Rapid-Throughput Analysis Of 1,4-Dioxane In Plants By Centrifugal Sampling And Phytoforensic Analysis For Site Delineation And Assessing Enhanced Rhizodegradation, Anthony Eberechukwu Oha Jan 2023

Rapid-Throughput Analysis Of 1,4-Dioxane In Plants By Centrifugal Sampling And Phytoforensic Analysis For Site Delineation And Assessing Enhanced Rhizodegradation, Anthony Eberechukwu Oha

Masters Theses

"Owing to its broad use and environmental persistence, 1,4-dioxane (dioxane) poses a notable threat to public health and is recalcitrant to traditional remedial systems. Dioxane moves readily in an aqueous environment and is an emerging contaminant in drinking water, surface water, groundwater, and wastewater. The extent of dioxane in the biosphere is also difficult to delineate, particularly in the subsurface. Phytoremediation has demonstrated the potential for dioxane groundwater remediation. Recent findings indicate that plant-microbial symbiosis may be more advantageous for limiting potential transport and transfer into plant tissues and the atmosphere. Bioaugmentation of the rhizosphere paired with soil amendments has …

Selecting Consolidation Procedures For Making Concrete Specimens, Paige Marie Toebben Jan 2023

Selecting Consolidation Procedures For Making Concrete Specimens, Paige Marie Toebben

Masters Theses

"The goal of this research was to reevaluate ASTM C31 Standard Practice for Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field, as well as deepen our understanding of the relationship between the consolidation process, concrete composition, and workability. An improved understanding of this area will help to reduce variability in concrete quality. The project involved evaluating the effect of different consolidation methods on concrete specimens with changing levels of workability. To do this, concrete cylinders were created with varying viscosities by adjusting the water-to-cement ratio (w/c) and water-reducing agent. More cylinders were created with varying paste volumes while keeping …

A Literature Analysis Of Microgrid Optimization Studies, Izzy Medeiros

Honors Theses and Capstones

Senior civil engineering student, Izzy Medeiros, is presenting her honors thesis in the form of a literature analysis. Her research involved investigating existing microgrid studies and where there are current gaps in the knowledge. About 40 publications written within the last 20 years were analyzed for their research goals, optimization objectives, and microgrid design, pointing to where this research is currently lacking. Most real studies were conducted in Asia, as Southeast Asia has island communities that need the reliability of a renewable microgrid during extreme weather events. Photovoltaic panels in combination with wind turbines comprise the most common configuration of …

Predictions Of The Dynamic Complex Modulus Of Non-Conventional Asphalt Concrete Using Machine Learning Techniques, Annie Benson Jan 2023

Predictions Of The Dynamic Complex Modulus Of Non-Conventional Asphalt Concrete Using Machine Learning Techniques, Annie Benson

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The complex dynamic modulus (|E*|) is a characterization property that defines the stiffness of an asphalt mixture. The dynamic modulus can be found through lab testing or predictions. Since lab testing can be time-consuming and expensive, the prediction method can be used as an alternative method. While a statistical method has been traditionally used for the |E*| prediction such as the Witczak’s predictive equations, machine learning (ML) is recently emerging as an alternative way that |E*| predictions can be made. This research attempted to predict the |E*| using several ML techniques including linear regression, support vector machines (SVM), decision trees, …

Evaluations of FRP Composite Coupons Under Impact and Puncture

Lekhnath Bhandari

Railroad tank cars are the main mode of transportation for carrying flammable liquids and other hazardous materials, in any mode of ground transportation system. These tank cars, if punctured during derailments may explode releasing large amounts of hazardous materials and posing serious threats to human life and leading to economic losses. To minimize such catastrophes, in 2015, United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) proposed to improve the thermal and puncture performances of these tank cars and introduced two new design specifications: DOT-117 and DOT-117R. Tank cars with 9/16 inches …

Spatial Analysis Of Bike-Sharing Station Usage And Placement: Redefining Bike-Share Planning For Equity, Sydney E. French Jan 2023

Spatial Analysis Of Bike-Sharing Station Usage And Placement: Redefining Bike-Share Planning For Equity, Sydney E. French

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Historically, bike share system (BSS) station locations have been guided by potential economic and environmental benefits associated with increased bike share usage per station. For example, a typical location identification approach may attempt to maximize demand per station based on population size or activity and area characteristics. Such identification methods often result in an unequal representation of specific population groups among the systems’ users, thus hindering the potential sustainability-related benefits. To address these disparities, some bike share organizations have started developing and implementing equity-oriented programs focusing on expanding their reach to underserved communities. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of such programs has …

Development And Validation Of Improved Live Load Distribution Factors For Moment In Press-Brake-Formed Steel Tub Girder Bridges, Brook Teklu Woldegabriel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Press-brake-formed tub girders (PBFTGs) offer innovative solutions for short-span steel bridge applications, possessing efficiency, versatility, and sustainability. These girders are galvanized shallow trapezoidal boxes fabricated from cold-bent structural steel plates. Depending on the design requirements, a concrete deck or other deck options, such as a steel sandwich plate system, can be placed on the girders. The Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance (SSSBA) extensively researched the steel PBFTG bridge system. As a testament to its potential, the AASHTO Innovation Initiative (AII) recognized it as a 2021 Focus Technology. AII has shown commitment to promoting the adoption of PBFTG among its member …

Single Field Of View Calibration Through Estimating Three Mutually Orthogonal Vanishing Points For Spatial Data Collection In Traffic Scenes, Sourav Dutta Jan 2023

Single Field Of View Calibration Through Estimating Three Mutually Orthogonal Vanishing Points For Spatial Data Collection In Traffic Scenes, Sourav Dutta

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Accurately extracting the three mutually orthogonal vanishing points plays a vital role in the field of view calibration for many surveillance-based traffic applications. However, the paucity of parallel lines along the dominant directions in many traffic scenes engenders the inapplicability of the current methods for a successful calibration. This research proposed a novel vanishing point estimating method for traffic scenes. This method capitalizes on both the road scene and moving vehicles for the determination of the dominant directions of the real-world coordinate frame. It also exploits distinctive edgelets for the direct identification of vanishing point candidates. Both lab and field …

Climate Change And The Law Of National Security Adaptation, Mark P. Nevitt Jan 2023

Climate Change And The Law Of National Security Adaptation, Mark P. Nevitt

Faculty Articles

The Department of Defense (DoD) is the largest employer in the world, owns and operates an enormous global real estate portfolio, and emits more Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) than many nations. Entrusted with the national security, the DoD is now threatened by a new enemy—climate change. Climate change imperils national security infrastructure while undermining the military’s capacity to respond to climate-driven disasters at home and abroad. However, legal scholarship has yet to address what I call “the law of national security adaptation” and related questions. For example, how do environmental and climate change laws apply to the U.S. military? What laws …

A Machine Learning Predictive Model For The Extension Of Operation Time And The Operation Cost Overrun : A Case Study Of Vietnamese Bot-Ppp Transportation Projects, Pham Van Hoai Jan 2023

A Machine Learning Predictive Model For The Extension Of Operation Time And The Operation Cost Overrun : A Case Study Of Vietnamese Bot-Ppp Transportation Projects, Pham Van Hoai

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects in Vietnam's transportation sector are vital for infrastructure development but frequently encounter significant risk factors (RFs) during the operation phase. These RFs often lead to the extension of operation time (EOPT) and operation cost overruns (OPCO), undermining project success and investor returns. Despite the importance of the operation phase, most research has focused on the project feasibility and construction stages, with limited attention given to the operation phase. This research fills this gap by developing predictive models to manage the EOPT and OPCO caused by RFs during the operation phase of Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) transportation projects in …

Multi-Material Proportional Topology Optimization Using Adaptive Quadtree Sbfe Framework, Natchanon Chantab Jan 2023

Multi-Material Proportional Topology Optimization Using Adaptive Quadtree Sbfe Framework, Natchanon Chantab

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This thesis presents a novel approach to multi-material Proportional Topology Optimization (PTO) by integrating an automatic image-based quadtree element (2D) structure with the Scaled Boundary Finite Element framework (SBFE). Our method minimizes compliance or maximizes mechanical stiffness of multi-material structures while adhering to volume fraction constraints for each material. Design variables, proportionally weighted from 0 to 1, correspond to compliance values in optimization loops without sensitivity values. Additionally, a material interpolation scheme spatially separates material behaviors. An adaptive quadtree algorithm captures local area element details, reducing memory usage, solution times, and improving numerical accuracy. Implemented in finite element analysis using …

Development Of A Computer Vision System To Monitor Container Closures And Cleanliness Of Tools Related To Volatile Substances In Construction Projects, Tun Lin Naing

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Construction chemicals have gained an essential role across various aspects of the construction process in modern construction. While construction chemicals provide advantages to construction activities, if there are no control measures, they can transform into hazardous substances that pose occupational health risks and environmental impacts, which can also affect a company's ESG performance. Therefore, it is important to implement prevention and control measures for chemical materials during their utilization on construction sites to prevent the transformation of construction chemicals into hazardous substances. Currently, traditional methods of checking chemical containers and tools on construction sites are time-consuming, prone to errors, and …

Stability Analysis Of Cellular Steel Plane Frames, Voraphol Horsangchai Jan 2023

Stability Analysis Of Cellular Steel Plane Frames, Voraphol Horsangchai

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research presents a comprehensive investigation of the global stability of cellular steel columns, beam-columns, and frames. For the cellular steel columns, the existing equation for predicting the elastic buckling load is improved to account for the local bending deformation of the web posts. Subsequently, the column strength equation is analytically developed from the energy approach. The second-order inelastic analysis is performed using 3D finite element (FE) models and validated against the experimental results. The validated FE models are then employed to assess the developed column strength curve and examine the influence of initial imperfections on the critical strength of …

Bi-Directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization For 3d-Printed Prefabricated Concrete Panels, Pochara Amornsittipipat Jan 2023

Bi-Directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization For 3d-Printed Prefabricated Concrete Panels, Pochara Amornsittipipat

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This thesis seeks to develop an optimal design methodology for 3D-printed prefabricated concrete panels. Although 3D-printed precast panels are advantageous for producing flexible forms, reducing workforce demand, and minimizing environmental impacts, the product must not be too heavy to transport and install. Therefore, the consideration of weight emphasizes the need for structural optimization. This research presents truss-like structural modeling based on the properties of 3D-printed concrete, suggests an optimal design methodology using the Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (BESO) algorithm to achieve minimum weight, conducts parametric studies to understand the relationship between significant parameters and the optimal weight achieved, and demonstrates …

Image-Base Adaptive Proportional Topology Optimization Of Infill Structure Using Polygon Sbfe Approach, Sompong Rungsawang Jan 2023

Image-Base Adaptive Proportional Topology Optimization Of Infill Structure Using Polygon Sbfe Approach, Sompong Rungsawang

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The use of infill structures is widespread in additive manufacturing applications, offering porous domains that are well-suited for withstanding various physical loadings. This thesis introduces a novel approach, namely Proportional Topology Optimization (PTO), leveraging an automatic image-based quadtree Scaled Boundary Finite Element (SBFE) framework. The SBFE, where sub-domains are treated as polygonal elements in 2D, is employed to address the hanging node issue. The methodology is extended to design infill structures by minimizing compliance concerning force variations, subject to local volume fraction constraints rather than a global volume constraint for each element in the design domain. Material density for each …

Comparative Assessment Of Environmental And Post- Occupancy Evaluation Of Green Buildings Vs Conventional Buildings, Wint Thiri Marn Jan 2023

Comparative Assessment Of Environmental And Post- Occupancy Evaluation Of Green Buildings Vs Conventional Buildings, Wint Thiri Marn

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Due to increasing office space demand and rising rental rates, stakeholders seek cost-effective alternatives that align with sustainability goals. Therefore, green building offers an extensive solution particularly in growing office building rental rates and the need for cost-effective options that are consistent with environmentally conscious goals. Using the IPCC standard, the study assessed emissions across Scope 1 (refrigerant fugitive emissions) and Scope 1 emission from (Wastewater treatment system), Scope 2 (energy consumption emissions), and Scope 3 (emissions from water consumption, and waste generation). Scope 1 emissions are found to vary due to the usage of water-based fire-retardant systems, but they …

Bench- And Pilot-Scale Corrosion Control Inhibitor Effectiveness Studies For A Community's Blended Surficial And Brackish Groundwater Supply, Paula Campesino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The United States Environmental Protection Agency regulates the lead and copper content of a public water system's finished water at the consumer's tap, through the Safe Drinking Water Act's Lead and Copper Rule (LCR), promulgated in 1991. This rule was recently changed through the LCR Revisions (LCRR), that took effect in 2021. The more stringent requirements of the LCRR motivated the City of Sarasota, Florida (City), to work with the University of Central Florida (UCF) on a study of the municipality's finished water corrosivity. Initially, this evaluation investigated the City's existing finished water corrosivity using linear polarization resistance (LPR) measurements …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper explores using Cluster Validity Indices Fuzzy Adaptative Resonance Theory (CVI Fuzzy ART) to cluster ground motion records (GMRs). Clustering the features extracted from a supervised network trained for predicting the structure damage results in less overfitting from the trained network. Using Cluster Validity Indices (CVIs) to evaluate the clustering gives feedback to how well the data is being classified, allowing further separation of the data. By using CVI Fuzzy ART in combination with features extracted from a trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), we were able to form additional clusters in the data. Within the primary clusters, accuracy was …

Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (Qmra) For Urban Stormwater Reuse After Treatment Through A Bioretention System, Isaac Oluk Jan 2023

Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (Qmra) For Urban Stormwater Reuse After Treatment Through A Bioretention System, Isaac Oluk

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

Bioretention, also referred to as a stormwater biofilter, is an extensively used low-impact development technology for both stormwater management and water quality gains. However, little attention has been paid to the acceptability and uncertainty of human health risks associated with the treatment performance of bioretention filter media, and non-potable water reuse scenarios to guide decision-making and system design. This study uses bioretention mechanistic modeling paired with quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) under uncertainty to evaluate human health risks from two reference pathogens – Campylobacter jejuni and Cryptosporidium. Consumption of irrigated green salad, consumption of raw green salad washed with effluent, …

Do Transportation Network Companies Affect Road Safety Outcomes: A Spatially Detailed Analysis In San Francisco, Vedant Shriniwas Goyal Jan 2023

Do Transportation Network Companies Affect Road Safety Outcomes: A Spatially Detailed Analysis In San Francisco, Vedant Shriniwas Goyal

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

US traffic fatal deaths have steadily risen since 2010, with the past few years witnessing an unusual trend increase. To reverse such a dangerous trend, one must understand how and why road crashes occur and which factors are causing them. Emerging transportation technologies have shown the potential to improve mobility and safety. However, such technologies are not inherently beneficial and could worsen road safety if not effectively implemented. One such transportation technology that warrants investigation is the rise of ridesharing services, also called Transportation Network Companies (TNCs). The primary goal of the dissertation is to explore the statistical relationship between …

Prediction Of Chlorine And Disinfection Byproduct Concentration In Water Distribution Systems Using Kypipe And Tthm Regression Models: Application To Two Systems In Kentucky, Yogesh Gautam Jan 2023

Prediction Of Chlorine And Disinfection Byproduct Concentration In Water Distribution Systems Using Kypipe And Tthm Regression Models: Application To Two Systems In Kentucky, Yogesh Gautam

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

The main objective of this research is to study if the hydraulic and water quality models can be used for water quality analysis of chlorine decay and TTHM formation at various locations across a water distribution system. This is particularly important because it is not always easy or economical to take multiple field samples and analyze them in the laboratory. In this study, models of two different water distribution systems (one more urban and efficiently managed system located in a relative flat topography, and other more rural and less efficiently managed system located in a mountainous topography) were developed in …

Estimating The Effectiveness Of Incentives On The Adoption Of Electric Vehicles, Michelle O. Imarah

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

This study aims to estimate the effectiveness of incentives in increasing the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) among households in the near future. Five scenarios were tested using a vehicle type choice model estimated from the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) data: (1) increasing the number of EV chargers, (2) reducing the purchase price of EVs based on household income, (3) increasing the number of EV models and makes, (4) increasing the EV range, and (5) all scenarios at once. Results showed that all the scenarios were effective in increasing EV adoption amongst households. Some scenarios were more effective …
