Evaluation Of Recycled Plastic Pins As Shear Keys In Mse Wall Base, Prabesh Bhandari May 2021

Evaluation Of Recycled Plastic Pins As Shear Keys In Mse Wall Base, Prabesh Bhandari

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls have been widely used as retaining structures due to their flexible nature, a better tolerance against differential settlement, and many other factors. However, external stability problems of MSE walls have been an issue in North Texas over decades. Lateral displacement of the wall occurs, giving rise to sliding failure, when there is insufficient shear strength at the wall base to produce adequate frictional resistance. Such failures can cause significant maintenance, repair, and cost implications for the state department of transportation. Furthermore, MSE walls also undergo global failure due to weak soil conditions along with high …

Improving Operational Hydrologic Forecasting Via Conditional Bias-Penalized Multi-Sensor Precipitation Estimation And Multi-Model Streamflow Prediction, Ali Jozaghi May 2021

Improving Operational Hydrologic Forecasting Via Conditional Bias-Penalized Multi-Sensor Precipitation Estimation And Multi-Model Streamflow Prediction, Ali Jozaghi

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Many multivariate analysis techniques involve minimizing mean square error (MSE) or error variance under unbiasedness. In the presence of observation error, variance minimization tends to introduce negative and positive biases, or conditional bias (CB), over the upper and lower tails of the predictands, respectively. This work describes and evaluates three multivariate merging techniques, 1) adaptive conditional bias-penalized cokriging (CBPCK), 2) conditional bias-penalized Multiple Linear Regression (CBP-MLR), and 3) conditional bias-penalized Bayesian Model Averaging (CBP-BMA) which implements CBP-MLR in place of MLR. CBPCK and CBP-MLR minimize a linearly weighted sum of errors squared and the sum of the Type-II error squared, …

Laboratory Study Of Hydrodynamics Of Submerged Bridges, Max Thomson Dean Dec 2020

Laboratory Study Of Hydrodynamics Of Submerged Bridges, Max Thomson Dean

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Bridges are designed to withstand flood and debris loads; however, it is reported that 53% of bridge failures in the U.S. are caused by hydraulic events, including floods, scour, debris, and drifts. A series of scale flume experiments were conducted to determine flood force effects on bridge superstructures. 1:50 scale models of the Texas Department of Transportation’s typical reinforced concrete bridge superstructures were tested. The bridge superstructures included beams (TX28 and TX54 girders, slab beams, and box beams) and an accompanying bridge deck and railing. The drag and lift forces and overturning moments were measured by load sensors for various …

Developing Strength Reduction Factor For Flexural Design Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Exposed To Fire, Sahar Aradmehr Dec 2020

Developing Strength Reduction Factor For Flexural Design Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Exposed To Fire, Sahar Aradmehr

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Fire is a common hazard that may happen during the lifetime of concrete structures. Thus, it is one of the loads considered in building and tunnel design standards and codes. Dependency of the safety and structural integrity of a building to load-bearing elements such as beams requires the safe design of these elements. Flexural design of reinforced concrete (RC) beams under fire is critical. Typical load and resistance factor design (LRFD) of flexural member at ambient temperature deals with comparing the factored applied load with its capacity. Strength reduction factors are applied to the calculated nominal moment capacity to take …

Laboratory Tests And Numerical Model Of Geothermally Heated Bridge Deck With Attached Hydronic Loop, Teng Li Dec 2020

Laboratory Tests And Numerical Model Of Geothermally Heated Bridge Deck With Attached Hydronic Loop, Teng Li

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

An accumulation of ice and snow on pavement slabs and bridge decks always adversely impacts driving conditions and results in motorist accidents. The use of the more popular deicing methods, including plowing, salting, and sanding, is limited by their relatively high cost for materials, fuel, maintenance, and labor. Geothermal energy, which is considered a renewable, sustainable, clean (i.e., zero carbon emission), and directly used energy source, has been successfully applied to bridges and pavements for deicing. However, existing geothermal bridge and pavement deicing designs are primarily employed for new bridges where hydronic loops, which are considered internal heating, are embedded …

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Accurate prediction of pavement deterioration is vital for an efficient and cost-effective allocation of available budgets for keeping an agency’s road networks operating at a desirable level. Currently, most cities in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area are using the software PAVERTM and the associated performance models to predict future conditions as they do not have available reliable prediction models. However, the problem with this type of modeling is that the models are not calibrated to local conditions. The Pavement Deterioration Prediction models that have been developed in this research will help any pavement management agencies within DFW Metroplex area to …

Use Of Time-Domain Reflectometry To Characterize Thermal And Hydraulic Properties Of Unsaturated Sands, Xuelin Wang Dec 2020

Use Of Time-Domain Reflectometry To Characterize Thermal And Hydraulic Properties Of Unsaturated Sands, Xuelin Wang

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Unsaturated soil is an essential consideration for many geotechnical engineering fields, for example, soil bearing capacity, soil lateral earth pressure, slope stability analysis, and seepage-related problems. Thermal-hydro-mechanical (THM) processes govern the behavior of unsaturated soils. Therefore, it is critical to simultaneously measure soil moisture, density, and thermal properties to better study THM processes. A thermo-time-domain reflectometry (thermo-TDR) sensor, a dual-probe for both soil moisture and thermal properties, is improved (based on its previous design) and fully calibrated through various soils at different soil moisture circumstances. Nine different chemical reagents with known dielectric constant were utilized to perform calibration of the …

Evaluation Of The Use Of Anchorage Systems For Strengthening Concrete Members Reinforced By Fiber-Reinforced-Polymer (Frp) Laminate, Mai Abd Alrhman Alrhman Aljaberi

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

An anchorage system is the most effective method for preventing or delaying the debonding of fiber-reinforced polymer laminates; however, despite extensive studies, the related design information is still unclear and limits its use. The goal of this research, therefore, is to investigate the parameters that affect the debonding strain of CFRP beams secured with different types of anchors. For this purpose, 34 small-scale beams were tested under four-point loading. Two (2) of them were control beams (no FRP, no anchors), 8 were strengthened with FRP at their tension sides, and the remaining 24 were secured with different types of anchor …

Improving Flood Forecasting Using Conditional Bias-Aware Assimilation Of Streamflow Observations And Dynamic Assessment Of Flow-Dependent Information Content, Haojing Shen Dec 2020

Improving Flood Forecasting Using Conditional Bias-Aware Assimilation Of Streamflow Observations And Dynamic Assessment Of Flow-Dependent Information Content, Haojing Shen

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Accurate forecasting of floods is a long-standing challenge in hydrology and water management. Data assimilation (DA) is a popular technique used to improve forecast accuracy by updating the model states in real time using the uncertainty-quantified actual and model-simulated observations. A particular challenge in DA concerns the ability to improve the prediction of hydrologic extremes, such as floods, which have particularly large impacts on society. Almost all DA methods used today are based on least squares minimization. As such, they are subject to conditional bias (CB) in the presence of observational uncertainties which often leads to under- and over-prediction of …

We investigate the influence of near-surface wind conditions on subsurface gas transport and on soil-atmosphere gas exchange for gases of different density. Results of a sand tank experiment are supported by a numerical investigation with a fully coupled porous medium-free flow model, which accounts for wind turbulence. The experiment consists of a two-dimensional bench-scale soil tank containing homogeneous sand and an overlying wind tunnel. A point source was installed at the bottom of the tank. Gas concentrations were measured at multiple horizontal and vertical locations. Tested conditions include four wind velocities (0.2/1.0/2.0/2.7 m/s), three different gases (helium: light, nitrogen: neutral, …

Quantifying Shallow Depth Concrete Delaminations Using Impact Echo, Mantaka Mahjabin Momo Aug 2020

Quantifying Shallow Depth Concrete Delaminations Using Impact Echo, Mantaka Mahjabin Momo

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Delamination is a type of deterioration commonly found in concrete structures. It may form due to corrosion of embedded steel, poor construction, excessive vibration, or lack of bonding in composite construction. Impact echo (IE) is a simple and straightforward non-destructive testing (NDT) technique that is used to detect the presence and extent of delamination within concrete structures. It is capable of detecting its presence of delaminations in deep depths, but cannot accurately measure the defects that are near the surface. This phenomenon occurs due to the differences in the vibration modes of deep and shallow depth delaminations. The objective of …

Sorption-Mediated Chemical Processes For The Versatile Treatment Of Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (Pfas) In Complex Media, Naomi Gevaerd De Souza

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

In recent years, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have gained notoriety due to environmental and health concerns. These molecules are chemically stable which contributes to their persistence in biological systems and their increased detections in surface waters. Treatment of highly persistent PFAS has been a challenging but significant task. The most practical technique for removal of PFAS is through adsorption onto granular activated carbon (GAC) or other novel materials. Meanwhile, PFAS are resistant to simple oxidation, and although decomposition of specific PFAS has been reported through advanced oxidation technologies, often energy-intense technologies capable of generating electrons such as ultraviolet radiation, …

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Many studies have investigated the use of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) wraps to strengthen structural members, but there is limited literature on the application of presaturated CFRP wraps on reinforced concrete members. The main objective of this research is to study the long-term effectiveness of presaturated CFRP wraps in preventing corrosion of reinforced concrete specimens in severe environments. This paper presents numerical and experimental studies that were conducted to determine whether CFRP presaturated wraps provide a barrier against the ingress of chloride and permeability of water into concrete and thereby decelerate the corrosion process. The results show that the …

An Experimental Study Of Coupled Thermo-Hydro Behavior In Unsaturated Soil, Nice Kaneza Aug 2020

An Experimental Study Of Coupled Thermo-Hydro Behavior In Unsaturated Soil, Nice Kaneza

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Understanding unsaturated soils in response to the impact of temperature will better predict the performance of geo-structures that extract and inject underground heat. Previous studies have shown that heat and water in unsaturated soil affect the movement of each other and that thermal gradients are responsible for the migration of water and thermal properties. Therefore, it is essential to study the coupling behavior of thermal and hydraulic (TH) processes to analyze the distribution of moisture and thermal properties of unsaturated soil. These processes are transient and difficult to examine in the field. In addition, there is a lack of laboratory …

Transient Seepage And Slope Stability Analysis In Partially Saturated Earthen Dam, Puneet Bhaskar Aug 2020

Transient Seepage And Slope Stability Analysis In Partially Saturated Earthen Dam, Puneet Bhaskar

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The problem of slope stability in earthen dams is a major concern to geotechnical engineers. Traditionally, the seepage through embankments and other geotechnical structures is estimated using hydraulic properties of saturated soil. In most of the cases, the soil is not fully saturated and use of saturated soil properties can lead to erroneous results. The reliable assessment of slope stability needs comprehensive characterization of both unsaturated and saturated hydraulic properties of soil. The coefficient of permeability is a key hydraulic property in solving any flow related problem in geotechnical engineering. The permeability coefficient of unsaturated soil is usually estimated using …

The Effect Of The Top Soil Layer On Moisture And Evaporation Dynamics, Zhen Li, Jan Vanderborght, Kathleen M. Smits

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Understanding the effect of the top soil layer on surface evaporation and water distribution is critical to modeling hydrological systems. However, the dependency of near-surface soil moisture and fluxes on layering characteristics remains unclear. To address this uncertainty, we investigate how the arrangement of soil horizons affects the evaporation and soil moisture, specifically, the near-surface soil moisture, through the combination of numerical simulations and evaporation experiments. The characteristics of fluxes and moisture from different soil profiles are then used to understand the soil layering conditions. Results show that the top soil layer can significantly affect the evolution of soil moisture …

Corrugated metal pipes (CMPs) are one of the widely used culvert structures in the American highway system. Compared to other types of culverts, CMPs have shorter design life, and many CMP culverts have reached or exceeded their design life. Therefore, renewal or replacement of those CMPs is needed to ensure the safety and service of the highways. Since replacements of these culverts are costly, renewalis less costly and has been on the focus in this decade. Different rehabilitation methods have been proposed by different DOTs and the researchers from open-cut methods to trenchless technology. Since open-cut methods disturb the operation …
