Honey bee propolis is a complex, resinous mixture created by bees using plant sources such as leaves, flowers, and bud exudates. This study characterized how cropland surrounding apiaries affects the chemical composition and antimicrobial effects of propolis. The chemical composition and compound abundance of the propolis samples were analyzed using Gas Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and the antimicrobial effects were analyzed using the 50% minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC50) assay against four relevant bee pathogens, Serratia marcescens, Paenibacillus larvae, Lysinibacillus sphaericus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Propolis composition varied significantly with apiary, and cropland coverage predicted mean sum abundance of …

Outdoor air pollution is a complex system that is responsible for the deaths of millions of people annually, yet the integration of interdisciplinary data necessary to assess air quality's multiple metrics is still lacking. This case study integrates atmospheric indicators (concentrations of criteria pollutants including particulate matter and gaseous pollutants), traffic indicators (permanent traffic monitoring station data), and social indicators (community responses in Twitter archives) representing the interplay of the three critical pillars of the United Nations' Triple Bottom Line: environment, economy, and society. During the watershed moment of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns in Florida, urban centers demonstrated the gaps …

Climate change exposes more frequent natural hazards and physical vulnerabilities to the built and natural environments. Extreme precipitation and temperature events will have a significant impact on both the natural environment and human society. However, it is unclear whether precipitation and temperature extremes increase physical vulnerabilities across scales and their links with large-scale climate indices. This study investigates the relationship between precipitation and temperature extremes, as recommended by the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI), and large scale climatological phenomenon indices (Indian Summer Monsoon Index (ISMI), Arctic Oscillation (AO), and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)), using India as …

Coral Reef Restoration Monitoring Through An Environmental Engineering And Social-Ecological Lens, Michelle C. Platz
Coral Reef Restoration Monitoring Through An Environmental Engineering And Social-Ecological Lens, Michelle C. Platz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Florida Reef Tract (FRT) has experienced catastrophic coral cover declines since the 1970s, and active coral restoration is therefore needed to recover ecosystem integrity, preserve intrinsic values, and guarantee the provision of ecosystem services on which humans rely. While the coral restoration field’s ability to grow and outplant coral has improved extensively in the last two decades, this growth has led to the development of research gaps pertaining to restoration monitoring, specifically regarding the technical capacity to perform long term monitoring, spatial and temporal resolution, and metrics with which to quantify changes in ecosystem function resulting from restoration. The …

Cobalt Ferrite Nano-Composites For The Oxidation Of Phenols In Oil Refinery Wastewater, Amira Mohamed
Theses and Dissertations
Phenolic compounds have the tendency to persist in the environment over a long period making them a main source of concern because of their toxic characteristics towards humans and animals (Bruce et al., 1987). Therefore, existence of phenolic compounds in aquatic environment is unfavourable and as a result, many treatment techniques have been implemented to treat the wastewater produced from petroleum refineries. Petroleum refineries are among the top industries that produces significant quantities of high phenol concentration wastewater. Photo-catalysis is a promising and effective method to treat phenol present in oil refineries effluent. In this study, the photo-catalyst used is …

Resilient Modulus Of Siliciclastic Unbound Granular Materials Under Repeated Wheel Loading, Siya Rimoyi
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
The Resilient Modulus (Mr) is a fundamental material property input in modern Mechanistic-Empirical (M-E) pavements structural design. Empirical pavement design methods have been in use over a long period during which large databases of four- days-soaked California Bearing Ratio (CBR) values at or near the Maximum Dry Density have been generated in the strength assessments for Unbound Granular Materials (UGMs). In the adoption of the M-E design approach researchers have so far attempted with various degrees of success to develop models to derive resilient modulus from the conventional CBR-based databases. This study provides an extensive laboratory experimental study to investigate …
Development Of Intensity-Duration-Frequency (Idf) Models For Manually Operated Rain Gauge Catchment: A Case Study Of Port Harcourt Metropolis Using 50 Years Rainfall Data, Francis Ogbozige
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Hydraulic structures such as surface drainages and culverts are usually constructed in urban areas with the intention of draining runoff into nearby streams and rivers in order to avoid flooding. However, most of these structures frequently fail to serve the intended use due to the occurrence of high intensity rainfall accompanied with long duration, which produce runoff discharge higher than their designed capacities. This is common in many developing countries as drainages and culverts are most times constructed without considering hydrological analysis of the catchment. Hence, this research considered Port Harcourt city as a case study by utilizing 50 years …

Concrete structures may be exposed to dynamic loadings within short periods such as earthquakes and vehicles load, resulting in substantial damage to human life and property because of the collapse of concrete structures. The research achievements on dynamic properties of high-performance composites with LC3 (HPC-LC3) are limited, although dynamic loadings are commonly encountered in infrastructure. The study aims to develop a new-green concrete product (HPC-LC3) with high dynamical properties and promote its mass use in a vibration service environment by investigating dynamical properties of HPC-LC3. Dynamical properties of structure can be promoted at material level by means of enhancing the …

More than two billion people globally still lack access to safely managed drinking water (WHO & UNICEF, 2021). Although gains in access to water service over the past two decades have been large, universal access to safe and affordable drinking water (SDG 6, target 6.1) is not on track to be achieved. In Panama, safely managed drinking water access has not been measured. However, the data on basic water access illustrates the large disparities between rural and urban areas of Panama. While 98% of urban Panamanian households have basic access to water, only 86% of rural Panamanian households, and 54% …
Efficacy Of Softener For Enhancing Fatigue And Low-Temperature Performance Of Asphalt Binders With High Rap, Sumon Roy
Student Theses and Dissertations
The use of a higher percentage of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in asphalt concrete can lead to developing premature failure of asphalt pavements due to fatigue and/or low-temperature cracking. The incorporation of softening agents in asphalt binders can resolve these problems and enhance pavement durability. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of waste-based softening agents for enhancing the properties of asphalt mixes with high RAP contents. Waste cooking oil (WCO), and engine bottom oil (EBO) along with a commercial rejuvenator were investigated in this study. Three types of Performance Grade (PG) binders, each collected from two different sources, used …

Predicting Seismic Site Coefficients For Northeast Arkansas (Nea) By Performing Site Specific Ground Motion Response Analysis (Ssgmra), Md Radiue Islam
Student Theses and Dissertations
Northeast Arkansas (NEA) has a deep deposition of soil overlying the bedrock. The code-based design approach e.g., the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) does not account for deep deposition of soil overlying the bedrock. As a result, structures with short-period spectral accelerations are overdesigned at significant cost, and structures with long-period spectral accelerations are under-designed at significant risk. The purpose of this study is to perform SSGMRA for areas in NEA and predict seismic site factors. Seismic hazard analyses have been carried out, and one dimensional (1D) site response analysis has been performed for seven different …

Influence Of Supplementary Cementitious Material (Scm) On Concrete Durability (Drying Shrinkage And Alkali-Silica Reactivity), Raiyan Chowdhury
Student Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the long-term durability of concrete by replacing cement (10%, 20%, and 30%) with four potential Supplementary Cementitious Material (SCMs), namely, Reclaimed Fly Ash (RFA), Ground Bottom Ash (GBA), Class F Fly Ash (FA), and Metakaolin® (MK). For long-term durability, drying shrinkage and alkali-silica reactivity (ASR) tests were performed along with workability (slump) and compressive strength tests. The FA and RFA demonstrated better workability compared to GBA, MK, and combined mixes (RFA-MK or GBA-MK). The GBA and RFA modified specimens exhibited better compressive strength than other SCMs. Modifying concrete mix with SCMs lowered the ASR expansion than the …

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
The Production Strategy Process (PSP) is an integral part of production planning and control as it defines how production processes are structured and designed and outlines how production will be executed. PSP involves massive information transfer and communication among project participants. While BIM can improve the flow of information, the paradox of designing 3D models in 2D space remains. This paradox indicates that new visualization technologies are needed to leverage the use of information in the PSP. As Industry 4.0, the fourth industrial revolution, continues to evolve, it is imperative that construction firms seek, find, and adopt new technologies. This …

Adaptation is key to minimizing heatwaves' societal burden; however, our understanding of adaptation capacity across the socioeconomic spectrum is incomplete. We demonstrate that observed heatwave trends in the past four decades were most pronounced in the lowest-quartile income region of the world resulting in >40% higher exposure from 2010 to 2019 compared to the highest-quartile income region. Lower-income regions have reduced adaptative capacity to warming, which compounds the impacts of higher heatwave exposure. We also show that individual contiguous heatwaves engulfed up to 2.5-fold larger areas in the recent decade (2010–2019) as compared to the 1980s. Widespread heatwaves can overwhelm …

Setting times, as the early-age properties of cement-based materials, are important properties to ensure the quality and long-term performance of engineering structures. To determine the initial and final setting times of cementitious materials, the compressive wave velocity and shear wave velocity of six early-age mortar samples were monitored. Their time evolution curves of Young's modulus, shear modulus, bulk modulus, and Poisson's ratio were then calculated and analyzed. The signature times of the derivatives of the Poisson's ratio evolution curves correlate well with the initial and final setting times, and the remarkably high coefficient of determination values relative to the data …

Water Film Depth Prediction Model For Highly Textured Pavement Surface Drainage, Alireza Pourhassan, Ahmed A. Gheni, Mohamed Elgawady
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Water film depth (WFD) is an important factor for road traffic safety because of its direct connection with skid resistance, hydroplaning speed, and the tendency of splash and spray. Increasing the pavement macrotexture reduces WFD. However, existing models for WFD prediction have not been developed on highly textured surfaces such as chip seal. Furthermore, the rainfall intensities used for developing most of these models were relatively low, leaving no or low WFD on chip seal surfaces. To propose a WFD prediction model suitable for highly textured surfaces and to consider the effect of surface material type, an experimental study was …

Using Phreeqc To Model Cement Hydration, Niall Holmes Dr., Mark Tyrer, Roger P. West Prof, Aaron Lowe, Denis Kelliher
Articles
This paper presents the steps involved in undertaking an analysis of hydrating cements with different levels of limestone powder using the PHREEQC geochemical software with the Notepad++ editor. The analysis begins with determining which solid phases are thermodynamically predicted to precipitate and form using the oxide compositions of commercial CEM I and CEM II/A-L cements. When the phases are known, PHREEQC is programmed to provide predictions of the phase dissolution and phase assemblage over time (here, 1000 days of hydration) as well as the pore solution chemistry. Thermodynamics has been successfully applied to the field of cement hydration to predict …

Application Of Nonlinear Time Series And Machine Learning Algorithms For Forecasting Groundwater Flooding In A Lowland Karst Area, Bidroha Basu, Patrick Morrissey, Laurence Gill
Publications
In karst limestone areas interactions between ground and surface waters can be frequent, particularly in low lying areas, linked to the unique hydrogeological dynamics of that bedrock aquifer. In extreme hydrological conditions, however, this can lead to wide-spread, long-duration flooding, resulting in significant cost and disruption. This study develops and compares a nonlinear time-series analysis based nonlinear autoregressive model with exogenous variables (NARX), machine learning based near support vector regression as well as a linear time-series ARX model in terms of their performance to predict groundwater flooding in a lowland karst area of Ireland. The models have been developed upon …

Evaluation Of Gev Over Lp3 When Predicting Return Period Annual Exceedance For Santa Ana, San Gabriel And Urbanized Regions In California, Maria Beatriz De Paula Macedo
LMU Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this present thesis was to determine whether GEV (Generalized Extreme Value) itself can be a more conservative distribution than LP3 (Log Pearson III) associated with other methods, such as the B17B weighting procedure with Single Grubbs-Beck (SGB) for low outliers, when determining the projected floods in a flood frequency analysis (FFA) for Santa Ana and San Gabriel regions and other urbanized stream gages present in California. In this work, USGS PeakFQ was utilized. From the results obtained, it was possible to state that GEV fitting results were directly affected by the length of the data. When the …

Several non-destructive test (NDT) methods, namely visual inspection, hammer sounding, chain drag, impulse response testing, impact echo testing, ultrasonic (array) echo testing, and under certain conditions ground penetrating radar (GPR) are currently used to detect and estimate the extent of damage such as delaminations in reinforced concrete bridge decks. In this article, we present a self-referencing NDT method that builds on impulse response (IR) testing to detect damage using nonlinear vibration characteristics. The hypothesis is that for an undamaged deck, varying the impact force applied to a specific test point does not affect the corresponding frequency response function (FRF) for …

Denitratation, the selective reduction of nitrate to nitrite, is a novel process and when coupled with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) could achieve resource-efficient biological nitrogen removal of ammonium- and nitrate-laden waste streams. Using a fundamentally-based, first principles approach, this study optimized a stoichiometrically-limited, glycerol-driven denitratation process and characterized mechanisms supporting nitrite accumulation with results that aligned with expectations. At the optimal influent chemical oxygen demand to nitrate ratio of 3.0 : 1 identified, glycerol supported selective nitrate reduction to nitrite (nitrite accumulation ratio, NAR = 62%) and near-complete nitrate conversion (nitrate reduction ratio, NRR = 96%), indicating its viability in …

In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was employed to simulate the pipe flow of 18 self-consolidating and four highly workable concrete mixtures in a 30-m long pumping circuit. Pressure loss (ΔP) in 100- and 125-mm diameter (DP) pipelines was measured under low (1.2–6.2 l/s) and high (8.1–16.4 l/s) flow rates (Q). The numerical simulation was successfully carried out using a two-fluid model and a new variable-viscosity single-fluid approach, namely double-Bingham and tri-viscous models, respectively. The radial variation of rheological properties of the concrete across the pipe section, representing the plug flow, sheared concrete, and lubrication layer (LL) zones was …
