Evaluation Of Texas Cone Penetrometer Test To Predict Undrained Shear Strength Of Clays, Hariharan Vasudevan Aug 2005

Evaluation Of Texas Cone Penetrometer Test To Predict Undrained Shear Strength Of Clays, Hariharan Vasudevan

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

The cone penetration test used in Texas is termed as Texas cone penetrometer (TCP), which works on dynamic principles similar to those of SPT, i.e. a hammer is used to drive the cone device for a preset depth of penetration of 12 inches. Results are typically reported in the form of N12 values. Correlations between N12 and soil strength properties are currently used by the TxDOT to determine in situ strength properties of soils prior to any infrastructure design. A research study was initiated to evaluate the existing shear strength predicting correlations used by TxDOT and its applicability for soils …

Water Damage Evaluation Of Concrete Infrastructure, Roshan Shakya

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

This study presents an experimental program to evaluate the effect of a special waterproofing material, International Chem-Crete Pavix (CCP), on the durability of concrete. The experimental program identified the concrete mix design commonly used for pavement and other infrastructure as set by Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT). The tests conducted include the water absorption and air void (ASTM C 642), freeze-thaw (ASTM C 666), chloride penetration (ASTM C 1202), and petrographic (ASTM C 457) test. The tests were performed on both cored and laboratory treated and untreated specimens. The absorption test was performed on the concrete specimens with water cement …

Impacts Of Signal Synchronization On Vehicular Emissions - An On-Board Measurement Case Study, Rupangi Munshi Aug 2005

Impacts Of Signal Synchronization On Vehicular Emissions - An On-Board Measurement Case Study, Rupangi Munshi

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Nearly 56% of total nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions are produced by mobile sources. Transportation and air quality managers at the state and regional level have the responsibility of developing and evaluating Transportation Control Measures (TCMs) and Transportation Improvement Plans (TIPs) to improve air quality of the region. Signal synchronization is considered to be an effective TCM to reduce corridor congestion and maintain air quality in the region. This research was carried to determine the impacts of signal synchronization on real-world, on-road emissions. A portable instrument, OBS-1300 manufactured by Horiba Instruments Inc., was used to measure on-road tailpipe emissions of NOx …

Development Of Finite Element Method-Based Model Equations For Hollow Tapered Poles, Jiwon Jung Aug 2005

Development Of Finite Element Method-Based Model Equations For Hollow Tapered Poles, Jiwon Jung

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

This study presents the development of three-parameter load-deflection models for steel and FRP poles commonly used to support closed circuit television cameras. An experimental investigation is carried out to obtain static load-deflection characteristics of tapered octagonal steel cross section and circular FRP cross section poles. Numerical results generated from three-dimensional isoparametric finite element model (FEM) considering coupled nonlinear algorithms for material, geometric, contact, and pre-tensioning effects are compared with those obtained experimentally. Eight-node elsto-plastic solid element is employed to model the pole, end-plate, bolts, concrete base, and laboratory reaction floor. The laboratory reaction floor is modeled with a thick plate …

Performance Evaluation Of Bamboo Reinforced Concrete Beams, Leena Khare Aug 2005

Performance Evaluation Of Bamboo Reinforced Concrete Beams, Leena Khare

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

This study presents the evaluation of the feasibility of the use of bamboo as a potential reinforcement in concrete structural members. To achieve this objective a series of tensile tests on three types of bamboo Solid; Moso; and Tonkin; were conducted to obtain their constitutive relation. Also, four-point bending tests on concrete beams reinforced with bamboo were performed to identify their behavior compared to steel reinforced concrete members. Tensile tests specimens were prepared by cutting the bamboo typically in 1/2 in (13 mm) wide strips of 9 to 12 in (228 mm to 305 mm) in length. In order to …

Performance And Check-Out Verification Testing Of A New True Triaxial Apparatus Using Partially Saturated Silty Sand, Jae Hyun Park

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

A stress-controlled, flexible boundary, true triaxial (cubical) testing apparatus has been developed to test 3-inch cubical specimen of partially saturated soil under different moisture contents and for a wide range of multiaxial stress paths. A series of HC, CTC, TC, TE, and SS tests were conducted in order to perform a thorough performance and check-out verification testing of the newly developed device by investigating the multiaxial stress-strain response of partially saturated silty sand specimens artificially prepared in the laboratory. The development of the apparatus, specimen preparation process, test procedure, and the corresponding validation of its suitability for testing partially saturated …

Nonlinear Finite Element Model Analysis Of Human Accommodation Lens, Tri Le Aug 2005

Nonlinear Finite Element Model Analysis Of Human Accommodation Lens, Tri Le

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

The crystalline human lens is modeled by using the finite element software, ABAQUS/CAE Version 6.5-1 as an axisymmetric shell to study the optical power and displacement of anterior and posterior poles induced due to zonule traction. Several different element types were tested to obtain the optimum mesh. These elements were three and six-noded triangular hybrid and four-noded quadrilateral hybrid for modeling of the cortex and nucleus. Constant strain triangular and regular quadrilateral elements were examined for modeling the capsule. One dimensional two degree of freedom spring elements were used to model the anterior, posterior, and equatorial zonules. Five different lens …

Seasonal And Spatial Variation Of Subgrade Response, Mustaque Hossain, Stefan Romanoschi, Andrew J. Gisi Jan 2000

Seasonal And Spatial Variation Of Subgrade Response, Mustaque Hossain, Stefan Romanoschi, Andrew J. Gisi

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Temperature, subgrade moisture content, and Falling Weight Defleetometer (FWD)-deflection data were collected monthly on four asphalt pavement test sections in Kansas for a year. The subgrade moduli were baekealeulated using the elastic layer theory. It was found that for almost all sites, the monthly variation in subgrade moisture content was not very significant over the seasons. The patterns of subgrade response, in terms of subgrade moduli versus time, simulated sine-shaped forms signifying a possible temperature effect. Higher variabilities across the site were associated with the extreme temperature conditions, usually very low or high average pavement temperatures. In all cases, the …

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

The Pavement Research Facility in Port Allen, Louisiana houses the first full-scale accelerated pavement testing experiment in the state. The purpose of the first experiment was to evaluate the historically prevalent flexible crushed stone and in-place soil cement stabilized base construction in comparison to several alternative base construction materials and construction processes for pavements designed for a semi-tropical climate. Loading is provided by an Accelerated Loading Facility (ALF) machine, the second of its type in the United States. More than six million equivalent axle loads (ESALs) were applied to the nine test lanes. Performance of the pavement structures and materials …
