The existing calculation methods for texture depth of asphalt pavements are easily affected by external and human factors.Therefore,a multi-region plane fitting algorithm for the texture depth based on three-dimensional (3D) linear laser data was proposed.The algorithm preprocessed the collected 3D height data matrix of the pavement and derived a slope-based adaptive filtering algorithm for point cloud data.Then, the 3D height matrix was divided into multiple regions,and the local extremum of the center point was determined.Finally,with the three-point and one-surface plane fitting algorithm as the core,the texture depth of asphalt pavements was calculated.The experimental results show that the correlation between this …

In view of the insufficient protection grade of the guardrail in old bridges,a combined guardrail suitable for the low concrete wall guardrail in the old bridge was designed and developed by using finite element analysis while not damaging the main structure of the bridge.The protection grade was verified to reach SA grade through a full-scale vehicle collision test.The guardrail was designed with new high-strength alloy steel,with light weight and beautiful appearance.There was no need to dismantle the original concrete foundation in the old bridge,which is convenient for construction and requires low cost.Therefore,it is worth being popularized and applied in the …

Owing to poor gradation and high liquid limit and plasticity index,the application of gravel laterite on road paving is limited in West Africa.To overcome this issue,laterite granule combined with sand at different content was explored.The performance including the particle composition,limit water content and CBR value was investigated.The results indicate that sand treatment can improve the gradation,enhance the compactness,and reduce the plasticity index.The improved gravel laterite can meet the requirements of subbase,cushion,and base courses.Cement treatment can improve the mechanical properties of laterite grains.Cement and sand content affect the unconfined compressive strength significantly,with an optimal sand content range identified.Specifically,laterite granules mixed with …

Antibiotic resistance poses an urgent public health concern, with the environment playing a crucial role in the development and dissemination of resistant bacteria. There is a growing body of research indicating that stormwater is a significant source and transport vector of resistance elements. This research sought to characterize the role of green stormwater infrastructure (GSI), designed for stormwater infiltration, in accumulating and propagating antibiotic resistance in the urban water cycle. Sampling included 24 full-scale GSI systems representing three distinct types of GSI - bioswales, bioretention cells, and constructed wetlands. Biochar, a naturally occurring and renewable carbon material, becomes porous through activation. Activated biochar is an ideal candidate for use as an adsorbent. The objective of this study is to investigate whether activated biochar derived from Colorado soft pine serves as a better adsorbent and demonstrates enhanced adsorption capabilities after undergoing secondary physical activation at various activation times. Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) is Louisiana's number one row crop. Growing and processing sugarcane produces significant amounts of byproducts, including bagasse, crop residue, molasses, filter-press mud, and boiler fly ash. These products represent an important opportunity to generate value-added and specialty products and enhance sugarcane's sustainability by facilitating a circular economy, where agricultural by-products are reused instead of disposing them (linear economy), in order to reduce resource use and energy demand. Low back pain, knee osteoarthritis, and cancer patients suffer from chronic pain. Aberrant nerve growth into intervertebral disc, knee, and tumors, are common pathologies that lead to these chronic pain conditions. Axonal dieback induced by capsaicin (Caps) denervation has been FDA-approved to treat painful neuropathies and knee osteoarthritis but with shortterm efficacy and discomfort. This study introduced a four-way CFD-DEM coupling approach to simulate the shear-induced particle migration (SIPM) mechanism leading to formation of the lubrication layer (LL) during concrete pumping. The CFD-DEM simulations considered the coupled effect of concentration (10 %–40 %) and wide size distribution (1–17 mm) of aggregate and rheology of the mortar for forces between the suspending matrix and the particles (and vice versa), as well as force transmission directly between particles (and the pipe wall). Current design code equations for estimating the elastic modulus of specialty concretes like ultra-high performance concrete are not all suitable. Developing empirical curves from exhaustive experimental testing is challenging for concretes that may have high levels of cement replacement with mineral admixtures and fibers at varying volume contents. As such, an alternative approach is taken that seeks to understand the constituent microscale stiffness mechanisms and relate the results to the macroscale. Compaction with the Harvard Miniature Compaction Apparatus (HMCA) was investigated to develop a method that can be used in place of typical Proctor compaction. Advantages for compaction with the HMCA include the need for less soil for testing and less preparation time. To investigate the potential for HMCA as a replacement, soil specimens were compacted with both the Proctor and HMCA methodologies at equivalent energies. Special moment frames (SMFs) having reduced beam section (RBS) connections are commonly used in high seismic areas as they resist lateral forces while preserving critical welded connection regions. Traffic studies guide engineers in designing road networks to ensure smooth traffic flow and public safety. Such studies assess the need for traffic control devices to manage vehicle flow safely and efficiently. This is crucial at intersections which pose high risks of collision and congestion. A traffic analysis at the intersection of Island Grove and E 2nd Street on the FM-4 roadway in Cleburne, TX was conducted to evaluate the sufficiency of the current traffic control device. Methane reformation and methane pyrolysis involve separating, or cracking, the components of methane, leading to the production of hydrogen gas, and in the case of pyrolysis, solid carbon. Because methane is known as a leading cause of climate change, these technologies are gaining attention as the global community moves to address methane as a greenhouse gas. Reducing the response time of emergency vehicles (EV) is highly important due to the relationship between response time and fatality rate. Emerging technologies can help reduce response time by enhancing EV prioritization. On the other hand, EV prioritization can negatively impact general traffic especially in cross streets of signalized intersections. In this research, three main objectives were followed. Firstly, creation and dissipation of EVP disruption on arterial cross streets was studied to recommend solutions to prevent this disruption. To fly an unmanned aircraft system (UAS), commonly referred to as a “drone,” the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires pilots to pass a knowledge test. There is no requirement at the state or federal level for drone operators to demonstrate the ability to operate a UAS. The National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) has created an exam for public and private entities to assess basic UAS flight proficiency. The home-refill delivery system is a business model that addresses the concerns of plastic waste and its impact on the environment. It allows customers to pick up their household goods at their doorsteps and refill them into their own containers. However, the difficulty in accessing customers’ locations and product consolidations are undeniable challenges. To overcome these issues, we introduce a new variant of the Profitable Tour Problem, named the multi-vehicle profitable tour problem with flexible compartments and mandatory customers (MVPTPFC-MC).
