"In some of the pine regions of the Ozark Mountains, a considerable portion of the country is rolling and rough, comprising a succession of hills and hollows. The most efficient method of logging such a tract is obtained by locating the logging road so as to secure a down grade haul for the logs, with consequent up grade return for the empty cars. The District is fifteen miles long and from one to five miles wide. The watershed has approximately five times the area of the swamp, and in early days, as much as one-half the thirty two thousand acres was under water for practically the entire year.
