In fact, many countries have been attacked by terrorists using smart drones. …

Geopolitics And The Digital Domain: How Cyberspace Is Impacting International Security, Georgia Wood Apr 2020

Geopolitics And The Digital Domain: How Cyberspace Is Impacting International Security, Georgia Wood

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The digital domain is the emerging environment for which the internet and data connectivity exists. This new domain is challenging the traditional place for geopolitics to exist, and creating new challenges to international relations. The use of cyberweapons through direct cyberattacks, such as the possibility of an attack on the U.S. power grid, or misinformation campaigns, such as the one launched by Russia against the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, can expand the international threat landscape. While these new threats increase, states are widely not prepared to address the new challenges in the digital domain. This paper will use three primary …

Novel Approaches For Evaluating The Performance Of Antenna Arrays For Massive Mimo Systems, Abbas Al-Wahhamy Mar 2020

Novel Approaches For Evaluating The Performance Of Antenna Arrays For Massive Mimo Systems, Abbas Al-Wahhamy

Theses and Dissertations

Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) is a key promising technology for 5G networks that allows a significant increase in spectral and energy efficiency without increasing the spectrum and/or the number of cell sites. However, the computational time and resources required to rigorously analyze the capacity offered by a base station equipped with a large number of antenna elements increases with the increase of the number of antenna elements. A novel approach is presented for modeling large microstrip antenna arrays in base stations of massive MIMO systems. The approach subdivides an M×N array into columns, rows, rectangular, or square subarrays, each consisting …

Publications

Underwater sensor networks (UWSNs) have witnessed significant R&D attention in both academia and industry due to their growing application domains, such as border security, freight via sea or river, natural petroleum production and the fishing industry. Considering the deep underwater-oriented access constraints, energy-centric communication for the lifetime maximization of tiny sensor nodes in UWSNs is one of the key research themes in this domain. Existing literature on green UWSNs are majorly adapted from the existing techniques in traditional wireless sensor network relying on geolocation and the quality of service-centric underwater relay node selection, without paying much attention to the dynamic …

Semantic Segmentation Of Aerial Imagery Using U-Nets, Terence J. Yi Mar 2020

Semantic Segmentation Of Aerial Imagery Using U-Nets, Terence J. Yi

Theses and Dissertations

In situations where global positioning systems are unavailable, alternative methods of localization must be implemented. A potential step to achieving this is semantic segmentation, or the ability for a model to output class labels by pixel. This research aims to utilize datasets of varying spatial resolutions and locations to train a fully convolutional neural network architecture called the U-Net to perform segmentations of aerial images. Variations of the U-Net architecture are implemented and compared to other existing models in order to determine the best in detecting buildings and roads. A final dataset will also be created combining two datasets to …

Interoperable Ads-B Confidentiality, Brandon C. Burfeind Mar 2020

Interoperable Ads-B Confidentiality, Brandon C. Burfeind

Theses and Dissertations

The worldwide air traffic infrastructure is in the late stages of transition from legacy transponder systems to Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) based systems. ADS-B relies on position information from GNSS and requires aircraft to transmit their identification, state, and position. ADS-B promises the availability of high-fidelity air traffic information; however, position and identification data are not secured via authentication or encryption. This lack of security for ADS-B allows non-participants to observe and collect data on both government and private flight activity. This is a proposal for a lightweight, interoperable ADS-B confidentiality protocol which uses existing format preserving encryption …

Techniques To Solve Decision-Making Problems, Dilnoz Tulkunovna Muhamediyeva, Bekmuratov Fayzievich Tulkun

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

Solving decision-making problems in poorly formalized systems only with the help of deterministic and probabilistic methods is insufficient. To do this, it is necessary to widely apply the methods of hybrid intelligent systems and, especially, the methods of “soft” calculations (SoftCalculation, SoftComputing) and the directions of ComputationalIntelligence — intelligent computing technologies that are emerging on this theoretical and methodological base. An immune - fuzzy algorithm for the synthesis of fuzzy inference systems (FIS) is proposed. A two-stage adaptive FIS synthesis algorithm is described. At the first stage, the initial fuzzy parameters are clustered in order to reduce the number of …

The proliferation of mobile devices that support the acceleration of data services (especially smartphones) has resulted in a dramatic increase in mobile traffic. Mobile data also increased exponentially, already exceeding the throughput of the backhaul. To improve spectrum utilization and increase mobile network traffic, in combination with content caching, we study the cooperation between primary and secondary networks via content caching. We consider that the secondary base station assists the primary user by pre-caching some popular primary contents. Thus, the secondary base station can obtain more licensed bandwidth to serve its own user. We mainly focus on the time delay …

Smart Routing: Towards Proactive Fault Handling Of Software-Defined Networks, Ali Malik, Benjamin Aziz, Mo Adda, Chih-Heng Ke

Articles

In recent years, the emerging paradigm of software-defined networking has become a hot and thriving topic in both the industrial and academic sectors. Software-defined networking offers numerous benefits against legacy networking systems by simplifying the process of network management through reducing the cost of network configurations. Currently, data plane fault management is limited to two mechanisms: proactive and reactive. These fault management and recovery techniques are activated only after a failure occurrence and hence packet loss is highly likely to occur. This is due to convergence time where new network paths will need to be allocated in order to …

Determinants Of Startup Funding: The Interaction Between Web Attention And Culture, Jie Ren, Viju Raghupathi, Wullianallur Raghupathi

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Technology empowers entrepreneurs to pursue alternative funding through platforms like crowdfunding. This research explores significant startup funding factors using Crunchbase. Controlling for common factors (acquisition/funding-rounds/IPO), the research uniquely focuses on web attention - the visibility on social media - and its impact on funding. It also examines the moderating influence of startup’s home country culture (individualism/collectivism). Findings show stronger positive impact of web attention on startup funding for collectivist countries. While individualistic investors value personal goals, collectivists value collaborative goals - inclinations that align with crowdfunding behavior. Therefore while increasing web attention, crowdfunding efforts can be targeted towards collectivist countries.

Benefits, Drawbacks, And Risks Of Ai, James M. Donovan

Law Faculty Books and Chapters

The specter of the impact of artificial intelligence [AI] on law and legal education casts a long and uncertain shadow. Its mix of enthusiasm and trepidation can arise from a thin idea of what the label refers to. Four components differentiate AI from even high-end automation: Big data and predictive analytics, deep learning software, cloud computing, and natural language process. From the perspective of the person on the street though, is captured as “the art of creating machines that perform functions that require intelligence when performed by people,” centering on the ability to make independent choices. While that gloss may …

Sla-Aware Routing Strategy For Multi-Tenant Software-Defined Networks, Ali Malik, Ruairí De Fréin Jan 2020

Sla-Aware Routing Strategy For Multi-Tenant Software-Defined Networks, Ali Malik, Ruairí De Fréin

Conference papers

A crucial requirement for the network service provider is to satisfy the Service Level Agreements (SLA) that it has made with its customers. Coexisting network tenants may have agreed different SLAs, and thus, the service provider must be able to provide QoS differentiation in order to meet his contractual commitments. Current one-size-fits-all routing models are not appropriate for all network tenants if their individual SLA requirements are to be efficiently met. We propose a SDN-based multi-cost routing approach which allocates network resources based on a portfolio of tenant SLA, which achieves the goal of accommodating multiple tenants, given their SLAs. …

Publications

Deep learning is increasingly applied to safety-critical application domains such as autonomous cars and medical devices. It is of significant importance to ensure their reliability and robustness. In this paper, we propose DLFuzz, the coverage guided differential adversarial testing framework to guide deep learing systems exposing incorrect behaviors. DLFuzz keeps minutely mutating the input to maximize the neuron coverage and the prediction difference between the original input and the mutated input, without manual labeling effort or cross-referencing oracles from other systems with the same functionality. We also design multiple novel strategies for neuron selection to improve the neuron coverage. The …

Algorithms For Achieving Fault-Tolerance And Ensuring Security In Cloud Computing Systems, Md. Tariqul Islam Jan 2020

Algorithms For Achieving Fault-Tolerance And Ensuring Security In Cloud Computing Systems, Md. Tariqul Islam

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Security and fault tolerance are the two major areas in cloud computing systems that need careful attention for its widespread deployment. Unlike supercomputers, cloud clusters are mostly built on low cost, unreliable, commodity hardware. Therefore, large-scale cloud systems often suffer from performance degradation, service outages, and sometimes node and application failures. On the other hand, the multi-tenant shared architecture, dynamism, heterogeneity, and openness of cloud computing make it susceptible to various security threats and vulnerabilities. In this dissertation, we analyze these problems and propose algorithms for achieving fault tolerance and ensuring security in cloud computing systems.

First, we perform a …
