A Digital Computer Simulation Of A Rural Two-Lane Highway, D. Jay Frankenfield Jan 1971

A Digital Computer Simulation Of A Rural Two-Lane Highway, D. Jay Frankenfield

Masters Theses

"The traffic flow model developed in this study is a digital computer simulation utilizing the technique of periodic scanning to move the vehicles through a series of unit blocks. The model simulates traffic flow on a rural two-lane highway by assuming a straight and level road and incorporating sight distance restrictions and no-passing zones to simulate the effect of limited sight distance. By utilizing various "passing rules" to initiate the passing maneuver, three general topics were investigated. This study investigated the use of 1000 ADT as a criterion for yellow line striping no-passing by using the computer simulation to determine …

Compressibility Effects On Transient Gas Pipe Flow, Gerald Francis Mouser Jan 1971

Compressibility Effects On Transient Gas Pipe Flow, Gerald Francis Mouser

Masters Theses

"Abstract (1) Methods of iterative solution for the partial-differential equations that govern the transient flow of gases in pipelines are obtained by using the method of characteristics and linear finite-difference techniques. Solutions are developed for 1) a constant gas compressibility factor throughout transient conditions, and 2) a variable gas compressibility factor at constant temperature dependent upon pressures encountered during transient flow. Theoretical studies are made to compare results using both approaches for pipelines operating at various constant flowing temperatures. Results show greater differences between the two methods at lower values of flowing temperature due to the more rapidly changing compressibility …

The Integrated Planning Method Of Project Planning, Development And Implementation, Joseph Frank Lynch Jan 1971

The Integrated Planning Method Of Project Planning, Development And Implementation, Joseph Frank Lynch

Masters Theses

"Present comprehensive planning endeavors lack a consistent methodology which will produce realistic, useable results. The validity of this statement should be obvious after one has read Miller's "Evaluation of City and Region Planning Techniques." This paper contains a methodology, "The Integrated Planning Method," which will go a long way toward correcting this gross inadequacy that planners presently encounter in directing planning efforts. Two government developed planning and analysis procedures that, up until this time have been applied almost exclusively to hardware systems, have been combined into one integrated planning methodology that will provide not only meaningful and rigorous definition and …

Some Factors Affecting The Results In Cyclic Triaxial Tests, Suresh Kumar Chaudhary Jan 1971

Some Factors Affecting The Results In Cyclic Triaxial Tests, Suresh Kumar Chaudhary

Masters Theses

"A major cause of damage to structures and earth embankments during earthquakes or any other such dynamic vibrating loading conditions has been the liquefaction of saturated sands. There have been several investigations to establish a convenient and relatively simple laboratory test procedure and to study the nature of field conditions leading to sand liquefaction. This investigation evaluates the effects of sample size, testing frequency, and the method of sample preparation on the number of cycles to cause initial liquefaction in pulsating triaxial tests using standardized equipment and test procedures. It has been found that sample size does affect test results …

Contractor Quality Control: A Method Of Construction Inspection, John Scott Treadwell Jan 1971

Contractor Quality Control: A Method Of Construction Inspection, John Scott Treadwell

Masters Theses

"It has become apparent in recent years that the United States Government's construction contract supervision and administration procedures are causing an increase in contractor claims and disputes and that the system itself is becoming prohibitively expensive. To deal with some of these problems, the Department of Defense is attempting to implement a new approach to construction inspection--Contractor Quality control. Under the Contractor Quality Control System the majority of the standard contract inspection and testing responsibilities are placed on the contractor, and the Government relinquishes its traditional step-by-step inspection and testing procedures and withdraws to a position of contract surveillance. The …

Evaluation Of City And Region Planning Techniques, Charles Clay Miller Jan 1970

Evaluation Of City And Region Planning Techniques, Charles Clay Miller

Masters Theses

"The transportation and community planning effort in the United States has resulted in the expenditure of a great deal of time and money. However, the result of this effort has largely been unusable because of a lack of an effective formalized planning method. this thesis presents summarizations of the planning methods employed in ten plans which are typical of the U.S. Planning Effort. Each of these methods are critiqued in the light of a proposed planning method. The Federal Government has recently required the adoption of a Planning, Programming and Budgeting System (PPBS) in an effort to formalize a scientific …

Use Of Waste Glass As Asphaltic Concrete Aggregate, Charles Wayne Foster Jan 1970

Use Of Waste Glass As Asphaltic Concrete Aggregate, Charles Wayne Foster

Masters Theses

"The problem of solid waste disposal increases each year, with the annual growth in quantity of solid waste making the present means of disposal even more inadequate. Recycling of solid waste materials is an increasingly popular approach to the disposal problem. The glass component of solid waste is a very promising candidate for recycling, and this investigation studies the possibility of using waste glass as an aggregate for bituminous concrete mixtures. Objectives of this research were to determine whether a glass-asphalt mixture could be designed to meet the Marshall design criteria specified by The Asphalt Institute, to study the amount …

Multi-Stage Shear Testing Of A Cohesionless Soil, Robert Clyde Gullic Jan 1970

Multi-Stage Shear Testing Of A Cohesionless Soil, Robert Clyde Gullic

Masters Theses

"The multi-stage test is a procedure by which a soil's shear strength parameters can be evaluated by the use of a single sample of the material. The object of the investigation is to evaluate to what extent multi-stage testing can be used on a cohesionless material. Three types of tests, using conventional and multi-stage procedures are evaluated. They are: direct shear/consolidated drained, triaxial compression/consolidated drained and triaxial compression/consolidated undrained shear tests. It was found that multi-stage testing can easily be performed and the shear strength parameter thetaf obtained from these tests are in good agreement with those obtained from …

Evaluation Of The Carbon Adsorption Method With Parallel Solvent Extraction Studies, Stanley Kent Wagher Jan 1970

Evaluation Of The Carbon Adsorption Method With Parallel Solvent Extraction Studies, Stanley Kent Wagher

Masters Theses

"In spite of the importance of the carbon adsorption method (CAM) in determining drinking water quality and its wide use in research and plant control studies, little work has been undertaken to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate the method, especially under field conditions. This investigation was, therefore, undertaken in order to develop a test system consisting of equipment and procedures which would make possible the field evaluation of the carbon adsorption method by parallel solvent extraction studies, and to employ this system in preliminary field investigations to establish guidelines for the experimental conditions required for its effective application. The test system …

Dynamic Analysis Of Multistory Frames Considering Both Distributed And Lumped Mass, Mark E. Botkin Jan 1970

Dynamic Analysis Of Multistory Frames Considering Both Distributed And Lumped Mass, Mark E. Botkin

Masters Theses

"Two types of dynamic analysis of multistory structures are presented in this thesis . First presented is the dynamic stiffness matrix method in which the masses are distributed along the constituent members. This method is composed of statics, stiffness and loading matrices. The statics matrices are established from the structural configurations, the stiffness coefficients are formulated from the elastic properties of the members, and the loading matrices are functions of the time dependent forces or time dependent foundation movements. The applied forces may be uniform, concentrated, triangular or joint forces. Computer programs are given to carry out the laborious calculations …

A Proposed Concept For The Rapid Field Design Of Protective Structures, John Ross Childress Jan 1970

A Proposed Concept For The Rapid Field Design Of Protective Structures, John Ross Childress

Masters Theses

"This investigation proposes a simplified concept for the rapid field design of protective structures, subject to attack by conventional artillery rounds, mortar rounds and small rockets. Parameters which should be considered during a rigorous design process are discussed. The number and complexity of these parameters make the rigorous design procedure too unwieldy to be efficiently used, in a limited time period, when materials are not available to comply with Standard Designs. Since the duration of an explosion pulse is very short and uncompacted soil is capable of absorbing explosive energy, this study investigates the theory that adequate protection can be …

Penetration In A Graded Filter, William Chuan Shen Jan 1970

Penetration In A Graded Filter, William Chuan Shen

Masters Theses

"An experimental laboratory study conducted to examine clogging within and penetration of fines into a single layer graded filter. Hydraulic gradient, filter gradation and flow direction were varied. Forty one tests gave over six hundred individual penetration depths. The magnitude of penetration in filters with considerable variation in gradation patterns correlated with an average hydraulic radius based on the volume of voids and an approximated total surface area. It has been shown than an increased thickness of poorly graded filter will stop penetration such as that caused by seepage erosion. A relationship between hydraulic radius, penetration depth and probability of …

Behavior Of A Remolded Silty-Clay Subjected To Sequential Loading, Lawrence Tsi-Ching Chung

Masters Theses

"The investigation was undertaken to determine shear strength and pore pressure parameters of a soil when subjected to sequential loading. This method is intended to similate the in-situ condition of stress application under certain field conditions. The testing procedure, a sequential triaxial shear test, is described. This test consists of successive stages of partial consolidation followed by undrained shear. Triaxial consolidation and shear strength characteristics of a sedimented remolded silty-clay are compared with the results from conventional tests on isotropically consolidated samples. The undrained strength was found to be a function of moisture content, irrespective of the method of test …

Shear Strength Characteristics Of Crushed Glass, Fred Ray Browning Jan 1970

Shear Strength Characteristics Of Crushed Glass, Fred Ray Browning

Masters Theses

"Drained and undrained triaxial compression tests were performed on two gradations of crushed glass in order to determine the compressibility and shear strength characteristics. Consolidation pressures varied from 10 to 100 psi. Volume changes during consolidation were discussed because of the dependency of shear strength behavior on the density condition at the end of consolidation. Stress-strain-volume change characteristics were observed in order to discuss the load-deformation and dilatancy relationships and the effects of varying density, gradation and consolidation pressure. Stress-strain properties were also determined for the undrained tests. The undrained tests were constant volume tests, thus having no dilatancy effects. …

A Socio-Economic Traffic Demand Prediction Model Based On A Lumped System Approach, John Edward Thompson Jan 1970

A Socio-Economic Traffic Demand Prediction Model Based On A Lumped System Approach, John Edward Thompson

Masters Theses

"The objective of this investigation was to devise a method for predicting transportation system demand based on socio-economic variables of certain physical areas. This pilot study was performed utilizing traffic flow, but minor mathematical alterations could change the transportation system to urban mass transit usage demand. An area of uniform socio-economic characteristics can be delineated and the socio-economic characteristics isolated. Each area will place a distinct demand on some existing transportation facility based on those characteristics. The physical demand can be approximated by a theoretical probability distribution. Once this internal flow generation has been approximated by the frequency distribution, it …
