Effective Capacity In Wireless Networks: A Comprehensive Survey, Muhammad Amjad, Mubashir Husain Rehmani, Leila Musavian

Publications

Low latency applications, such as multimedia communications, autonomous vehicles, and Tactile Internet are the emerging applications for next-generation wireless networks, such as 5th generation (5G) mobile networks. Existing physical layer channel models, however, do not explicitly consider quality of service (QoS) aware related parameters under specific delay constraints. To investigate the performance of low-latency applications in future networks, a new mathematical framework is needed. Effective capacity (EC), which is a link-layer channel model with QoS-awareness, can be used to investigate the performance of wireless networks under certain statistical delay constraints. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on existing …

Feature Space Modeling For Accurate And Efficient Learning From Non-Stationary Data, Ayesha Akter Oct 2019

Feature Space Modeling For Accurate And Efficient Learning From Non-Stationary Data, Ayesha Akter

Doctoral Dissertations

A non-stationary dataset is one whose statistical properties such as the mean, variance, correlation, probability distribution, etc. change over a specific interval of time. On the contrary, a stationary dataset is one whose statistical properties remain constant over time. Apart from the volatile statistical properties, non-stationary data poses other challenges such as time and memory management due to the limitation of computational resources mostly caused by the recent advancements in data collection technologies which generate a variety of data at an alarming pace and volume. Additionally, when the collected data is complex, managing data complexity, emerging from its dimensionality and …

Deep Hashing By Discriminating Hard Examples, Cheng Yan, Guansong Pang, Xiao Bai, Chunhua Shen, Jun Zhou, Edwin Hancock Oct 2019

Deep Hashing By Discriminating Hard Examples, Cheng Yan, Guansong Pang, Xiao Bai, Chunhua Shen, Jun Zhou, Edwin Hancock

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper tackles a rarely explored but critical problem within learning to hash, i.e., to learn hash codes that effectively discriminate hard similar and dissimilar examples, to empower large-scale image retrieval. Hard similar examples refer to image pairs from the same semantic class that demonstrate some shared appearance but have different fine-grained appearance. Hard dissimilar examples are image pairs that come from different semantic classes but exhibit similar appearance. These hard examples generally have a small distance due to the shared appearance. Therefore, effective encoding of the hard examples can well discriminate the relevant images within a small Hamming distance, …

Communication Capability For A Simulation-Based Test And Evaluation Framework For Autonomous Systems, Ntiana Sakioti Oct 2019

Communication Capability For A Simulation-Based Test And Evaluation Framework For Autonomous Systems, Ntiana Sakioti

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The design and testing process for collaborative autonomous systems can be extremely complex and time-consuming, so it is advantageous to begin testing early in the design. A Test & Evaluation (T&E) Framework was previously developed to enable the testing of autonomous software at various levels of mixed reality. The Framework assumes a modular approach to autonomous software development, which introduces the possibility that components are not in the same stage of development. The T&E Framework allows testing to begin early in a simulated environment, with the autonomous software methodically migrating from virtual to augmented to physical environments as component development …

Explaining Regressions Via Alignment Slicing And Mending, Haijun Wang, Yun Lin, Zijiang Yang, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jinsong Dong, Qinghua Zheng, Ting Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Regression faults, which make working code stop functioning, are often introduced when developers make changes to the software. Many regression fault localization techniques have been proposed. However, issues like inaccuracy and lack of explanation are still obstacles for their practical application. In this work, we propose a trace-based approach to identifying not only where the root cause of a regression bug lies, but also how the defect is propagated to its manifestation as the explanation. In our approach, we keep the trace of original correct version as reference and infer the faulty steps on the trace of regression version so …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cloud is a computing paradigm for allowing data owners to outsource their data to enjoy on-demand services and mitigate the burden of local data storage. However, secure sharing of data via cloud remains an essential issue since the cloud service provider is untrusted. Fortunately, asymmetric-key encryption, such as identity-based encryption (IBE) and attribute-based encryption (ABE), provides a promising tool to offer data confidentiality and has been widely applied in cloud-based applications. In this paper, we summarize the common properties of most of IBE and ABE and introduce a cryptographic primitive called ElGamal type cryptosystem. This primitive can be used to …

Exercises Integrating High School Mathematics With Robot Motion Planning, Ronald I. Greenberg, George K. Thiruvathukal

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper presents progress in developing exercises for high school students incorporating level-appropriate mathematics into robotics activities. We assume mathematical foundations ranging from algebra to precalculus, whereas most prior work on integrating mathematics into robotics uses only very elementary mathematical reasoning or, at the other extreme, is comprised of technical papers or books using calculus and other advanced mathematics. The exercises suggested are relevant to any differerential-drive robot, which is an appropriate model for many different varieties of educational robots. They guide students towards comparing a variety of natural navigational strategies making use of typical movement primitives. The exercises align …

Similarity-Based Chained Transfer Learning For Energy Forecasting With Big Data, Yifang Tian, Ljubisa Sehovac, Katarina Grolinger Sep 2019

Similarity-Based Chained Transfer Learning For Energy Forecasting With Big Data, Yifang Tian, Ljubisa Sehovac, Katarina Grolinger

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Smart meter popularity has resulted in the ability to collect big energy data and has created opportunities for large-scale energy forecasting. Machine Learning (ML) techniques commonly used for forecasting, such as neural networks, involve computationally intensive training typically with data from a single building or a single aggregated load to predict future consumption for that same building or aggregated load. With hundreds of thousands of meters, it becomes impractical or even infeasible to individually train a model for each meter. Consequently, this paper proposes Similarity-Based Chained Transfer Learning (SBCTL), an approach for building neural network-based models for many meters by …

Why Reinventing The Wheels? An Empirical Study On Library Reuse And Re-Implementation, Bowen Xu, Le An, Ferdian Thung, Foutse Khomh, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Nowadays, with the rapid growth of open source software (OSS), library reuse becomes more and more popular since a large amount of third- party libraries are available to download and reuse. A deeper understanding on why developers reuse a library (i.e., replacing self-implemented code with an external library) or re-implement a library (i.e., replacing an imported external library with self-implemented code) could help researchers better understand the factors that developers are concerned with when reusing code. This understanding can then be used to improve existing libraries and API recommendation tools for researchers and practitioners by using the developers concerns identified …

Pipelined Parallelism In A Work-Stealing Scheduler, Thomas Kelly Sep 2019

Pipelined Parallelism In A Work-Stealing Scheduler, Thomas Kelly

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

A pipeline is a particular type of parallel program structure, often used to represent loops with cross-iteration dependencies. Pipelines cannot be expressed with the typical parallel language constructs offered by most environments. Therefore, in order to run pipelines, it is necessary to write a parallel language and scheduler with specialized support for them. Some such schedulers are written exclusively for pipelines and unable to run any other type of program, which allows for certain optimizations that take advantage of the pipeline structure. Other schedulers implement support for pipelines on top of a general-purpose scheduling algorithm. One example of such an …

Predicting The Hardness Of Turf Surfaces From A Soil Moisture Sensor Using Iot Technologies, Ann Marie Mckeon Sep 2019

Predicting The Hardness Of Turf Surfaces From A Soil Moisture Sensor Using Iot Technologies, Ann Marie Mckeon

Other

In horseracing, “the going” is a term to describe the racetrack ground conditions. In Ireland presently, a groundskeeper or course clerk walks the racecourse poking it with a blackthorn stick, assesses conditions, and declares the going – it is a subjective measurement.

This thesis will propose using remote low-cost soil moisture sensors to gather high frequency data about the soil water content in the ground and to enable informed decisions to be made. This will remove the subjective element from the ground hardness, and look at the data in an objective way.

The soil moisture sensor will systematically collect high …

A Low-Cost Soft Robotic Hand Exoskeleton For Use In Therapy Of Limited Hand–Motor Function, Grant Rudd, Liam Daly, Vukica Jovanovic, Filip Cukov

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

We present the design and validation of a low-cost, customizable and 3D-printed anthropomorphic soft robotic hand exoskeleton for rehabilitation of hand injuries using remotely administered physical therapy regimens. The design builds upon previous work done on cable actuated exoskeleton designs by implementing the same kinematic functionality, but with the focus shifted to ease of assembly and cost effectiveness as to allow patients and physicians to manufacture and assemble the hardware necessary to implement treatment. The exoskeleton was constructed solely from 3D-printed and widely available of-the-shelf components. Control of the actuators was realized using an Arduino microcontroller, with a custom-designed shield …

Efficient Distributed Reachability Querying Of Massive Temporal Graphs, Tianming Zhang, Yunjun Gao, Chen Lu, Wei Guo, Shiliang Pu, Baihua Zheng, Christian S. Jensen Sep 2019

Efficient Distributed Reachability Querying Of Massive Temporal Graphs, Tianming Zhang, Yunjun Gao, Chen Lu, Wei Guo, Shiliang Pu, Baihua Zheng, Christian S. Jensen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Reachability computation is a fundamental graph functionality with a wide range of applications. In spite of this, little work has as yet been done on efficient reachability queries over temporal graphs, which are used extensively to model time-varying networks, such as communication networks, social networks, and transportation schedule networks. Moreover, we are faced with increasingly large real-world temporal networks that may be distributed across multiple data centers. This state of affairs motivates the paper's study of efficient reachability queries on distributed temporal graphs. We propose an efficient index, called Temporal Vertex Labeling (TVL), which is a labeling scheme for distributed …

Fkrr-Mvsf: A Fuzzy Kernel Ridge Regression Model For Identifying Dna-Binding Proteins By Multi-View Sequence Features Via Chou's Five-Step Rule, Yi Zou, Yije Ding, Jijun Tang, Fei Guo, Li Peng

Faculty Publications

DNA-binding proteins play an important role in cell metabolism. In biological laboratories, the detection methods of DNA-binding proteins includes yeast one-hybrid methods, bacterial singles and X-ray crystallography methods and others, but these methods involve a lot of labor, material and time. In recent years, many computation-based approachs have been proposed to detect DNA-binding proteins. In this paper, a machine learning-based method, which is called the Fuzzy Kernel Ridge Regression model based on Multi-View Sequence Features (FKRR-MVSF), is proposed to identifying DNA-binding proteins. First of all, multi-view sequence features are extracted from protein sequences. Next, a Multiple Kernel Learning (MKL) algorithm …

Preference Learning And Similarity Learning Perspectives On Personalized Recommendation, Duy Dung Le Sep 2019

Preference Learning And Similarity Learning Perspectives On Personalized Recommendation, Duy Dung Le

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Personalized recommendation, whose objective is to generate a limited list of items (e.g., products on Amazon, movies on Netflix, or pins on Pinterest, etc.) for each user, has gained extensive attention from both researchers and practitioners in the last decade. The necessity of personalized recommendation is driven by the explosion of available options online, which makes it difficult, if not downright impossible, for each user to investigate every option. Product and service providers rely on recommendation algorithms to identify manageable number of the most likely or preferred options to be presented to each user. Also, due to the limited screen …

Confusion And Information Triggered By Photos In Persona Profiles, Joni Salminen, Soon-Gyo Jung, Jisun An, Haewoon Kwak, Lene Nielsen, Bernard J. Jansen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We investigate whether additional photos beyond a single headshot makes a persona profile more informative without confusing the end user. We conduct an eye-tracking experiment and qualitative interviews with digital content creators after varying the persona in photos via a single headshot, a headshot and photo of the persona in different contexts, and a headshot with photos of different people with key persona attributes the gender and age. Findings show that contextual photos provide significantly more persona information to end users; however, showing photos of multiple people engenders confusion and lowers informativeness. Also, as anticipated, viewing additional photos requires more …

Optimal Sampling Paths For Autonomous Vehicles In Uncertain Ocean Flows, Andrew J. De Stefan Aug 2019

Optimal Sampling Paths For Autonomous Vehicles In Uncertain Ocean Flows, Andrew J. De Stefan

Dissertations

Despite an extensive history of oceanic observation, researchers have only begun to build a complete picture of oceanic currents. Sparsity of instrumentation has created the need to maximize the information extracted from every source of data in building this picture. Within the last few decades, autonomous vehicles, or AVs, have been employed as tools to aid in this research initiative. Unmanned and self-propelled, AVs are capable of spending weeks, if not months, exploring and monitoring the oceans. However, the quality of data acquired by these vehicles is highly dependent on the paths along which they collect their observational data. The …

Polarization Division Multiplexing For Optical Data Communications, Darko Ivanovich Aug 2019

Polarization Division Multiplexing For Optical Data Communications, Darko Ivanovich

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Multiple parallel channels are ubiquitous in optical communications, with spatial division multiplexing (separate physical paths) and wavelength division multiplexing (separate optical wavelengths) being the most common forms. In this research work, we investigate the viability of polarization division multiplexing, the separation of distinct parallel optical communication channels through the polarization properties of light. We investigate polarization division multiplexing based optical communication systems in five distinct parts. In the first part of the work, we define a simulation model of two or more linearly polarized optical signals (at different polarization angles) that are transmitted through a common medium (e.g., air), filtered …

Decoupling Information And Connectivity Via Information-Centric Transport, Hila Ben Abraham Aug 2019

Decoupling Information And Connectivity Via Information-Centric Transport, Hila Ben Abraham

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

The power of Information-Centric Networking architectures (ICNs) lies in their abstraction for communication --- the request for named data. This abstraction was popularized by the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) as an application-layer abstraction, and was extended by ICNs to also serve as their network-layer abstraction. In recent years, network mechanisms for ICNs, such as scalable name-based forwarding, named-data routing and in-network caching, have been widely explored and researched. However, to the best of our knowledge, the impact of this network abstraction on ICN applications has not been explored or well understood. The motivation of this dissertation is to address this …

Subsurface Mimo: A Beamforming Design In Internet Of Underground Things For Digital Agriculture Applications, Abdul Salam

Faculty Publications

In underground (UG) multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO), the transmit beamforming is used to focus energy in the desired direction. There are three different paths in the underground soil medium through which the waves propagates to reach at the receiver. When the UG receiver receives a desired data stream only from the desired path, then the UG MIMO channel becomes three path (lateral, direct, and reflected) interference channel. Accordingly, the capacity region of the UG MIMO three path interference channel and degrees of freedom (multiplexing gain of this MIMO channel requires careful modeling). Therefore, expressions are required for the degree of …

Mining Semantic Knowledge Graphs To Add Explainability To Black Box Recommender Systems, Mohammed Alshammari, Olfa Nasraoui, Scott Sanders Aug 2019

Mining Semantic Knowledge Graphs To Add Explainability To Black Box Recommender Systems, Mohammed Alshammari, Olfa Nasraoui, Scott Sanders

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Recommender systems are being increasingly used to predict the preferences of users on online platforms and recommend relevant options that help them cope with information overload. In particular, modern model-based collaborative filtering algorithms, such as latent factor models, are considered state-of-the-art in recommendation systems. Unfortunately, these black box systems lack transparency, as they provide little information about the reasoning behind their predictions. White box systems, in contrast, can, by nature, easily generate explanations. However, their predictions are less accurate than sophisticated black box models. Recent research has demonstrated that explanations are an essential component in bringing the powerful predictions of …

An Optimized Encoding Algorithm For Systematic Polar Codes, Xiumin Wang, Zhihong Zhang, Jun Li, Yu Wang, Haiyan Cao, Zhengquan Li, Liang Shan Aug 2019

An Optimized Encoding Algorithm For Systematic Polar Codes, Xiumin Wang, Zhihong Zhang, Jun Li, Yu Wang, Haiyan Cao, Zhengquan Li, Liang Shan

Publications and Research

Many different encoding algorithms for systematic polar codes (SPC) have been introduced since SPC was proposed in 2011. However, the number of the computing units of exclusive OR (XOR) has not been optimized yet. According to an iterative property of the generator matrix and particular lower triangular structure of the matrix, we propose an optimized encoding algorithm (OEA) of SPC that can reduce the number of XOR computing units compared with existing non-recursive algorithms. We also prove that this property of the generator matrix could extend to different code lengths and rates of the polar codes. Through the matrix segmentation …

Low-Rank Sparse Subspace For Spectral Clustering, Xiaofeng Zhu, Shichao Zhang, Yonggang Li, Jilian Zhang, Lifeng Yang, Yue Fang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The current two-step clustering methods separately learn the similarity matrix and conduct k means clustering. Moreover, the similarity matrix is learnt from the original data, which usually contain noise. As a consequence, these clustering methods cannot achieve good clustering results. To address these issues, this paper proposes a new graph clustering methods (namely Low-rank Sparse Subspace clustering (LSS)) to simultaneously learn the similarity matrix and conduct the clustering from the low-dimensional feature space of the original data. Specifically, the proposed LSS integrates the learning of similarity matrix of the original feature space, the learning of similarity matrix of the low-dimensional …

Traditional marketing is shifting to digital marketing enabled by AI and machine learning. Customer consumption behavior has changed from traditional in-store shopping to online shopping (Thiraviyam, 2018). The large volume of transaction and demographic data enables business analytics, AI, and machine learning to analyze and predict customer behavior to improve customer satisfaction and enhance sales (Siau and Wang, 2018). For example, predictive analytics uses different algorithms to predict …

Distributed Edge Bundling For Large Graphs, Yves Tuyishime Aug 2019

Distributed Edge Bundling For Large Graphs, Yves Tuyishime

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Graphs or networks are widely used to depict the relationships between data entities in diverse scientific and engineering applications. A direct visualization (such as node-link diagram) of a graph with a large number of nodes and edges often incurs visual clutter. To address this issue, researchers have developed edge bundling algorithms that visually merge similar edges into curved bundles and can effectively reveal high-level edge patterns with reduced visual clutter. Although the existing edge bundling algorithms achieve appealing results, they are mostly designed for a single machine, and thereby the size of a graph they can handle is limited by …
