Analysis Of Small Pipe Piles Using The Field Vane, G. A. Miller, A. J. Lutenegger
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Results of axial compressive load tests on three small diameter pipe piles driven in a varved clay deposit are presented. Predictions of the axial pile capacity were made using the a-method originally proposed by Tomlinson (1957, 1971) and incorporating undrained strength profiles determined with the field vane. Predicted and measured capacities are compared and discussed in light of the various factors which can affect the outcome such as vane geometry, vane testing procedure and interpretation, pile load testing conditions, and empirical relationships incorporated in predictions.

The paper describes tests on rigid square pads at the UK national soft clay research site at Bothkennar, Scotland. The work was performed as a low cost adjunct to the instrumented pile research described by Lehane and Jardine (1992). Its aims were to investigate (i} bearing capacity, (ii) load-displacement response to short and long term loading, (iii) the applicability of relevant theories and (iv) relationships between soil properties determined in-situ and those measured in high quality laboratory tests.

Results of lateral load tests on four drilled shafts installed in stiff cohesive soil are presented. Predictions of the load/displacement behavior were made using p-y curves generated from the results of Prebored Pressuremeter and Dilatometer Tests. A new method to develop p-y curves from the DMT is presented and discussed.

Design and construction procedures that were implemented for the installation of caisson foundations to support cellular telephone monopoles at fifteen sites throughout metropolitan New York are presented herein. Subsurface investigation procedures, development of geotechnical design criteria, methods of structural analysis and caisson design, and actual construction installation of the caissons have been provided along with a comparison of soil conditions and their impact on design and construction of the caissons.

A kind of bored pile with large diameter is being used in civil engineering in China. The maximum length in earth of the pile is greater than 100 m. This pile may be built in rock. In the paper, the constructing methods of the bored pile foundation of a bridge and a grade separation are described. Relating the result with its cause, the failure of the bored pile in construction, the cause of the failure and the treatment methods are related.

In this study, pore pressure response due to pile driving has been observed in the field. Cavity Expansion theory using critical state parameters of the soil has been used to predict the trend of the pore pressure development and dissipation. Parametric study has been carried out to know the sensitivity of various parameters on the predicted results. A comparison has been made between the predicted and observed results.

The interaction between soil and various pile types is of interest because it depends not only on the shear strength characteristics of the soil, but also on the pile dimensions, shape, and installation method, and on time after pile installation. This paper presents load test results from three types of displacement piles installed at the same site. The results obtained from the tests are compared with theoretical estimates. The computed values of soil-pile adhesion, back-calculated from the load tests, are discussed and compared with values found in the literature. The paper spotlights the dynamics of rockfalls and debrisflows in Sri Lanka in the backdrop of some recent examples and discusses the appropriateness of simple energy dissipation systems in situations where source of rockfall is either intractable or difficult to arrest. The question of runout of rockfalls usually significant in the assessment of their damage potential is also discussed and importance of such estimate is highlighted in the context of landslide hazard zonation mapping.

A landslide in colluvium near Grafton, West Virginia was evaluated for cause and remediation. Monitoring was conducted for 15 months to observe further movements prior to remediation. The observed failure surface, slide geometry and groundwater conditions were used to back-solution for an effective residual friction angle ( φr’) . The φr’ was found to agree well with index property correlations cited in the literature. Slope failure resulted from excessive pore water pressures due to seasonably high groundwater levels. The remediation of an inactive uranium mill tailings pile at the town of Andujar (Spain) has provided an opportunity to investigate the settlement characteristics of hydraulically-deposited uranium mill tailings. A test embankment was constructed on top of the existing tailings deposit and total stresses, settlements and pore pressures were measured. Settlements and pore pressure data were compared with the results obtained using an elastoplastic numerical model which allows the simulation of two dimensional consolidation processes. Backcalculated consolidation parameters were derived to provide agreement between the calculated and measured settlements and pore pressures. These parameters could then be used to predict …

The failure of the outer slope of one of the paddocks of a tailings dam, resulted in a significant decrease in the area available for tailings deposition. Overloading of the remaining five paddocks resulted. To maintain the stability of the existing dam whilst construction of new disposal facilities was in progress, three techniques were investigated; horizontal, push-in drains at the dam toe, a rock buttress around the operational paddocks, and vertical de-watering wells installed on the first terrace, or ‘step-back’ of the dam. Two geotechnical site investigations using state-of-the-art equipment for insitu testing have been made of a single tailing pond. The two separate investigations were made at an interval of approximately three years between studies. Each investigation included such tests as piezocone, self-boring pressuremeter, field vane shear, and standard penetration tests. The purpose of these tests was to establish various strength and phreatic characteristics of the tails in the deposit for use as input design parameters in the proposed upstream embankment expansion. This data may also be used to show a time-based consolidation study of a fully-drained, active tailing deposit. As tests …
