Comprehensive Investigation Of Using Tire-Derived Aggregate In Chip Seal Subjected To Various Traffic And Environmental Conditions, Alireza Pourhassan
Comprehensive Investigation Of Using Tire-Derived Aggregate In Chip Seal Subjected To Various Traffic And Environmental Conditions, Alireza Pourhassan
Doctoral Dissertations
"Chip seal is one of the most cost- and performance-effective pavement preservation treatments commonly used in the United States. Using crumb rubber obtained from scrap tires as a partial or full replacement for mineral aggregate has been proposed as a sustainable solution to reduce the negative environmental impacts of scrap tire accumulation and excessive consumption of natural resources. However, there was no data available regarding the performance of rubberized chip seal under traffic loads and environmental conditions. An extensive study using laboratory specimens and conditioning as well as field implementation and assessments were conducted to bridge this gap. Different traffic …
Low-Shrinkage Fiber-Reinforced Concrete For Infrastructure Construction And Rehabilitation, Jingjie Wei
Low-Shrinkage Fiber-Reinforced Concrete For Infrastructure Construction And Rehabilitation, Jingjie Wei
Doctoral Dissertations
"The aim of this study is to develop two classes of low-shrinkage high-performance concrete (HPC): fiber-reinforced super workable concrete (FR-SWC) for infrastructure construction and fiber-reinforced self-consolidating concrete (FR-SCC) for repair applications. HPC with excess content of shrinkage mitigation materials (SMMs), including shrinkage-reducing admixture (SRA), superabsorbent polymer (SAP), and expansive agent (EA) has a detrimental effect on mechanical performance. These classes of HPC were optimized to reduce shrinkage, enhance mechanical properties, and improve durability. The effect of fiber type (macro synthetic fiber, MSF; 5D steel fiber, 5D; 80% 3D + 20% short steel fibers; STST), SMMs, and plastic viscosity on bond …
Investigation Of Wide Beam And Interfacial Shear Transfer In Reinforced Concrete Structures, Nikkolas Edgmond
Investigation Of Wide Beam And Interfacial Shear Transfer In Reinforced Concrete Structures, Nikkolas Edgmond
Doctoral Dissertations
"The use of reinforced concrete (RC) allows for unique designs of structural elements and connections because of the ability to vary the geometry and reinforcement detailing with ease. However, this freedom in the design process can lead to specialized conditions that have not been extensively studied by means of experimental testing. This is especially true for components or regions of components that are subjected to high shear loads, which are susceptible to undesirable and brittle failures. While many studies have been conducted to investigate the shear behavior of RC structural members and components to determine the critical design parameters, these …
Development Of Erosion Functions For Micp-Treated Beach Sand, Saeed Booshi
Development Of Erosion Functions For Micp-Treated Beach Sand, Saeed Booshi
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the effectiveness of microbially-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) using the recently introduced bioslurry treatment method via surface percolation. To simulate realistic water forcing conditions, a piston-style erosion rate testing apparatus, specifically the Florida Department of Transportation Sediment Erosion Rate Flume, was used. Initial tests conducted at a high shear stress of 42 Pa revealed that a combination of 15% bioslurry and 85% cementation solution exhibited the strongest erosion resistance when compared to other ratios between bioslurry and cementation solution. Subsequent experiments focused on separating the specimen into a "loose" part and a “surface crust,” with shear stresses …
Laboratory Measurements Of Wave Transmission Through Oyster-Based Low Crested Breakwaters, Michael Andrew Roster
Laboratory Measurements Of Wave Transmission Through Oyster-Based Low Crested Breakwaters, Michael Andrew Roster
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Pervious Oyster Shell Habitats (POSH) are novel living shoreline components that were recently developed and deployed along several shorelines in northeast Florida. POSH units are designed to provide a breakwater using only recycled eastern oyster shell and Portland cement. However, the hydrodynamic performance of these unique structures had never been tested, so it was unclear how they affected wave energy. During this study, a series of laboratory experiments were conducted to compare wave attenuation from POSH units to wave attenuation from geometrically similar and commercially available Reef BallsTM (specifically, the OysterBreak series of units). Experiments included a range of …
Spatial Equity In Accessing Critical Facilities During Hurricanes, Pooya Komeilian
Spatial Equity In Accessing Critical Facilities During Hurricanes, Pooya Komeilian
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Florida encounters multiple natural disasters every year, making evacuation a critical mitigation plan when severe impacts are predicted. Evacuation is a complex procedure that involves everything from household decision-making to large-scale traffic network analysis. It also addresses logistical issues, such as transporting impacted people to shelters or medical centers. Access to shelters, gas stations, and lodgings is of utmost importance, as numerous studies and surveys have shown that some people prefer not to evacuate, even if they perceive the disaster risk to be very high.
Based on this, the present study follows two phases to address gaps in evacuation studies. …
Factors Influencing Household Travel Behavior And Trip Distances In Florida: A Rural Vs. Urban Perspective, Kadeem Lafargue
Factors Influencing Household Travel Behavior And Trip Distances In Florida: A Rural Vs. Urban Perspective, Kadeem Lafargue
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates disparities in travel behaviors between rural and urban populations in the United States, with a specific focus on Florida. Leveraging data from the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS), the study examines demographic factors such as age, income, and household size, and their influence on travel patterns. By employing statistical methods including Poisson and negative binomial regression models, the research explores two key variables: the frequency of trips made per day and the average trip distance in miles. These models are particularly effective in handling overdispersion in count data, ensuring a robust analysis of travel behaviors across …
Analysis Of Shoreline Erosion At Cumberland Island Using Advanced Circulation (Adcirc) Modeling, Christopher Harrigan
Analysis Of Shoreline Erosion At Cumberland Island Using Advanced Circulation (Adcirc) Modeling, Christopher Harrigan
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates shoreline erosion at Brickhill Bluff along the Brickhill River in Cumberland Island National Seashore using ADCIRC. Two scenarios were modeled during this research: bed stresses during regular tidal cycles and bed stresses during worst-case storm (i.e., hurricane) conditions. Velocities from these models were used to compute bed shear stresses and these stresses were compared to site’s sediment critical shear stress. Results appear to show that a meander in the Brickhill River causes relatively high (i.e., on the order of 0.27 /2 ) shear stresses during regular tidal cycles and even higher (i.e., on the order of …
An Enhanced Evaluation Of Bioslurry For Use In Coastal Erosion Mitigation, Megan Elizabeth Dunton
An Enhanced Evaluation Of Bioslurry For Use In Coastal Erosion Mitigation, Megan Elizabeth Dunton
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This paper discusses the treatment of Florida beach sand by surface percolating Bioslurry, a microbially-induced calcite precipitation (MICP) variant that was developed and refined in recent years. Researchers examined how variations in pore volume and surface area affected the cemented depth of soil treated via surface percolation. Results suggested that while the pore volume is an important factor that governs cementation in soil treated via surface percolation, it does not appear to be the only controlling factor and treatment volume per unit surface area is another important factor to consider when treating soil with Bioslurry using surface percolation. The implications …
Simulation Of Wave Propagation In Granular Particles Using A Discrete Element Model, Syed Tahmid Hussan
Simulation Of Wave Propagation In Granular Particles Using A Discrete Element Model, Syed Tahmid Hussan
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The understanding of Bender Element mechanism and utilization of Particle Flow Code (PFC) to simulate the seismic wave behavior is important to test the dynamic behavior of soil particles. Both discrete and finite element methods can be used to simulate wave behavior. However, Discrete Element Method (DEM) is mostly suitable, as the micro scaled soil particle cannot be fully considered as continuous specimen like a piece of rod or aluminum. Recently DEM has been widely used to study mechanical properties of soils at particle level considering the particles as balls. This study represents a comparative analysis of Voigt and Best …
Understanding The Role Of Recalcitrant Organic Phosphorus Mineralization On Harmful Algal Blooms At The Sediment-Water Interface Of Freshwater System, Tasnuva Farnaz
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Over the past few decades, an enormous number of resources have been allocated to reduce the amount of phosphorus (P) entering the environment from both point and non-point sources. Nevertheless, the decrease in external P loading has not always resulted in a simultaneous decrease in the occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in waters contaminated with phosphorus. A two-part study is currently being conducted to investigate and measure the role of legacy recalcitrant P forms in the overall pool of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP). However, the objective of this particular study is to evaluate the potential of Organic Phosphorus (PO) …
"Adaptive Signal Control For Reducing The Effect Of Queue Spillback", Eamlong Tang
"Adaptive Signal Control For Reducing The Effect Of Queue Spillback", Eamlong Tang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Urban traffic congestion at signalized intersections poses significant challenges, with queue spillback events worsening delays, fuel consumption, and environmental impacts. This study addresses the critical issue of oversaturation at the Rama 4 intersection in Bangkok, where closely spaced intersections intensify congestion, leading to prolonged queues and inefficient green phase utilization. Traditional fixed-time signal controls lack the flexibility to adapt to fluctuating traffic volumes, emphasizing the need for an innovative approach. This research proposes an Adaptive Signal Control (ASC) scheme, utilizing VISSIM and VISVAP simulation tools to evaluate the system’s efficacy in managing real-time traffic conditions and reducing queue spillback events. …
Private Motorcycle Users' Insights Toward Public Bus Adoption In Phnom Penh, Eangthay Tang
Private Motorcycle Users' Insights Toward Public Bus Adoption In Phnom Penh, Eangthay Tang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
As Phnom Penh experiences rapid population growth and economic expansion, traffic congestion has worsened, largely due to the increasing ownership of private motorcycles. Despite the introduction of public bus services, adoption remains low as concerns over service quality, limited coverage, and inadequate infrastructure deter motorcycle users from making the shift. This study investigates the behavioral intentions, preferences, and concerns of motorcycle users, specifically targeting university students, to understand how public bus services can be improved to encourage adoption. Data were collected in July 2024 from 457 university students who regularly use motorcycles, using a structured questionnaire across four Phnom Penh …

Experimental Investigation On Internal Erosion Of Gap-Graded Sands And Its Improvement For Internal Erosion Control, Kasidit Chawanaputhron
Experimental Investigation On Internal Erosion Of Gap-Graded Sands And Its Improvement For Internal Erosion Control, Kasidit Chawanaputhron
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Internal erosion often occurs in earthen water-retaining structures such as embankment dams, levees, and dikes. This erosion is caused by seepage flows through soils or other porous materials containing a mixture of coarse and fine particles. The internal erosion process, also known as suffusion, involves the transport of fine particles carried away from the soil structure by seepage. Internal erosion can weaken the soil, create voids or cavities, and ultimately lead to structural collapse, posing a significant risk to earthen water-retaining structures. This research investigates the internal erosion behavior of gap-graded sands with various fine fraction contents through a series …
Modeling Of Predictive Financial Performance Of Ppp Highways Using Bayesian Network (Bn), David Ty
Modeling Of Predictive Financial Performance Of Ppp Highways Using Bayesian Network (Bn), David Ty
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Public-private partnerships (PPPs) are contractual agreements between the public and the private sector to deliver economic and social infrastructure. The PPP environment is inherently complex and dynamic, often involving long-term contracts and significant financial performance risks. While many studies examine the construction and operation phases separately, this study focuses on predicting the financial performance of PPP highways by integrating the risks and factors in both phases. It also considers country risk factors, such as income level, GDP per capita, and economic growth, to assess their impact on PPP highway projects. Data on risks and risk factors were gathered from sources …
A Bim-Enabled Materials Flow Tracking Platform For The Construction Supply Chains Of Modular Steel Projects, Thandar Lwin
A Bim-Enabled Materials Flow Tracking Platform For The Construction Supply Chains Of Modular Steel Projects, Thandar Lwin
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Off-site steel construction, or modular construction, involves building components in a factory and then bringing them to the construction site. This method speeds up construction, reduces waste, and improves quality. The movement of materials in this process is complicated, including ordering raw materials, making steel parts, transporting modules, and installing them on site. It is important to track these materials to ensure timely delivery, control costs, and avoid shortages of excess materials. In this paper, a BIM-enabled digital platform is developed to monitor and track the flow of construction materials in the supply chain of modular steel projects. This platform …
