Dissolved Organic Matter Characterization And Impact On Mercury Binding In An Urbanizing Watershed, Mykel Mendes Aug 2011

Dissolved Organic Matter Characterization And Impact On Mercury Binding In An Urbanizing Watershed, Mykel Mendes

Master's Theses

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems, interacting with and controlling the bioavailability and transport of mercury (Hg) and other trace metals through complexation. The complexation of ionic Hg (Hg2+) with DOM can either limit methyl mercury (MeHg) bioavailability or increase MeHg production by stimulating microbial growth. While substantial investigations have examined Hg-DOM interactions in forested ecosystems, little research has been conducted on the Hg-DOM relationship within an urbanized river setting subjected to various anthropogenic sources. The various runoff and pollutant sources vary in DOM quality and character. Three sources of organic matter from the North …

An Integrated Quantitative Risk Analysis Method For Major Construction Accidents Using Fuzzy Concepts And Influence Diagram, Yong-Huang Lin, Chen-Chung Lin, Yaw-Yauan Tyan

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The accident factor identification and risk assessment is an essential requirement for prevention of major construction accidents in the construction project process. An integrated quantitative risk assessment (IQRA) method has been proposed in this paper to overcome the problems of difficult to quantify accident probability for construction industry. The proposed approach employs influence diagram and fuzzy theory to estimate accident probability and to deal with the imprecision inherent to the process of subjective judgment. A case study that evaluates accident probability of diaphragm wall collapse is presented to illustrate the use of this methodology and to demonstrate its capability.

The genetic algorithm was recommended as the best optimization method in this research. The 1D …

Correlation Between Grain Dislocation Density And Orientation For Naturally Deformed Mantle Xenolith From Jagersfontein Mine, Quinton Guerrero, Quinlan Smith Aug 2011

Correlation Between Grain Dislocation Density And Orientation For Naturally Deformed Mantle Xenolith From Jagersfontein Mine, Quinton Guerrero, Quinlan Smith

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Determining the reaction of poly-crystalline structures to induced stress is an extremely difficult problem in contemporary engineering and geology. The main challenge lies in the inhomogeneity of the grains inside of the poly-crystalline structures. To predict the response of a certain polycrystalline structure to a specific stress, you must resort to one of two views on grain interaction, an orientation or propagation based model. For every material there may be certain correlations between the prediction model used and the actual deformation that occurred. Our work centers around describing the correlation of these prediction models with a sample of naturally deformed …

An Investigation Of Concrete Properties In Support Of International Testing Standards, Justine Barnes Aug 2011

An Investigation Of Concrete Properties In Support Of International Testing Standards, Justine Barnes

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Fresh and hardened concrete testing is an important aspect in evaluating the quality of ready mixed concrete. The testing process requires many standards to ensure repeatable results. The research being conducted examines two particular standards ASTM C143-The Slump of Hydraulic Concrete and ASTM 496-Split Tension Testing of Hardened Concrete. The first test compares the slump on a flat and level surface with the slump when tested on a surface which slopes up to 8%. For each batch of concrete created, 30 slump tests are conducted and three 4x8 cylinders were created for compression testing. The second test examines whether the …

Guidelines For Constructing Climate Scenarios, Philip Mote, Levi D. Brekke, Philip B. Duffy, Edwin P. Maurer

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering

Scientists and others from academia, government, and the private sector increasingly are using climate model outputs in research and decision support. For the most recent assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 18 global modeling centers contributed outputs from hundreds of simulations, coordinated through the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 3 (CMIP3), to the archive at the Program for Climate Model Diagnostics and Intercomparison (PCMDI; http://pcmdi3.llnl.gov) [Meehl et al., 2007]. Many users of climate model outputs prefer downscaled data—i.e., data at higher spatial resolution—to direct global climate model (GCM) outputs; downscaling can be statistical [e.g., Meehl et al., …

Constitutive Model For Rate Dependent Behavior Of Clay Internal Geotechnical Report 2011-3, Harry Martindale, Dipanjan Basu

Technical Reports

This report presents a strain-rate dependent plastic constitutive model for clays. Based on the concepts of critical-state soil mechanics and bounding surface plasticity theory, the model reproduces the mechanical response of clays under multi-axial loading conditions and predicts both the drained and undrained behavior. The model parameters are determined for Boston Blue Clay, London Clay and Kaolin Clay, and the performance of the model in simulating the mechanical response of these clays is demonstrated for low to medium strain rates. The sensitivity of each model parameter is checked by perturbing the calibrated values by ±20%. Subsequently, a probabilistic analysis using …

A High Strain-Rate Constitutive Model For Sand With Application In Finite Element Analysis Internal Geotechnical Report 2011-4, William Higgins, Dipanjan Basu

Technical Reports

The report presents a constitutive model for simulating the high strain-rate behavior of sands. Based on the concepts of critical-state soil mechanics, the bounding surface plasticity theory and the overstress theory of viscoplasticity, the constitutive model simulates the high strain-rate behavior of sands under uniaxial, triaxial and multiaxial loading conditions. The model parameters are determined for Ottawa and Fontainebleau sands, and the performance of the model under extreme transient loading conditions is demonstrated through simulations of split Hopkinson pressure bar tests up to a strain rate of 2000/sec. The constitutive model is implemented in a finite element analysis software to …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Arsenic (As) accumulation in rice grains is a threat to human health and marketability of rice products. in an effort to minimize as uptake by rice grains, field experiments were conducted to investigate as accumulation in rice grains of three cultivars in monosodium methane arsonate-treated soil under saturated and flooded water management practices. Results indicated that as concentrations in rice grains were cultivar-dependent and influenced by water management. Soil flooding would substantially enhance the as accumulation with a great variation among cultivars. Extractable as in the soil was positively correlated with sodium dithionite-sodium citrate-sodium bicarbonate solution-extractable Fe, suggesting a strong …

Marine aquaculture is expanding rapidly without reliable quantification of effluents. The present study focuses on understanding the transport of dissolved wastes from aquaculture pens in near-coastal environments using the hydrodynamics code SUNTANS (Stanford Unstructured Nonhydrostatic Terrain-following Adaptive Navier-Stokes Simulator), which employs unstructured grids to compute flows in the coastal ocean at very high resolution. Simulations of a pollutant concentration field (in time and space) as a function of the local environment (bathymetry), flow conditions (tides and wind-induced currents), and the location of the pens were performed to study their effects on the evolution of the waste plume. The presence of …

Probabilistic Assessment Of The Friendship Trail Bridge, Rajan Sen, Gray Mullins, Niranjan Pai Aug 2011

Probabilistic Assessment Of The Friendship Trail Bridge, Rajan Sen, Gray Mullins, Niranjan Pai

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The analysis performed in this study is theoretical and uses data found in the open literature rather than actual data for the bridge. The results presented indicate that the bridge is unlikely to meet a service life of an additional 20 years at reliability levels required by prevailing design codes while foregoing routine maintenance. In the light of the lower than typical reliability predicted by the analysis, more frequent bridge inspections will be needed to maintain safety in the event the bridge is repaired. vii The predictions are critically dependent on assumptions relating to the corrosion rate and statistical distributions …

Evaluation Of Safe Routes To School Programs: Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis Of Parental Decision-Making, Lynn Weigand, Noreen Mcdonald Aug 2011

Evaluation Of Safe Routes To School Programs: Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis Of Parental Decision-Making, Lynn Weigand, Noreen Mcdonald

TREC Final Reports

In the United States, walking to school declined from 42% of 5-18 year olds in 1969 to 16% in 20011. The US Department of Transportation has responded to this dramatic decrease by funding the Safe Routes to School program for $612 million in SAFETEA-LU. The program’s funding emphasize infrastructure improvements such as completing sidewalks and adding crosswalks by requiring between 70% and 90% of funding be allocated toward infrastructure. However, recent research shows that 2 of 3 children who currently are driven to school, but live close enough to walk, do so because it is more convenient for parents. Currently, …

A History-Dependent Nonwetting Phase Trapping Model For Multiphase Flow Characteristic Curves, Christopher Patterson Aug 2011

A History-Dependent Nonwetting Phase Trapping Model For Multiphase Flow Characteristic Curves, Christopher Patterson

All Theses

Characteristic curves used in numerical multiphase flow simulators describe relative permeability-saturation and capillary pressure-saturation relationships for flow simulations. Characteristic curves are typically non-hysteretic; meaning they are monotonic functions of saturation and are limited to a single value for residual saturation. Implications of residual saturation are important for environmental, petroleum, and geologic carbon sequestration modeling. However, hysteretic characteristic curves predict that trapped residual saturation depends on the local saturation history. The use of hysteretic characteristic curves is critical to predicting the residual saturation and ultimately the mobility of a nonwetting phase such as supercritical CO2 or a nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL). …

Influence Of Natural Organic Matter On Plutonium Sorption To Gibbsite, Laura Simpkins Aug 2011

Influence Of Natural Organic Matter On Plutonium Sorption To Gibbsite, Laura Simpkins

All Theses

Understanding plutonium geochemical behavior is imperative to the development of schemes for remediation of plutonium environmental contamination and accurate assessment of risks posed by the disposal of plutonium bearing wastes. The primary mechanism of plutonium mobility in the environment is subsurface transport. The mobility of plutonium is significantly influenced by redox and complexation reactions. Although the effects of surface mediated redox reactions on plutonium's subsurface mobility have been previously documented, little has been done to determine the impact of organic materials on sorption behavior and oxidation states. To adequately predict the behavior of plutonium in the environment, the influence of …

Experimental Coating On Interstate 264 In Jefferson County, Bobby W. Meade, Sudhir Palle, Theodore Hopwood Ii

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A waterborne acrylic coating was applied over a washed and tool cleaned zinc/vinyl system as a maintenance overcoat. The coating has several positive characteristics in that it is “user friendly”, substrate tolerant, develops good adhesion quickly, and is environmentally friendly. There were some issues concerning quality of work in surface preparation and application and in the fact that on two locations bubbles developed in the newly applied coating. The cause of the bubbling has not been determined.

A Three-Dimensional Hydro-Environmental Model Of Dublin Bay, Zeinab Bedri, Michael Buen, Aodh Dowley

Articles

This paper compares a 3-dimensional hydro-ecological model with a 2-dimensional model simulating the distribution and fate of Escherichia Coli (E.Coli) discharges from a sewage treatment plant discharging into Dublin Bay, Ireland. Before being discharged, the effluent from the sewage treatment plant is mixed with cooling water from a thermal generation plant resulting in a warm buoyant sewage plume that can be 7 − 9oC higher than the ambient water in the Bay. The mixing of the stratified plume is complicated by the tidal currents which transport the plume into and out of the estuary. These processes have a direct impact …
