Concrete is produced by mixing together cement, water and aggregates (i. e. sand and coarse aggregates) in specified proportions. It can do well with compressive forces but it is very weak under tensile forces. To overcome this problem, steel reinforcement are normally added to produce reinforced concrete which can also withstand tensile forces. Experience shows that environmental conditions may have a negative impact on the durability of reinforced concrete structures resulting in development of defects if not properly assessed and appropriate measures adopted to arrest the same at the design and construction stages.

Five distribution functions, FT-I and Weibull with the exponent k = 0.75, 1.0, 1.4 and 2.0 respectively, have been applied to 25-year wind data collected between 1972 and 1996 at Tanga, Dar Es Salaam, Zanzibar and Mtwara Meteorological stations. One maximum value for every year from the full data record was drawn to constitute the annual maxima series for each station. For each of the stations, 2-, 50- and 100-year return wind speeds with corresponding 90% confidence intervals were computed. Reinforced blockwork with horizontally laid reinforcing bars is used for walls in liquid retaining structures in developing countries. This is the case where, the level of technology in terms of skills and equipment is not in a position to allow successful construction of reinforced concrete walls. Blockwork walls are very sensitive to cracking which cannot be prevented by reinforcement. Vibration is one of the techniques employed in the determination of dynamic properties of fruits and vegetables. It entails generation of a mechanical or acoustic vibrational signal which is propagated through the flesh of the agricultural material. A bonded concrete overlay (BCO) is a concrete pavement rehabilitation method used to extend the life of an existing concrete pavement. The BCO should bond fully with the existing concrete, leading to a thicker composite pavement section, a much stiffer pavement, and a considerable decrease in pavement stresses. For one project, cost estimates for a BCO were half as much as for full-depth replacement of a pavement. In some cases BCOs have delaminated shortly after construction. This thesis presents the results of an experimental and theoretical study of the flexural behavior of thermoplastic beams with and without fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) rebars. Tests are conducted on commercially available thermoplastic beams known as Seatimber. The normal stress-strain relations of both the thermoplastic material and FRP rebars are obtained in tension and compression experimentally. These mechanical property curves are then used as part of the input for developing the theoretical moment-curvature relations using an iterative equilibrium procedure. The moment-curvature relations are in turn used for predicting the beam load-deflection curves via the central finite-difference procedure. Behavior predictions are made …

In the aftermath of the 1994 Northridge earthquake, extensive field investigations revealed damage in wood frame construction in the form of splitting of the 2 X 4 or 2 X 6 wood sill plates along the line of anchor bolts that typically connect shear walls to the masonry or concrete foundation. Due to the severity of such brittle failures, the city of Los Angeles has recently restricted the use of 2X dimension lumber in sill plates and requires the use of 3X dimension lumber. Various methods of analysis have been employed to predict the structural behaviour of the Triangularly Folded Plate Barrel Vault, with conflicting results. A review of past analytical and experimental investigations carried out on the structure show that theoretical analysis based on a smaller effective width rather than the overall plate width is capable of closely predicting the deflection behaviour of the structure. This paper presents an experimental study of the behaviour of a triangularly folded plate barrel vault with physically reduced plate width. A new design specification for engineered wood structures has been proposed in load and resistance factor design (LRFD) format. This paper provides an overview of the proposed LRFD connections design criteria. The connections design provisions are, in part, calibrated from allowable stress design provisions. Major changes from historic practice, however, result from a change in behavioral equations to a theoretical base for predicting the lateral strength of connections using bolts, screws, and nails. New provisions for axial withdrawal of driven and turned fasteners, as well as combined axial and lateral loading criteria are also proposed. Safety levels were calibrated to …

A method of derivation of the coefficients of the transport matrix for a finite element resting on one and two-parameter elastic foundation soils is outlined. The coefficients are summarized for both the Bernoulli–Euler and the Timoshenko beam model in tabular form, for general reference. In addition, bounds on the parameters describing beam/soil flexure, beam and soil shear, which govern the validity of the two-parameter elastic solutions are provided in graphical form.

In this study, the substructuring formulation is incorporated into Ritz Vector method to obtain and solve the reduced system of dynamic equilibrium equations. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional truss problems are considered in the present study. The accuracy and computational time using the proposed technique are compared with known solutions. The effect of using different number of substructures and Ritz vectors are also investigated, equations solver is utilized to Moreover, a version of a parallel further enhance the numerical performance of the proposed technique on the FLEX/32 Multicomputer.

This thesis presents the results of a study that determines the true safety factor of underground square reinforced concrete tank walls.
The walls are analyzed and designed by elastic method. The amount and distribution of the reinforcement was determined by use of the alternate design method (working stress) in compliance with all ACI code requirements. The wall's ultimate moment was computed by use of yield line theory assuming non-isotropic reinforcement. The ultimate value of the earth pressure was computed and compared with the elastic analysis and design values to give the true safety factor.

Substructuring formulation using adjoint variable approach has been developed for design sensitivity analysis and optimization of large scale structures. In this study, the procedure for statics and sensitivity analysis are re-examined to propose a programming scheme which can be implemented either in a sequential or parallel environment. The computational times of the substructuring formulation using a single processor versus multi-processors are compared to see the effectiveness of the formulation in the concurrent computing environment.

This study was undertaken in order to determine analytically the magnitude of the secondary (i.e., joint deflection induced) moments in the continuous glued-laminated chords of bowstring timber trusses. Traditionally, these moments have been assumed to be small and therefore neglected. The American Institute of Timber Construction makes no mention of these moments in their recommended design procedure.

A study was undertaken to investigate the compressive capacity of a specific group of single angle members.
A review of existing literature and techniques was presented. Laboratory compression tests were performed on 22 angle members of four different sizes and two different lengths. Additional tests were performed to determine the yield strength of the material. The results, normalized with respect to the yield stress, were tabulated and discussed.
Two existing analytic models were used to attempt to predict the ultimate capacity of the test members. The first, an elastic method, was based upon the AISC combined stress equation. The second, …

This thesis documents the fabrication, testing techniques, and response of a plastic scale model of an orthotropic bridge deck. To economically investigate a two-lane steel bridge deck, plastic AcrylicR was used as a modeling material. Welds were simulated with dichloromethane, a capillary action solvent, and PS-30, a polymerizable cement. Deflections were measured with laboratory dial guages while strains were monitored with strain guages mounted on the deck.
The response of the deck to AASHO vehicle axle loads was compared with a discrete element computer program used to analyze orthotropic bridge decks continuous over flexible supports. Results indicate good correlation …

The static and dynamic buckling behaviors of a shallow, simply supported sinusoidal arch subjected to both a uniformly distributed step pressure load and a purely impulsive load are considered. Five equilibrium paths are obtained for the arch under static loading conditions. Critical static loads corresponding to two different instability modes and based on characteristics in the load displacement curve are obtained numerically. Critical dynamic loads, corresponding to three different instability modes, are obtained from a numerical procedure in which buckling criteria are based on characteristics in the time response of the structure.
