, 2) demonstrating M-Ary signaling capability, and 3) providing increased adaptivity over a larger class of interference signals. The newly proposed packet-based WDCS is modeled and its performance characterized using MATLAB®. Two types of micro-optical device arrays exist: individually addressable and matrix addressable. The matrix addressable array has a drastically reduced number of metal lines and can potentially be fabricated into large, dense (over 1k elements) arrays. The Integrated MANET Mutual Authentication System (IMMAS) provides implied mutual authentication of all routing and data traffic within a Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) by combining Elliptic Curve Cryptography, a public-key cryptosystem, with the Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) Protocol. Military communications networks typically employ a gateway multiplexer to aggregate all communications traffic onto a single link. These multiplexers typically use a static bandwidth allocation method via time-division multiplexing (TDM). Inefficiencies occur when a high-bandwidth circuit, e.g., a video teleconferencing circuit, is relatively inactive rendering a considerable portion of the aggregate bandwidth wasted while inactive. Dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) reclaims unused bandwidth from circuits with low utilization and reallocates it to circuits with higher utilization without adversely affecting queuing delay. The United States Air Force relies heavily on computer networks for every-day operations. The medium access control (MAC) protocol currently used by most local area (LAN) permits a single station to access the network at a time (e.g. CSMA/CD or Ethernet). This limits network throughput to, at most, the maximum transmission rate of a single node with overhead neglected. Significant delays are observed when a LAN is overloaded by multiple users attempting to access the common medium. Code division multiple access provides an ability to share channel bandwidth amongst users at the same time. Individual user performance is not degraded with the addition of more users, unlike traditional Ethernet. Using direct sequenced spread spectrum in a wired local area network, network performance is improved. For a network in overload conditions, individual station throughput is increased by nearly 212% while mean end-to-end delay was reduced by 800%. The vast improvement demonstrated by this research has the capability to extend legacy-cabling infrastructures for many years to come while easily accommodating new bandwidth intensive multimedia applications.

A proposed wavelet domain communication system (WDCS) using transform domain processing is demonstrated as having enhanced interference avoidance capability under adverse environmental conditions. The WDCS system samples the environment and uses the wavelet transform, to determine interference presence and time/scale location. A digital communication waveform (basis function) is subsequently designed in the wavelet domain to specifically avoid regions containing interference. The WDCS basis function is data modulated prior to transmission. Assuming perfect synchronization, the receiver replicates a locally generated basis function for correlating with the received signal and demodulating the data.
