Earthquake shaking causes the pore water pressure inside the soil mass to increase rabidly within a short period of time as seconds. As a result, the shear strength of the soil could be reduced significantly. The reduction in the shear strength will increase gradually as the shaking continues due to the gradual increase in the buildup of the excess pore water pressure. At a certain level of shaking, the soil mass will liquefy and could be considered as a viscous fluid. Recent earthquakes have highlighted many seismic hazard concerns for western U.S. ports. Port waterfront structures are commonly constructed utilizing pile-supported wharves in combination with rock dike structures retaining a hydraulically placed backfill. Seismic damage is generally attributed to weak soils that are often prevalent in the marine environment (e.g. liquefiable sands, sensitive cohesive soils). In response to past damage, many ports are instigating soil improvement strategies to eliminate or minimize potential occurrences of liquefaction and to increase the strength of cohesive soils. The design of a seismically resilient wharf requires an understanding of its performance during design level earthquakes. Due …

Soils and rocks are characterized by their highly nonlinear behaviors. This makes it very difficult to ensure similarity between model and prototype for dynamic model tests of geotechnical structures. In reality, a great number of such tests were carried out qualitatively, and valuable information was missed. Based on fairly long time practice and experience of performing dynamic model tests, we get some new ideas to establish similarity relationships between model and real earth structures. A field liquefaction test was conducted in Delta, B.C., Canada. The target layer was a loose sandy silt between the 10 and 12 m depth. The test layer was instrumented with two triaxial accelerometers, dynamic and static pore pressure transducers, and Sondex tubes to measure vertical ground strain. An array of boreholes was drilled around the instrument cluster and charged with explosives. Delays were introduced to the detonation sequence in order to generate multiple blast pulses. The cyclic loading from the blasting generated a series of shear and compressive strain pulses. We consider that shear strain dominates residual pore pressure …

The aim of this presentation is to examine the relationship of the equivalent homogeneous shear moduli used in impedance models with stresses under the footing, through the use of scaled models in the centrifuge and an impact loading. The analysis of time and frequency vertical responses of footings reveals that reflections on the boundaries are negligible. The frequency response of a series of circular and square footings is shown to be rather easily-fitted with Wolf’s models for foundations on an infinite half-space with reasonably consistent parameters for masses, damping and shear moduli. The Chi-Chi earthquake caused severe damage of many buildings primarily due to surface faulting and ground shaking. It has been reported that about 10,000 buildings collapsed and 8000 buildings suffered varying degrees of damage. The observed damage to buildings resulted from many factors that include ground movement, acceleration, design code, and construction quality. The damage to buildings near the fault was attributed primarily to the ground movement. This paper presents some experience gathered during the implementation of soil improvement in founding of a residential-business complex located in seismically prone area. The previously performed field and laboratory geomechanical tests proved that the geotechnical medium of the location was characterized by a high heterogeneity of soil materials with predominant presence of layers of low strength-deformability characteristics. A high underground water level and layers of fine-grained uniform sands susceptible to dynamic instability under seismic effects were observed. The Missouri Department of Transportation initiated a study of that segment of Route US 60 that has been officially designated as “emergency vehicle priority access”. The objectives were to establish a current subsurface and earthquake design geographic information systems (GIS) database for the designated US 60 corridor, and to conduct detailed earthquake assessments at two critical bridge sites along US 60. Databases have been established for current subsurface and earthquake data for the US Route 60 corridor in Butler, Stoddard and New Madrid Counties. In the years following the Irpinia earthquake (1980), the old town of Bisaccia, located on a conglomerate hill overlaying a thick clay formation, experienced a slow subsidence revealed by topographic measurements. The paper summarizes the results of the numerical simulations of the effects of the Irpinia earthquake on the Bisaccia hill. The input data for the analyses were the acceleration records of the seismic event at the site and the geotechnical characterization obtained by dynamic and cyclic torsional tests on undisturbed clay shales. Success Dam, primarily a flood control and water conservation structure owned and operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers, lies in Seismic Zone 3. During construction of the dam, the impervious core trench was excavated to either weathered bedrock or older alluvium. However, the pervious outer zones of the embankment were constructed on existing in-situ materials, including recent alluvium, that were only minimally prepared. The surface and downhole accelerations records of “Central de Abasto Oficinas (CAO)” array at Mexico City, have been analyzed to determine the soil stiffness as a function of shear strain amplitude. The 09/10/95 seismic event (NS component) has been used for this purpose. The shear stress-strain histories have been evaluated directly from the field downhole acceleration records, employing a technique of system identification, and used to obtain the variation of shear modulus with shear strain amplitude. A seismic event of moment magnitude 7.0 struck the central region of Mexico on June 15, 1999 at 15:41 hrs (local time) between the states of Puebla and Oaxaca. The epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 20 km to the south-southeast of the town of Tehuacán, Puebla and 55 km to the northeast of Huajuapan de León, Oaxaca. In this study, the behavior of reclaimed soils including the effects of excess pore water pressure and the loss of strength under dynamic loads or earthquakes are investigated and simulated. The constitutive model based on the disturbed state concept (DSC) is introduced and DSC-DYN2D program is utilized in a numerical analysis. In the laboratory test, quasi-static and cyclic triaxial tests were carried out to determine parameters for the numerical analysis. On August 3rd, 1993, a sequence of earthquakes began in the central part of the Gulf of Aqaba, northern Red Sea at the Aragonese Deep. The largest event (MD = 5.5) on August 3rd had an origin time of 12:42:43.22 GMT, a latitude of 28.628° N and longitude 34.644° E. This event was followed by more than 15000 events greater than 2 magnitude with some felt earthquakes. On the same spot, another sequence of earthquakes began late 1995. An earthquake of September 7, 1999 (M5.9) has occurred in the Athens (Attika) area and was felt in almost all central Greece. The earthquake caused a lot of damage and extensive loss of life. The most damaged region is located within a distance of 10 km from the epicenter and numerous modem buildings and industrial facilities collapsed. The accelerograms, which have been recorded during the main event, are processed and compared with the empirical predictive relations proposed for Greece. This paper describes the performance of pile foundations in liquefied soils. Two different aspects of pile response are considered, seismic response to earthquake shaking and response to lateral spreading when the liquefied ground is sloping. The case histories show that piles can be designed economically to resist large lateral displacements and that most of the reported examples of damage from lateral spreading involve weak piles with little reinforcement which were installed to control vertical settlements and were not designed to be moment resistant. On September 21, 1999, Taiwan was struck by an earthquake, called Chi-Chi earthquake, one of the largest in 100 years. The epicenter was located 12.5 km west of the Sun Moon Lake (Northern Latitude 23.85°) Eastern Longitude 120.78°), with focal depth of 8 km, and magnitude of Mw=7.6 (USGS). This earthquake caused heavy casualties and severe property damages around central Taiwan. It was found that this earthquake resulted in sand boiling, differential settlement on the ground and lateral spreading around part of the Maolou River bank in Nantou City. Due to the absence of federal criteria, seismic design and performance criteria for mixed and hazardous waste landfills are generally developed on a project-specific basis, supplemented by state and project-specific standards. In developing project-specific criteria, the federal Subtitle D standards for seismic design of municipal solid waste landfills are often used as a minimum standard for mixed and hazardous waste facilities. Seismic performance standards are also usually developed on a project-specific basis, employing either a “withstand without harmful discharge” or a “withstand without damage” performance standard, depending on the certainty of continuing aftercare. The earthquake that hit Athens, Greece on September 7, 1999 was an unexpected disaster. It originated from a previously unknown seismotectonic structure, at about 18 km to the west of the historical center, and left behind 143 casualties, about 100,000 homeless and 100 totally collapsed buildings. On the other hand, it provided a number of reliable strong motion recordings and well-defined patterns of damage at sites with known geological and geotechnical conditions. Evaluation of this information shows that the very stiff soils of the Athens basin amplified seismic ground motion by an average of 40% compared to nearby outcropping soft …
