Innovative Approach To Repair Corroded Steel Piles Using Ultra-High Performance Concrete, Binod Shrestha, Ahmed Gheni, Mohanad M. Abdulazeez, Mohamed Elgawady
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Steel H-piles are a common structural system in existing bridges. Many steel H-piles have been corroded as a result of severe weather and acid/alkaline salt exposures, causing a reduction in the axial load capacity. This paper experimentally investigates the use of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) encasement as a novel repair method for corroded steel H-pile. UHPC displays better tensile strength, early compressive strength, workability, and durability compared with conventional concrete. The proposed repair is used to bridge the corroded section in H-pile using either a cast-in-place or precast UHPC elements. A series of push-out tests was conducted on eight full-scale …
Bond Behavior Between Steel Fiber Reinforced Polymer (Srp) And Concrete, Xingxing Zou, Lesley Sneed
Bond Behavior Between Steel Fiber Reinforced Polymer (Srp) And Concrete, Xingxing Zou, Lesley Sneed
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Steel fiber reinforced polymer (SRP) composite materials, which consist of continuous unidirectional steel wires (cords) embedded in a polymeric matrix, have recently emerged as an effective solution for strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. SRP is bonded to the surface of RC structures by the same matrix to provide external reinforcement. Interfacial debonding between the SRP and concrete is a primary concern in this type of application. This study aimed to investigate the bond characteristics between SRP and concrete determined by single-lap direct shear tests with different composite bonded lengths and fiber sheet densities (cord spacings). Specimens with medium density …
Shear Wave Velocity Anisotropy Of Salt- And Polymer-Amended Kaolinite, X. Kang, J. Cao, B. Bate
Shear Wave Velocity Anisotropy Of Salt- And Polymer-Amended Kaolinite, X. Kang, J. Cao, B. Bate
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Shear wave velocity (Vs) anisotropy of kaolinite mixed with sodium chloride (NaCl) and organic polymer (polyethylene oxide, xanthan gum, and chitosan) solutions was investigated using a custom-made floating wall consolidometer-type bender element testing system. The addition of salt and polymers influenced the microfabric anisoopy of platy kaolinite particles, thus resulted in the increment or decrement in the Vs anisotropy. The Vs of kaolinite in all three orthogonal directions increased as the NaCl concentration increased; however, the Vs anisotropy decreased. PEO and chitosan increased the Vs of kaolinite, while xanthan gum exhibited counter-effects. Vs anisotropy (Vs−hh/Vs−vh and Vs−hv/Vs−vh) of polymer amended …

Although building information modeling (BIM) is experiencing substantial development and use in the construction industry, its legal and business structures lag far behind. While many research efforts have been devoted to promoting the implementation of BIM in the construction industry, very few of them have actually attempted to explore its contractual environment. In fact, previous studies reported the lack of, and need for, a holistic understanding of BIM contractual requirements. To fill this gap, this paper assists the various project parties in better understanding BIM contractual integration and utilization in the construction industry at different key levels: contractual incorporation of …

Leading Change During The Convergence Of An Epidemic And A Pandemic, Sarah Oerther, Daniel B. Oerther
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
As the first wave of COVID-19 cases spread around the globe in early 2020, the healthcare community adopted a medical model that emphasized the use of resources to mitigate viral spread (Oerther & Watson, 2020). Schools, churches, and businesses shutdown, and healthcare facilities – from outpatient clinics to inpatient elective surgeries – were closed or cancelled. Even long-term care facilities, such as nursing homes, limited access of visitors to patients in an attempt at mitigation. And for six months, the healthcare community focused almost exclusively on a medical response to COVID-19, securing stockpiles of ventilators and fast-tracking vaccine development.

In order to evaluate the risk level of water inrush caused by karst cave accurately and effectively, a novel quantitative assessment model was established based on the reliability theory and genetic algorithm-back propagation (GA-BP) neural network. First, the reliability theory and the calculation formula of the minimum safe thickness were used to calculate the water inrush probability. Second, the GA-BP neural network was applied to predict the disaster consequence caused by water inrush. Six factors, including water pressure, hydraulic supply, type of gap, filling situation, degree of water enrichment and reserves of cave, were selected as the input layer of …

Detection Of Corrosion-Indicating Oxidation Product Colors In Steel Bridges Under Varying Illuminations, Shadows, And Wetting Conditions, Dayakar L. Naik, Hizb Ullah Sajid, Ravi Kiran, Genda Chen
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Early detection of corrosion in steel bridges is essential for strategizing the mitigation of further corrosion damage. Although various image-based approaches are available in the literature for corrosion detection, most of these approaches are tested on images acquired under uniform natural daylight illuminations i.e., inherent variations in the ambient lighting conditions are ignored. Owing to the fact that varying natural daylight illuminations, shadows, water wetting, and oil wetting are unavoidable in real-world scenarios, it is important to devise a robust technique for corrosion identification. In the current study, four different color spaces namely ‘RGB’, ‘rgb’, ‘HSV’ and ‘CIE La*b*’ along …

Modeling The Load Of Sars-Cov-2 Virus In Human Expelled Particles During Coughing And Speaking, Yang Wang, Guang Xu, Yue-Wern Huang
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Particle size is an essential factor when considering the fate and transport of virus-containing droplets expelled by human, because it determines the deposition pattern in the human respiratory system and the evolution of droplets by evaporation and gravitational settling. However, the evolution of virus-containing droplets and the size-dependent viral load have not been studied in detail. The lack of this information leads to uncertainties in understanding the airborne transmission of respiratory diseases, such as the COVID-19. In this study, through a set of differential equations describing the evolution of respiratory droplets and by using the SARS-CoV-2 virus as an example, …

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The project selection process is a crucial step in sustainable development. Effective sustainable development depends on the ability to select the appropriate sustainable project to implement to ensure that the desired goals are met. Some of the most common characteristics or criteria used in evaluating sustainable projects include novelty, uncertainty, skill and experience, technology information transfer, and project cost. Prioritizing these criteria based on relative importance helps project managers and decision makers identify elements that require additional attention, better allocate resources, as well as improve the selection process when evaluating different sustainable project alternatives. The aim of this research is …

Asphalt cement will not last for a long time as the world encounters a diminishment in the crude oil. For sustainable, flexible pavement development, new resources can provide a contribution to replace it partially or entirely. In this study, asphalt was partially and entirely replaced by guayule resin as a bioresource by-product, extracted during the guayule natural rubber production. Crumb rubber modifier (CRM) was used as an asphalt enhancer. The Superpave grading system was followed at high, intermediate, and low temperatures to evaluate such innovative binder for rutting, fatigue, and thermal cracking, respectively, in addition to viscosity. Therefore, the original, …

Resilience Of School Systems Following Severe Earthquakes, Emad M. Hassan, Hussam N. Mahmoud, Bruce R. Ellingwood
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Natural disasters may have catastrophic and long-lasting impacts on communities' physical, economic, and social infrastructure. Slow recovery of educational services following such events is likely to cause traumatic stress in children, lead families to out-migrate, and affect the community's overall social stability. Methods for quantifying and assessing the restoration process of educational systems and their dependencies on other supporting infrastructure have not received adequate attention. This study introduces, for the first time, a new framework to evaluate the functionality, recovery, and resilience of a school system following severe earthquake events. The framework considers both the quantity and quality of education …

Detailed information about temperature distribution can be important to understand structural behavior in fire. This study develops a method to image three-dimensional temperature distributions in steel–concrete composite slabs using distributed fiber optic sensors. The feasibility of the method is explored using six 1.2 m × 0.9 m steel–concrete composite slabs instrumented with distributed sensors and thermocouples subjected to fire for over 3 h. Dense point clouds of temperature in the slabs were measured using the distributed sensors. The results show that the distributed sensors operated at material temperatures up to 960◦C with acceptable accuracy for many structural fire applications. The …

Factors Affecting Brittleness Behavior Of Coal-Gangue Ceramsite Lightweight Aggregate Concrete, Yunsen Wang, Jingping Qiu, Wen Deng, Jun Xing, Jian Liang
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Coal gangue, which is the solid waste produced during the coal processing, causes serious environmental problems. Lightweight concrete by making use of the coal-gangue ceramsite as the aggregate has many advantages as the construction material. However, the high brittleness of lightweight aggregate concrete is one of the problems for its application in building infrastructure. In this paper, the variation regularity, influencing factors and reinforcing/toughening method were studied as the reference data for future practical applications of coal-gangue ceramsite lightweight aggregate concrete (CGCLWAC). The results show that the brittleness of CGCLWAC increases with age, but the rate of the increase of …

Heterogenous Trip Distance-Based Route Choice Behavior Analysis Using Real-World Large-Scale Taxi Trajectory Data, Yajuan Deng, Meiye Li, Qing Tang, Renjie He, Xianbiao Hu
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Most early research on route choice behavior analysis relied on the data collected from the stated preference survey or through small-scale experiments. This manuscript focused on the understanding of commuters' route choice behavior based on the massive amount of trajectory data collected from occupied taxicabs. The underlying assumption was that travel behavior of occupied taxi drivers can be considered as no different than the well-experienced commuters. To this end, the DBSCAN algorithm and Akaike information criterion (AIC) were first used to classify trips into different categories based on the trip length. Next, a total of 9 explanatory variables were defined …

Component Analysis Of Bio-Asphalt Binder Using Crumb Rubber Modifier And Guayule Resin As An Innovative Asphalt Replacer, Ahmed Hemida, Magdy Abdelrahman
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This research seeks to interpret the component analysis of an innovative bio-asphalt binder using guayule resin in addition to crumb rubber modifier (CRM) at high concentrations. Such asphalt modification aims to minimize the dependency on virgin asphalt binder and provide new solutions concerning sustainable, flexible pavement industry. Guayule resin is a promising bioresource for asphalt binder replacement. By now, it could be considered a no value byproduct extracted during the guayule natural rubber production. CRM is a recycled material derived from scrap tires. The provided interpretation could help in understanding the asphalt-rubber-guayule interaction mechanism. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), supported …

Bridge Infrastructure Asset Management System: Comparative Computational Machine Learning Approach For Evaluating And Predicting Deck Deterioration Conditions, Rayan Assaad, Islam H. El-Adaway
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Bridge infrastructure asset management system is a prevailing approach toward having an effective and efficient procedure for monitoring bridges through their different development phases including construction, operation, and maintenance. Damage to any structural component of a bridge will negatively affect its safety, integrity, and longevity. Bridge decks are more susceptible to severe deterioration because they are exposed to harsh conditions including heavy traffic, varying temperatures, road salts, and abrasive forces. The ability to forecast the conditions of bridges in an accurate way has been a great challenge to transportation agencies. Many previous research studies highlighted the need to have a …

How Does Three-Dimensional Canopy Geometry Affect The Front Propagation Of A Gravity Current?, Jian Zhou, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Large-eddy simulations are performed to investigate how three-dimensional canopy geometry affects the front propagation of an incoming gravity current under a given initial forcing. A regular array of rigid square cylinders are used to represent the distributed canopy elements. It is shown that the conventional geometrical parameter of submerged canopies in constant-density flows (ah, where a is the frontal area per canopy volume and h is the canopy height) is misleading when applied to buoyancy-driven flows due to the additional complexity arising from the internal density gradients. Instead, the present study suggests a new geometrical framework consisting of a canopy …

Co2 Curing Efficiency For Cement Paste And Mortars Produced By A Low Water-To-Cement Ratio, Seong Ho Han, Yubin Jun, Tae Yong Shin, Jae Hong Kim
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Curing by CO2 is a way to utilize CO2 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Placing early-age cement paste in a CO2 chamber or pressure vessel accelerates its strength development. Cement carbonation is attributed to the quickened strength development, and CO2 uptake can be quantitatively evaluated by measuring CO2 gas pressure loss in the pressure vessel. A decrease in CO2 gas pressure is observed with all cement pastes and mortar samples regardless of the mix proportion and the casting method; one method involves compacting a low water-to-cement ratio mix, and the other method comprises a …
Influence Of Aggregates In Concrete On Fiber-Optic Based Thermal Integrity Profiling Analysis Of Concrete Structures, Ruoyu Zhong, Wen Deng
Influence Of Aggregates In Concrete On Fiber-Optic Based Thermal Integrity Profiling Analysis Of Concrete Structures, Ruoyu Zhong, Wen Deng
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Fiber-optic sensor has drawn wide attention in the non-destructive testing and evaluation of civil engineering materials due to its high accuracy and resolution as well as cost-efficiency. Currently, using optical fiber as the temperature sensor is proposed to conduct the thermal integrity profiling (TIP) of concrete structures. However, concrete is not a thermally homogeneous material as assumed in current studies of concrete TIP. Its essential components, such as aggregates may cause thermal inhomogeneity problems when implementing fiber-optic sensors for TIP. In this paper, we use the concrete structures with different grades of aggregates to conduct numerical simulation for non-destructive thermal …

Resonance Of Droplets In Constricted Capillary Tubes: Critical Factors And Nonlinearity, Chao Zeng, Wen Deng, M. Bayani Cardenas
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Resonance of droplets in constricted capillary tubes responding to external vibratory excitation can be theoretically characterized by the abstract coefficients such as resonant frequency and rate of damping. A physically sound model, however, is needed to relate these abstract coefficients to the fluid properties of two-phase fluid, geometric properties of tube, and features of excited waves. A hydrodynamic model, based on the moving-boundary control volume concept and the transient oscillatory velocity profile, was developed to characterize the resonance of droplets. This model was validated against computational fluid dynamics simulation results expressed in both time and frequency domains. Dominant factors including …
