Kentucky, as most other states, has in the past relied on the AASHTO "Barrier Guide'' for guidance in the installation of guardrail. Additional information related to barrier selection and installation was recently published in the form of the AASHTO "Roadside Design Guide. " However, considerable judgement is required for application of this information and it was determined that significant benefit could be derived from development of guidelines representative of conditions in Kentucky. This study was initiated with the general objective of quantifying some of the parameters that govern the stability and rutting characteristics of asphalt-bound materials. Aggregate type and gradation, loading magnitudes and patterns asphalt types and viscosity, are known to affect the stability of an asphalt mixture.

The study was conducted in three phases. The first phase was a study of the effects of large stone gradations on the rutting and fatigue characteristics of an asphalt base mixture. Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report summarizes preliminary site investigations, design criteria and procedures, construction criteria and procedures, and results of initial and final evaluations of an experimental road base utilizing lime kiln dust, fly ash and aggregate. Observed performance has been satisfactory. Compressive strength evaluations indicate exceptional early strength and continued strength gain of the pozzolanic base. Back calculation of specific elastic layer moduli indicate that the moduli of the pozzolanic base material is most likely within a range of 500,000 to 1,000,000 psi.

Based upon observations to date, treated bases enhance overall pavement performance and their use should be continued. It is …

Since 1985, Kentucky has used prefabricated edge drains on many of its major highways. Three brands have been installed to date (Hydraway, Advanedge, Akwadrain). By far, the largest quantity of material used has been Hydraway. In the past year, considerable effort has been expended in observing these materials and their behavior in the field. Problems have developed with the Hydraway material, some of which were documented in Research Report No. UKTRP-88-15 (Evaluation of Hydraway Edge Drain on Pennyrile Parkway). The Division of Planning purchased a Golden River Weigh-in-Motion system. The first assignment was to determine the optimum calibration setting for operating each weigh mat. The second assignment was to determine the sensitivity of the weigh data. The third assignment was to develop appropriate relationships to adjust the dynamic data to equivalent static data.

A series of correlation efforts established the appropriate calibration factor for each weigh mat. Then the mats were installed at a site on I 64 in Shelby County and data were collected for over 1,600 trucks. From these data, it became evident that equations to adjust …

Breaking and Seating has been used extensively to rehabilitate portland cement concrete pavements. In areas where specific vertical tolerances must be maintained, several methods have been used - - tapering of the asphaltic overlay, removal of the portland cement concrete replaced by full depth asphaltic concrete, or milling of the existing pavement and reducing the asphaltic concrete overlay.

This report summarizes performance monitoring activities and evaluation in conjunction with the experimental use of shrinkage compensating bridge deck concrete (Class s). Two bridges of similar design but constructed using Class AA concrete were monitored for comparison purposes. due to the absence of significant shrinkage cracking on the comparison bridge decks and the presence of minor shrinkage cracking on the Class S bridge deck, no conclusions were apparent at this time. Further study may quantify the reduction of shrinkage cracking due to the use of shrinkage compensating concrete in bridge decks.

Breaking and Seating has been extensively utilized to rehabilitate portland cement concrete pavements. Relationships have been developed to determine effective fragment size based on effective modulus of the broken portland cement concrete. Based on this relationship, the effective size of broken segments is on the order of 30-90 inches in the inside lane and 6-15 inches in the outside lane.

Inspections were conducted on bridge modular expansion joints and deck drains to assess their performance. Forty-four modular expansion joints were inspected including 38 Wabo-Maurer and 16 Acme joints. Twenty-three elastomeric dams were also inspected for comparative purposes including 21 Transflex dams and 2 Fei-Span units. The joints were rated using a quantitative subjective rating system developed by Penn DOT.

Both the modular expansion joints and the newer expansion dams were performing satisfactorily. Both types of joints leaked and experienced a number of minor hardware problems. some of the joints may warrant repairs to restore their complete function.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate available foil-back and removable tapes as well as one new construction-zone raised pavement marker and to recommend materials that should be included on approved lists for use by the Kentucky Department of Highways. Tapes were placed on transverse test sections and the reflectivity, durability, and appearance were observed.

Tapes to be included on the approved lists for foil-back and removable tapes were recommended. Tapes manufactured by 3M, Flex-0-Lite, and Swarolite were included on the list of acceptable foil-back tapes. Recommended removable tapes were the 3M and Cataphote removable tapes. The Astra Optics …
