Novel Test Fixture For Characterizing Mems Switch Microcontact Reliability And Performance, Protap Mahanta, Farhana Anwar, Ronald A. Coutu Jr.
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) switches, the microcontact is crucial in determining reliability and performance. In the past, actual MEMS devices and atomic force microscopes (AFM)/scanning probe microscopes (SPM)/nanoindentation-based test fixtures have been used to collect relevant microcontact data. In this work, we designed a unique microcontact support structure for improved post-mortem analysis. The effects of contact closure timing on various switching conditions (e.g., cold-switching and hot-switching) was investigated with respect to the test signal. Mechanical contact closing time was found to be approximately 1 us for the contact force ranging from 10–900 μN. On the other hand, for the 1 …

Given the high incidence of dizziness and its frequent misdiagnosis, we aim to create a clinical support system to classify the presence or absence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo with high accuracy and specificity. This paper describes a three-phase study currently underway for classification of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, which includes diagnosis by a specialist in a clinical setting. Patient background information is collected by a survey on an Android tablet and machine learning techniques are applied for classification. Decision trees and wrappers are employed for their ability to provide information about the question set. One goal of the study …

Phonon Order And Reststrahlen Bands Of Polar Vibrations In Crystals With Monoclinic Symmetry, Mathias Schubert, Alyssa Mock, Rafal Korlacki, Vanya Darakchieva
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
In this Rapid Communication, we present the order of the phonon modes and the appearance of the reststrahlen bands for monoclinic symmetry materials with polar lattice vibrations. Phonon modes occur in associated pairs of transverse and longitudinal optical modes, and pairs either belong to inner or outer phonon modes. Inner modes are nested within outer modes. Outer modes cause polarization-dependent reststrahlen bands. Inner modes cause polarization-independent reststrahlen bands. The directional limiting frequencies within the Born-Huang approach are bound to within outer mode frequency regions not occupied by inner mode pairs. Hence, an unusual phonon mode order can occur where both …

Sensors, wearables, mobile and other Internet of Thing (IoT) devices are becoming increasingly integrated in all aspects of our lives. They are capable of collecting massive quantities of data that are typically transmitted to the cloud for processing. However, this results in increased network traffic and latencies. Edge computing has a potential to remedy these challenges by moving computation physically closer to the network edge where data are generated. However, edge computing does not have sufficient resources for complex data analytics tasks. Consequently, this paper investigates merging cloud and edge computing for IoT data analytics and presents a deep learning-based …

The current power grid is no longer a feasible solution due to ever-increasing user demand of electricity, old infrastructure, and reliability issues and thus require transformation to a better grid a.k.a., smart grid (SG). The key features that distinguish SG from the conventional electrical power grid are its capability to perform two-way communication, demand side management, and real time pricing. Despite all these advantages that SG will bring, there are certain issues which are specific to SG communication system. For instance, network management of current SG systems is complex, time consuming, and done manually. Moreover, SG communication (SGC) system is …

Security vetting of Android apps is often performed under tight time constraints (e.g., a few minutes). As such, vetting activities must be performed “at speed”, when an app is submitted for distribution or a device is analyzed for malware. Existing static and dynamic program analysis approaches are not feasible for use in security analysis tools because they require a much longer time to operate than security analysts can afford. There are two factors that limit the performance and efficiency of current analysis approaches. First, existing approaches analyze only one app at a time. Finding security vulnerabilities in collaborative environments such …

Laser ablation in liquid has proven to be a universal and green method to synthesize nanocrystals and fabricate functional nanostructures. This study demonstrates the superiority of femtosecond laser-mediated plasma in enhancing photoredox of metal cations for controllable fabrication of plasmonic nanostructures in liquid. Through employing upstream high energetic plasma during laser-induced microexplosions, single/three-electron photoreduction of metallic cations can readily occur without chemical reductants or capping agents. Experimental evidences demonstrate that this process exhibits higher photon utilization efficiency in yield of colloidal metal nanoparticles than direct irradiation of metallic precursors. Photogenerated hydrated electrons derived from strong ionization of silicon and water …

Manipulation Of Lipss Orientation On Silicon Surfaces Using Orthogonally Polarized Femtosecond Laser Double-Pulse Trains, Wei Liu, Lan Jiang, Weina Han, Jie Hu, Xiaowei Li, Ji Huang, Shenghua Zhan, Yongfeng Lu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) provide an easy and costeffective means of fabricating gratings and have been widely studied in recent decades. To overcome the challenge of orientation controllability, we developed a feasible and efficient method for manipulating the orientation of LIPSS in real time. Specifically, we used orthogonally polarized and equal-energy femtosecond laser (50 fs, 800 nm) double-pulse trains with time delay about 1ps, total peak laser fluence about 1.0 J/cm2, laser repetition frequency at 100 Hz and scanning speed at 150 μm/s to manipulate the LIPSS orientation on silicon surfaces perpendicular to the scanning direction, regardless …

A gallium nitride thin film can be formed on a substrate at a low temperature (e.g., not higher than 600°C .) by applying a laser to resonantly excite molecules of a first precursor that contains nitrogen, in which the laser has a wavelength that is selected to match a vibration mode and/or a vibrational rotational mode of the molecules of the first precursor. A second precursor is provided in which the excited first precursor and the second precursor react to form a nitride that is deposited on the substrate. For example, the second precursor may include gallium, and the nitride …

Fabrication Of Highly Homogeneous And Controllable Nanogratings On Silicon Via Chemical Etching-Assisted Femtosecond Laser Modification, Ji Huang, Lan Jiang, Xiaowei Li, Andong Wang, Zhi Wang, Qingsong Wang, Jie Hu, Liangti Qu, Tianhong Cui, Yongfeng Lu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Femtosecond laser direct writing is widely exploited in surface periodic structures processing. However, this technique still faces challenges in obtaining high surface homogeneity and flexible morphology controllability. In this study, a flexible and efficient approach has been proposed to fabricate highly homogeneous and controllable nanogratings on silicon via chemical etching-assisted femtosecond laser modification. By precisely manipulating the laser-material interaction process, alternating amorphous-crystalline nanofringes are generated when employing femtosecond laser scanning over a Si sample, with almost no material removal. Following auxiliary chemical etching, highly homogeneous nanograting structures are obtained, and the morphology of the nanogratings can be flexibly managed through …

Effect Of Titanium And Zirconium Carbide Interphases On The Thermal Conductivity And Interfacial Heat Transfers In Copper/ Diamond Composite Materials, Clio Azina, Inaki Cornu, Jean-Francois Silvain, Yongfeng Lu, Jean-Luc Battaglia
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Thermal properties of metal matrix composite materials are becoming ever more relevant with the increasing demand for thermally efficient materials. In this work, the thermal conductivity and heat transfers at the interfaces of copper matrix composite materials reinforced with diamond particles (Cu/D) are discussed. The composite materials contain either ZrC or TiC interphases and exhibit, respectively, higher and lower thermal conductivities with respect to their pure Cu/D counterparts. These thermal conductivities are accounted to the presence of strong covalent bonds and increased relative densities. The role of these interphases is also discussed regarding the phonon transmission at the interfaces.

Railyards are one of the most challenging and complex workplace environments in any industry. Railyard workers are constantly surrounded by dangerous moving objects, in a noisy environment where distractions can easily result in accidents or casualties. Throughout the years, yards have been contributing 20–30% of the total accidents that happen in railroads. Monitoring the railyard workspace to keep personnel safe from falls, slips, being struck by large object, etc. and preventing fatal accidents can be particularly challenging due to the sheer number of factors involved, such as the need to protect a large geographical space, the inherent dynamicity of the …

Vertical van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures of 2D crystals with defined interlayer twist are of interest for band-structure engineering via twist moiré superlattice potentials. To date, twist-heterostructures have been realized by micromechanical stacking. Direct synthesis is hindered by the tendency toward equilibrium stacking without interlayer twist. Here, we demonstrate that growing a 2D crystal with fixed azimuthal alignment to the substrate followed by transformation of this intermediate enables a potentially scalable synthesis of twisted heterostructures. Microscopy during growth of ultrathin orthorhombic SnS on trigonal SnS2 shows that vdW epitaxy yields azimuthal order even for non-isotypic 2D crystals. Excess sulfur drives …

Developing A Real-World Vehicle Trip Dataset Through Public Travel Surveys And Applying It To Battery Electric Vehicle Performance Study, Nizar Ali Khemri
Wayne State University Dissertations
Real-world second-by-second vehicle driving cycle data is very important for research and development of the traditional fuel-powered vehicles, the emerging electric vehicles, and the hybrid vehicles. A project solely dedicated to generating such information would be extremely costly and time-consuming. Alternatively, we introduce a method to develop such a database by utilizing two publicly available passenger vehicle travel surveys; the 2004-2006 Puget Sound Regional Commission (PSRC) Travel Survey and the 2011 Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) Travel Survey. The two surveys complement each other – the former is in low time resolution but covers vehicle driving and non-driving operation for over …

Data centers are becoming the main backbone of and centralized repository for all cloud-accessible services in on-demand cloud computing environments. In particular, virtual data centers (VDCs) facilitate the virtualization of all data center resources such as computing, memory, storage, and networking equipment as a single unit. It is necessary to use the data center efficiently to improve its profitability. The essential factor that significantly influences efficiency is the average number of VDC requests serviced by the infrastructure provider, and the optimal allocation of requests improves the acceptance rate. In existing VDC request embedding algorithms, data center performance factors such as …

Recently, sensor and biosensor applications have become widespread and are now significant tools in the biomedical field and other areas. Since quartz tuning fork (QTF) resonance frequency depends on the mass adsorbed to its prongs, it is generally used to measure minor mass change and detect target analyte in picogram levels. This study is undertaken to design and fabricate a sensor device for the measurement of QTF transducers. When QTF sensor studies were investigated, it was found that explanations on the details of instrumentation part were limited, and in addition, there was no compact commercial products. In this study, a …

In this work, the regulation problem is extended to the field of fractional-order linear systems considering the Caputo fractional derivative. The regulation equations are obtained on the basis of the Francis equations. It is also shown that the linear fractional regulator exists at $t=0$ only if the order of the plant is not greater than the order of the reference system.

Active Recall Networks For Multiperspectivity Learning Through Shared Latent Space Optimization, Theus Aspiras, Ruixu Liu, Vijayan K. Asari
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Given that there are numerous amounts of unlabeled data available for usage in training neural networks, it is desirable to implement a neural network architecture and training paradigm to maximize the ability of the latent space representation. Through multiple perspectives of the latent space using adversarial learning and autoencoding, data requirements can be reduced, which improves learning ability across domains. The entire goal of the proposed work is not to train exhaustively, but to train with multiperspectivity. We propose a new neural network architecture called Active Recall Network (ARN) for learning with less labels by optimizing the latent space. This …

IETF 6TiSCH standard aims to create reliable, deterministic, and low-power networks by scheduling bandwidth resources in time and frequency domains. The main emphasis of 6TiSCH protocol is that it creates Internet of things (IoT) networks with a deterministic and controllable delay. However, many of its benefits are tied to the ability of the 6TiSCH scheduler to optimally distribute radio resources among wireless nodes which may not be possible when the number of frequency resources are limited and several other wireless technologies share the same frequency band (e.g., WiFi, Bluetooth and IEEE 802.15.4). Here the integration of a low-complexity directional antenna …

Geographic data are used on a variety of computing devices for many different applications including navigation, tracking, location planning, and marketing. The prevalence of geographic data makes it possible to envision new useful applications. In this paper, we propose using geographic data as a medium for secret communication, or steganography. We develop a method called StegoGIS for hiding messages in geographic coordinates in the well-known binary of fast-moving objects and transmitting them secretly. We show that discovering this secret communication is practically impossible for third parties. We also show that a large amount of secret data can be transmitted this …

Improving Undersampling-Based Ensemble With Rotation Forest For Imbalanced Problem, Huaping Guo, Xiaoyu Diao, Hongbing Liu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
As one of the most challenging and attractive issues in pattern recognition and machine learning, the imbalanced problem has attracted increasing attention. For two-class data, imbalanced data are characterized by the size of one class (majority class) being much larger than that of the other class (minority class), which makes the constructed models focus more on the majority class and ignore or even misclassify the examples of the minority class. The undersampling-based ensemble, which learns individual classifiers from undersampled balanced data, is an effective method to cope with the class-imbalance data. The problem in this method is that the size …

To reduce the increasingly congestion in cities, it is essential for intelligent transportation system (ITS) to accurately forecast the short-term traffic flow to identify the potential congestion sites. In recent years, the emerging deep learning method has been introduced to design traffic flow predictors, such as recurrent neural network (RNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM), which has demonstrated its promising results. In this paper, different from existing work, we study the temporal convolutional network (TCN) and propose a deep learning framework based on TCN model for short-term city-wide traffic forecast to accurately capture the temporal and spatial evolution of traffic …

Development Of Semantic Scene Conversion Model For Image-Based Localization At Night, Dongyoun Kim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Developing an autonomous vehicle navigation system invariant to illumination change is one of the biggest challenges in vision-based localization field due to the fact that the appearance of an image becomes inconsistent under different light conditions even with the same location. In particular, the night scene images have greatest change in appearance compared to the according day scenes. Moreover, the night images do not have enough information in Image-based localization. To deal with illumination change, image conversion methods have been researched. However, these methods could lose the detail of objects and add fake objects into the output images. In this …

In recent years, the use of renewable energy sources is increasing drastically in several sectors, which leads to its role in the automobile industry to charge electric vehicle (EV) batteries. In this paper, a photovoltaic (PV) array-fed off-board battery charging system using a bidirectional interleaved DC-DC converter (BIDC) is proposed for light-weight EVs. This off-board charging system is capable of operating in dual mode, thereby supplying power to the EV battery from the PV array in standstill conditions and driving the DC load by the EV battery during running conditions. This dual mode operation is accomplished by the use of …

In this paper, a control scheme is proposed for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) in a variable speed standalone wind energy conversion system (WECS) with permanent magnet synchronous generator. A MPPT algorithm is designed trying to eliminate the main deficiency of the conventional perturbation and observation (P&O) method, which is the challenge of choosing a proper step size and the unwanted trade-off between accuracy and speed. The designed algorithm properly addresses this drawback and significantly improves the MPPT performance. Another important issue is to ensure fast and accurate tracking of the optimal reference point obtained from the MPPT algorithm and …
