Experimental Studies To Address Strengths Of Limestone Cores, Sulfate Heave Problems In Limestone Cores And Tunnel Lining, Vivekananda Chikyala
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Sulfate induced heave is a common scenario in tunnels located on sedimentary rocks containing Pyrites. Pyrite oxidation produces Gypsum which is a major source of natural sulfates. DART NC -1B tunnel is located in Dallas, north Texas. Dallas is located on sedimentary rocks with high Pyrite content and has a history of sulfate induced heave problems in several projects. In spring 2005 & 2006, the shotcrete liner in DART NC-1B tunnel showed cracking associated with water leaks. Considering the local geology and the history of the tunnel, researchers at The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) suspected probable occurrence of …
Performance Studies On Rigid Pavement Sections Built On Stabilized Sulfate Soils, Deepti Vasudev
Performance Studies On Rigid Pavement Sections Built On Stabilized Sulfate Soils, Deepti Vasudev
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Soils of Southeast Arlington are highly expansive and rich in sulfates. They undergo sulfate induced heaving when traditional calcium based stabilizers are used for soil stabilization (Puppala et al. 1998). Traditional stabilizers do not provide effective solution since they are known to induce heaving, termed in the literature as sulfate induced heaving (Hunter, 1988). Both swelling and softening of these soils rich in sulfates induce considerable damage to overlying pavement infrastructure. Typically, high sulfate soils treated with calcium based stabilizers form ettringite mineral. Ettringite undergoes heaving when hydrated (Hunter, 1988; Puppala et al. 2001). Since this sulfate-induced heave is caused …

Effects Of A Debonding Flaw Size And Location On The Flexural Performance Of Cfrp Retrofitted Steel Sections, Sharad C. Choudhary
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
In US there are several thousand steel bridges at present. Out of them many bridges are at various level of advance deteriorations due to many years of service life and environmental factors. These bridges cannot be fully replaced so retrofitting is the best choice .Earlier steel plates were used. With introduction of FRP in 1960.It is replacing the steel plates as they are lighter in weight and can be made stronger than steel. While installation of these FRP some kinds of Flaws are encountered. The variation of strength of carbon fiber reinforced laminate used for structural repair or strengthening containing …

Characterization Of The Ibc Technologies Superlig¨ 620 Solid Phase Extraction Resin With Applications For Automated Process Monitoring, John Clements
Characterization Of The Ibc Technologies Superlig¨ 620 Solid Phase Extraction Resin With Applications For Automated Process Monitoring, John Clements
All Theses
Characterization of the IBC Advanced Technologies SuperLig¨ 620 solid phase extraction resin was performed in order to develop an automated strontium-90 process monitor. The main focus was on strontium separation from barium, with the goal of developing an automated separation process for strontium-90 in Hanford high-level tank wastes. High-level waste tanks contain significant cesium-137 activities, of which barium daughters are of great concern as interferences to strontium quantification. A number of complexants were studied in a series of batch distribution coefficient experiments, as SuperLig¨ 620 was not previously known to elute strontium in typical mineral acids. The optimal separation was …
Evaluation Of Different Contra-Flow Strategies For Hurricane Evacuation In Charleston, South Carolina, Liz Stephen
Evaluation Of Different Contra-Flow Strategies For Hurricane Evacuation In Charleston, South Carolina, Liz Stephen
All Theses
The number of category four and five hurricanes has nearly doubled over the past decade. Charleston, the second most populous city in South Carolina, is located on a very low peninsula, making it susceptible to floods during hurricanes and storm surges. In the event of a hurricane, the population at-risk must be evacuated to safety as quickly as possible. The Interstate system is the primary mode to evacuate at-risk population out of Charleston. Effective traffic management strategies are needed to manage the significant increase in demand on highways during the evacuation and contra-flowing traffic has been applied as a strategy …

Permeability Of Municipal Solid Waste In Bioreactor Landfill With Degradation, Kiran Kumar Penmethsa
Permeability Of Municipal Solid Waste In Bioreactor Landfill With Degradation, Kiran Kumar Penmethsa
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Bioreactor landfills are operated and controlled to accelerate refuse decomposition, gas production and biological stabilization of the municipal solid waste (MSW). Leachate recirculation in bioreactor landfill creates a favorable environment for rapid microbial decomposition of the biodegradable components of solid waste. Therefore, clear understanding of the mechanism of moisture movement within the solid waste would be necessary for successful design and operation of the bioreactor landfill. Permeability is an important parameter during the design of leachate collection and recirculation system. In the current study an experimental program was designed to determine the variation of coefficient of permeability of MSW with …

Generalized Characteristics Of Resonant Polymer-Coated Microcantilevers In Viscous Liquid Media, Russell Cox, Michael J. Wenzel, Fabien Josse, Stephen M. Heinrich, Isabelle Dufour
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Expressions describing the resonant frequency and quality factor of a dynamically-driven, polymer-coated microcantilever in a viscous liquid medium have been obtained. These generalized formulas are used to describe the effects the operational medium and the coating has on the device sensitivity when used in liquid-phase chemical sensing applications. The derived expressions are shown to reduce to well-known formulas for the case of an uncoated cantilever in an invisicid [sic] medium and the case of a coated cantilever in air. The theoretical results are compared to existing chemical sensor data in aqueous and viscous solutions.

A Bayesian Method For Groundwater Quality Monitoring Network Analysis, Khalil A. Ammar
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Water resources management is best done when an efficient and reliable information system is available that provides data about the state of the water system being managed. Herein, a new methodology is developed and demonstrated that incorporates different aspects of monitoring, including vulnerability assessment, environmental health risk, the value of information, and redundancy reduction in an existing monitoring network. These various objectives reflect a desire for cost- efficiency, while taking into account uncertainty in predictions of groundwater contamination potential. This methodology is presented within an integrated approach to groundwater quality monitoring that includes several multi-objective aspects associated with decisions about …

On The Formation And Propagation Of Nonlinear Internal Boluses Across A Shelf Break, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy, Oliver B. Fringer
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
High-resolution two- and three-dimensional numerical simulations are performed of first-mode internal gravity waves interacting with a shelf break in a linearly stratified fluid. The interaction of nonlinear incident waves with the shelf break results in the formation of upslope-surging vortex cores of dense fluid (referred to here as internal boluses) that propagate onto the shelf. This paper primarily focuses on understanding the dynamics of the interaction process with particular emphasis on the formation, structure and propagation of internal boluses on shelf. A possible mechanism is identified for the excitation of vortex cores that are lifted over the shelf break, from …

Controller architecture, which combines neural network with internal model control, has been outlined and its effectiveness demonstrated on the container ship roll stabilizer. The control signal error is used with back-propagation algorithm to update the weights of the neural controller. In conclusion, the neural network based on internal model control systems are analyzed, and compared to classical PID control results. As can be seen from numerical results, the NN based on IMC is implemented …
An Experimental Study On Progressive Wave-Induced Stresses Duration In Seabed Soil, Shang-Chun Chang, Lien-Kwei Chien, Jaw-Guei Lin, Yung-Feng Chiu
An Experimental Study On Progressive Wave-Induced Stresses Duration In Seabed Soil, Shang-Chun Chang, Lien-Kwei Chien, Jaw-Guei Lin, Yung-Feng Chiu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The total stress behavior in seabed soil induced by progressive waves was investigated in time sequence through the experiments in a wave flume. The static stress measurements show that the natural deposit seabed retains an initial shear stress that reduces the resistance capacity of shear strength of the soil. The dynamic stress measurements show that, by comparing with seabed surface pressure, the vertical stress, horizontal stress, and pore water pressure are found to have different phase shifts. Such phase shifts strongly affect the duration behavior of the total stresses of the soil and different from the current theories that assume …

A Lean Modeling Protocol For Evaluating Green Project Delivery, Leidy E. Klotz, Michael Horman, Mark Bodenschatz
A Lean Modeling Protocol For Evaluating Green Project Delivery, Leidy E. Klotz, Michael Horman, Mark Bodenschatz
Publications
The first vital step to leaning an operation is to model or map the processes used to deliver value in that operation. This allows the requisite understanding of where waste and non value-adding activity exists, and provides the foundation for improvement. Current protocols for modeling operations present the basic tenets for lean mapping, but tend to be based in manufacturing language, and are not easily adapted to capital facilities projects. “Green” or “sustainable” capital projects delivered using current project delivery systems seem to be laden with hidden waste. These projects tend to be more challenging to deliver due increased levels …

Uncertainty And Error In Laser Triangulation Measurements For Pipe Profiling, Michael Kenneth Swanbom
Uncertainty And Error In Laser Triangulation Measurements For Pipe Profiling, Michael Kenneth Swanbom
Doctoral Dissertations
Underground pipeline infrastructure often receives insufficient attention and maintenance. Those responsible for ensuring the continuing functionality of this infrastructure primarily use subjective information in their decision making, and standards defining the level of damage acceptable before repair or replacement are difficult to implement. Laser pipe profiling is a relatively new technology that has emerged to take a step toward the objective assessment of buried assets. A laser profiler is a device that traverses a section of pipe, taking measurements of radius around the circumference of the inner pipe wall at multiple locations along the length of the pipe. The accuracy …
