Encapco’s organic-based asphalt emulsion is used to immobilize lead in contaminated soil. Unlike other fixation or stabilization technologies, which physically bind contaminants in the soil matrix, Encapco’s emulsion is capable of chemically fixating lead. The Encapco process employs a chemical binding reaction in addition to encapsulation to meet regulatory leaching tests. The Encapco process has been evaluated on a number of contaminated materials ranging from silty sand from a quarry site, contaminated sand from a steel mill, and a foundry sand.

Compared to conventional concrete constructions, precast concrete is a better option which is more cost-effective for production, transport, and erection when columns and beams can be fabricated independently. The BSF connection is a hidden beam and connection for gravity loads that eliminates the need for projecting column corbels. From a steel box cast into the concrete beam end, a sliding steel “knife” plate with a safety notch is cantilevered into a steel box that has been cast into the concrete column.

Load tests and structural monitoring are used to gain information regarding the health and performance of an existing structure. Both are more representative than analytical approaches to evaluate the structure, especially when little is known about the structure's geometry and composition. Rapid in-situ load testing is intended to be much simpler and can be carried out in a fraction of the time and at a much lower cost. The testing procedure was originally developed at Center for Infrastructure Engineering Studies, University of Missouri-Rolla to offer a non-destructive yet conclusive demonstration of the performance of new construction techniques and technologies.

This technology represents an additional alternative for stabilizing weak foundation soils upon which buildings, bridges, roads or other structures are to be constructed. A plasma is a gas that has been ionized by the electric arc of a plasma torch and can therefore respond to electrical and magnetic fields. Plasma arc technology can create plasma using almost any type of gas (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, air, etc.) and in a wide range of pressures (vacuum to 20 atmospheres).

After earthquakes, repair and replacement of structural elements is time consuming and expensive. This new truss system contains several diagonal elements designed to absorb seismic energy and yield at prescribed levels. Standard moment frame design requires 100% visual inspection and ultrasonic testing which is eliminated when using the Tru-Frame system. Since all Tru-Frame connections are single pass fillet welds and tension control bolts, they can be visually inspected any time after completion without need for additional testing. This allows subsequent trades to start their work sooner.

A wide variety of geophysical imaging technologies and different application conditions pose challenges in selecting appropriate imaging technologies for the successful identification of underground utilities. A prototype computer decision tool, named IMAGTECH, was developed to assist in selecting the most appropriate imaging technologies to locate underground utilities. This dialog based computer application in a Microsoft Windows environment is an output of the research “Imaging and Locating Buried Utilities” under the Joint Transportation Research Program (JTRP) at Purdue University, IN, funded by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).

High strength steels have been available for years, but their use required more welding control and fabrication processes than conventional strength steels. A new grade of high performance steel, HPS-485W or HPS-70W, developed by a cooperative program between the Federal Highway Administration, the American Iron and Steel Institute, and the Department of the Navy in August 1994; uses a new chemical composition that provides improved welding and toughness properties.

An alternative method of attaching steel metal decks onto open web bar joist or structural steel beams. Erectors require a fast, reliable, efficient fastening method that can be used independent of weather conditions, and is easy, cost effective and verifiable. Attachment of the deck panels has historically been performed using puddle welding, with self-drilling screws used only when necessary. Pipe bursting can be used to replace pipes without using open trench methods. Pipe bursting is accomplished by pulling a bursting device through the existing pipe. This device by virtue of its size or its radial expansion ability (depending on the type) shatters the old pipe and forces the fragments into the surrounding soil. The new pipe is usually attached to the bursting device and is thus pulled into place as the device advances.

The Glass-fibre Reinforced Plastic is a material consisting of: fibreglass fabric and/or glass or aramid fibre (a synthetic fibre with high mechanical resistance) bound together by a thermohardening resin which has been suitably polymerized (polyester, epoxy, acrylic or phenolic). With this technology known as "Pultrusion", it is possible to combine the mentioned range of fibres with the resin in such a way as to obtain the required mechanical characteristics, which may vary in different parts of the same profile or be uniform throughout.
