The effects of liquefaction on deep foundations are very damaging and costly, and they keep recurring in many earthquakes. The first part of the paper reviews the field experience of deep foundations affected by liquefaction during earthquakes in the last few decades, as well as the main lessons learned. The second part of the paper presents results of physical modeling of deep foundations in the presence of liquefaction conducted mostly in the U.S. and Japan in the 1990’s, with emphasis on the work done by the authors and others at the 100 g-ton RPI centrifuge. In this paper, a simplified approach based on spline semi-analytical method is proposed for dynamic response analysis of visco-elastic layered half-space foundation. For varied geometrical and physical properties, the compliance function of layered non-homogeneous foundation is studied. Then an efficient and reliable numerical procedure for back-calculating material properties of pavement through the data measured from in-situ Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) tests is presented. The simulation results for in-situ data show that the proposed methodology is workable and applicable.

An exact analytical method for the interaction analysis of a fully coupled soil-pile-structure system under seismic excitation is investigated in this paper. Only horizontal shaking induced by harmonic SH waves was considered. The soil mass, pile and building were all considered as elastic with hysteretic type damping. Geometrically, the soil is modeled as an elastic isotropic homogeneous continuum, and both pile and structures are simplified as beam models. The structure and piles are coupled through a rigid foundation at the ground level. Buildings of various heights in Hong Kong designed to withstand wind load were analyzed using the present model. …

This communication proposes a count mode of a rigid foundation massif frequencies, relaxing on a homogeneous soil, semi-infinite having an elastic linear behavior. Development of a simple and efficient FEM procedure for the solution directly in the time domain of SSI problems is the main issue. During the 1995 Kobe earthquake widespread liquefaction occurred in fill deposits of man-made islands in the port area of Kobe. The liquefaction of thick fill deposits resulted in extensive sand boils, large lateral movement and settlement of the ground. A number of piles has been found damaged or collapsed due to the excessive ground response as above. A well-controlled test was carried out on a Leighton Buzzard sand-shallow foundation system by means of the six-degree-of-freedom shaking table available at the University of Bristol. The foundation consists of a concrete block located into a flexible shear-stack (Taylor et al., 1994) filled up to 1.00 m with the sand. Assessment of the response of a laterally loaded pile group based on soil-pile interaction is presented in this paper. The behavior of a pile group in uniform and layered soil (sand and/or clay) is predicted based on the strain wedge (SW) model approach that has been developed to predict the response of a flexible pile under lateral loading. A modelling technique of the cross-sections of underground structures based on the combination of modal shapes by response spectra is developed and calibrated according to the vertically propagating shear-wave model. Using the developed technique, the influence of several parameters in the flexibility index (ground-structure relative stiffness) were studied. To point out a few practical implications and simplifications introduced in the model, essentially related to the material behaviour adopted, four cases were studied in detail.
