Compressive Behavior Of Concrete With Vitrified Soil Aggregate, Shane M. Palmquist, Daniel C. Jansen, Christopher W. Swan

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The compressive behavior of portland cement concrete with vitrified soil coarse aggregate is the focus of this paper. A total of 10 batches of concrete were examined at four different coarse aggregate volume fractions with three different combinations of vitrified and natural coarse aggregates. For comparison purposes, the ratios of cement, water, and fine aggregates were held constant. The stress-strain curves, modulus of elasticity, compressive strength, and Poisson's ratio are examined as a function of coarse aggregate content. Results show a decrease in compressive strength as the volume fraction of vitrified soil aggregate increased. Moduli of elasticity for concrete with …

Simplified Analysis Of Asymmetric Structures With Supplemental Damping, Rakesh K. Goel Sep 2001

Simplified Analysis Of Asymmetric Structures With Supplemental Damping, Rakesh K. Goel

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This study investigated the effects of neglecting off‐diagonal terms of the transformed damping matrix on the seismic response of non‐proportionally damped asymmetric‐plan systems with the specific aim of identifying the range of system parameters for which this simplification can be used without introducing significant errors in the response. For this purpose, a procedure is presented in which modal damping ratios computed by neglecting off‐diagonal terms of the transformed damping matrix are used in the traditional modal analysis. The effects of the simplification are evaluated first by comparing the aforementioned modal damping ratios with the apparent damping ratios obtained from the …

Watershed Management Technique To Control Sediment Yield In Agriculturally Dominated Areas, John W. Nicklow, Misgana K. Muleta Sep 2001

Watershed Management Technique To Control Sediment Yield In Agriculturally Dominated Areas, John W. Nicklow, Misgana K. Muleta

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Non-point source pollution is recognized internationally as a critical environmental problem. In Illinois, soil erosion from agricultural lands is the major source of such pollution. The erosion process, which has been accelerated by human activity, tends to reduce crop productivity and leads to subsequent problems from deposition on farmlands and in water bodies. Comprehensive watershed management, however, can be used to protect these natural resources. In this study, a discrete time optimal control methodology and computational model are developed for determining land use and management alternatives that minimize sediment yield from agriculturally-dominated watersheds. The solution methodology is based on an …

Ascent And Decompression Of Viscous Vesicular Magma In A Volcanic Conduit, Helene Massol, Claude Jaupart, Darrell Pepper Aug 2001

Ascent And Decompression Of Viscous Vesicular Magma In A Volcanic Conduit, Helene Massol, Claude Jaupart, Darrell Pepper

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

During eruption, lava domes and flows may become unstable and generate dangerous explosions. Fossil lava-filled eruption conduits and ancient lava flows are often characterized by complex internal variations of gas content. These observations indicate a need for accurate predictions of the distribution of gas content and bubble pressure in an eruption conduit. Bubbly magma behaves as a compressible viscous liquid involving three different pressures: those of the gas and magma phases, and that of the exterior. To solve for these three different pressures, one must account for expansion in all directions and hence for both horizontal and vertical velocity components. …

Development Of Concrete Qc/Qa Specifications For Highway Construction In Kentucky, Kamyar C. Mahboub, Donn E. Hancher Aug 2001

Development Of Concrete Qc/Qa Specifications For Highway Construction In Kentucky, Kamyar C. Mahboub, Donn E. Hancher

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

There is a growing trend toward quality-based specifications in highway construction. A large number of quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA) specifications shift the responsibility of day-to-day testing from the state DOH to the contractor. This requirement for contractor-performed quality control testing has been partly due to the fact that state agencies are operating with a smaller pool of employees compared to previous years. Another driving force has been the application of performance-based specifications and realization that the contractor and the producer need some degree of flexibility in order to be more efficient and innovative. This report presents the background information behind …

Development And Proposed Implementation Of A Field Permeability Test For Asphalt Concrete, David L. Allen, David B. Schultz Jr., L. John Fleckenstein Jul 2001

Development And Proposed Implementation Of A Field Permeability Test For Asphalt Concrete, David L. Allen, David B. Schultz Jr., L. John Fleckenstein

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Pavement drainage contributes greatly to long-term pavement performance. Pavements undergo surface, as well as subsurface, drainage during prolonged rain events. It is this subsurface drainage that is of concern in this study. In the advanced asphalt pavements of today, where a drainage layer may be incorporated to facilitate the movement of water out of the above overlying pavement layers, water can be a problem in areas with variable permeability. High permeability may also cause other problems related to drainage such as frost heave, stripping, asphalt emulsification, and water coming out of the pavement surface from deeper layers in the pavement …
