Comparison Between Finite Element Predictions And Results From Dynamic Centrifuge Tests On Tilting Gravity Wall Retaining Dry Sand, A. S. Al-Homoud, R. V. Whitman

An analytical model is developed to analyze the seismic response of gravity walls retaining and founded on dry sand, with special emphasis on tilting behavior. A well verified two-dimensional finite element code is used for this purpose. The analytical model is verified comparing predictions to results from three dynamic centrifuge tests, with satisfactory agreement. Moreover, sensitivity analyses are carried out for one of the centrifuge test conditions to understand how the results would change if the boundary conditions and rotational stiffness of the wall were changed.

Earthquakes have caused much damage to fill type dams. Research into earthquake damage has contributed to the study of earthquake resistance of dams. However damage to fill dams occurred almost only to small scale earth dams, especially the few cases of heavy damage. This report describes the damage and performance of fill dams more than 15m-high during earthquakes, drawn from literature, data, and field surveys. The results indicate that even stronger earthquakes than the design earthquake intensity did not cause heavy damage to large well-constructed modern dams. Ground shaking during the Lorna Prieta earthquake of 17 October 1989 caused permanent lateral and vertical displacements of a steep hillside in San Francisco, California. These displacements damaged 36 residences along the top of the hillside. Subsequent exploration and analyses indicated the hillside is composed of loose to medium-dense Dune sand that is marginally stable under static conditions, but highly susceptible to ·movements during ground shaking caused by earthquakes. A retaining system consisting of a combination of drilled soldier piles and permanent tiebacks was designed and constructed to mitigate the potential for future seismically induced slope movement. The ground motion is caused by vibration propagation due to moving vehicles. Ground vibration recorded at a distance from a busy roadway or railway is analyzed assuming it to be a random and statistically stationary function of time. The soil media are characterized as the visco- elastic halfspace. The analytical method for predicting ground vibration has been described. The spectral density of ground vibration for a particular case was calculated and the prediction is validated by experimental measurement.

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the failure mechanism and how workers died due to trench failures with close examination of the situations surrounding these accidents. We carried out a statistical analysis of various factors obtained from fatal accident data which were reported by the Labour Standard Office to the Ministry of Labour. This examination revealed some important characteristics of fatal accidents due to trench failures.

This paper describes in detail a prediction about the responses of the soil and the RC diaphragm wall of a deep excavation in Taipei. The 21.8 m excavation was the deepest at the time, and it served as a good basis for testing previous back analysis results. As instrumentation records became available, updates were made and were passed to the contractor for the construction control purpose. The prediction was considered as a success.

Construction of the US22/SR7 interchange in Steubenville, OH resulted in the need to excavate the toe of the steep 350 ft. high slope overlooking the Ohio River. To maintain the stability of the slope, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) chose to construct a 4 tier, 130- ft. high, 2,200 ft. long tieback anchor retaining wall. During the design phase, it became apparent that reductions in both the tieback loading and cost could be realized by lowering the groundwater levels in the hillside. Construction of a 23m wide, 57m high, and 210m long underground power house cavern is in progress as a part of the multi-purpose Sardar Sarovar Project in India. The rock mass around the cavern is basalt which is intruded by a number of dolerite dykes. Storage tanks for a wastewater treatment plant were stage-loaded on weak compressible fine-grained soils. The in situ silt and sand layers/pockets present in the fine-grained soils were theorized to create sufficient drainage paths, so that the use of sand or wick drains were not required. Although the silt and sand layers/pockets were found to be discontinuous, "hydraulic fracturing" was expected to develop continuous drainage paths. A new Combined Sewage Overflow (CSO) basin was constructed in Saginaw, Michigan. The project required an 8.5 foot (2.6 m) diameter connecting sewer to be constructed under a 12 foot (3.7 m) high stockpile of spoil from the excavation for basin. The soil profile at the site contained a 32 foot (9 .8 m) thick layer of compressible organic silt. Since the weight of the stockpile was anticipated to cause settlement of the sewer, a surcharge was placed to preconsolidate the organic silt prior to construction of the sewer. Stabilizing sand-filled solution chimneys in karst terrain for the construction of sanitary landfills is challenging for geotechnical engineers. A ground water contamination assessment conducted at a sanitary landfill in north central Florida indicated that landfill leachate was contaminating the Floridian Aquifer. To expand the landfill, the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation (FDER) required that a liner system be constructed and that stringent landfill subgrade preparation be performed to minimize the potential for sinkhole formation and subsequent damage to the liner system. Two of the caissons supporting the 26-story IBM office building were instrumented to evaluate the load transfer mechanism from caissons to the surrounding soil and rock. These drilled shafts extended through loose alluvial stratum, a stratum of dense sands and silts, a disintegrated rock stratum, and were founded in the underlying Amphibolite bedrock. Evaluation of mobilized skin friction and end bearing for one of the caissons are presented in this study. Instrumentation consisted of vibrating wire total load cells and embedded strain gauges. The paper presents the foundation behaviour of a 146-m telecommunications tower situated near Verona in Italy, with foundation soils characterized as a thick deposit of alluvial gravels and sands. In order to limit total and differential settlements of the tower it was decided to improve the foundation soil with jet-grouting columns. Predictions on the behaviour of the structure and the foundation soil were performed with an axisymmetric finite-element model adopting an elastic linear constitutive law. This error led to unnecessary and costly remedial measures such as Piling for the Phase ll Building which further aggravated the problem. The heaving was caused by a seemingly innocent decision during the construction stage to use Slag from a steel mill as the base course material. Supplemental geotechnical investigations were conducted on two Detroit area projects with the purpose of optimizing design criteria for proposed drilled pier foundations. For both projects, the major effort involved the formulation, implementation and interpretation of a load test using an Osterberg load cell rather than conventional dead weight or reaction piers. Load and settlement trends were monitored with a series of strain gauges and telltales. Field data are presented in graphical form to illustrate the results of the load tests.

The 1985 Mexico City earthquake and the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake provided well-documented evidence of the effect of local ground conditions on site response and damage patterns. Deep soft clay deposits, in particular, were often cited as the "culprit" of amplified ground motions. Building damage statistics from the 1988 Armenia earthquake are presented and discussed. These statistics are correlated to the local soil profiles in the two major cities of Leninakan and Kirovakan. The soil amplification effects on building damage during this earthquake are investigated. One-dimensional site response analysis results and valley effects are presented to explain the extent and pattern of damage in the two cities.

Negative skin friction behavior of pile foundations is described for conditions of pile usage in the USA. Methods of determining downdrag load and pile resistance to downdrag are explained. Other factors entering into design are discussed such as pile load testing and analysis, pile structural strength, factors of safety, pile drivability, and reduction of downdrag loads. Observations from seven unpublished negative skin friction failures are used for illustration.

The paper outlines the recorded response to numerous earthquakes of the pile foundation, the supporting soil, and the superstructure of the main pier of a road bridge. The records include free-field accelerograms at the ground surface and the base of the alluvial deposit, accelerograms on the footing and the superstructure, and the bending and axial strain histories at several depths along two of the sixty-four piles. Recently developed methods of seismic analysis are used in interpreting the recorded data. Extensive comparisons are made between theory and measurements.
