Nowadays, dynamic changes arc significantly driving forces to companies to re-focusing on utilizing of people and research based on organizational objectives. Organisations need to provide a performance measurement system (PMS) to evaluate the resource utilisation so that they can strategically manage and properly control to achieve their objectives and goals. PM's role is dominantly increasing and it is growing in its scope and importance. However, the literature on performance measurement (PM) has changed over the past few decades. Due to limitation of traditional PMS that focusing on financial measures (ROI. cash flow), modern PMS focusing on non-financial measures such as …

We present a new method based upon the paper of Volokh and Vilney (2000) that produces highly accurate and stable solutions to very ill-conditioned multiquadric (MQ) radial basis function (RBF) asymmetric collocation methods for partial differential equations (PDEs). We demonstrate that the modified Volokh-Vilney algorithm that we name the improved truncated singular value decomposition (IT-SVD) produces highly accurate and stable numerical solutions for large values of a constant MQ shape parameter, c, that exceeds the critical value of c based upon Gaussian elimination.

Assessing Safety On Dutch Freeways With Data From Infrastructure-Based Intelligent Transportation Systems, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Anurag Pande, Abhishek Das, Willem Jan Knibbe
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Most freeway traffic surveillance technologies deployed around the world remain infrastructure based, with underground loop detectors being the most common among them. A proactive application for traffic surveillance data recently explored for some freeways in the United States is the estimation of real-time crash risk. The application involves establishing relationships between historical crashes and archived traffic data collected before those crashes. In these studies, crash occurrence on freeway sections has been related to temporal-spatial variation in speed and high lane occupancy. Critical modeling questions that remain unanswered relate to transferability of such an approach. This study attempts to address the …

Understanding The Impact Of A Recent Hurricane On Mobilization Time During A Subsequent Hurricane, Vinayak V. Dixit, Anurag Pande, Essam Radwan, Mohamed Abdel-Aty
Civil and Environmental Engineering
It is not uncommon for a region to be affected by multiple hurricanes in a span of a few weeks. The behavior of the evacuees during a subsequent hurricane in the same season is affected by the damage to the infrastructure and to the vehicles and assets belonging to evacuees, as well as by the psychological impact of the preceding hurricane. One such behavioral aspect that affects traffic-loading rates during a hurricane is the evacuation delay or mobilization time. In this study, "mobilization time for an evacuee" is defined as the difference between the time at which the decision to …
The Viability Of Real-Time Prediction And Prevention Of Traffic Accidents, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Anurag Pande
The Viability Of Real-Time Prediction And Prevention Of Traffic Accidents, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Anurag Pande
Civil and Environmental Engineering
This paper addresses a novel idea of real-time traffic safety improvement on freeways. First by predicting traffic crashes on the freeway mainline using on-line loop detector data, then by proposing ITS remediation strategies to reduce the crash risk in real-time. The results of the predictive models were found to be consistent with the probable mechanisms of crashes under different flow regimes. Using micro-simulation software and the crash potential determined through the models developed in this research to associate traffic characteristics with the risk of a crash occurring, several mitigation strategies were attempted to improve safety in real-time. The before (pre-ITS) …
Performance Evaluation Of Vip Latrines In The Upper West Region Of Ghana , James W. Dumpert
Performance Evaluation Of Vip Latrines In The Upper West Region Of Ghana , James W. Dumpert
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
The prevalence of Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) latrines in Ghana suggests that the design must have a high user acceptance. The two key factors attributed to user acceptance of a VIP latrine over an alternative latrine design, such as the basic pit latrine, are its ability to remove foul odors and maintain low fly populations; both of which are a direct result of an adequate ventilation flow rate.
Adequate ventilation for odorless conditions in a VIP latrine has been defined by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the World Bank, as an air flow rate equivalent to 6 air …
The Challenges Of Using Service Learning In Construction Management Curricula, Casey Cline, Michael Kroth
The Challenges Of Using Service Learning In Construction Management Curricula, Casey Cline, Michael Kroth
Construction Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
The use of experiential learning as a pedagogical mechanism to facilitate the learning of skills taught in the classroom has become common in college curricula. Service learning and community engagement models are frequently used to combine academic skills with "real-world" experience to foster understanding, and to largely broaden the perspective of the learner. Service-learning and community engagement are both commonly used in construction management (CM) curricula to allow the CM learner to develop a greater understanding of construction materials, processes, and management techniques presented in CM coursework. CM educators, in an effort to formalize the experiential learning process into course …

Simulation And Parametric Analyses Of A Tubular Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Stack Using Aspen Plus, Wayne Doherty, Anthony Reynolds, David Kennedy
Other resources
In the context of climate change and increasing energy conversion efficiency solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are likely to play an important role in the production of electricity. The tubular SOFC configuration is considered to be the most advanced and is approaching commercialisation. A major advantage of SOFCs over other types of fuel cells is that they can utilise a wide spectrum of fuels (natural gas, coal and biomass syn-gas). This is due to its high operating temperature, which also makes them suitable for integration with gas turbines and for cogeneration. A R&D project is underway to develop a computer …

Characteristics Of Urban Arterial Crashes Relative To Proximity To Intersections And Injury Severity, Abhishek Das, Anurag Pande, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Joseph B. Santos
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Intersections of an urban arterial corridor may influence crashes that occur even beyond their physical area. This study examines the effect of the gradual change in the distance of intersection influence on crash characteristics that explain injury severity outcomes of arterial crashes. The approach adopted involves simultaneous estimation of two variables: an ordinal variable representing crash-injury severity and a binary variable representing crash location (intersection versus segment crashes). The dichotomy in crash location is based on the threshold distance of intersection influence. Five sets of bivariate simultaneous models were estimated by using five threshold distances of influence varying from 0 …
Discovering Indirect Associations In Crash Data Through Probe Attributes, Anurag Pande, Mohamed Abdel-Aty
Discovering Indirect Associations In Crash Data Through Probe Attributes, Anurag Pande, Mohamed Abdel-Aty
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Association analysis is a popular data-mining technique for detecting dependencies in transaction databases. The algorithms for discovery of association rules attempt to find the products that tend to sell together. For this purpose, one can treat crashes as individual transactions and crash characteristics as the "products" part of that transaction to discover patterns of the crash characteristics that tend to coexist. The a priori algorithm to search for association rules employs the lower bound on intersection (i.e., joint) frequency of two crash characteristics to ensure that only significant patterns are discovered. Hence, remarkable associations relating crash characteristics that have joint …

Adaptive Management: Background For Stakeholders In The Missouri River Recovery Program, Heida Diefenderfer, Craig Fleming
United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
Since adaptive ecosystem management was described, the need for such a process has been widely recognized by restoration ecologists and managers. In the United States, for example, the National Research Council (NRC) has recommended that ecological restoration projects be designed and executed according to the principles of adaptive planning and management. The NRC report highlights the fact that inflexible restoration goals and plans are unlikely to succeed given that knowledge of natural and social systems is imperfect. As the restoration ecologist John Cairns, Jr., stated: “whatever restoration measures we take, the outcome is highly uncertain.” The reliable existence …
Missouri River Recovery Program: Least Tern And Piping Plover: Endangered & Threatened Species
Missouri River Recovery Program: Least Tern And Piping Plover: Endangered & Threatened Species
United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
Maintaining a healthy Missouri River, including protecting species that live along the river, is a top priority for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The least tern and piping plover are shorebirds that use the Missouri River for breeding habitat. In 1985 the least tern was listed as endangered, and the piping plover as threatened, within the Missouri River basin. Today, the Corps’ conservation efforts are helping the recovery of these species.
While both birds nest elsewhere, the sandbars of the Missouri River and reservoir shorelines are important to their survival. In fact, in 2002 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife …

Missouri River Recovery Program: Shallow Water Habitat Program
Missouri River Recovery Program: Shallow Water Habitat Program
United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
Historically, the Missouri River was a shallow, shifting river well known for muddy waters and rapidly changing channel conditions. The dynamic river provided a wide range of depth, velocity and sediment conditions. Within this environment, the amount of shallow water habitat was quite prevalent, with estimated amounts of more than 100 acres per mile. Shallow water habitat is an aquatic area less than five feet deep where the river flows slowly – less than two feet per second.
Over the years, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been charged by Congress to remove snags, protect banks, construct navigation channels …

A Comparison Of Load Test Data And Predicted Behavior Of Augercast Piles In Layered Soils, John Hudson
A Comparison Of Load Test Data And Predicted Behavior Of Augercast Piles In Layered Soils, John Hudson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The use of auger cast-in-place (ACIP) pilings is very common in Florida; however, there is a significant degree of uncertainty in determining the actual capacity of the pilings, especially when the pilings are installed through layers of cohesive soils. Therefore, there is a need to improve upon the existing methods of predicting the behavior of ACIP piles in layered soils. As a result, the primary objective of this study is to determine if a significant difference exists between the accepted methods of pile load test analysis. Provided a significant difference is noted, the secondary objective would be to determine if …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The risk associated with earthquake hazards on highway systems is dependent on the complexity of a network and its redundancy in providing traffic flow. Earthquake loss estimation studies can provide decision makers with an appreciation of the importance of having a highway network resistant to earthquakes and information to make the network resistant to these events. The direct economic loss was estimated for a major metropolitan area, St. Louis, for a series of earthquake scenarios. The primary component of the study was damage to bridges within the highway system. The study zone covers the St. Louis metropolitan area and its …
Effective Area And Effective Volume Calculations For Ceramic Test Specimens, Rahul Jain
Effective Area And Effective Volume Calculations For Ceramic Test Specimens, Rahul Jain
ETD Archive
Calculation of effective volume and/or effective area is a key step in estimating reliability of ceramic component life cycle. Most common tests performed to assess the strength and reliability of components made from ceramics are bend bar specimens tested in three-point and four-point flexure, C-ring and O-ring specimen under diametral compressive or tensile loads and biaxial ring-on-ring specimens. ASTM closed form solutions for the effective volume and area exists for these specimen geometries which are based on classical theories with underlying assumptions. In general the closed form expressions are valid for limited specimen geometry bounds. An alternative numerical approach has …

Preservation And Analytical Procedures For The Analysis Of Chloro-S-Triazines And Their Chlorodegradate Products In Drinking Waters Using Direct Injection Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Glynda A. Smith, Barry V. Pepich, David J. Munch
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
A direct injection, liquid chromatography tandemmass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS)method has been developed for the analysis of the chloro-s-triazine herbicides and their degradates in finished drinking water. The target compounds in the method were selected based on their inclusion in a common mechanism group (CMG) because of their ability to induce a similar toxic effect through a common mechanism of toxicity. The target list includes the chloro-s-triazines (atrazine, simazine, cyanazine, and propazine) and their dealkylated degradates (desethylatrazine, desisopropylatrazine, and diaminochlorotriazine). Potential matrix effects are minimized by the use of individual isotopically enriched internal standards. Analyte stability in finished …

The developed land area of the US increased by 14.2 million hectares between 1982 and 2003. Along with a projected US population increase to more than 360 million individuals by 2030 is an expected continuation of expanding rural land development. Related to population growth, rural land development and the associated loss of rural open space are expected to have a number of social, economic, and ecological implications. To gain greater insight into land development patterns, we used US Census Bureau and National Resources Inventory data to quantify per-housing-unit rates of land development during recent decades and to model future land …

The goal of this study is to describe linkages between the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) air monitoring data, specifically how the linkage method affects characteristics and exposure estimates of study samples and estimated associations between exposure and health. In the USA, nationally representative health data are collected in the NHIS and annual air quality data are collected by the EPA. The linkage of these data for research is not straightforward and the choices made may introduce bias into results. The 2000–2003 NHIS and air quality data for six air pollutants were linked by residential …

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms represent one of the most serious ecological stressors in lakes, rivers, estuaries and marine environments. When there are persistent or frequent blooms with high biomass of cyanobacterial cells, colonies or filaments in the water, a wide range of impacts on the ecosystem may occur. These are well established in the scientific literature and are summarized in Paerl et al. (2001). Blooms may shade the water and thereby inhibit growth of other primary producers including phytoplankton, benthic algae and vascular plants and may elevate pH, particularly in poorly buffered waters. High population densities of large cyanobacteria interfere with …
