Inverse Flood Risk Modelling Of The Upper Thames River Basin, Predrag Prodanovic, Slobodan P. Simonovic Nov 2006

Inverse Flood Risk Modelling Of The Upper Thames River Basin, Predrag Prodanovic, Slobodan P. Simonovic

Water Resources Research Report

This report aims to present an alternate approach to climate change impact mod- elling of water resources. The focus of the project is on the analysis of existing wa- ter resources management guidelines specifically targeting critical hydrologic events (extreme floods in this case). The critical hydrologic events are converted to their corresponding meteorologic conditions via use of an event based hydrologic model. The local climatic signal is generated by use of a non-parametric weather generator linked to outputs from a global climate model for three climate scenarios, and their corresponding frequency curves generated. Then, a critical hydrologic event of inter- …

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the development of a computational model that can be used to study the interactions between structures and detonating explosives contained within them. This model was developed as part of an effort to develop a rubble characterization model for use in AmmoSIM, an agent based urban tactical decision aid (UTDA) software for weapon-target pairing. The rubble pile created following the collapse of a building in a combat situation can significantly impact mission accomplishment, particularly in the area of movement and maneuver. The information provided by AmmoSIM will enable both platoon level and command center staff to make informed …

Testing And Evaluation Of Light Gauge Steel Frame / 9.5 Mm Csp Wood Panel Shear Walls, David Rokas Nov 2006

Testing And Evaluation Of Light Gauge Steel Frame / 9.5 Mm Csp Wood Panel Shear Walls, David Rokas

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

The use of light gauge steel framing elements sheathed with wood plywood or oriented strand board are becoming more common in the construction of structural shear walls for low-rise platform frame structural systems in Canada. Canadian standards and codes do not currently outline design methods for this type of wall system. Therefore, research at McGill University is underway to help develop design parameters for seismic and wind loading that can be used in conjunction with the 2005 National Building Code of Canada for this type of shear wall system. The research is based on the monotonic and reversed cyclic testing …

Rapid Bridge Replacement: Processes, Techniques, And Needs For Improvements, Yong Bai, William R. Burkett

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 and subsequent potential threats to the United States transportation systems have presented an urgent need to develop emergency response plans in order to quickly react to the possible consequences of an extreme event. Highway bridges, as critical components of the nation’s transportation network, have received increased attention. To respond to the potential threats on highway bridges, a research project was conducted to identify rapid bridge replacement processes, techniques, and needs for improvements. To achieve the research objectives, the research team studied three cases of previous bridge replacements following extreme events. By studying these …

Procedure To Quantify Biofilm Activity In Carriers Used In Wastewater Treatment Systems, James Bolton, Archana Tummala, Chirag Kapadia, Manoj Dandamudi, Joanne M. Belovich Nov 2006

Procedure To Quantify Biofilm Activity In Carriers Used In Wastewater Treatment Systems, James Bolton, Archana Tummala, Chirag Kapadia, Manoj Dandamudi, Joanne M. Belovich

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

A procedure is presented for evaluating and comparing the biological activity of biofilms attached to various biofilm carriers by measurement of the glucose consumption rate. This technique allows for the economical design and selection of small particulate biofilm carriers that will maximize substrate removal when used in industrial-scale fluidized bioreactors. Methods for ensuring reproducible results are described. To support the glucose consumption rate findings, biofilm dry weights were obtained at the conclusion of activity rate experiments, and scanning electron micrographs were taken to evaluate the presence of biofilm and to view surface characteristics. Fourteen different biofilm carriers were evaluated ranging …

Best Management Practices Used By Kytc For On-Site Erosion Control, David L. Allen, Sudhir Palle Nov 2006

Best Management Practices Used By Kytc For On-Site Erosion Control, David L. Allen, Sudhir Palle

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

New erosion control procedures (ECP) have recently been implemented by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). Previously, consultants and designers developed the ECP as a part of the design plans. In many cases these did not work in the field. The new procedures allow construction personnel to develop and implement their own ECPs on site.

This study conducted a survey of construction personnel in the KYTC to determine their level of familiarity with the new ECPs and to determine any issues that may have developed with the new procedures. The results of the survey concluded that most KYTC construction personnel were …

Study Of Viscoelastic Effect On The Frequency Shift Of Microcantilever Chemical Sensors (Journal Article), Uttara Sampath, Stephen M. Heinrich, Fabien Josse, Frederic Lochon, Isabelle Dufour, Dominique Rebiere Nov 2006

Study Of Viscoelastic Effect On The Frequency Shift Of Microcantilever Chemical Sensors (Journal Article), Uttara Sampath, Stephen M. Heinrich, Fabien Josse, Frederic Lochon, Isabelle Dufour, Dominique Rebiere

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Microcantilevers coated with a chemically sensitive layer are increasingly being used in chemical detection systems. The sensitive coating, often a polymer, absorbs specific molecules, which can be detected by monitoring the shift in the mechanical resonant frequency. Usually. the frequency shift resulting from molecular absorption is interpreted as a mass loading effect. However, mass loading is not the only effect that has an impact on the frequency shift; the viscoelastic properties of the sensitive coating also are affected by the sorption process. Sorption-induced modulus changes are typically difficult to characterize. However, it is known that the sorption of analyte molecules …

Distortional Buckling Of Cold-Formed Steel Members, Maximiliano Malite, Roberto Martins Goncalves, Jorge Munaiar Neto, Gustavo M. B. Chodraui

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Cold-formed steel members are widely employed in steel construction because their structural components are lighter and more economical than traditional hot-rolled ones. Nowadays, the easy availability and accessible cost of high-strength low-alloy steels, weathering steels and zinc-coated steels have led to members with high width/thickness ratios, rendering them even more susceptible to local buckling, which is characterized by a plate buckling and which can also lead to another buckling mode called distortional buckling, affecting mainly members with edge stiffeners (lipped channels and Z-sections, hat, rack, etc.). Hence, current versions of technical codes for cold-formed steel design have warned about the …

Distortional Buckling Tests On Cold-Formed Steel Beams, Cheng Yu, Benjamin W. Schafer Oct 2006

Distortional Buckling Tests On Cold-Formed Steel Beams, Cheng Yu, Benjamin W. Schafer

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Laterally braced cold-formed steel beams generally fail due to local or distortional buckling. When the compression flange is not restrained by attachment to sheathing or paneling, such as in negative bending of continuous members (joist, purlins, etc.), members are prone to distortional failures. However, distortional buckling remains a largely unaddressed problem in the main body of the North American Specification (NAS 2001). Only a limited amount of experimental data on unrestricted distortional buckling in bending is available, therefore a new series of distortional buckling tests was completed. The test details are selected specifically to insure that distortional buckling is free …

Local-Plate And Distortional Post-Buckling Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Lipped Channel Columns With Intermediate Stiffeners, Nuno Silvestre, Dinar Camotim Oct 2006

Local-Plate And Distortional Post-Buckling Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Lipped Channel Columns With Intermediate Stiffeners, Nuno Silvestre, Dinar Camotim

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

This paper reports the results of an investigation concerning the local-plate and distortional post-buckling behavior of cold-formed steel lipped channel columns with web and flange intermediate stiffeners. They have all been obtained through geometrically non-linear analyses based on a recently developed and implemented Generalized Beam Theory (GBT) formulation that incorporates (i) conventional (shear undeformable), (ii) shear (non-linear warping) and (iii) transverse extension deformation modes. These results, some of which are compared with values yielded by shell finite element analyses performed in the code ABAQUS (mostly for validation purposes), provide the evolution, along a given local-plate or distortional post-buckling equilibrium path, …

Stress Gradient Effect On The Buckling Of Thin Plates, Cheng Yu, Benjamin W. Schafer Oct 2006

Stress Gradient Effect On The Buckling Of Thin Plates, Cheng Yu, Benjamin W. Schafer

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

This paper presents an analytical method to calculate the buckling stress of a rectangular thin plate under nonuniform applied axial stresses. Two cases are considered, buckling of a plate simply supported on all four sides and buckling of a plate simply supported on three sides with one unloaded edge free and the opposite unloaded edge rotationally restrained. These two cases illustrate the influence of stress (moment) gradient on stiffened and unstiffened elements, respectively. The axial stress gradient is equilibrated by shear forces along the supported edges. A Rayleigh-Ritz solution with an assumed deflection function as a combination of a polynomial …
