Small-Signal-Stability Enhancement Using A Power-System Stabilizer Based On The Cuckoo-Search Algorithm Against Contingency N-1 In The Sulselrabar 150-Kv System, Muhammad Ruswandi Djalal, Muhammad Yusuf Yunus, Herlambang Setiadi, Awan Uji Krismanto
Makara Journal of Technology
Small-signal stability is one of the main factors limiting power transmission in conventional power systems. This concern is primarily handled by adding damper windings of a synchronous generator and power-system stabilizer (PSS). However, due to the impact of the N-1 contingency, damper windings and a conventional PSS are insufficient to overcome this problem. Proper placement and design of the PSS are crucial for improving stability. One approach to optimizing the placement and tuning of the PSS is to use an artificial-intelligence method. Here, the cuckoo-search algorithm (CSA) is proposed to optimize the PSS tuning and placement. Based on simulation, it …

Prerequisites For Public Acceptance Of Waste-To-Energy Plants: Evidence From Germany And Indonesia, Uwe Lahl, Barbara Zeschmar-Lahl
Prerequisites For Public Acceptance Of Waste-To-Energy Plants: Evidence From Germany And Indonesia, Uwe Lahl, Barbara Zeschmar-Lahl
Makara Journal of Technology
Construction of waste incinerators often encounters resistance from the public. The minimum requirements for the ac- ceptance of these installations include modern air pollution control (APC) technology and safe disposal of residues. Confidence in the statements of government and government agencies as well as on those who support is an important point of acceptance. Independent scientific bodies such as universities can help to make this happen. In the case of the installation of waste into energy (WtE), such scientific support can be the measurement of emissions and their evalua- tion. Many products that enter the waste stream contain heavy metals, …

Makara Journal of Technology
This paper describes a novel method for controlling active prosthetics by integrating surface electromyography (sEMG) and electroencephalograph signals to improve its intuitiveness. This paper also compares the new method (RTA-2) with other existing methods (AND and OR) for controlling active prosthetics. Based on analysis, RTA-2 features higher true positive rate (TPR) and balanced accuracy (BA) than AND method. On the other hand, the new method (RTA-2) yields lower false detection rate (FPR) than OR method. Analysis also shows that RTA-2 possesses equal TPR, FPR, and BA with the detection of movement intention using sEMG-based system. Although the RTA-2 method shows …

Coax-Fed Dipole-Type Applicator For Hepatic Cancer Rf Ablation, Basari Basari, Aditya Rakhmadi, Kazuyuki Saito
Makara Journal of Technology
Cancer is the third leading cause of mortality in the world and is one of the most difficult diseases to detect and cure. This fact motivates us to investigate a treatment method by using radiofrequency (RF) ablation. RF ablation therapy kills cancer cells by electromagnetically heating them up. The treatment uses an applicator that is inserted into the body to heat the cells. The cancer cells are exposed to a temperature of more than 60 °C in short duration (a few seconds to a few minutes), thereby causing cell destruction locally. To ensure effective treatment, a minimally invasive method is …

Understanding the tradeoff between the information of high-resolution water use data and the costs of smart meters to collect data with sub-minute resolution is crucial to inform smart meter networks. To explore this tradeoff, we first present STREaM, a STochastic Residential water End-use Model that generates synthetic water end-use time series with 10-s and progressively coarser sampling resolutions. Second, we apply a comparative framework to STREaM output and assess the impact of data sampling resolution on end-use disaggregation, post meter leak detection, peak demand estimation, data storage, and meter availability. Our findings show that increased sampling resolution allows more accurate …

Effects Of Surface Treatments On National Bridge Inventory Condition Ratings For Concrete Bridge Decks In Utah, John Taani De Leon
Theses and Dissertations
Although the application of surface treatments on bridge decks is expected to positively impact bridge deck condition, the effectiveness of specific surface treatments on extending bridge deck life has not yet been quantified on Utah bridge decks. Therefore, the objectives of this research were to develop and analyze deterioration curves for bare concrete bridge decks and decks with specific treatments commonly used in Utah. The scope of this study was determined by the types and extent of electronically available data, including selected static inventory information; maintenance, rehabilitation, and reconstruction histories; and National Bridge Inventory (NBI) condition ratings for the bridge …
Measuring And Calculating Current Atmospheric Phosphorous And Nitrogen Loadings On Utah Lake Using Field Samples, Laboratory Methods, And Statistical Analysis: Implication For Water Quality Issues, Jacob Milton Olsen
Theses and Dissertations
Atmospheric nutrient loading and transport though precipitation and dry deposition is one of the least understood yet one of the most important pathways of nutrient transport into many lakes. These nutrients, phosphorus and nitrogen, are essential for aquatic life and often play major roles in algae blooms that occur in lakes and reservoirs. Often heavy algal growth intensifies a variety of water quality problems. Utah Lake may be even more susceptible to atmospheric deposition due to its large surface area to volume ratio and proximity to Great Basin dust sources. In this study, eight months of atmospheric deposition data were …

Structural Identification And Assessment Of The Inverted Tee Girder Bridge System, Garrett P. D. Martindale
Structural Identification And Assessment Of The Inverted Tee Girder Bridge System, Garrett P. D. Martindale
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Inverted Tee (IT) girder bridge system was originally developed in 1996 by the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) and Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) engineers. This bridge system currently accounts for over 110 bridges in Nebraska used for both state highways and local county roads. Excessive transverse and longitudinal deck cracking has been observed and noted in numerous bridge inspection reports. Since the IT girder bridge system is relatively new, limited data and knowledge exist on its structural performance and behavior. This study evaluates the IT girder bridge system by conducting twenty field observations as well as recording accelerometer time …
Modeling Effects Of Rainwater Harvesting Systems On Water Yield Increase And Non-Beneficial Evaporation Reduction To Sustain Agriculture In A Water-Scarce Region Of China, Tennille Wade
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The northwestern region of China, which has an arid/semiarid climate, relies heavily on agriculture to provide food for the growing population. Climate change is affecting water availability in the region, causing long periods of drought and water scarcity followed by shorter periods of heavy rainfall and excess water availability. The ridge and furrow rainwater harvesting systems (RFRWHS) are a means of solving the problem of water scarcity; the systems can replenish soil moisture, reduce non-beneficial evaporation from bare soils, and increase surface water yield. In such a region, the hydrologic cycle is dominated by soil evaporation, leading to minimal surface …

Simplified, Alternative Formulation Of Numerical Simulation Of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell, Russell L. Edwards
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Three-Dimensional proton exchange fuel cell (PEMFC) operation in steady-state is simulated with computational fluid dynamics / multiphysics software that is based upon the finite-element method. PEMFC operation involves the simultaneous simulation of multiple, interconnected physics involving fluid flows, heat transport, electrochemical reactions, and both protonic and electronic conduction. Modeling efforts have varied by how they treat the physics occurring within and adjacent to the membrane-electrode assembly (MEA). Several approaches treat the MEA as part of the computational domain, solving multiple, and coupled conservation equations via the CFD approach within the 3 regions of the MEA. The thickness dimensions of the …
Behavior Of Piled Raft Foundation In Partially Saturated Soils, Salman Alrubaye
Behavior Of Piled Raft Foundation In Partially Saturated Soils, Salman Alrubaye
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Current foundation design practice considers conventional pile group foundation when simpler and rather economical raft foundations do not meet one of the design criteria. However, design requirements could be met by incorporating a reduced number of piles with the raft. Piled Raft foundation (PRF) is a composite foundation in which, the piles and the raft contribute to the total resistance of the foundation.
The objective of this dissertation is to study the behavior of PRF in fully and partially saturated soils. The primary purpose of this study is to develop models capable of estimating the resistance of different types of …
Flexural Behavior And Strength Of Doubly-Reinforced Concrete Beams With Hollow Plastic Spheres, Rutvik R. Patel
Flexural Behavior And Strength Of Doubly-Reinforced Concrete Beams With Hollow Plastic Spheres, Rutvik R. Patel
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This thesis presents the outcome of an investigation into the experimental and theoretical flexural behavior and strength of doubly-reinforced concrete beams with and without hollow plastic spheres. Tests are conducted on two types of beams having simply supported end conditions. To obtain experimental results, a gradually increasing two-point loading is used up to collapse. The experimental load-deflection and load-strain curves are recorded. Theoretical analysis is based on developing non-linear moment-curvature relationships for cross sections with and without hollow spheres. These moment-curvature relationships are then coupled with three separate numerical methods namely, finite difference method, finite integral method and Newmark’s method …
The Evaluation Of Enhancing Biological Phosphorus Removal And Improving Settleability Using Mainstream Hydrocyclones For External Selection, Amanda Carrie Ford
The Evaluation Of Enhancing Biological Phosphorus Removal And Improving Settleability Using Mainstream Hydrocyclones For External Selection, Amanda Carrie Ford
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Hydrocyclones, which receive mixed liquor tangentially, separate lighter solids from more dense solids through their tapered shape. Increasing the velocity of liquid as it moves downward allows for the selection of a desired solids fraction. Limited research has been conducted utilizing 20 m3hr-1 hydrocyclones, with the intent of improving settleability and biological phosphorus removal (Bio-P) for mainstream processes. Improved settleability would allow for increased capacity in the secondary clarifiers which prevents the loss of biomass and subsequent treatment disruption, especially during wet weather scenarios. In addition, treatment intensification can be accomplished by maintaining a higher mixed liquor …
Techno-Economic And Life Cycle Assessment Of Hydrothermal Processing Of Microalgae For Biofuels And Co-Product Generation, Andrew P. Bessette
Techno-Economic And Life Cycle Assessment Of Hydrothermal Processing Of Microalgae For Biofuels And Co-Product Generation, Andrew P. Bessette
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Traditional processing methods of algae to biofuels require dewatering after harvesting of the algae before the lipids can be extracted. This is typically the most energy intensive and therefore the most expensive step. Old Dominion University (ODU) has successfully utilized a flash hydrolysis (a kind of hydrothermal) process where proteins are solubilized into the liquid phase of product and the remainder lipid-rich, low nitrogen product is separated into a solid phase. The solid phase (lipid-rich) is then an ideal candidate for biofuel feedstock and the liquid phase, or hydrolysate, can be used for coproducts such as a source of nutrients …

Effect Of Inclined Loading On Passive Force-Deflection Curves And Skew Adjustment Factors, Joshua Rex Curtis
Theses and Dissertations
Skewed bridges have exhibited poorer performance during lateral earthquake loading in comparison to non-skewed bridges (Apirakvorapinit et al. 2012; Elnashai et al. 2010). Results from numerical modeling by Shamsabadi et al. (2006), small-scale laboratory tests by Rollins and Jessee (2012), and several large-scale tests performed by Rollins et al. at Brigham Young University (Franke 2013; Marsh 2013; Palmer 2013; Smith 2014; Frederickson 2015) led to the proposal of a reduction curve used to determine a passive force skew reduction factor depending on abutment skew angle (Shamsabadi and Rollins 2014). In all previous tests, a uniform longitudinal load has been applied …
Micropollutant-Free Nutrient Recovery: Adsorption Of Micropollutants On Ion Exchangers And Biosolids-Derived Biochar, Yiran Tong
Dissertations (1934 -)
The presence of excessive nutrients in treated wastewater effluent is a growing concern in terms of water quality and ecological balance. Thus, removal of nutrients is of great interest. Moreover, the removed nutrients can be recovered in forms amenable for agricultural reuse, which yields a sustainable supply of nonrenewable phosphorus that can be used to support global food production. As nutrient recovery gains interest, it is essential that the products be free of harmful contaminants. One class of contaminants of great concern is organic micropollutants. To help address these issues, this study evaluated the fate and impact of micropollutants during …

Santa Clara University’s new law building, Charney Hall, was constructed in 2018 using steel and concrete, but was redesigned by this team using Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) and Glue- Laminated Timber (glulams). Charney Hall is a non-symmetric, incongruent structure with large open rooms up to 6,000 square feet. Glulams are made of several parallel planks of wood glued together with structural epoxy to obtain higher strength in the longitudinal direction. CLT panels are similar to glulams, but the longitudinal grains of wood planks are oriented in perpendicular layers in order to increase strength along the weak and strong axes of the …
Performance Prediction Of Concrete Deep Beams Containing Cutouts Internally- Reinforced With Composite Bars, Somoud Jebril Arabasi
Performance Prediction Of Concrete Deep Beams Containing Cutouts Internally- Reinforced With Composite Bars, Somoud Jebril Arabasi
Theses
The development of code provisions for the use of strut-and-tie model (STM) in structural design has been hindered by great uncertainties due to the lack of experimental evidences. The problem becomes more complex when the conventional steel reinforcing bars around disturbed regions are replaced by non-metallic composite reinforcement. This research aimed to investigate the structural behavior of concrete deep beams with cutouts internally reinforced with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars around regions of discontinuities. Different STMs were developed for the design of GFRP-reinforced concrete deep beams. The models were analyzed through the use of ACI 318 (2014) and CSA S806 …
Simplified Approach For Structural Evaluation Of Flexible Pavements At The Network Level, Karthikeyan Loganathan
Simplified Approach For Structural Evaluation Of Flexible Pavements At The Network Level, Karthikeyan Loganathan
Civil Engineering Theses
Currently, there is no simple procedure available to identify structurally weak pavement sections using Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) data at the network level (e.g., city, state or province). A simple method is needed to determine the structural condition of pavement sections that can be directly implemented and automated in the current pavement databases. The method needs to be simple enough to be used with a network level FWD database for the purpose of numerically ranking pavement sections at the network level from good to poor. Backcalculation has been utilized to obtain layer moduli and determine overlay (new added surface pavement …
