Development Of Socketed Foundations For S3x5.7 Posts, Scott K. Rosenbaugh, Tyler L. Schmidt, Ronald K. Faller, John D. Reid

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

The objective of this study was to develop a socketed foundation for use with the S3x5.7 (S76x8.5) weak post. The design focused on cylindrical, reinforced concrete foundations with a steel tube placed in the center for use as the socket. The foundation was to prevent both damage and displacements exceeding 1 in. (25 mm), as measured at groundline, during an impact event. To evaluate various foundation designs, ten dynamic bogie tests were conducted over three separate rounds of testing. Round 1 was conducted in a weak, sandy soil; Round 2 was conducted in a strong, stiff soil; and Round 3 …

Safety And Operational Analysis Of Lane Widths In Mid-Block Segments And Intersection Approaches In The Urban Environment In Nebraska, Anuj Sharma, Wei Li, Mo Zhao, Laurence Rilett Apr 2015

Safety And Operational Analysis Of Lane Widths In Mid-Block Segments And Intersection Approaches In The Urban Environment In Nebraska, Anuj Sharma, Wei Li, Mo Zhao, Laurence Rilett

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

This research examined the safety and operational effects of roadway lane width on mid-block segments between signalized intersections as well as on signalized intersection approaches in the urban environments of Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska. In the safety analysis, the Poisson and negative binomial regressions with fixed or random parameters were estimated to evaluate the effects of lane width on annual crash frequencies at mid-block segments and intersection approaches. In the operational analysis, linear regressions were used to examine lane width effects on the vehicles’ speed at mid-block segments. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was applied to explore the effects of lane width …

Characterization Of Bridge Deck Runoff, Shannon L. Bartelt-Hunt, Elizabeth G. Jones, Renys Barrios Mar 2015

Characterization Of Bridge Deck Runoff, Shannon L. Bartelt-Hunt, Elizabeth G. Jones, Renys Barrios

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

In this study, time-weighted composite samples of bridge runoff and hourly traffic data were collected at four sampling locations in Nebraska. Total suspended solids (TSS) and hexane extractable material (HEM) had the highest concentrations during the first rainfall event of the year, while other constituent concentrations peaked during the third rainfall event of the year. In general, constituent concentrations were highest in the spring, and then decreased throughout the summer and fall. Average concentrations of TDS, TSS, chloride, iron, and lead measured in this study were higher than those found in the previous NDOR study at the same sampling locations. …

Evaluating The Constructability Of Nudeck Precast Concrete Deck Panels For Kearney Bypass Project, George Morcous, Afshin Hatami, Micheal Assad Feb 2015

Evaluating The Constructability Of Nudeck Precast Concrete Deck Panels For Kearney Bypass Project, George Morcous, Afshin Hatami, Micheal Assad

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

The first generation of precast concrete deck system, NUDECK, was implemented on the Skyline Bridge, Omaha, NE in 2004. The second generation of NUDECK system was developed to further simplify the system and improve its constructability and durability. The new generation consists of full-width full-depth precast concrete deck panels that are 12 ft long to minimize the number of deck panels and transverse joints, and consequently accelerate bridge construction. It also uses covered individual pockets and bundled shear connectors at 4 ft spacing to simplify panel and girder production and eliminate the need for deck overlay. Precast deck panels are …

Development Of A Socketed Foundation For The Midwest Weak Post V1, Ronald K. Faller, Dean L. Sicking, Scott Rosenbaugh, John D. Reid, Tyler L. Schmidt

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

A socketed foundation was designed and evaluated for use with the Midwest Weak Post (MWP), Version 1. Dynamic component testing was conducted on five different design configurations with varying embedment depths, steel reinforcement, and soil conditions. The low strength of the MWPs limited the force transferred into the foundations and prevented damage in the form of concrete cracking or fracture. Additionally, the lateral movements of the socketed foundations were all within the 1-in. (25-mm) limit established to ensure reuse of the foundations without resetting. The selected design consisted of a 12-in. (305-mm) diameter concrete shaft reinforced with four vertical bars …

Overwintering Biology And Tests Of Trap And Relocate As A Conservation Measure For Burying Beetles, W. Wyatt Hoback, Adrienne Conley Jan 2014

Overwintering Biology And Tests Of Trap And Relocate As A Conservation Measure For Burying Beetles, W. Wyatt Hoback, Adrienne Conley

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

Burying beetles are carrion beetles and utilize dead animal carcasses for feeding and reproductive efforts. They assist with decomposition, prevent the spread of disease, and reduce the number of pest species. The largest species of carrion beetle, the American burying beetle, is a federally endangered insect and its distribution has been reduced by 90%. The conservation of this species is important in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Overwintering biology and trap and relocation were studied to determine how this beetle survives freezing temperatures and to find whether trap and relocation could be a suitable conservation management measure.

Trap and relocation is …

Investigation Of Rural/Suburban High-Speed Multilane Roundabouts, Aemal Khattak, Eric Thompson, Shanshan Zhao Jan 2014

Investigation Of Rural/Suburban High-Speed Multilane Roundabouts, Aemal Khattak, Eric Thompson, Shanshan Zhao

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

This research was focused on two issues related to multilane roundabouts on high-speed highways (speed limit 45 mph or greater) in rural and suburban areas. The first was the tradeoff between converting a traditional stop-controlled or signalized intersection to a multilane roundabout while the second was the safety of newly constructed high-speed multilane roundabouts in rural and suburban areas. The research team reviewed information from diverse published documents and conducted a survey of state and local transportation agencies. Crash data on multilane rural roundabouts were not available for this research. Therefore, the research team relied on crash and other data …

Cable Median Barrier Failure Analysis And Remediation Phase Ii, Cody S. Stolle, Dean L. Sicking, Ronald K. Faller, John D. Reid

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

Cable median barrier crashes from a total of 12 states were analyzed. Crash data included scene diagrams, photographs, and field measurements, crash narratives, although the availability of data in each crash varied.

Major contributors to penetration crash propensity were identified: diving underride, in which the front end of the vehicle dropped below the bottom cable; prying, in which the vehicle profile caused cable separation or lifting; override; bouncing override, in which the vehicle rebounded after contact with the back slope and bounced over the top of the barrier; system failure, in which one component failure or design failure prevented the …
