The case histories of Beirut geotechnical practice is an important teaching example concerning deep and specialty foundations. Micro-piles, tie-back retaining structures, and sheet pile-walls are common practices around Beirut. The city, having reached its saturation potential and real estate prices escalating, is moving vertically to optimize investments and toward deeper exploration of underground space. Mathematical models are constructed to describe the behavior of engineering systems in quantitative terms. During conceptualization stage of modelling several valid assumptions have to be made so as to make the model predict the behavior of the system as accurately as possible. The foundation of two bridges was retrofitted using micropiles. The micropiles consisted of hollow core bars installed under limited headroom conditions. Of the total number of micropiles, 180 were installed in submerged sand and 80 were installed in stiff, silty clay. The micropiles were drilled using a lean cement grout which was re-circulated for de-sanding and re-use. Final grout was injected upon completion of drilling to the design tip elevation. The micropiles were subject to a rigorous quality control that included grout quality testing and proof-testing of each production micropile. Although the Kocaeli (Turkey) earthquake was triggered by reactivation of the North Anatolian strike-slip Fault, normal faulting also occurred within the pull-apart basin of Gölcük. Its effect on overlying structures is summarized in this paper. The normal rupture caused maximum vertical displacements of up to 2.5m. Several structures were crossed by the rupture. As expected, many of them either collapsed or were severely damaged. Surprisingly, several structures survived the dislocation with no damage, while in some cases the rupture deviated, “avoiding” the structures. Ralph Peck introduced the concept of using a geotechnical case histories course to teach students problem solving and technical communications skills, beginning around 1956. This course was developed as a professional practice course at the graduate level, intended for civil engineers of diverse backgrounds as well as geoscientists. Students were required to prepare one-page summaries of each case history profiled in the course, a requirement that left an enormous impression on the students. A different approach was employed by the University of California, Berkeley, beginning around 1970. Berkeley offered two graduate courses in the mold of ABET “capstone courses,” graduate …

The importance of vibration problems induced by pile driving is addressed and guidelines for establishing limiting vibration levels with respect to buildings with different foundation conditions are presented. Basic concepts of pile dynamics and stress-wave measurements, which were developed for the determination of driving resistance and bearing capacity of impact-driven piles, provide important information about ground vibration induced by pile penetration. Dynamic hammer properties and geometry as well as the driving process are important for ground vibration emission from the pile. The present paper illustrates the outcome of the monitoring of the consolidation behavior of a soft foundation soil under a large submerged sand embankment. Measurements of settlements and excess pore water pressures showed a good agreement with predictions evaluated using the large strain consolidation theory. Soft soil improvement by means of deep mixing has been optimized. Moreover, the principles and developments of underwater geosynthetics applications are discussed.

Construction of a new building (NB) affects existing adjacent old buildings (OB) during pit excavation, piling, footing and NB erection. Two relevant history cases are described. In the first one, the graphs of OB settlements versus distance from the pit are given for the period of pit excavation and the total settlements for the period of NB erection. The second case gives the family of OB settlement time-related graphs versus distance from the pit, in which these settlements were caused by piling operations.

Ground improvements often aim to reduce settlement risks for foundations and this requires reliable methods of prediction. Current approaches are based on empirical procedures and methods developed over 30 years ago. This has resulted historically in designs and installations of unnecessarily sophisticated foundations. In addition many developments now encountered by ground improvement contractors involve previously developed or ‘brownfield’ sites made up of heterogeneous and variable made ground. Methods to predict settlements traditionally use destructive and invasive approaches such as SPT or CPT that can be insensitive to time dependent changes, which often occur when brownfield sites are improved. The paper studies the effect of large slope movements on foundations through case histories. More than 30 well-documented case histories of damaged buildings near the tip of slopes due to excessive movement caused by either heavy rain or earthquakes were collected. The case histories showed that a critical factor affecting the level of damage of buildings, is the coefficient Ι, that is defined as the ratio of the width below the foundation that settles by the total width of the foundation: (a) When Ι < 0.2, collapse does not occur, even if settlement is very large, (b). When 0.2 < Ι < 1.0, the level of damage depends both on settlement and the factor l. (c) When Ι=1, buildings may not collapse, even if the settlement is very large, about 1m, but damage and rotation may be high. The above hold regardless of the cause of the slide: heavy rain or earthquake.

In this paper two case histories are addressed. The first case history describes the underpinning and reinforcement of huge retaining walls due to the crossing of the old Rossio railway station building (1886) by an underground gallery (for the Lisbon Metro). A careful study was performed for this station in order to avoid unacceptable damages. These walls sustain an embankment on which the railway platforms were built. The second case history deals with the stabilization works of a landslide in Portugal. The conventional building frame analysis is carried out assuming unyielding supports and ignoring the interactive response of supporting soil media. In fact, the building frame and its foundation along with the soil mass on which it rests together constitute a single integral compatible structural unit to resist the loads. A proper idealization of the building frame-foundation-soil system is thus needed for accessing the realistic and more accurate analysis. Near-surface groundwater levels and high flood levels associated with flooding events impose significant hydrostatic forces on subterranean parking structures in Florida. Unique geologic conditions and the associated high hydraulic conductivities of the subsurface materials have precluded the use of conventional underdrain systems to provide hydrostatic relief. The construction of the bridge near Pöchlarn over Danube, in Austria was begun 1998 and completed in 2002. The four middle piers of the bridge consist of sink caissons made of pre-cast reinforced concrete elements. Each caisson is founded on 18 bored piles of 1.2 m diameter. In a first step, two pilot piles of about 40 m length are installed for each caisson. After the pilot piles were completed, an accident happened in April 1999.
