Performance Monitoring Of Cover-Zone Concrete, Niall Holmes, John Mccarter, Malcolm Chrisp, Gerry Starrs, Sreejith Nanukuttan, Lulu Basheer, Niall Holmes, Muhammed Basheer
Conference papers
The concrete cover-zone is a major factor governing the degradation of concrete structures as it provides the only barrier to aggressive agents which initiate corrosion of the reinforcement. Knowledge of the protective qualities of cover-zone concrete is critical in attempting to make predictions as to the in-service performance of the structure with regard to likely deterioration rates for a particular exposure condition and compliance with specified design life. To this end, a multi-electrode array was used to study the surface 50mm of concrete specimens thereby allowing a detailed picture of the response of the covercrete to the changing environment. In …

Conductivity Sensors To Monitor Cover-Zone Performance, W. J. Mccarter, T. M. Chrisp, G. Starrs, E. Owens, Niall Holmes, L. Basheer, S. V. Nanukuttan, M. Basheer
Conference papers
This paper presents developments in the use of an embedded, multi-electrode conductivity sensor to study the response of the concrete cover-zone to environmental action. The sensor enables an evaluation of the temporal and spatial variation of electrical conductivity thereby allowing an integrated assessment of the cover-zone. Conductivity sensors were embedded within concrete samples to study the cover-zone response to cyclic wetting and drying under laboratory conditions. This work was extended to include the use of remote interrogation methods to study samples placed at a marine exposure site and preliminary results are presented.
Combined Heat And Power In The Irish Market, Barry Cullen, Jim Mcgovern
Combined Heat And Power In The Irish Market, Barry Cullen, Jim Mcgovern
Other resources
Combined Heat and Power (CHP) production offers significant benefits in terms of energy efficiency and CO2 abatement and is generally considered to be a key technology in the move towards sustainable energy in Ireland. As a distributed generation technology it immediately benefits from reduced transmission and distribution losses, and as a combined generator its total plant efficiency indicates a significant decrease in fuel costs and a reduction in harmful emissions. The corresponding positive effect on energy security through reduced consumption is notable also. It therefore holds a significant place in the country’s future energy strategy. The present work offers a …

It is widely recognised that durability of concrete depends on its transport properties, viz. absorption, diffusion and permeability. As concrete cover provides the first line of defence against the ingress of many deleterious substances into the concrete, a measure of its transport properties is vital in assessing its long term performance in the given exposure condition. In new structures the rate of ingress of the deleterious substances could be monitored using array of electrical sensors which are embedded in the cover concrete. For structures which are currently in service, two in situ permeability apparatuses, viz. Autoclam Permeability System (for measuring …
Embodied Energy Analysis: A Sustainable Construction Design Assessment Tool, Adolf Acquaye, Aidan Duffy, Biswajit Basu
Embodied Energy Analysis: A Sustainable Construction Design Assessment Tool, Adolf Acquaye, Aidan Duffy, Biswajit Basu
Conference Papers
Embodied energy analysis can be used as a construction design assessment tool in a sustainable matrix for a building. Its implementation however remains challenging mainly because of data measurement errors. A comparison between the deterministic embodied energy (EE) of a building and the stochastic EE of the same building undertaken using Monte Carlo simulation showed a wide variation in results. It is recommended that the specification of EE intensity of building materials in the construction industry can assist in producing accurate and more credible EE values of building.
Heat Transfer Correlations For Low Approach Evaporative Cooling Systems In Buildings, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn
Heat Transfer Correlations For Low Approach Evaporative Cooling Systems In Buildings, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn
Articles
The experimental performance of an open industrial scale cooling tower, utilising small approach temperature differences (1–3 K), for rejection of heat at the low water temperatures (11–20 °C) typical of chilled ceilings and other sensible air–water heat dissipation systems in buildings, is examined. The study was carried out under temperate maritime climatic conditions (3–18 °C wet-bulb temperature range). Initially a theoretical analysis of the process at typical conditions for this climate was conducted, which indicated that a water to air (L/G) mass flow rate ratio of less than 1.0 was required for effective operation. Consequently for these low L/G ratios, …

The Future Scenario Of Creating A Digital Sme Community In The Irish Construction Industry, Alan V. Hore, Roger West, Alan Redmond
The Future Scenario Of Creating A Digital Sme Community In The Irish Construction Industry, Alan V. Hore, Roger West, Alan Redmond
Conference papers
The problems associated with the Construction Industry not being able to manage and com-municate electronically product and project data between collaborating firms and within individual companies is compounded by the large number of small companies that have not adopted advanced Information Com-munication Technology (ICT). The typical nature of the service provided in construction, being an on-site and often highly customised service are generally identified as the reason for the low ICT uptake. The majority of Irish companies in the construction sector are Small to Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs). As eBusiness opens up the Irish economy to international competition Irish SMEs …

A Flexible Web Based Learning Tool For Construction And Surveying Students Using Building Information Modelling And Laser Scanning, Maurice Murphy, Garrett Keenaghan, Eugene Mcgovern, Sara Pavia
Conference papers
Teaching and training construction and surveying students using computer simulations of buildings although recently developed is not new. In the case of this project a novel aspect is introduced through applying advanced recording and building modelling techniques developed in the Faculty of the Built Environment in the Technological University of Dublin. In summary this learning software uses parametric objects representing intelligent building components which are brought together virtually by the student to create or form an entire building. The library of parametric objects contain the real world geometry, texture and specification of building parts allowing the student to virtually analyse …
Marine Current Energy Status And Its Potential In Ireland, Fergal O'Rourke, Fergal Boyle, Anthony Reynolds
Marine Current Energy Status And Its Potential In Ireland, Fergal O'Rourke, Fergal Boyle, Anthony Reynolds
Other resources
The energy consumption in Ireland is primarily achieved by the combustion of fossil fuels. As well as fossil fuels continually becoming more expensive and fluctuating in price, their use as an energy source also has a negative impact on the environment. Ireland’s energy consumption can be separated into three separate divisions: transportation, electricity generation and heat energy. The use of marine current energy technologies will assist in sustainable development as well as being a solution to several energy related environmental problems. Energy extraction using this technology offers a vast and predictable energy source. However, marine current energy technology is still …
Land Use Planning In Ireland: A Life Cycle Energy Analysis Of Recent Residential Development In The Greater Dublin Area, Aidan Duffy
Articles
Background, aim, and scope: One third of the total housing stock in the Republic of Ireland has been built in 10 years up to and including 2006 and of this approximately 34% was built in the Greater Dublin Area (GDA). Much of the housing was low-density with poor public transport links leading to doubts over its sustainability—particularly in terms of energy use. Although the country is committed to reducing greenhouse gases to 13% above 1990 levels by the period 2008–2012, by 2005, emissions were already 25.4% higher than the aseline and current projections are that this figure will rise to …

Highway Bridge Assessment For Dynamic Interaction With Critical Vehicles, Daniel Cantero, Eugene J. Obrien, Arturo González, Bernard Enright, Cillian Rowley
Conference papers
Dynamic vehicle-bridge interaction is often considered for the most common classes of vehicle such as the 5-axle articulated truck. However, the dynamic response of bridges to this type of trucks is quite different to the response to the vehicles more likely to feature in maximum-in-lifetime traffic loading events. This paper focuses on large (>100 tonne) cranes and crane-type vehicles that have been recorded at Weigh-in-Motion sites in Europe. This paper analyses the total bending moment due to these vehicles on short to medium span bridges and compare them to 5- axle articulated trucks. To account for the variability in …

Incorporating Spatial Data And Gis To Improve Sea Of Land Use Plans: Opportunities And Limitations: Case Studies In The Republic Of Ireland, Ainhoa Gonzalez Del Campo
Doctoral
This research aimed at establishing whether spatial data and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can contribute to Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA). To achieve this, an integrated GISEA approach was developed and applied to a number of spatial planning SEAs in the Republic of Ireland. The practical applicability of the approach was examined, evaluating the potential benefits derived from using spatial data and GIS in SEA and assessing the potential barriers to an effective GIS use. The implementation of the SEA Directive incorporated a new dimension into plan-making by calling for the assessment of potential environmental effects that may derive from implementing …

Barriers To Innovation In Public-Private Partnership (Ppp), Louis Gunnigan, David Eaton
Conference papers
This paper sets out to identify barriers to greater use of innovation in PPP projects. Using a series of in-depth interviews with participants on two closely related PPP projects, data were gathered and analysed to compare the success of the projects in relation to innovation. The views of the participants relating to the approach to innovation were recorded and were examined relative to the views on innovation expressed in published documentation relating to these projects. The research showed that two different types of innovation could be identified – namely cost reducing innovation and product enhancing innovation. It also showed that, …

Rampart Roads In The Peat Lands Of Ireland: Genesis, Development And Current Performance, Juan Pablo Osorio, Eric R. Farrell, Brendan C. O'Kelly, Tom Casey
Articles
The construction and improvement of roads on peat lands has always been a challenging task in geotechnical engineering. Rampart roads, which are a particular feature of the bog roads in Ireland, are caused by the excavation of peat from the roadsides over many years for use as a domestic fuel. The historical development of rampart roads and current performance under the added traffic loading is discussed. Various road improvement methods have been applied to improve the road ability to carry traffic and the technical aspects and performance of the methods are discussed. In particular, the performance of the improvement methods …
