Pneumatic capsule pipeline (PCP) uses wheeled capsules (vehicles) to carry cargoes through a pipeline filled with air. Modern large diameter PCP systems utilize through flow booster pumps, also known as jet pump injectors. These create the pressure differentials required to propel multiple capsules through a pipeline, while allowing both terminals at atmospheric pressure. This is done by placing a booster pump midway along the pipeline, and designing it in such a way that capsules can bypass the pump.

While advanced bridge management systems are being created, deployed and used to collect data for inventories of bridges and support the systematic identification and prioritization of needs, the bridge inspectors in the field are using paper-based to support, and record the result of their inspection process. MIA which is a wearable computer system, helps bridge inspectors collect multimedia information in the field and produce the inspection report. This system allows the inspector to fill out the inspection form, access previous inspection reports, make sketches of bridge elements, take photographs and produce the inspection report via voice or pen interface.

Biometrics are computerized methods of recognizing people based on physical or behavioral characteristics. The main biometric technologies include face recognition, fingerprint, hand geometry, iris, palm prints, signature and voice. Biometric technologies can work in two modes – authentication (one-to-one matching) and identification (one-to-many) matching. Recent studies by the Construction Industry Institute have indicated that for a typical $100 million construction project, between $500,000 and $1million is spent on keeping track of where things are on the site and monitoring the status of construction activity. The emergence of scanning lasers has made real-time updates and earthwork calculations of the construction site a viable technique. The gathering of data is non-intrusive and will not impede the construction progress. The scanned data are imported using the import module.

The Site Characterization and Analysis Penetrometer System (SCAPS) platform consists of a 20-ton truck equipped with vertical hydraulic rams that are used to force a cone penetrometer into the ground at a speed of 2 cm/sec to depths of approximately 50 m in nominally consolidated fine-grained soils when using a 100-m umbilical cable (25 m when using 50-m umbilical cables). The SCAPS program is currently conducting field verification investigations on state-of-the-art penetrometer mounted sensor and sampler systems for the real-time in situ detection of petroleum products, explosive compounds, volatile organic compounds (VOC), solvents, and gamma emitting radionuclides.

It basically comprises a portable line traveling system that is composed of a high-pressure water jet coating removal device, called HydroKleaner, a vacuum pump, a side boom, a pump sled, a process sled, and a 20 cu.yd. disposal container. Current techniques for removing asbestos- containing fireproofing require the construction of air-tight barriers, labor- intensive scraping of the fireproofing, and the installation of new asbestos-free fireproofing. The DMATM product is the result of a joint development by W.R. Grace & Co. and Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory. The new technology uses a foamy solution sprayed directly onto asbestos-containing fireproofing. After absorbing into the fireproofing, the foam chemically digests asbestos fibers and dissolves them into harmless minerals. The process is the first to chemically destroy asbestos without first removing the fireproofing.

The manual manufacturing process of GRC panels consists of two or four consecutive stages, depending on the panel type. The robotized spraying process is controlled by three (3) main modules which are executed sequentially or in parallel, depending on the task. The first module utilizes a common CAD environment with access to information relating to the manufacturing tools and parameters and to the design rules for the product. The robot or machine, which builds reinforcing cages required for concrete beams and columns, places the longitudinal bars on a jig, then places and ties the hoop reinforcing bars to the longitudinal bars automatically. All the operator must do is turn the machine on, align the hoop bars on the machine, and attach the necessary rigging to the cage for removal after the machine has finished.
