Hollow Massive Timber Panels: A High-Performance, Long-Span Alternative To Cross Laminated Timber, William Graham Montgomery
Hollow Massive Timber Panels: A High-Performance, Long-Span Alternative To Cross Laminated Timber, William Graham Montgomery
All Theses
Since the development of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), there has been a surge in interest in massive timber buildings. Furthermore, recent conceptual and feasibility designs of massive timber towers of 30 or more stories indicate that performance of mass timber structural elements can compete with other building materials in the commercial industry (MGB Architecture and Design et al.). However, in order for massive timber to penetrate the commercial market even further, a solution is needed for long-span massive timber floor systems. Unfortunately, CLT falls short in this area and is unable to span long distances. The hollow massive timber (HMT) …

Anaerobic And Aerobic Biodegradation Of The Oil Dispersant Components 1,2-Propanediol And 2-Butoxyethanol In Seawater, Benjamin Rhiner
All Theses
Oil spills are a recurring issue associated with fossil fuel consumption. The largest accidental oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry was the Deepwater Horizon explosion and seafloor well blowout, where the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded and sank, allowing the well to gush uncontrolled from April 20, 2010, until it was capped on July 15, 2010, releasing an estimated 210,000,000 gallons of oil. Oil dispersants were used in unprecedented quantities during the cleanup response to the spill with a total of 1,840,000 gallons of the dispersant COREXIT being applied. The goal of this research was to evaluate …
Workability-Integrated Mixture Proportioning Method For Pervious Concrete, Betiglu Eshete Jimma
Workability-Integrated Mixture Proportioning Method For Pervious Concrete, Betiglu Eshete Jimma
All Dissertations
Portland cement pervious concrete (PCPC) is increasingly gaining attention as a preferred material in selected pavement applications. This concrete has several unique features, which makes it an environment-friendly construction material. Its porous structure allows precipitation to infiltrate directly into the ground. This reduces accumulation of a large amount of storm water in areas of heavy storms and recharges the ground water system, thus reducing the need for expensive storm water collection and treatment systems. Also, it allows the pollutants on pavement surfaces such as motor oil, etc. to drain into the subsurface be treated by native microbes in the soil, …
Building Envelope Failure Assessment Of Residential Developments Subjected To Hurricane Wind Hazards, James Grayson
Building Envelope Failure Assessment Of Residential Developments Subjected To Hurricane Wind Hazards, James Grayson
All Dissertations
An unfortunate global precedent has been set by hurricane wind hazard events that illustrate the importance of building resilient coastal communities. Although community resilience is heavily dependent upon the socioeconomic response of the community before, during, and after a hazard event, it is also dependent on the vulnerability of the community to a disaster. Therefore, one way that structural engineers can assist communities in becoming more resilient is to investigate and implement methods that mitigate the 'initial shock' experienced by a residential development subjected to a hazard event. The focus of this research was to develop a mechanics-based building envelope …

Projections Of Future Us Design Wind Speeds Due To Climate Change For Estimating Hurricane Losses, Fangqian Liu
All Dissertations
Hurricane is among the most dangerous and costliest natural hazards that affect the coastal environment of the United States (U.S.) every year. Hurricane activities have been observed to change in many aspects since the last century including the changes in both intensity and annual storm frequency. The extent to which aspect of climate change contributes to the variation in hurricane activities from long-term historical statistics is still not clearly understood at this point. This study examines the impacts of two climate change effects (change in annual storm frequency and sea surface temperature) on future U.S. design wind speeds for the …
The Effects Of Amine Structure, Chloramine Species And Oxidation Strategies On The Formation Of N-Nitrosodimethylamine, Meric Selbes
The Effects Of Amine Structure, Chloramine Species And Oxidation Strategies On The Formation Of N-Nitrosodimethylamine, Meric Selbes
All Dissertations
To comply with the increasingly stringent disinfection by-product (DBP) regulations in the United States, many water treatment plants have been switching from chlorination to chloramination in the last decade. Although chloramination reduces the formation of regulated DBPs such as trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids, it causes the formation of nitrosamines. Nitrosamines are a class of compounds that are probable human carcinogens, mutagens and teratogens at concentrations as low as 0.2 ng/L. In particular, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is the most frequently detected nitrosamine in distribution systems in the United States. Although, nitrosamines are currently not regulated by the USEPA, they have been recently …

Fluid Mud Gravity Currents Through Emergent Aquatic Vegetation, Nazli Yilmaz
All Dissertations
In this theoretical and experimental investigation, the propagation dynamics of the fluid-mud underflows form in pipeline dredge disposal operations in the designated areas are studied. These areas such as wetlands, nearshore waters are typically covered with stiff, cylindrical, emergent aquatic vegetation. The main goals of this study are to propose mathematical formulations for the bottom shear force and drag force of emergent stiff aquatic vegetation acting on the gravity current, and to present novel propagation modeling approaches. To be able to predict these forces, a friction coefficient (for the bottom shear force), and a drag coefficient (for vegetation skin friction …
Assessment Of Nitrifying Bacteria In Massard Plant Using Molecular Tools, Jennifer Puanani Holmes-Smith
Assessment Of Nitrifying Bacteria In Massard Plant Using Molecular Tools, Jennifer Puanani Holmes-Smith
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The discharge of nutrients (such as nitrogen and phosphorus) from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) has become an increasingly important issue in the United States. Ammonia (NH3) is a common contaminant found in domestic wastewater and agricultural runoff. It can cause toxicity in fish if left untreated. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends low national criteria for ammonia limits in freshwater. With these greater restrictions, ammonia-nitrogen limit compliance (5 mg/L) has become an issue at the Massard WWTP in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The purpose of this research is to assess the ammonia removal in the Massard WWTP in order …

Treatment Of Nitrogen Oxides By Chlorella Vulgaris Algae In Photobioreactors, Steven Shihady
Master's Theses
The effectiveness of algae to treat NO2and NO in simulated flue gas was tested using Chlorella vulgaris in photobioreactors (PBRs) using NOxconcentrations between 30 ppm to 780 ppm. NOxdissolved and reacted in water to form NO3-and NO2-in the PBR growth medium, providing a nitrogen source that the algae readily assimilated for cell synthesis. Three 20-L photobioreactors were inoculated with a pure culture of C. vulgaris prepared in Bristol growth medium and algae were grown in the PBRs at 25°C and pH of 7.0 in a modified Bristol medium …
Development And Use Of Moisture-Suction Relationships For Geosynthetic Clay Liners, Jacob Law Risken
Development And Use Of Moisture-Suction Relationships For Geosynthetic Clay Liners, Jacob Law Risken
Master's Theses
A laboratory test program was conducted to determine the moisture-suction relationships of geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs). Moisture-suction relationships were determined by combining suction data from pressure plate tests, contact filter paper tests, and relative humidity tests, then fitting water retention curves (WRCs) to the data. WRCs were determined for wetting processes and drying processes in terms of gravimetric moisture content and volumetric moisture content.
The effects of GCL type, hydration solution, wet-dry cycles, and temperature on the moisture-suction relationships were analyzed. The three GCLs of the test program consisted of configurations of woven and nonwoven geotextiles reinforced with needlepunched fibers. …
Dual-State Kalman Filter Forecasting And Control Theory Applications For Proactive Ramp Metering, Brian Richard Portugais
Dual-State Kalman Filter Forecasting And Control Theory Applications For Proactive Ramp Metering, Brian Richard Portugais
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Deterioration of freeway traffic flow condition due to bottlenecks can be ameliorated with ramp metering. A challenge in ramp metering is that it is not possible to process data in real-time and use the output in a control algorithm. This is due to the fact that by the time processing is completed and a control measure applied, the traffic state will have changed. A solution to this problem is to forecast the traffic state and implement a control measure based on the forecast.
A dual-state Kalman filter was used to forecast traffic data at two locations on a freeway (I-84). …
Sediment Transport Conditions Near Culverts, Kyle Jay Rowley
Sediment Transport Conditions Near Culverts, Kyle Jay Rowley
Theses and Dissertations
Relatively little work has been done to understand how coarse grained sediments behave near culverts. Particularly for embedded culverts, sediment transport must be understood to achieve sustainable culvert designs for aquatic organism passage and peak discharge requirements. Several culvert sites in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah were studied through the spring flood season of 2014. Data obtained from the culvert sites were used to create numerical models with the Sedimentation and River Hydraulics Two-Dimensional model. The field sites and numerical model were used to study deposition of sediments at the entrance to culverts, sediment replenishment inside culverts, and lateral fining …
A Study Of The Variability Versus The Assumed Constancy Of Manning's N, Tyler G. Allen
A Study Of The Variability Versus The Assumed Constancy Of Manning's N, Tyler G. Allen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Culverts have traditionally been designed to a minimal size to pass a specific design flood. The traditional culvert designs may result in a localized increase in velocity which can result in a blockage of animal or fish movement across a barrier effectively changing the ecosystem surrounding a number of affected species. While hydraulic loss coefficients are relatively well defined for such traditional culverts, the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) identified a need for further study of these coefficients for culverts more conducive to fish and animal passage.
A research team headed by Dr. Blake Tullis of Utah State University …
Increased Span Length For The Mgs Long-Span Guardrail System, Nicholas A. Weiland
Increased Span Length For The Mgs Long-Span Guardrail System, Nicholas A. Weiland
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Long-span guardrail systems have been recognized as an effective means of shielding low-fill culverts while minimizing construction efforts and limiting culvert damage and repair. The current MGS long-span design provided the capability to span unsupported lengths up to 25 ft (7.6 m) without the use of nested guardrail. The excellent performance of the MGS long-span system in full-scale crash tests suggested that longer span lengths may be possible with the current design.
A detailed analysis of the MGS long-span guardrail system was performed using the finite element software program LS-DYNA®. It was shown that the MGS long-span design …
Exploring Pedestrian Responsive Traffic Signal Timing Strategies In Urban Areas, Sirisha Murthy Kothuri
Exploring Pedestrian Responsive Traffic Signal Timing Strategies In Urban Areas, Sirisha Murthy Kothuri
Dissertations and Theses
The role of walking in the development of healthy, livable communities is being increasingly recognized. In urban areas, intersections represent locations where different modes converge, and are often viewed as deterrents to walking. This is due to the unwarranted and often unnecessary delays imposed by signal timing policies for pedestrians and increased potential for conflicts. Traditional signal timing design prioritizes vehicles over pedestrians leading to undesirable consequences such as large delays and risky pedestrian behaviors. Pedestrians are accommodated in a manner that is designed to cause least interruption to the flow of motor vehicles. This lack of pedestrian accommodation at …

Development Of Improved Electrodeposition Method For Repair Of Reinforced Concrete Structures, Takahiro Nishida, Nobuaki Otsuki, Atsushi Saito
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Deterioration of reinforced concrete members and their repair methods have been reported in various concrete published reports. Electrodeposition method is one of these repair methods for repairing deteriorated concrete members using an electrochemical mechanism. The purposes of the electrodeposition method are to fill cracks in concrete and to coat the concrete surface by electrodeposits of chemical compounds. This can be accomplished by passing a weak direct current (1.0–3.0 A/m2 of concrete surface area) between a reinforcing steel bar (cathode) in concrete and an external electrode (anode) located in an external solution near the concrete surface. This method also accomplishes …

Heavy Metal Desorption From Cement Hydrates Caused By Chloride Solutions, Akihiko Hayashi, Yuko Ogawa, Kenji Kawai
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
After the demolition of concrete structures, it is expected to recycle the whole of the demolished concrete. As of now, however, it is difficult to recycle the fine powders generated in the processes of demolition of concrete and manufacture of recycled aggregate because these powders may contain heavy metals exceeding the soil environmental standard, and such powders are disposed finally. It is well known that heavy metals are easily adsorbed on cement hydrates. To promote the total recycling of demolished concrete, it is important to remove adsorbed heavy metals from the fine powders easily. This article tried to gain a …

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) is obtained as a by-product from cogeneration combustion boilers in sugar industries. Bagasse ash is mainly composed of reactive silica and can be used as pozzolanic material in concrete. Previous studies have reported that the utilization of SCBA as pozzolanic material in concrete can significantly improve its performance. A comprehensive investigation of durability performance of bagasse ash in concrete is not available in existing literature. In all previous studies, raw bagasse ash was ground to cement fineness and directly used in the concrete for the performance evaluation, without suitable characterization. Development of SCBA-based Portland pozzolana cement …

One kind of specimen is common concrete without fly ash, whereas the other two kinds of specimens are mixed with fly ash. The results show that the surface chloride ion concentration ranges from 0.295 to 0.777 wt.% for the immersed concrete samples in this study; in the initial stage of immersion, the concrete surface chloride ion concentration is affected by added fly …
The Analysis Of The Internal Forces In Strengthened Old Concrete Bridge Subject To Vehicular Load By Transforming Simply Supported Into Continuous System, Huanan He, Lijuan Xin
The Analysis Of The Internal Forces In Strengthened Old Concrete Bridge Subject To Vehicular Load By Transforming Simply Supported Into Continuous System, Huanan He, Lijuan Xin
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
In the past half century, large numbers of simply supported bridges were constructed in China; however, with the passing of years and the increase in the volume of transport, many of the bridges are out of normal service level and even gradually lose their bearing capacity due to overload or environmental influence. Therefore, some strengthening works have to be carried out in order for these old bridges to work well. Among the common strengthening methods, an efficient way to transform a simply supported into a continuous system is widely used in simply supported bridges with small or medium span. After …
Effects Of Stirrups On Bond Behavior Between Concrete And Corroded Steel Bars, Hongwei Lin, Yuxi Zhao, Ming Sun
Effects Of Stirrups On Bond Behavior Between Concrete And Corroded Steel Bars, Hongwei Lin, Yuxi Zhao, Ming Sun
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Steel corrosion leads to the deterioration of bond between concrete and steel bars. The serviceability and ultimate strength of concrete elements within RC structures are hence affected. Many researchers have studied the bond behavior of corroded steel bars. However, very few studies have investigated the effects of confinements on the degradation of bond strength. The present paper proposed a new kind of beam specimen based on which the effects of stirrups on degradation of bond were investigated. The test results proved that stirrups can effectively increase the bond strength between concrete and corroded steel bars.
Saturation Of Air Entrained Voids And Its Implication On The Transport Of Ionic Species In Concrete, Yiwen Bu, Jason Weiss
Saturation Of Air Entrained Voids And Its Implication On The Transport Of Ionic Species In Concrete, Yiwen Bu, Jason Weiss
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Air entrainment is commonly used to improve the durability of concrete materials exposed to freezing and thawing. While the influence of air voids on freeze/thaw damage and salt scaling is frequently studied, the influence of entrained air voids on ionic transport has been studied less frequently. Since ionic transport in concrete materials relies on pore fluid as the medium of conduction, only saturated or partially saturated air voids participate in the transport processes. This paper discusses the conditions under which air voids could become saturated. Specifically, the saturation condition of entrained air voids in laboratory tests and in service is …

Visualization And Quantification Of Solute Diffusivity In Cracked Concrete By X-Ray Ct, Michael Henry, T. Sugiyama, I. S. Darma
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
This paper explores the usage of microfocus X-ray computed tomography (CT) for visualization and quantification of diffusion phenomena in cracked concrete. Mortar specimens of varying shapes (prismatic and cylindrical), crack types (artificial and splitting tensile), and binder compositions (OPC and fly ash) were prepared. Cesium carbonate (Cs2CO3) was used as a tracer in the diffusion test because it has high X-ray absorption due to its high atomic number and thus contrasts with mortar and air voids in the CT images. Image processing and analysis was carried out to visualize and quantify the diffusion behavior in 3D …
