A Graphical File System Visualization Tool For Operating Systems, Jacob Bundt

Honors Program Theses

Fileshark was developed for the primary purpose of aiding in the teaching of students in file system related courses, particularly at the undergraduate level, by providing a visual representation of often abstract file system ideas. Many teachers find it difficult to teach the file system in detail in a typical operating systems classroom environment due to its abstract nature and the inability to truly observe what is occurring within the file system. Fileshark provides an easy to use interface that can be used by both students and professors to visualize the internal workings of the file system and the processes …

Toward Biologically-Inspired Self-Healing, Resilient Architectures For Digital Instrumentation And Control Systems And Embedded Devices, Shawkat Sabah Khairullah

Theses and Dissertations

Digital Instrumentation and Control (I&C) systems in safety-related applications of next generation industrial automation systems require high levels of resilience against different fault classes. One of the more essential concepts for achieving this goal is the notion of resilient and survivable digital I&C systems. In recent years, self-healing concepts based on biological physiology have received attention for the design of robust digital systems. However, many of these approaches have not been architected from the outset with safety in mind, nor have they been targeted for the automation community where a significant need exists. This dissertation presents a new self-healing digital …

Improving The Performance And Energy Efficiency Of Emerging Memory Systems, Yuhua Guo Jan 2018

Improving The Performance And Energy Efficiency Of Emerging Memory Systems, Yuhua Guo

Theses and Dissertations

Modern main memory is primarily built using dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips. As DRAM chip scales to higher density, there are mainly three problems that impede DRAM scalability and performance improvement. First, DRAM refresh overhead grows from negligible to severe, which limits DRAM scalability and causes performance degradation. Second, although memory capacity has increased dramatically in past decade, memory bandwidth has not kept pace with CPU performance scaling, which has led to the memory wall problem. Third, DRAM dissipates considerable power and has been reported to account for as much as 40% of the total system energy and this …

Implementation Of Cache Attack On Real Information Centric Networking System, Faustina J. Anto Morais

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Network security is an ongoing major problem in today’s Internet world. Even though there have been simulation studies related to denial of service and cache attacks, studies of attacks on real networks are still lacking in the research. In this thesis, the effects of cache attacks in real information-centric networking systems were investigated. Cache attacks were implemented in real networks with different cache sizes and with Least Recently Used, Random and First In First Out algorithms to fill the caches in each node. The attacker hits the cache with unpopular content, making the user request that the results be fetched …

Graphmp: An Efficient Semi-External-Memory Big Graph Processing System On A Single Machine, Peng Sun, Yonggang Wen, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Xiaokui Xiao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent studies showed that single-machine graph processing systems can be as highly competitive as clusterbased approaches on large-scale problems. While several outof-core graph processing systems and computation models have been proposed, the high disk I/O overhead could significantly reduce performance in many practical cases. In this paper, we propose GraphMP to tackle big graph analytics on a single machine. GraphMP achieves low disk I/O overhead with three techniques. First, we design a vertex-centric sliding window (VSW) computation model to avoid reading and writing vertices on disk. Second, we propose a selective scheduling method to skip loading and processing unnecessary edge …

A Study Of Very Short Intermittent Ddos Attacks On The Performance Of Web Services In Clouds, Huasong Shan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks for web applications such as e-commerce are increasing in size, scale, and frequency. The emerging elastic cloud computing cannot defend against ever-evolving new types of DDoS attacks, since they exploit various newly discovered network or system vulnerabilities even in the cloud platform, bypassing not only the state-of-the-art defense mechanisms but also the elasticity mechanisms of cloud computing.

In this dissertation, we focus on a new type of low-volume DDoS attack, Very Short Intermittent DDoS Attacks, which can hurt the performance of web applications deployed in the cloud via transiently saturating the critical bottleneck resource of the …

Improving Large Scale Application Performance Via Data Movement Reduction, Dewan M. Ibtesham Nov 2017

Improving Large Scale Application Performance Via Data Movement Reduction, Dewan M. Ibtesham

Computer Science ETDs

The compute capacity growth in high performance computing (HPC) systems is outperforming improvements in other areas of the system for example, memory capacity, network bandwidth and I/O bandwidth. Therefore, the cost of executing a floating point operation is decreasing at a faster rate than moving that data. This increasing performance gap causes wasted CPU cycles while waiting for slower I/O operations to complete in the memory hierarchy, network, and storage. These bottlenecks decrease application time to solution performance, and increase energy consumption, resulting in system under utilization. In other words, data movement is becoming a key concern for future HPC …

Resource Estimation For Large Scale, Real-Time Image Analysis On Live Video Cameras Worldwide, Caleb Tung, Yung-Hsiang Lu, Anup Mohan

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Thousands of public cameras live-stream an abundance of data to the Internet every day. If analyzed in real-time by computer programs, these cameras could provide unprecedented utility as a global sensory tool. For example, if cameras capture the scene of a fire, a system running image analysis software on their footage in real-time could be programmed to react appropriately (perhaps call firefighters). No such technology has been deployed at large scale because the sheer computing resources needed have yet to be determined. In order to help us build computer systems powerful enough to achieve such lifesaving feats, we developed a …

Gms: Grid-Based Motion Statistics For Fast, Ultra-Robust Feature Correspondence, Jiawang Bian, Wen-Yan Lin, Matsushita Yasuyuki, Sai-Kit Yeung, Tan-Dat Nguyen, Ming-Ming Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Incorporating smoothness constraints into feature matching is known to enable ultra-robust matching. However, such formulations are both complex and slow, making them unsuitable for video applications. This paper proposes GMS (Grid-based Motion Statistics), a simple means of encapsulating motion smoothness as the statistical likelihood of a certain number of matches in a region. GMS enables translation of high match numbers into high match quality. This provides a real-time, ultra-robust correspondence system. Evaluation on videos, with low textures, blurs and wide-baselines show GMS consistently out-performs other real-time matchers and can achieve parity with more sophisticated, much slower techniques.

Conference papers

In this paper, we examine the design and application of a one-time pad encryption system for protecting data stored in the Cloud. Personalising security using a one-time pad generator at the client-end protects data from break-ins, side-channel attacks and backdoors in public encryption algorithms. The one-time pad binary sequences were obtained from modified analogue chaos oscillators initiated by noise and encoded client data locally. Specific ``one-to-Cloud'' storage applications returned control back to the end user but without the key distribution problem normally associated with one-time pad encryption. Development of the prototype was aided by ``Virtual Prototyping'' in the latest version …
