Steel Sheet Sheathing Options For Cold-Formed Steel Framed Shear Wall Assemblies Providing Shear Resistance - Phase 2, Cheng Yu, Yujie Chen

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

Monotonic and cyclic tests on cold-formed steel shear walls sheathed with steel sheets on one side were conducted to (1) verify the published nominal shear strength for 18-mil and 27-mil steel sheets; and (2) investigate the behavior of 6-ft. wide shear walls with multiple steel sheets. This project is the continuation of a completed project titled “Steel Sheet Sheathing Options for Cold-Formed Steel Framed Shear Wall Assemblies Providing Shear Resistance” by Yu (2007). This Phase 2 project confirms the discrepancy in the published nominal strength of 27-mil sheets discovered by the Phase 1 project, and proposes new values. The project …

Strengthening Of Rural Bridges Using Rapid-Installation Frp Technology: Route 63 Bridge No. H356, Phelps County, Dongming Yan, Jianbo Li, Chenglin Wu, Genda Chen

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This report presents the use of externally bonded fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) laminates for the flexural strengthening of a concrete bridge. The bridge selected for this project is a two-span simply supported reinforced concrete slab with no transverse steel reinforcement located in Phelps County, MO. The original construction combined with the presence of very rigid parapets caused the formation of a 1-inch wide longitudinal crack, which resulted in the slab to behave as two separate elements. The structural behavior was verified using a finite element model (FEM) of the bridge. The bridge analysis was performed for maximum loads determined in …

Use Of Steel Slag In Subgrade Applications, Irem Zeynep Yildirim, Monica Prezzi Oct 2009

Use Of Steel Slag In Subgrade Applications, Irem Zeynep Yildirim, Monica Prezzi

JTRP Technical Reports

Steel slag is a by-product of steelmaking and refining processes. In 2006, 10-15 million metric ton of steel slag was generated in the U.S. Out of the total steel slag produced in the U.S. every year, about 50-70% is used as aggregate for road and pavement construction and approximately 15-40% is stockpiled in steel plants and eventually landfilled at slag disposal sites. Since current levels of steel slag stockpiling and landfilling are not sustainable, alternative geotechnical engineering applications for steel slag are being explored to alleviate the slag disposal problem and to help save dwindling natural resources. The main objectives …

Investigation And Mitigation Of Driver Confusion At Modern Roundabouts, Aemal Khattak, Gregory Mcknight, Karen Schurr, Ram R. Bishu

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

Construction of modern roundabouts in place of traditional four-legged intersections is becoming common in the United States. Roundabout negotiation can be confusing for drivers who are not familiar with their use. This research was carried out to identify roundabout elements that play a role in incorrect roundabout negotiation, ascertain driver characteristics prominent in incorrect roundabout negotiation, assess the relative potential for incorrect negotiation amongst different groups of drivers, and suggest measures for improving drivers’ abilities to negotiate roundabouts. Potential for incorrect roundabout negotiation was measured by asking questions in a survey questionnaire related to rules of roundabout negotiation and the …

Thermal Testing Of Innovative Building Insulations, Eoghan Frawley Oct 2009

Thermal Testing Of Innovative Building Insulations, Eoghan Frawley

Masters

The main objective of this research was to design and develop a Hot Box to test the thermal properties of Eco-quilt multi-foil insulation. This work began by gaining an understanding into how multi-foil works, how it is installed and examining different variations of this insulation. It was clear at an early stage that there were two conflicting opinions on the thermal performance of multi-foils. One set of tests claimed that the insulation had a thermal resistance of approximately 5 m2oC/W. These tests were carried out in real weather conditions, where temperatures were fluctuating, although one laboratory test achieved similar results. …

Highway Work Zone Risk Factors And Their Impact On Crash Severity, Yingfeng Li, Yong Bai Oct 2009

Highway Work Zone Risk Factors And Their Impact On Crash Severity, Yingfeng Li, Yong Bai

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Numerous factors may contribute to high-severity crashes in highway work zones. Identifying these factors and then alleviating their impact is a challenging task that traffic engineers and researchers have to confront. In this study, the work zone risk factors that could increase the probability of causing fatalities when severe crashes occur were examined using a comprehensive approach. The researchers first identified the significant risk factors based on a screening process that incorporates both statistical analyses and empirical research findings. They then systematically investigated these factors using logistic regression and frequency analysis techniques. The severe crashes including the fatal crashes between …

A New Look At Richardson Number Mixing Schemes For Equatorial Ocean Modeling, Edward D. Zaron, James N. Moum Oct 2009

A New Look At Richardson Number Mixing Schemes For Equatorial Ocean Modeling, Edward D. Zaron, James N. Moum

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A reexamination of turbulence dissipation measurements from the equatorial Pacific shows that the turbulence diffusivities are not a simple function of the gradient Richardson number. A widely used mixing scheme, the K-profile parameterization, overpredicts the turbulent vertical heat flux by roughly a factor of 4 in the stably stratified region between the surface mixed layer and the Equatorial Undercurrent (EUC). Additionally, the heat flux divergence is of the incorrect sign in the upper 80 m. An alternative class of parameterizations is examined that expresses the mixing coefficients in terms of the large-scale kinetic energy, shear, and Richardson number. These representations …

Optimization Of Two-Way Post-Tensioned Concrete Floor Systems, Gaelyn B. Krauser Oct 2009

Optimization Of Two-Way Post-Tensioned Concrete Floor Systems, Gaelyn B. Krauser

Master's Theses

This thesis investigates a parametric study of a flat plate floor system designed using post-tensioning. The load balanced by the post-tensioning, the slab depth, and the strength of concrete were varied to create the parametric study of a hotel/condominium grid layout. In order to perform the parametric study, research was conducted on the development of post-tensioning, methods of analysis for two-way slab design, and post-tensioning methods of analysis. Design was conducted by hand through a series of Excel spreadsheets and compared to results found using the computer analysis program, ADAPT-PT. The designs found in the parametric study were then used …

Assessment Of Climate Change Impacts On Water Resources Of The Upper Blue Nile River Basin, Ethiopia, U. Kim, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi Sep 2009

Assessment Of Climate Change Impacts On Water Resources Of The Upper Blue Nile River Basin, Ethiopia, U. Kim, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Climate change affects water resources availability of international river basins that are vulnerable to runoff variability of upstream countries especially with increasing water demands. The upper Blue Nile River Basin is a good example because its downstream countries, Sudan and Egypt, depend solely on Nile waters for their economic development. In this study, the impacts of climate change on both hydrology and water resources operations were analyzed using the outcomes of six different general circulation models (GCMs) for the 2050s. The outcomes of these six GCMs were weighted to provide average future changes. Hydrologic sensitivity, flow statistics, a drought index, …

Stormwater Irrigation Volume Iii: Transport Of The Cyanotoxin Microcystin In Groundwater Beneath Stormwater Ponds: Results Of Soil Column Experiments, Martin Wanielista

BMP Trains Research and Publications

As the demand for fresh water increases in central Florida to meet both public supply and irrigation needs, stormwater is increasingly being managed as a resource to help offset possible future declines in aquifer water levels. Water quality is an important consideration when using stormwater for recharge or harvesting. A constituent of recent concern is cyanobacteria (popularly known as blue-green algae) because some of these can produce toxins (cyanotoxins) that are detrimental to animal and human health. Microcystins are the most commonly found type of cyanotoxin in Florida and have been detected in a variety of rivers, natural lakes, and …

Novel Methods For Solving Severely Ill-Posed Linear Equations System, Chein-Shan Liu, Chih-Wen Chang Sep 2009

Novel Methods For Solving Severely Ill-Posed Linear Equations System, Chein-Shan Liu, Chih-Wen Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

We treat an ill-posed system of linear equations by transforming it into a linear system of stiff ordinary differential equations (SODEs), adding a differential term on the left-hand side. In order to overcome the difficulty of numerical instability when integrating the SODEs, Liu [20] has combined nonstandard finite difference method and group-preserving scheme, namely the nonstandard group-preserving scheme (NGPS), to obtain an unconditional stable numerical method for SODEs. This paper applies the NGPS to the SODEs resulting from the ill-posed linear equations, and proves that the new algorithms are unconditional stable. To strengthen accuracy, an L-curve is used to select …

A Complete Stability Theory For The Kirchhoff Thin Plate Under All Kinds Of Actions, Shyh-Rong Kuo, Chih-Chang Chi, Yeong-Bin Yang Sep 2009

A Complete Stability Theory For The Kirchhoff Thin Plate Under All Kinds Of Actions, Shyh-Rong Kuo, Chih-Chang Chi, Yeong-Bin Yang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A complete stability theory for a plate can be constructed by an incremental virtual work equation describing instability effects induced by all kinds of actions. Besides, this incremental virtual work equation should satisfy the rigid body rule, i.e., it should objectively obey the rigid body rule no matter what coordinates systems are adopted. In this paper, a complete nonlinear stability theory for the Kirchhoff thin plate is proposed by using the principle of virtual work and the update Lagrangian formulation. Then, a rigid body motion testing method is developed for examining the incremental virtual work equation. In developing such a …

A Mathematical Revision Of The Landau-Lifshitz Equation, Chein-Shan Liu, Kuo-Ching Chen, Chau-Shioung Yeh Sep 2009

A Mathematical Revision Of The Landau-Lifshitz Equation, Chein-Shan Liu, Kuo-Ching Chen, Chau-Shioung Yeh

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

For the Landau-Lifshitz equation a Lie type linear system representation in the Minkowski space M3 1+ has been derived previously [25]. The internal symmetry group is a proper orthochronous Lorentz group SOo(3, 1), and the numerical method based on the internal symmetry was developed in [29]. This paper derives another four new representations of the Landau-Lifshitz equation. We prove that this equation admits two generators: one conservative and one dissipative, as well as two brackets: Poisson bracket and dissipative bracket. Upon embedding the Landau-Lifshitz equation into a skew-symmetric matrix space, we can develop a double-bracket flow representation. The conserved magnetization …

Method Of Fundamental Solutions With External Source For The Eigenfrequencies Of Waveguides, Chia-Ming Fan, Der-Liang Young, Chia-Lin Chiu Sep 2009

Method Of Fundamental Solutions With External Source For The Eigenfrequencies Of Waveguides, Chia-Ming Fan, Der-Liang Young, Chia-Lin Chiu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study adopts a meshless numerical method, the combination of the method of fundamental solutions (MFS) and method of particular solutions (MPS) following the lead of Reutskiy, to determine the eigenfrequencies of four different waveguides, based on the principle of physical response of a system exposed to external source. The response amplitudes to determine the resonant frequencies for the eigenproblems are used. We use the MFS with external source (MFS-ES) and MPS to solve a sequence of inhomogeneous problems for the determination of the eigenfrequencies. This is an alternative to the typical methods of directly solving the homogeneous matrix system …

Antifouling Properties Of Conductive Rubber Coatings Used For Fishing Nets, Jer-Ruey Huang, Wei-Ting Lin, Ran Huang, Jiann-Kuo Wu Sep 2009

Antifouling Properties Of Conductive Rubber Coatings Used For Fishing Nets, Jer-Ruey Huang, Wei-Ting Lin, Ran Huang, Jiann-Kuo Wu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The purpose of the present study is to develop a new conductive coating for application on fishing nets that can be used as an anode, while submersed in the sea, to generate free chlorine which will in turn inhibit marine biofouling. To confirm the durability and viability of this coating, long-term field tests were carried out in the Nanao harbor in Taiwan. Electrical resistivity tests showed that conductive rubber with a polyaniline coating demonstrates the lowest resistivity: 0.11 Ωm. This sample also generated optimal quantities of free chlorine, which demonstrates antifouling properties. The use of carbon black in conjunction with …

A Novel Approach For Analyzing Severe Crash Patterns On Multilane Highways, Anurag Pande, Mohamed Abdel-Aty Sep 2009

A Novel Approach For Analyzing Severe Crash Patterns On Multilane Highways, Anurag Pande, Mohamed Abdel-Aty

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This study presents a novel approach for analysis of patterns in severe crashes that occur on mid-block segments of multilane highways with partially limited access. A within stratum matched crash vs. non-crash classification approach is adopted towards that end. Under this approach crashes serve as units of analysis and it does not require aggregation of crash data over arterial segments of arbitrary lengths. Also, the proposed approach does not use information on non-severe crashes and hence is not affected by under-reporting of the minor crashes. Random samples of time, day of week, and location (i.e., milepost) combinations were collected for …

Cross-Well Radar Ii: Comparison And Experimental Validation Of Modeling Channel Transfer Function, Arvin Farid, Sophia H. Zhan, Akram N. Alshawabkeh, Carey M. Rappaport

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Close agreement between theory and experiment is critical for adequate understanding and implementation of the Cross-Well Radar (CWR, otherwise known as Cross-Borehole Ground Penetrating Radar) technique, mentioned in a previous paper by the authors. Comparison of experimental results to simulation using a half-space dyadic Green’s function in the frequency domain requires development of transfer functions to transform the experimental data into a compatible form. A Channel Transfer Function (CTF) was developed to avoid having to model the transmitting and receiving characteristics of the antennas. The CTF considers electromagnetic (EM) wave propagation through the intervening media only (soil in this case), …

Beyond Sustainability: The Contractor’S Role In Regenerative System Design, Rebecca Mirsky, Anthony Songer Sep 2009

Beyond Sustainability: The Contractor’S Role In Regenerative System Design, Rebecca Mirsky, Anthony Songer

Construction Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Current business models employ the concept of the triple bottom line to integrate three aspects of sustainability into the organizational process: economic growth, environmental protection and social equity. This concept is evolving toward a regenerative design approach that promotes a triple "top" line, moving accountability to the beginning of the design process by assigning value to a variety of economic, environmental and social factors. There is an increasingly important need for proactive participation from the construction community in this new generation of sustainability efforts. Otherwise, there will be a widening gap between design and construction, in which the contractor role …

Cross-Well Radar I: Experimental Simulation Of Cross-Well Tomography And Validation, Arvin Farid, Akram N. Alshawabkeh, Carey M. Rappaport

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper explains and evaluates the potential and limitations of conducting Cross-Well Radar (CWR) in sandy soils. Implementing the experiment and data collection in the absence of any scattering object, and in the presence of an acrylic plate (a representative of dielectric objects, such as DNAPL (dense non-aqueous phase liquid) pools, etc.), as a contrasting object in a water-saturated soil is also studied. To be able to image the signature of any object, more than one pair of receiving and transmitting antennas are required. The paper describes a method to achieve repeatable, reliable, and reproducible laboratory results for different transmitter-receiver …

Pesticide Fact Sheet: Mammalian Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (Gnrh) [Gonacon] Sep 2009

Pesticide Fact Sheet: Mammalian Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (Gnrh) [Gonacon]

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Available data provide adequate information to support the conditional registration of GnRH as a tool for management of nuisance white-tailed deer.

White-tailed deer have been classified by EPA as a public health pest because they are a host for blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis), more commonly known as deer ticks, which are a carrier of Lyme disease.

In many urban and suburban areas white-tailed deer populations have become over abundant and are considered a year-round nuisance causing many human-wildlife conflicts such as destruction on gardens, landscapes and golf courses as well as a cause of numerous vehicle accidents. According …

Classification Of Organic Soils, Pao-Tsung Huang, Mital Patel, Maria Caterina Santagata, Antonio Bobet Sep 2009

Classification Of Organic Soils, Pao-Tsung Huang, Mital Patel, Maria Caterina Santagata, Antonio Bobet

JTRP Technical Reports

The presence of organics in soils is generally associated with high compressibility, significant secondary compression, often unsatisfactory strength characteristics, and low unit weight. As a result of the above, many state DOTs (Departments of Transportation) in the United States have strict limits on the maximum value of the organic content (2-7%) that can be present in soils to be used as sub grades and backfills. The loss on ignition test is the most widely used technique for measuring organic content. However, especially for low organic content soils, this method can lead to significantly overestimate the true organic content. As a …

Worker Injury Prevention Strategies, Carlos A. Ferreira-Diaz, Alma Torres-Zapata, Christopher A. Nanovic, Dulcy M. Abraham

JTRP Technical Reports

As the trend of increased highway construction and/or rehabilitation continues to grow, the public often demands that delays in work zones be kept to a minimum. Thus, the flow of traffic through the construction zone must be maintained while performing pavement maintenance/ repair/ reconstruction activities. At the same time, the safety of personnel and property in highway construction work zones must be ensured. Three types of risks are encountered by construction and maintenance workers in construction workzones: (a) risks due to underprotection or lack of protection against potential hazards (including lack of hearing protection, eye protection, respiratory protection); (b) effect …
