The Complexities Of Green Infrastructure, Troy Weber
The Complexities Of Green Infrastructure, Troy Weber
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
The Wabash River is the most extensive river system in Indiana. The river drains two-thirds of Indiana’s 92 counties, which can have issues associated with stormwater runoff (Weist, 1981). As precipitation runs off impervious surfaces, it can carry high concentrations of pollutants, such as excess nitrogen and phosphorus, pet waste, and automobile fuel. Prior to impervious runoff entering the river, preexisting contaminants include industrial waste (acid mine drainage and oil field brines), municipal waste, and sediment (Weist, 1981). Thus, stormwater runoff can negatively impact the Wabash River watershed. On top of this pollution, Lafayette and West Lafayette have combined sewer …
Service-Learning In Action: Lafayette, Indiana, Rain Garden Installation, Elizabeth Mccleery
Service-Learning In Action: Lafayette, Indiana, Rain Garden Installation, Elizabeth Mccleery
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
Indiana’s Wabash River is being polluted with contaminated water runoff from precipitation events. A lack of pervious land cover has led to an accumulation of fertilizer, sediment, and waste in the river. Green infrastructure, a stormwater management practice that mimics the natural ecosystem, is one of the most effective ways to prevent pollution from stormwater runoff and benefit the community. This project consisted of a rain garden installation at the Lafayette Fueling Station, a site where frequent water drainage and water runoff into the Wabash occurs. The rain garden will allow on-site water infiltration during rain events and promote natural …
The Effects Of Engineering Summer Camps On Middle And High School Students’ Engineering Interest And Identity Formation: A Multi-Methods Study, Timothy Robinson, Adam Kirn, Jenny Amos, Indira Chatterjee
The Effects Of Engineering Summer Camps On Middle And High School Students’ Engineering Interest And Identity Formation: A Multi-Methods Study, Timothy Robinson, Adam Kirn, Jenny Amos, Indira Chatterjee
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
This multi-methods study explores changes in engineering interest and identity of middle and high school students (n = 79) attending introductory-level engineering summer camps at a large western land grant university. Middle school is a critical time when student interest, identity, and subsequently career choice begin to emerge and hence it is important that at this age students are given accurate information about engineering majors in college and future career opportunities in engineering. Data were collected over a period of two years in six summer camps. Three separate populations of middle and high school students participated in the summer …
Fine Tuning Mobilenet Neural Networks For Oil Spill Detection, Caixia Wang, Andrew Coulson
Fine Tuning Mobilenet Neural Networks For Oil Spill Detection, Caixia Wang, Andrew Coulson
I-GUIDE Forum
The monitoring of open water and early identification of oil spills in the Alaska Arctic has become increasingly critical due to the rise in oil and gas exploration and shipping activities, facilitated by the increasing number of ice-free days resulting from global warming. This escalating risk of oil spills is further compounded by potential accidents in offshore operations, illicit oil discharges, and knowledge gaps in Arctic coastlines, rapidly changing due to rising seas, permafrost melting, and coastal erosion. To address these pressing challenges, we propose a deep learning model based on MobileNet neural networks to detect oil spills in remotely …

I-Guide Climbers: A Model For Multidisciplinary Academic Labs For Early Career Development, Iman Haqiqi, Wei Hu, Ramya Kumaran, Pin-Ching Li, Nicholas Manning, Alex Michels, Ayman Nassar, Jinwoo Park, Jimeng Shi, Adam Tonks, Zhaonan Wang
I-GUIDE Forum
In this paper, we propose a new form of multidisciplinary academic collaboration that goes beyond the traditional modes of knowledge exchange. We argue that most research collaboration today is based on interactions between closely related disciplines, in which researchers share data, methods, and insights within a common framework or problem. However, such collaboration may not foster the development of the communication and management skills essential to a multi-disciplinary research career. Therefore, we suggest establishing a network of researchers from divergent, yet complementary, disciplines who are interested in improving these skills through regular interactions and feedback. The main goal of this …
An Object-Based Ground Filtering Of Airborne Lidar Data For Large-Area Dtm Generation, Hunsoo Song, Jinha Jung
An Object-Based Ground Filtering Of Airborne Lidar Data For Large-Area Dtm Generation, Hunsoo Song, Jinha Jung
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Digital terrain model (DTM) creation is a modeling process that represents the Earth’s surface. An aptly designed DTM generation method tailored for intended study can significantly streamline ensuing processes and assist in managing errors and uncertainties, particularly in large-area projects. However, existing methods often exhibit inconsistent and inexplicable results, struggle to clearly define what an object is, and often fail to filter large objects due to their locally confined operations. We introduce a new DTM generation method that performs object-based ground filtering, which is particularly beneficial for urban topography. This method defines objects as areas fully enclosed by steep slopes …

The Intersection Of Utility Coordination And Sue, Natalie Parks, Ken Kerr
Purdue Road School
ASCE recently released two new SUE standards—ASCE 38-22 is the updated SUE standard commonly used during the utility coordination process during design, and ASCE 75-22 is the new utility as-built standard that is essential for the accurate location of newly relocated facilities in construction. This presentation will illustrate the interaction and relationship between SUE and utility coordination to enhance project deliverables and reduce risk during construction.

Design, Collaborate, Thrive: The Broad Ripple Avenue Project, Jessica Hawley, Emily Nelson, Ericka Miller
Purdue Road School
Broad Ripple Avenue (College Avenue to Winthrop Avenue) needed large-scale stormwater improvements. With the help of the Lochmueller Group and the Broad Ripple Village Association, Indianapolis DPW perceptively took this opportunity to also improve pedestrian facilities and regional multi-modal connectivity by combining multiple regional projects into one construction contract. This consolidation allowed for a cohesive public message through proactive public involvement. Presenters will share how consensus was built between invested parties through a successful public and private partnership.

Indiana’S New Strategic Highway Safety Plan, Michael A. Holowaty
Purdue Road School
Over the past 2 years, Indiana has been part of a nationwide surge in the number of motor vehicle fatalities and serious injuries. Even before that time, traffic deaths remained stubbornly high in comparison to other industrial peer nations. In 2022, INDOT engaged with stakeholders and partners inside and outside of state government to create a new Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP). The new SHSP is aligned with the FHWA Safe Systems Approach and will help facilitate the changes brought by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Legislation (BIL Act) to state and local safety programs. This presentation will introduce the structure of …

Purdue Road School
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) responded to one its worst transportation challenges ever when historic flooding struck Appalachia and Eastern Kentucky counties in 2022. The transportation agency responded immediately to the disaster, and in the months following the event, KYTC was charged with assessing bridges for safety, clearing roads and streams, and restoring access to allow responders to reach those in need. New programs were quickly developed to address needs ranging from the installation of temporary bridges to the creation of temporary shelters for displaced residents. During this, C2 Strategic Communications partnered with KYTC to develop a communications campaign to …
